Kristallnacht and the Rise of Nazi Germany– 4/4 On November 9 to 10, 1938, a series of coordinated attacks (a pogrom) took place against Jews throughout Nazi Germany and parts of Austria. The name Kristallnacht comes from the shards of broken glass that littered the streets after windows of Jewish-owned stores, buildings, and synagogues were smashed. It was part of Nazi Germany’s broader racial policy, and the begin-ning of the Final Solution and The Holocaust. The event sent shock waves around the world. The reasons for Kristallnacht, what occurred, and the responses to it, are part of the story of development of Nazi economic and political persecutions of Jews during the 1930’s. We’ll examine this prelude to the outbreak of World War II and its impact on Nazi policy and plans for the final solution. Let’s explore the inner workings of the joke and hear what philosophers and psychologists have been saying over the decades about what we find humorous. Handouts will be supplied by the instructor. CRN 12035 | 1 Friday | 4/11 | noon-1:30 PM | AST E202 | Fee: ……………………………………………………………….$5 Instructor: Michael DiRaimo received his M.A. from Brown University, and is professor of English at MCC, where he teaches a variety of writing and literature courses.

HOW TO REGISTER FOR COURSES: There are many easy ways to register for MCC courses. Call 860-512-3232 to register by phone. Be sure to have your credit card ready. Or, if you have access to the Internet, you can download a registration form at www.manchestercc.edu/students/resources/pdf/2012-2013-Winter-Registration-Form-and-Info.pdf and send in your completed form with a check or money order. You can also find a registration form in any printed MCC Credit-Free catalog. The easiest way is to register in per-son the next time you are on campus for a monthly OAA meeting! The registrar’s office is in the main lobby of the Lowe Building and is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Pre-registration enables the course scheduler to assign a room with appropriate occupancy and also enables instructors to plan for enough hand-outs and other course materials. Most important, if a session has to be canceled or rescheduled, pre-registration generates a class roster that ena-bles students to be notified.

Check the Spring 2014 catalog for many more interesting courses that start in April. Register with a friend!

Remember, as OAA members, you could each qualify for a 20% rebate on credit-free course tuitions over $10 up to a maximum of $50 per membership year!

The UPDATE is published each month except July and August, for and by OAA members, and is edited with the assistance of MCC’s Credit-Free Programs Office.

Information on OAA activities and other items of interest to OAA members will be considered for publication.
