2St Michael & All Angels’ Church, BodenhamDear Friends, As I write this there are black skies and yet another downpour is battering the windows. Soon, the sun will break through and everything will look different. We are so used to the changes of weather, and the changes of the seasons. We are surrounded by productive land, woods, streams, rivers, lakes, we have lovely views across the countryside wherever we go. It is sometimes hard to reconcile the privilege we have of living in such a fertile and peaceful place with the scenes we see from towns and villages devastated by war or natural disaster. It is hard for us to imagine how people who lived side by side can turn into enemies overnight and inflict violence on one another. We can often feel helpless in the face of so much need in our world and wonder what we can do. Jesus disciples once asked him to teach them how to pray, as they had seen Jesus praying on his own. The words Jesus taught them have become our Lord’s Prayer, where we ask that God’s will be done on earth. We know that Jesus teaches us that God’s will is that we should love God and love our neighbour, wherever our neighbour might be in the world. When we see and hear about tragedy and disaster in countries far away and in our own country, when we cannot find the words to express our sorrow, then perhaps we can pray as Jesus taught us, asking God to help us to do his will and find the way to bring peace to a troubled world. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Yours in Christ, Heather

Planning applications and decisionsThree planning applications were considered at the last Parish Council meeting, namely:- 161279: Shortlands, Pool Head, Chapel Lane, Bodenham, HR1 3HP: Proposed Demolition of existing single-storey extension. Erection of two-storey & single-storey extension. Replacement of detached single-storey garage with proposed double garage. No objection was made to this application, subject to satisfactory arrangements for sewage disposal.- 161435: 1-2 Venns Green Cottages, Marden: Proposed erection of two replacement dwellings and garages. Construction of associated works. The Parish Council resolved to strongly object to the application in that that it does not represent development of a comparable size and scale.- 161559: Land at Wynmoor: Application for Reserved Matters for 152415: proposed site for two dwellings. The Parish Council resolved to object most strongly to the current reserved matters application. They consider that it would represent totally inappropriate development that does not reflect the context of the site. It is felt that only single storey dwellings would ensure that neighbours’ residential amenity would not be unreasonably affected due to overlooking, overshadowing and overbearing impacts.Herefordshire Council has made decisions about the following planning applications;- 161559: Hollybush Cottage, Pencombe: Proposed demolition of garage and extensions. Construction of new garage and extensions complete with associated external works. This application was refused.- 161120: 1 Church Walk. Proposed side conservatory extension. This application was refused.

BODENHAM LEISURE CLUB
Our Photograph Picture Quiz of places in Herefordshire last month was quite a surprise as most of us thought we would recognise all the places. It was very enjoyable and made us aware to look around more while we are out and about. Thank you to our member and her family for sharing it with us.Monday 11th July at 1pm we will meet for LUNCH at the Parish Hall, always a pleasant light meal well presented and prepared by our able cooks. Let Dorothy Pugh know if you would like to attend, her number is 01568 797268.
Monday July 25th 2.30pm Jennifer Easson has kindly agreed to share with us her fabulous underwater photography. This would be a good time for visitors to come along and join us. No need to book just come in and make yourself comfortable.
Monday 8th August A full day coach trip will be arranged and details will be given out at the July meetings as well as being displayed at the Post Office and Parish Hall noticeboard. Last year the weather at the seaside was horrid, but hopefully we can enjoy some sun this time. For further details and to book a seat call Dorothy Pugh, or myself, Nan Murdoch 01568 797595.
Monday August 22nd at 2.30pm a display of members’ handicrafts will take place. We have a lot of talented craftsmanship among the members and this would be a good time to visit us. No need to book just join us.One of our members has prepared a Picture Quiz for our enjoyment.
At each meeting we hold a Raffle and there is a Sales Table with books and other items for sale. Tea and Coffee is always served. We meet regularly at the Parish Hall on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 2.30pm.

Wildlife Recording Extravaganza Fri 8-Sat 9 July
4pm-4pmThe BioBlitz is a 24 hour wildlife recording event.
Herefordshire Wildlife Trust is going to record as many living species as possible within the
Queenswood Reserve with the help of scientists, naturalists and volunteers. You can be part of it! Young or old, experienced or not there will be something you can get involved in. There will be talks from local scientists and practical
conservation workshops. Everything we find gets written down and kept as a record so that wildlife scientists and the people who look after the land know what wildlife they have and how best to
look after it.Venue: Queenswood Country Park, Hope Under

13Hampton Ward Newsletter. June 2016 This month I thought you would be interested in a few facts and figures regarding our beautiful county of Herefordshire. Could be very useful if you’re a quiz fan! There are just over 186 thousand of us, living in 82 thousand homes, scattered across some 842 square miles of towns, villages and countryside, in 239 single and group parishes. With 95% of the county being classified as ‘rural’, 23% of us are over the age of 65, with some 2 thousand souls being over 90. There are 2,000 miles of roads traversing the county, controlled by over 35,000 road signs and 750 bridges of all sizes straddle our numerous rivers, streams, brooks and culverts. The 12,500 street lights aren’t particularly evident in this Ward, but we have our fair share of the 1,300 litter bins, the 5,000 grit bins, the 2,100 miles of Public Rights of Way and the 200 hectares of grass verges. Before you ask, these grass verges will be cut twice each year and our parks and open spaces will be cut once every month.
On a different subject and for those of you who have, or are considering changing to an electric or dual fuel vehicle, the following information will be useful. From 1st June, Herefordshire’s council’s electric vehicle charge point network will be managed by ‘Chargemaster’ under the brand name of ‘POLAR’. From this date a POLAR card or access to a mobile phone will be required in order to use the charge points. Contact information will be displayed on the charge points and the Chargemaster helpline is manned 24/7. Information on membership and an application form can be found on the website: www.polar-network.com . The POLAR network has charging points across the UK. The good news is that Herefordshire Council will continue to offer free electricity, and free parking whilst recharging, at all the charge points across the county. So now could be a good time to consider going electric! For more information on the POLAR scheme and Chargemaster, have a look at their website www.chargemasterplc.com ‘Plugged in Midlands’ is a regional scheme which was set up to introduce over 500 electric vehicle charging points across the Midlands.
They provided the majority of funding for the charging points and have now expanded and form part of the POLAR national network, which is operated by Chargemaster Plc. See www.pluggedinmidlands.co.uk for further information. Finally, on Monday 6th June, the council’s planning committee approved plans to start building the new Southern Link Road. This will link the A465 with the A49 south of the city and will allow vehicles travelling to the Enterprise Zone at Rotherwas to avoid the city centre. More importantly, this road will be the first link in the chain of the new Hereford by-pass, which will incorporate a new bridge over the River Wye.Cllr Bruce BakerHampton Ward

St Michael’s CE Primary School News
HM The Queen’s 90th Birthday: On Thursday, 9th June, we took the children on the Golden Jubilee Walk around our local area, in order to help celebrate the 90th birthday of HM Queen Elizabeth II. After this, we all had a picnic back at school.Thank you so much to Mrs. Adams (Mum of Max, Harriet and Annabel) for the lovely cakes that she created for this special occasion. They were all very much appreciated! Cricket: We seem to be playing an awful lot of Cricket at the moment! Very well done to our Yr 5/6 Boys who last week won the local schools’ Kwik Cricket tournament and are now progressing to the County Finals in Hereford next month! Our Yr 4 Boys and Girls teams have also been playing and competed very well in their competitions. We are very proud of all of them! School Pond: In a recent newsletter we spoke about the school pond and how pleased we were to have this wonderful new learning resource available to us. It has been brought to our attention that we neglected to mention the huge amount of support that Natural England gave to the project. This included releasing Mr. Nigel King to allow him a significant amount of time to devote to the project. Nigel has remained committed to the project and the school, even though their personal circumstances meant that they had to leave the school, and the nature of his job changed during this time.Thank you very much to Natural England and to Nigel in particular for all of the efforts they put into making this project happen. Our School’s App: We now have our own school app. Please look out for a letter that gives a lot more information on this new development. Please download the app and try it out! Year Six London Trip: Very well done to our Year Six children who went on the London residential trip. They had a wonderful time and showed an excellent attitude throughout the three days. We had lots of compliments on their behaviour from people who met us. Summer Music Concert: Due to the fact that there seems to be less time for children to perform during our half-termly church services, this event was held at school in May. Families of children who play instruments and sing in the school choir were able to come along and listen to a musical extravaganza. Well done to all of the children who chose to take part and a big thank you to all of the adults involved, especially Mrs. Glover and Mrs. Mould. It really was a lovely evening. Trip to Elan Valley Dams: At the end of May Class One and children from Pre School went on a visit to the Elan Valley dams. They had a great time working with the staff at Elan Valley on scientific projects such as pond dipping and were very enthusiastic when they returned. Well done to all concerned! StArToTs – Stay and play. Every Friday (term-time only) at Bodenham Pre-School, Bodenham School. 9.00am -11.00am. Contact Steph 07968563744 or Laura 07966960708 for further details.
Website:Our website is available for people to find out what is going on at school. It is updated regularly with photos and news. You will also find on there the termly topic plans that show what their children’s classes will be covering:

‘Herefordshire Life Through a Lens’ is an ambitious community project from Hereford-based Catcher Media to record and celebrate the
social history of Herefordshire.
This four-year heritage and media community project has been inspired the photographic archive of the Derek Evans’ studio from the 1950s to the 1980s.Based in Hereford, Derek Evans worked for the
national press and TV in the heyday of news photography, and took hundreds of photographs celebrating many aspects of Herefordshire life,
including hop picking, the May Fairs, Hereford Utd and many more.
Derek’s archive photographs will be used to inspire different groups in our community to tell their own stories about Herefordshire’s past and preserve
those memories to come.
A touring exhibition of some of his photographs can be seen at: Leominster Library from July 4th to July 30th and Ledbury Library from July 4th to the 23rd.
For more information please contact Julia Goldsmith at Catcher Media on 01432 277424

Laurence John. To add further colour and diversity to the programme there will be a guest performance by
members of the Gilbert Consort of 16th Century music on period instruments including a virginal, recorder and
crumhorns!Admission the concert is free but there will be a retiring collection which will go towards St Catherine’s Church and Hereford Historic Churches Trust. Refreshments
will be available and donations for these would be appreciated.

Herefordshire countryside. Please be advised that car parking is on the road and access is by a steep path with steps but help will be provided for those with wheelchairs
if notice is given by emailing [email protected] in Quiet Places has proved a most successful first series of six concerts, visiting some loveliest churches in

HAVENLY GARDENS WEEKEND
A very big thank you to everyone who so generously supported the Havenly Open
Gardens on Saturday and Sunday, 4-5 June, whether by helping with organising and
running the event, by making donations, or by simply enjoying the three gardens and the refreshments, plants and honey products on
offer. We raised the magnificent total of £2,219 for The Hereford Haven and the vital work that it does to support all those being treated for
breast cancer or recovering from it.
Thank you again!
The Haven
Does your parish need to raise money?
As part of the Herefordshire Historic Churches Trust (HHCT) fund raising activities in 2017 we are
launching an exciting new Garden Scheme. For the programme we are looking for garden owners
who would be prepared to open their gardens, and more particularly parishes where a number of owners are prepared to open on the same day as part of a ‘village trail’. Takings would be split 50:50 between the nominated church of the owners and HHCT. Publicity, marketing and advice to owners
would be provided by HHCT. The scheme is based on a similar one which has been operating very
successfully for a number of years in Shropshire, which raises approximately £30,000pa.
If you are interested in becoming part of this very worthwhile initiative please contact John Handby
, email [email protected] or tel. 01989 730842 in the first instance for an informal
discussion of what is involved.
