Dear Friends, Oh, to be in England now that April’s there And whoever wakes in England sees, some morning, unaware, That the lowest boughs and the brushwood sheaf Round the elm-tree bole are in tiny leaf, Whilethechaffinchsingsontheorchardbough In England—now! Robert Browning’s well known words from his poem “Home thoughts from abroad” describe that moment of new life appearing all around us. Bird song lifts our hearts and we look forward to more appearancesofdearlylovedblossom, flowersandleavesasbirdshurrytobuildtheirnestsinhedgesandtrees. April is full of surprises, and this year Easter Day falls towards the end of the month. We wait in our LentenpurpleforthatgloriousmomentofrevelationasChristrisesfromthetombandfillstheworldwithhope and joy. Risen Christ, you revealed yourself to Mary in the garden at dawn; Reveal yourself to us in the dawnings of our lives. Yourevealedyourselftothefisherfolkastheytoiledtogetherattheirwork; Reveal yourself to us in the long hours of our toil. You revealed yourself in the broken bread of Emmaus; Reveal yourself to us in our homes, around our tables. You revealed yourself to Thomas when he felt the wounds on your body; Reveal yourself to us when we see and feel the wounds of the world. You revealed yourself to many as they met beneath the skies; Reveal yourself to us in the wonder of your creation. (Lindisfarne Community)

Yours in Christ, Heather

PARISH COUNCIL NEWSDOGSThe Herefordshire Council dog warden has agreed to attend the Parish Council meeting on 7th April to give information and offer advice on the subject of dog fouling in Bodenham. The warden will confirm that dog control orders cover the whole of Bodenham.

A HORSE............. has been ridden in the churchyard, causing damage to the turf and distress to grave-holders. If anyone knows who was responsible, a quiet word asking them not to do it again would be appreciated.

FLY TIPPING............ has been reported between Bodenham Manor and the A49. It has been reported to Herefordshire Council, who will prosecute any offenders who can be identified, because fly tipping is a criminal offence.

POTHOLES, etcThe most direct ways to report potholes and other defects are to use [email protected] or www.fixmystreet.com . If you prefer, contact the Parish Clerk on [email protected] or 01568 797132.

A LITTER PICK ................ has been arranged for Saturday 5th April. Equipment will be provided by Balfour Beatty. Meet at the parish hall at 10. Soup, rolls, tea and coffee afterwards. Please come along and help to keep Bodenham tidy.

DEFIBRILLATORThe Parish Council is exploring the possibility of acquiring a defibrillator, which could save lives, because an ambulance cannot reach Bodenham within the 8 minute period crucial for survival from a heart attack. It has been suggested that the defibrillator could be located outside the parish hall.

PLANNING APPLICATIONSThe following planning applications have been considered by the parish council: * Brook House: Demolish and rebuild rear extension. Approved . * Land adjacent to Stoneleigh: outline application for site for residential development. Refused.

Herefordshire Council have made the following decisions: * Maund Court: demolition and rebuild of poultry house. Approved with conditions. * Land adjacent to Hill View: erection of agricultural worker’s dwelling with garageand new vehicular access. Refused.

BODENHAM BOWLING CLUB A glorious sunny Sunday saw 30 or so members old and new at the Siward James Centre to register for the coming season and enjoy a delicious afternoon tea. THANK YOU to those who supplied and served the tea and cleared away afterward. Mr Barry Carter our chairman addressed the members to advise them of plans for the season ahead and also the outcome of the meeting with the trustees of the Siward James and Arkwright trust which he had told the membership would be taking place at the annual dinner in November. Having been asked by the trustees to make some changes to what we have in the recent past done Mr Carter felt it essential that the membership be advised by him directly. The opening of the season is APRIL 26th at 14.00 at our green within the Siward James Centre. On this occasion we enjoy a bring and share tea and Mrs Cherryl Hurton (refreshment co-ordinator) would appreciate being advised if you wish to offer items for tea. Club nights resume on MONDAY 28th APRIL 18.15 for a prompt 18.30 start. It is planned to have details of club competitions fairly early in the season to enable members to commit and plan their schedules. We always welcome new members, we can supply woods for you to borrow and all we ask is that you haveflatsoledshoes.

6Parish Hall News The Committee is currently focusing on repairs and renovation of the fabric of the building, including replacement of windows, interior and exterior paintwork, and improvements to lighting. The advantages and disadvantages of installing solar pv panels on the roof are also being explored.

If you would like to get involved in the running of the hall or any of its events come along to a meeting, or contact one of our committee members. Our management committee meetings are held on the second Wednesday of alternate months. The next meeting is Wednesday 14th May at 7.30pm.

ENTERTAINMENT After the success this season of the two Arts Alive shows, ‘The Harmonettes Go Into Orbit’ and ‘A Funny Little Thing Called Love’, we are now looking forward to the next season of Arts Alive Events. Dennis and Tricia Jackson attended the 2014/15 Arts Alive menu launch on Sat 15th March and were very excited at what is on offer. The aim is to put on at least one Arts Alive show in the coming year, and maybe something more local as well. Look out for further announcements, and come and make the most of having a village hall with the facilities to accommodate shows such as these.

FLICKS IN THE STICKS – Films are shown monthly on the second Friday night of the month, at 7.30pm, between September and April. Refreshments are available during the interval. Many thanks to Chris and Mike James for organising the programme, with all the work that entails.Next film:

Friday 11th April: ~ Captain Phillips ~ an extremely exciting 2013 action thriller, based on the true story of the capture in 2009 of an American cargo ship by Somali pirates. With an outstanding performance by Tom Hanks, and newcomer Barkhad Abdi winning a Bafta for his part as the pirates’ leader, it’s definitely worth coming out for.

For reminders and previews of Parish Hall events, why not join us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bodenham.parishhall

You can also get full information about the Parish Hall and its activities from the Bodenham Parish website: http://www.bodenhamparish.org.uk/ , which is updated daily.

MAKING THE MOST OF THE FACILITIES AVAILABLE AT THE PARISH HALL. Regular or occasional Hall users, are you aware of the IT facilities available at the hall? The Management Committee wants to remind users that we have an extensive range of technology available for use during your visit to the hall. These facilities include broadband, projectors and a printer. If you wish to make use of any of this equipment, on either a regular or one off basis, please speak to a member of the committee. If you would like to know how to use this equipment, or have your own but don’t currently have the knowledge or the confidence to use it fully, then let the committee know. Herefordshire’s Fastershire offer free introductory courses, which could be arranged locally. In addition, if there’s enough interest the Parish Hall could offer more advanced courses, for example in digital photography, with the support of the Parish Council. Please contact Rhian Powell (01568 797132) or any other member of the committee if you would be interested.

St Michael’s CE Primary School News Visiting Author: We are being visited by local author Simon Morse on Thursday 27th March. Simon will mainly be working with Classes One and Two, but the rest of the school will have a chance to meet him in a special assembly on the day. Simon has written books including “The Adventures of Rocket Kid” and “The Positively Pleasant Pirates”, which he will have on sale at a discounted price at school. TanzaniaLink: “Jambo!” and welcome back to Mrs. Coleman who has returned to us from a very wet Tanzania (it was the rainy season!). She has been able to share lots of her experiences with us all and she has reaffirmed the link that we have with Tengeru Primary School. World Book Day 2014: Thank you to everyone who supported this event—the children as usual thoroughly enjoyed themselves and they looked wonderful dressed as their favourite characters from books. Year 5 Condover Residential Trip: Our Year Five children, along with Miss Powis and Mrs. Clarke will be travelling to Condover Hall, near Shrewsbury from the 19th-21st March. They will have the opportunity to take part in a wide variety of outdoor and adventurous activities during their stay. We wish them all the very best and are sure that they will return with lots of special memories! Sports Relief Day: This event is being held on Friday 21st March and all proceeds raised will go to charity. We are inviting everyone to come to school that day dressed in sports kit. During the day we will give all of the children the chance to be sponsored to run a mile (17 times around the playground—we have measured it!) at school. Obviously for some children this will be too much and so please could we ask that families send in a donation to charity anyway. Thanks very much. Class One @ Queenswood: Well done to Class One for exploring Queenswood for us on their Welly Walk earlier this week. It was lovely to listen to the children as they told us all about what they had done!

Easter Service: Advanced warning that this annual event in the life of our school takes place this year on Tuesday, 8th April at 2.00p.m. at St. Michael’s church. We look forward to seeing lots of family members there to join with the children as we celebrate the meaning of the Festival of Easter.

StArToTs:Stay and play. Every Friday (term-time only) at Bodenham Pre-School, Bodenham School. 9.00am -11.00am. Contact School for further details.Friday 4th of April – Play session.Friday the 11th of April – Yummy Easter nests and decorated eggs.Friday the 2nd of May – Parachute fun morning. Songs and games with the giant parachute!Friday the 9th of May – Play session.Friday the 16th of May – Animal session. Animal crafts and hopefully some animal visitors!Friday the 23rd of May – Play session. Tag Rugby: Thanks to P. C. Paul Sparrow who has been coaching our oldest children at school. We will be sending a few teams of children to Hereford, for the West Mercia Police Tag Rugby Festival on Wednesday, 26th March, where they will have the chance to compete against many other schools. Website: Please remember that we have our website that is available for people to find outwhat is going on at school. It is updated regularly with photos and news; for example with news of the latest events at school. The address is:www.st-michaels.hereford.sch.uk

Friday 25th April 7.30pm to 10.30pm at Broadfield Court

‘EAST WEST INFUSION’ play The Vineyard!

The VINEYARD got off to a wonderful launch (Friday Feb. 28th). Forty souls came and gave a hearty shove down the slipway - she’s now well afloat, and further fitting out completed. So, here’s a raised glass to all who helped: the excellent musicians of course; the folk who came to listen and made such a receptive audience; and to Alex at Broadfield for the venue, with it’s historic

atmosphere and superb acoustics. Heartfelt thanks to all!

This month, we aim to weigh anchor and hoist the sails - accompanied by fine flute and accordion playing from Phil and Caroline who are ‘East West

Infusion’. They've played Bodenham before, to much acclaim - a lovely blend of traditional music from both western and eastern influences (check them out on ‘Myspace’). They’ll be supported by musicians (the ‘regulars’) who played in

February and March - plus some new faces!

Admission, on the door, a steal at £2.50! Children U16 £1.50.

Draft beer, snacks, and Broadfield’s own wines available at the bar - but please note, only drinks/snacks purchased on site to be consumed.
