It startedwith a dream

A,
BYLANEHARTWELL
Ten years ater Wikipedias launch, theoriginal vision captured in our missionstatement continues to inspire those o usworking at the Wikimedia Foundation.
Our great accomplishment o 2010 was
the nalization o a strategic plan or the
Wikimedia movement. It was an extraordinary
eortover a thousand volunteers worked
collaboratively to develop the priorities that
will help chart our course through 2015.
The plan ocuses on ve areas: stabilize our
organizational and technical inrastructure,
increase participation in our projects, improve
the quality o the inormation in our projects,
increase the global reach o our projects,
and encourage innovation to better enable
collaborative inormation sharing in the uture.
Meanwhile, by practically every measure,
Wikimedias projects are fourishing. Readership continues to increasewe
are now serving more than 400 million people every month. The total numbero articles, and the quality o those articles, continues to increase. In addition,
more people are donating to Wikimedia than ever beore. Our material continues
to nd new venuesits now visible in maps and social networks; its available
on mobile phones, tablets and e-readers; and its copied by countless other sites
or many dierent purposes.
Thats all good news.
But our challenges are also clear. Not enough
new editors are joining our ranks, which putsa heavy workload on veteran editors. Our
core community is men in their mid-twenties,
mainly in Europe and North America, so now
we are aggressively recruiting others to join
our work, particularly women and people in
the Global South. In the upcoming year, our
particular emphasis will be on India, Brazil,
the Middle East and North Arica.

We also need to adapt our
technology to better serve the
millions o people who access our projects on all types o devices
and platorms, including smartphones, low-end eature phones, tablets, as well as in ofine settings.
We could never hope to meet these and other challenges
without your support. In 2010, people like you made more than
177 million edits, and donated more than $9 million dollars.
Thank you or all o the work and generosity.
We also thank those who served the movement or the past year
as Trustees. Michael Snow served as Chair o the Board o Trustees
rom early 2008 until the summer o 2010. Michael, a long-time
Wikipedian, continues to be a source o inspiration and wisdom or
our community. We thank him or his leadership and support. We welcomed new aces to our Board o Trustees. Matt Halprin,
Arne Klempert, Bishakha Datta, Samuel Klein, and Phoebe Ayers
joined in the past year. And we welcomed Craig Newmark, Jing
Wang, Mimi Ito, and Nhlanhla Mabaso to our Advisory Board. Our
thanks to you all.

Just ten years ago, however,
this wildly improbable idea
was just that an idea thatalmost no one thought would
ever become a reality. Well,
it did, and now more than
400 million people turn
to Wikipedia every month.
Welcome to our world,
where the wildly improbable
can and does come true.
Somewhere on the planet, three timesevery second, a volunteer makes a new editin one o 270 languages to the largest reeencyclopedia the world has ever seen.

Stabilize infrastructureWe operate the th most popular web
property world-wide, and we need toensure our operating inrastructure
matches our global impact. We will
continue to expand our community o
hundreds o thousands o donors, work
to saeguard our business operations
globally, and build a permanent data
center to reduce downtime and mitigate
risks o catastrophic ailure.
Increase reachToday, Wikimedias sites reach roughly
a third o all Internet users around theworld. The majority o humanity is now
coming online using mobile phones. We
need to improve our platorm to serve
audiences on all devices well. We will
also optimize site perormance globally,
and explore solutions to disseminate
content to people with no or intermittent
connectivity.
Improve qualityWikipedia has succeeded largely because
o the breadth and depth o its content. But
many gaps remain, and the quality o entries
is inconsistent. Our rst priority is to ensure
that we give readers better inormation
about article quality, by developing better
assessment and labeling tools. We will also
help increase the movements capacity to
develop new and lasting partnerships with
cultural and educational institutions.
Encourage innovationThe wiki was invented in 1995. At that
time, using it collaboratively to create
an encyclopedia was a social innovation.
Through our history, our community has
been the source o most o our technical
and social innovation, and this is where
the next big idea will come rom.
We will create an environment that o ers
volunteers social space and technical
resources to innovate, experiment
and learn.
How do we get there?
Increase participationWikipedias boom years o
participation are behind us. Now we
ace the challenge presented by a slowly
decreasing number o editors. To gain
new editors, we must adapt our editing
technology to the changing web, improve
the social experience or new users, and
grow participation in the Global South by
catalyzing on-the-ground work by
the community.
During the past two years, the Foundation developed itsrst-ever strategic plan. More than 1,000 volunteers romall over the world collaborated in a transparent processthat resulted in priorities to guide us through 2015.

Over the past year, the British Museum
and the Wikipedia community have been
working cooperatively to develop high-quality articles about many ascinating
artiacts in the museums collections. One
example is the Hoxne Hoard.
The story goes t hat one day outside
the English village o Hoxne, in Suolk,
a armer named Peter Whatling lost a
hammer in his eld, so he asked Eric
Lawes, an amateur metal detectorist, to
help him look or it. L awes brought over
his metal detector and proceeded to nd
not only the hammer but a large number
o ancient silver spoons, gold jewelry, and gold and silver coins.
The ollowing day, a team o archeologists arrived at the
eld, and dated the cache to the late Roman Empire period, in
the ourth and th century A.D. They surmised that the items
had originally been buried in a oak box or chest, perhaps by a
wealthy amily during the chaos o the empires collapse.
Many o the 14,865 coins and some 200 items o silver
tableware and gold jewelry are now on display at the British
Museum, where
they have come to
be known as the
Hoxne Hoard.
Some o the
most experienced
and talented
Wikipedians, plus
experts rom the
British Museum, collaborated to produce an incredibly detailed Hoxne Hoard
entry, which includes over 120 citations, and dozens o high
quality maps, diagrams, and photographs.
The ongoing collaboration between the museum, which has
or over 250 years provided ree entry to all, and the worlds
largest encyclopedia, which is also ree t o all, illustrates how
ascinating but obscure inormation o this sort can be given
new lie and brought t o a global audience.
Partnering with institutions
Inside theHoxne HoardarticleTogether
Wikipedians noted the Hoard included this
22-carat gold bracelet eaturing the Latin
inscription UTERE FELIX DOMINA IVLIANE,
meaning Use [this] happily, Lady Juliane.
Wikipedians collaborated with experts atthe British Museum to produce a richlydetailed article about the Hoxne Hoard. This is an outstanding example o how wework with cultural institutions around theworld to improve the quality o the articlesin Wikipedia.
Maps: User-createdmaps bring importantgeographic contextto the breadth o theHoards story.

The Hoxne Hoard article has been designateda eatured article, which means it is o thehighest quality. Currently, only one tenth o onepercent o Wikipedias content has achievedthis status.

A year o stories and innovations
Case studies
The Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam has numerousexhibits, objects and images rom the ormerDutch colonies o Indonesia and Surinam.
Foundations, we launched our usability initiative, a large-
scale collaborative eort based on studies with everyday
readers who had no prior editing experience.
By listening to them, we have been able to implement
a number o changes that improve Wikipedias look and
eel, including improvements to the navigation and search
unctionality, and a signicantly simplied editing screen
with built-in help and assistants or common tasks. We used
the opportunity o a design reresh to implement an upgrade
to the ubiquitous Wikipedia puzzle globe, which is now
rendered as a ully three dimensional icon.
Late in 2010, with the support o the Ford Foundation,
we launched a new upload wizard in beta to acilitate the
contribution o multimedia entries to Wikimedia Commons,
which now contains almost ten million images, videos, and
audio works that enhance all o our ree knowledge projects
(data rom March 2011).
Among our top priorities this past year wasmaking Wikipedia easier or newcomers to edit. Thanks to grants rom the Stanton and Ford
using a single DSLR camera to take thousands o photos
o municipalities, castles, nature reserves, rivers, and
other landmarks. With additional help rom the Foundation
to support tr avel, Czech volunteers have undertaken aremarkable collaborative eort to document the countrys
social, political, and cultural history. This is one o many small
grants we awarded to support program work globally.
A small grant o $1,500 rom the Foundation tothe regional Wikimedia Czech Republic chapterlast year triggered an amazing eort by people

Tropenmuseum: reclaiming history
Usability initiative: editing made easier
As part o an unprecedented
collaboration with the Dutch Wikimedia
chapter, the museum is donating a
portion o this historical material to
Wikimedia Commons.
Wikimedians are organizing and
cataloging the images, and also
improving their quality. Longtime
Wikimedian Durova has been under-
taking the meticulous job o retouching
photos, removing scratches, andrestoring the images to the highest
quality possible.
The Indonesian Wikimedia chapter
plans to translate the annotations
on cultural artiacts and images into
local languages. This will allow the
Indonesian public to participate in
reclaiming a part o its past that until
now has only been accessible hal a
world away in Amsterdam.
Observational research
was conducted with
users as they made
their rst-ever edits to
Wikipedia.
Over 2,100 rare images rom
the Tropenmuseums collection
have already been added to
Wikimedias projects.

the culture, history, and geography o these regions. Over the

States in India, where there is tremendous enthusiasm to help
us set an example that can be copied elsewhere. Our goal is
to catalyze community and outreach programs and to support

audience that has grown to more than 45 million people a day.
I this data center should be aected by a major disaster,

In 201011, thereore, we are building up additional
hosting inrastructure in a new primary data center, based
in the state o Virginia. This acility will provide top-tier
connectivity, and enhanced stability should disaster strike in
the uture. For now, we are maintaining our Tampa acility asa backup data center.
The additional capacity in Virginia will also provide the
