Beethoven’s seventh symphony was one of the composer’s most popular works from its first performance. The four movements have a joyous energy which generates enormous power. Schubert’s last symphony is possibly his greatest masterpiece in any form, a supremely lyrical and imaginative work. “The appearances of Semyon Bychkov have become red letter events, and this... was no exception” Sunday Telegraph

Stabat Mater
New London Sinfonia David Gibson conductorBasingstoke Choral Society with Croydon Philharmonic Choir
Rossini completed his opera William Tell in 1829, making it his 36th in nineteen years. The overture has become his best-known work due to an indelible association with The Lone Ranger TV series.
His Stabat Mater was first performed in Paris in 1842 to great acclaim. Three of the movements had to be repeated to quieten the cheers from the audience. The solemn text, a devotional poem about the Virgin Mary, could not be in greater contrast to the unashamedly theatrical style of the work, with its beautiful and gloriously uplifting music.

Philip Glass’ Cello Concerto no. 2 contains intense and elegiac music distilled from the soundtrack to the film in its subtitle. This performance is given by the same cellist and conductor that gave the piece its world premiere last year and have just recorded it to great acclaim. John Adams’ spectacular Harmonielehre was triggered by a dream he had of a supertanker suddenly taking flight. It was a breakthrough piece in which the composer arrived at a new and confident means of expression, culminating in an exhilarating “tidal wave of brass and percussion.”

An Evening with Pam AyresPam Ayres brings her latest show to The Anvil following the recent publication of her new book of poetry, You Made Me Late Again!, copies of which she will be signing after the show.
Pam Ayres’ work is funny, and approachable. It sounds simple, as though dashed off, but this is deceptive. Her hair-trigger timing, her eye for the detail of everyday life, and for the absurdity therein, makes for an art that hides art.
Pam has sold millions of books, CDs, and DVDs over the years, and she is still a regular on TV and radio, on programmes such as Just A Minute, Ayres On The Air, QI, Countdown, and The One Show.

Philharmonia OrchestraDvořák Cello ConcertoSuk PragaJanáček Sinfonietta
Truls Mõrk celloJakub Hrůša conductor
Dvořák’s Cello Concerto possesses an unceasing flow of invention and lyricism unmatched even by this composer. Suk’s orchestral portrait of Prague pictures it emerging from morning mist, with contrasting themes recalling both episodes from its history and the composer’s own life there, before ending in a blaze of glory. Janáček’s striking Sinfonietta grew into his greatest orchestral work, a confident portrait of “the contemporary free man” that the composer hoped would thrive in his newly independent homeland. The Philharmonia Orchestra is Anvil Arts Orchestra in Partnership

The HaymarketApollo Theatre Company presents
Carrie’s Warby Nina Bawden
adapted for the stage by Emma Reeves
directed by Tim Astley
“It’ll be such fun, living in the country. You’ll love it!”
When the Second World War air raids threaten their safety in the city, Carrie Willow and her brother Nick are evacuated to a small village in the Welsh countryside. Billeted with the kind but timid Auntie Lou and her miserly brother, Mr Evans, the children quickly learn that this is a place unlike any they have ever known and begin to discover the joys, and terrors, the countryside possesses. From the whispering woods of Druid’s Grove to the harvest fields, the children get to know and love their new world and the characters that inhabit it; the aging, glamorous Mrs Gotobed, Mr Johnny, who speaks a language all of his own, and Hepzibah Green, the mysterious housekeeper with her tales of magic and wonder and a terrifying curse…
Apollo Theatre Company bring Nina Bawden’s classic novel to the stage in a feast of story-telling and nostalgia fit for the whole family.

An Evening with Sam BakerSam Baker is a man of few words. Always beautifully chosen, and fully wrought. He turned inward, to relearn the use of his body and brain, after a Peruvian train bombing almost killed him in 1986. It’s taken years to heal.
Comparisons have included Townes Van Zandt, Randy Newman and even Lou Reed. But a better comparison might be that of Raymond Carver. Baker’s pen is precise, cunning and original, often weaving humour with human suffering and tender beauty.

Philharmonia OrchestraStrauss Four Last SongsBruckner Symphony no. 9
Eva-Marie Westbroek sopranoChristoph von Dohnányi conductor
Richard Strauss’ Four Last Songs sum up his lifelong love of the soprano voice in music of rare and heartwarming beauty. The final pieces the composer wrote, their world premiere was given by this orchestra in 1950. Bruckner’s majestic Ninth Symphony was also his last work, left unfinished at his death. The first movement arises, like that of Beethoven’s Ninth, from a mysterious beginning, the second is a nightmarish scherzo, and the final slow movement is the most beautiful and profound music the composer ever wrote.

In partnership with Anvil Arts, Central Studio and Proteus Theatre Company
The Good Person of Szechwan by Bertold Brecht
directed by Amanda Affleck-Cruise and Ross Harvie
“The world can stay as it is if enough people are found living lives worthy of human beings. Good people, that is...” decreed the gods.
Set in an unjust society where good can only survive by means of evil, this adaptation of Brecht’s 1941 classic story of altruism, morality and disguise follows Shen Te, a young prostitute, as she struggles to lead a life that is deemed “good” by the gods; which her fellow citizens of Szechwan merely pay lip service to. Once again, the Basingstoke Youth Theatre returns to the Haymarket stage with an epic tale for the Basingstoke Festival, giving life to the alter-ego Shen Te adopts to protect her own interests.
Utilising both music and physical theatre, this interpretation of The Good Person of Szechwan demonstrates how society can change to solve the social and economic problems we face. How can a good person thrive in a world that is not good... only you can decide!
