From Pastor Mike

“And during supper Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come

from God and was going to God, got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself.

Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that

was tied around him.” – John 13:3-5

It has been a month of grieving and loss after the Ash Wednesday fire at Salem West, but that does not mean

the work has stopped. Not at all! Within hours dozens of volunteers rallied to clean up, move, restock and

continue the ministry. Hundreds of people saw the need and gave generously to keep Salem West’s work among

our community’s needy alive and thriving. In many ways the disaster has been one of Salem’s finest hours as

folks continue to step in and serve in countless ways.

Our Lord taught us so to serve, giving us an example to follow that last evening with his disciples.

“He Took a Towel” by Pastor John Peterson

He took a towel that night before the Passover was to begin, laid aside his cloak, filled a basin with

water, and washed the feet of his disciples before their last meal together.

It was an act of love – it was to serve as a sign that the Savior of the world came not to be served, but to

serve. It was a sign to show his closest friends how much their faithfulness meant to him. It was an act of

love – the Son of God washing the feet of those who followed him.

He took a towel – it was the sign of a servant, the symbol of a slave. One who was willing to bend his

knee so that others might be comfortable.

He took a towel – it had to be done before supper, before the suffering began there at the table when he

had to tell them of one’s betrayal – sold out for 30 pieces of silver.

He took a towel – knowing that soon there would be: a final meal, an hour of anguish in the garden, the

kiss of the betrayer, the soldiers, the trial, the crown of thorns, Barabbas, the long walk to Golgotha, the

hammer, the nails, the pain, the thief on the neighboring cross, the anguish, the death, and finally the

borrowed grave. In spite of it all – He took a towel.

And now – his eyes meet mine – his hand reaches out as he says – “Now, take a towel and follow me.”

Thank you for your service, faithful followers of Jesus at Salem! And God bless you as we journey with Jesus

from Lent through Holy Week to the pure joy of Easter.

- Pastor Mike

A Word from Council President, Lynn Hansen

Dear Salem family and friends,

On March 1 at 1:15 AM, I got the call about the

devastating fire at Salem West. The staff and

volunteers went to work to see if anything was

salvageable. Plans were made to get deliveries back

on schedule and to replenish the shelves. The

outpouring of help and donations from the Salem

family and the community has been heartwarming.

On Thursday, March 2nd it was amazing to see the

Salem West staff and volunteers already at

work. They were living out their faith according to 2

Corinthians 4, “Therefore, since through God’s mercy

we have this ministry, we do not lose heart.”

The Old Testament lesson on March 12 was from

Exodus 12. Verses 2 and 3: "I will make you a great

nation and I will bless you. I will make your name

great and you will be a blessing. I will bless those

who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse;

and all peoples on earth will be blessed through

you." We have experienced blessings that were

promised in this lesson with prayers, donations, and

volunteers. We will continue to serve and be a

blessing to those in need because of this generosity.

The coverage on radio, television, in newspapers and

emails, phone calls and word of mouth has increased

awareness of Salem's Outreach ministry. I have been

amazed by the response from outside of our

community. I think of Lent as a somber time of

meditation and reflection. The aftermath of the fire is

a somber time for our Outreach Ministry but we all

know that Easter follows. New life will come to this

ministry in the future.

We received an SOS for the March Council meeting

commending Glen Helm for the wonderful job that he

does in keeping our facilities neat, clean, and well-

maintained. Thank you, Glen!

I want to recognize all of our staff and volunteers for

graciously taking on the extra work following the

fire. The receiving deliveries, preparing reports,

record-keeping, answering questions and phone calls,

sorting, labeling, in addition to their "regular jobs" has

been amazing. Keep up the good work.

Thank you all for your help and support.

Lynn Hansen, President of the Salem Church Council

work! Thanks again!

LIBRARY NEWS

National Library Week is April 9-15, 2017. The

theme this year is: "Libraries Transform".

We received some new books and purchased DVDs.

If you are a Prayer Buddy for one of the Sunday

School children, you will want to check out the

book while they were sleeping by Anne Arkins and

Gary Harrell. It has 60 days of prayers based on 12

character traits.

Life Is Not a Dress Rehearsal is a book by Sheri

Rose Shepherd. She uses humor to tell her faith

story.

The Tribute by Dennis Rainey focuses on the fifth

commandment: Honor your father and your

mother, that your days may be prolonged in the

land which the Lord your God gives you. Exodus

20:12 He provides many stories and examples in

this book of how life is enriched when we follow

this commandment.

Sharing Family Time - Simple Ways to Make the

Most of Busy Days by Aid Association for

Lutherans is a great resource to create quality time

with your family.

If you enjoyed the DVD, The Ultimate Gift, you

will enjoy the sequel, The Ultimate Life.

In honor of the 500th Anniversary of the

Reformation, we suggest watching the DVDs A

already mentioned yard work projects that they

would like to hire the youth to work on. I will be

figuring out a schedule for Saturdays or Sundays in

late April and early May soon. Don’t hesitate to

contact me!

After the fire… Pastor Mike felt it important to note that in addition

to the donations of goods and financial gifts

arriving daily for Outreach Ministry at Salem, there

have also been phone calls and letters – clergy from

the area stopping by to offer help and words of

encouragement and gifts from many area churches;

Immanuel in Crosby dedicating their Ash

Wednesday offering to Salem West for recovery

efforts, phone call from Pastor David Carlson,

Gloria Day, Duluth – their church burned one year

ago; and many others. All blessings in the wake of

tragedy.

On the third day, the friends of Christ coming

at daybreak … found the grave empty and

the stone rolled away. In varying ways they

realized the new wonder; but even they

hardly realized that the world had died in the

night. What they were looking at was the

heaven and a new earth; and in a semblance

of the gardener, God walked again in the

garden, in the cool not of the evening but of

the dawn.

Salem Outreach Committee (Emergency) meeting March 3, 2017

Present were Pastor Mike, Greg Meyer, Don Hales, Bev Kunz, Joyce Kohnen, Noreen Steinbrecher, Sandy Kretlow and

via phone Cecil Schmidt.

MSC: Motion, Seconded and Carried.

Devotions and prayer was led by Pastor Mike.

Don Hales said we need to look to the future. It will take time.

Greg’s Update as of March 3

Met with the Fire Marshall and insurance adjuster

Building is a total loss, maximum of what it was insured for

There is coverage for building, what contents that are lost new and donated, personal, computer files

Documented what was taken out of the garage and thrown

New dressers, cribs and mattresses will be total replaced

$15,000 from insurance for demolition

We were able to save the data off our computers which is great

$10,000 was given from insurance immediately for anything urgent

Over $1400. 00 has already been received at the Deerwood Bank for the Salem West Fire Emergency Fund

We have been offered the back part of Deerwood Technology building for storage, also garage at Kim Coughlin,

storage shed just south of Deerwood, and Gary Roth’s building for office space.

WJJY radio station in Brainerd is sponsoring a Semi Truck from TCBX to collect donations from the Brainerd area. It will

be Tuesday, March 7, 2017. We should monitor the donations so we don’t get things that we can’t use.

Lots of fund raisers at area churches are in process.

There is misinformation traveling around like we don’t have insurance, hate crime. None of this is true.

Bev Kunz will help Greg with insurance as she has previous experience with insurance.

Jerry Hutchison has been a big help. We need to get a permit for demolition. Dumpsters have to be held for 3 weeks

before the dump will accept them. The land fill doesn’t want a fire to restart.

Cecil made a motion that the site will be totally cleaned up as promptly as possible, that includes driveway, slab, with one

request to save any tree or bush that has been planted in memorial. MSC

Cecil also proposed that we use our Website at Salem to update any happenings and concerns regarding Salem West

construction site, etc.

In the short term we need to concentrate on:

Settlement of insurance

Laundry

Clean-up

Storage of donations and sorting

Jim Mayne has been a great help in retrieving our files on the computer.

A motion was made to accept Gary Roth’s offer to use his building for our office. We pay rent equaling the cost of

utilities. MSC

Laundry will be taken care of by Kay Cooper calling members to help. Option: Could take a large amount to laundry if

we get behind.

Renee Shields has offered to help. She is our organizational consultant. She has laid out plans when we started the

Mustard Seed. She is very good at figuring out where we should go from here, such as rebuilding on existing site, add

onto MS if we can, build on a new site. All will have to wait for insurance.

Next week we have to record all the items that we lost for insurance purposes.

Thank you to Jerry Hutchinson and Jim Mayne for their expertise. Also thank you to all the volunteers that help with the

clean-up and sorting of all the donations.

A motion was made to authorize Greg to any actions taken with any motions that we have passed today. MSC (Greg

Abstained)

Motion was made to skip next Thursday meeting. E-mail will be used for any communications. MSC

Meeting was adjourned.

Next meeting: April 13, 1:00 p.m.
