Transcript of The Artisans Cup
A steadily growing subset of the millenia-old art form,
led by Ryan Neil and his groundbreaking Bonsai incubator
Bonsai Mirai, American Bonsai honors tradition while pushing
the artistic boundaries of what is possible.
BUT ONE THING HAS REMAINED MISSING:
A world-class exhibition of American Bonsai, showcasing the best and brightest talent in tree design as well as the artisans who are
creating stunning supporting design elements such as ceramics, woodwork, tools, and more.
THE ARTISANS CUP IS THE LEADING
EXPRESSION OF AMERICAN BONSAI,
SHOWCASING THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF
CRAFTSMANSHIP AND SKILL IN AN
EXPERIMENTAL ENVIRONMENT THAT
WILL ENGAGE AND INSPIRE.
The event will celebrate Bonsai as a powerful
collaboration between humans and nature.
It will recognize those who are humbly and
diligently pursuing ever-higher levels of
craftsmanship and skill, and it will attract and
inspire a new generation of Bonsai enthusiasts.
Debuting in Portland, Oregon in Fall 2015, The Artisans Cup will feature exceptional tree submissions from Bonsai curators
and caretakers from the United States and Canada, as well as creations from some of America’s foremost artisans.
1
The primary goal of The Artisans Cup is to firmly secure a place for bonsai in the global art canon.
3
Third, we hope to encourage a new generation of Bonsai enthusiasts, attracting those who may be
experiencing Bonsai for the first time.
THE TREES
The Artisans Cup will feature up to 100 trees. Submissions will be open to anyone meeting the event’s criteria, and will be evaluated by a selection jury of Bonsai experts. If accepted for display at the event, trees will be entered into competition for
the title of Artisans Cup-winning tree. Trees will be judged by a panel of 5 world-renowned Bonsai professionals, with the top three
trees being awarded $10,000, $5,000, and $3,000 respectively.
INTEGRAL TO ANY WELL-EXECUTED
BONSAI IS THE TOOLS AND MATERIALS
USED TO CULTIVATE THE TREE, AND
THE CERAMICS AND WOODWORK USED
TO HOUSE AND DISPLAY IT.
THE CRAFT
The Artisans Cup will feature the work of those who are creating these items, both in the tree displays themselves and in dedicated vendor
displays. Vendors will have the opportunity to both display and sell their goods, along with the chance to interface directly with event attendees
and foster public interest in the art and craft of Bonsai.
