HFSS Design Settings

• HFSS Design Settings • Select the menu item HFSS > Design Settings…

– Click on the Set Material Override tab

• Enable material override: If an object assigned as a conductor intersects multiple dielectric objects, the conducting object will take precedence in the area of intersection. All other intersections of conductors will be treated as errors.

• Notes:

– Conducting or dielectric objects that are completely contained within another dielectric object are permitted even if this setting is disabled

HFSS Design Settings

• HFSS Design Settings • Select the menu item HFSS > Design Settings…

– Click on the Lossy Dielectrics tab

• Automatically use causal materials: Objects with constant material permittivity greater than one and dielectric loss tangent greater than zero will be treated as frequency dependent. Their actual permittivity and conductivity will be determined by the Djordjevic-Sarkar algorithm. (Disabled by Default)

• Notes:

– RF Applications: Disabled

– SI Applications: Enabled

Materials: 3D Conductors

• 3D Conductors • HFSS implicitly places a finite conductivity boundary condition on the surfaces of 3D Conductors

– To set a DC Thickness for the implicit boundary condition select the menu item: HFSS > Boundaries > Assign DC Thickness.

• Solve Inside Conductors

– By default, Solve Inside is selected for all objects with a bulk conductivity less than 100000 Siemens/m and for perfect insulators

– Solve Inside can be determined by user – check or uncheck the box in the object’s Property window

Frequency-Dependent Materials

• Frequency-Dependent Materials • In the View/Edit Materials dialog

– Click on Set Frequency Dependency... Button

• Select one of the Frequency Dependent setup options available

• Here Djordjevic-Sarkar Model is selected

Anisotropic Materials

• Anisotropic Materials • Material can be defined with anisotropic dielectric properties

– In the View/Edit Materials dialog, change the Type to Anisotropic for Relative Permittivity

• Enter the permittivity tensor values in the Value boxes of the T(1,1), T(2,2) and T(3,3) rows.

Temperature Dependent Materials

• Temperature Dependent Material Properties • In the View/Edit Materials dialog, check the box for Thermal Modifier

– Select Edit from the dropbox in the Thermal Modifier for Bulk Conductivity

• Thermal modifier can be entered in as an expression or as an imported dataset if measured data is available

Spatially-Dependent Materials

• Spatially-Dependent Materials • Material can be defined as spatially-dependent, whose properties change over their length (or width or thickness).

– In the View/Edit Materials dialog, you can assign properties using cartesian coordiante [X,Y,Z] to assign the spatial properties for a material.

– Here the value of the Y dimension of the object affects the Bulk conductivity along the T(2,2) tensor.
