Some Thoughts from Pastor Judy Cobb. . . I am grateful again to all of you who have come to talk with me, all the work that is done in this congregation and most for our opportunity to gather in worship to praise God from whom all blessings flow. Please continue to repeat your names when you see me until I say your name first. Smile I know that this “getting to know each other time” will continue. We have two festivals coming: Reformation and All Saints. Reformation Sunday, WEAR RED, October 28: Do you know the answer to the following? What is the official date which marks the beginning of the reformation? What five major topics did Luther cover in the Small Catechism? Lutherans believe there are two sacraments. Luther defines a sacrament as something commanded by Jesus, has an earthly element connected to it, and has a promise attached. What are the two sacraments in the Lutheran church? Luther wrote hymns. In the ELW, which Luther hymn has the most verses? What is “ Mrs. Luther’s” full name? She never went by Mrs. Luther, by the way. These are some fun things to get you thinking. I will be sure to give the answers on Reformation Sunday. All Saints, November 4: This is one of my favorite festivals. In worship we give thanks to God for the SAINTS ALIVE (the baptized who surround us) and the SAINTS who have died. Thanks be to God for the children of the Heavenly father. . . Some Thoughts from Pastor Judy Cobb. . .

I am grateful again to all of you who have come to talk

with me, all the work that is done in this congregation and most for our opportunity to gather in worship to praise God from whom all blessings flow. Please continue to repeat your names when you see me until I say your name first. Smile I know that this “getting to know each other time” will continue. Reformation Sunday, WEAR RED, October 28: Do you know the answer to the following? • What is the official date which marks the

beginning of the reformation? • What five major topics did Luther cover in

the Small Catechism? • Lutherans believe there are two sacraments.

Luther defines a sacrament as something commanded by Jesus, has an earthly element connected to it, and has a promise attached. What are the two sacraments in the Lutheran church?

• Luther wrote hymns. In the ELW, which Luther hymn has the most verses?

• What is “ Mrs. Luther’s” full name? She never went by Mrs. Luther, by the way.

These are some fun things to get you thinking.

I will be sure to give the answers on Reformation Sunday.

All Saints, November 4: This is one of my favorite festivals. In worship we give thanks to God for the SAINTS ALIVE(the baptized who surround us) and the SAINTS who have died. For me, it is a wonderful time to take a count of so many who have given love, taught me, cared for me, mentored me, made me laugh, shared life with me. Aramaic. The first written versions were Greek. The vulgate (Latin version) was the Latin translation of the New Testament and as we know Luther translated it into German. In 1611 the King James version of the bible was completed and in 1662 the Book of Common prayer (Anglican church) the Lord’s prayer was included in a version similar to the “ traditional“ one spoken in our worship. The inter-Lutheran Commission on Worship included the “Ecumenical//Modern” version of the Lord’s pray in the Lutheran Book of Worship in 1978 just one year after the Anglican Church had also included it as an option in their worship. So, this prayer has been spoken in many languages and translated myriads of times. I am aware that this has been the subject of discussion at Apostles. The prayer said in more contemporary language, and the prayer said in old English speak to people in profound ways. We have memorized and prayed these 7 petitions for most of our lives. Some of you think that the language of “save us from the time of trial”, for example is better understood than “lead us not into temptation”. Some of you feel that saying the prayer in poetic language speaks to your hearts and faith. Both have merit. However, I can hear that there is discord in the worship about which one should be prayed. Some are louder than others, for example. I believe that the Body of Christ gathered would be better served with a compromise. We will learn from each other. I asked the Worship Ministry Team to try a compromise. The ecumenical Lord’s prayer will be used during the season of Pentecost (June-November) and the traditional one from Advent to Pentecost (December-May). This will begin on October 7th. May we pray “WITH ONE VOICE”. JOY TO EACH OF YOU.

Pastors for October The following pastors will be with us in October: Pastor Jim Nickols (7th), Pastor Judy Cobb (9th and 28th). Our very own Pete Liljeberg will be leading the worship service on October 21st.

“God’s Work, Our Hands” Sunday - What a Wonderful Day!

Our annual “Worship in the Park” started with a wonderful worship service at Whitcomb Lodge in Beaverdam Park. Pastor Jim Nickols presided at the 10:30 AM service. We used a care of creation liturgy that fitted the location perfectly - nestled in the woods overlooking the water. We enjoyed a picnic lunch and then several people participated in service projects in the afternoon. We made 29 health kits for mission trip to Guatemala, cleaned out the fish pond for Lotte and Rick Mathias, and cleaned up 2 yards for some clients of Bay Aging - a local agency who cares for the elderly. A total of 28 children, youth and adults participated. Despite the rain, it truly was a wonderful day!!

Whale Song

Behemoth of the deep- In haunting refrain I hear you speak-

Taunting with eerie echoings The secrets that you keep.

O giants of the sea-

Sing sea chants harmoniously- Resounding through your ghostly abyss

Mysterious melody.

Mild and majestic whale- Lonely sea song is yours to bewail-

Lure my mind to depths of tranquility Help set my spirit a-sail.

We will have a screening of the movie, “Living on a $1 A Day” - an interesting movie that shows what it might be like to live on a dollar a day which is what many Guatemalans deal with. After watching the movie, we will have lunch and a discussion - Pete and Betsy Liljeberg will be bringing some Guatemalan dishes - everyone is asked to bring a dish to share. Pete and Betsy are also looking for people to join them for the trip which is March 3-9, 2019. They are specifically looking for a nurse.

An Update From Nancy Gillespie’s sister, Susan Naanes - “We are burying Nancy’s ashes next to Vernon in Hammond, Illinois on October 10, 2018. My daughter Debi and I are flying into Indianapolis airport on October 9th and we will spend the night and rent a car then drive over the next day to join John for private service. John (Nancy’s son) plans to do some traveling and sight seeing before he returns to Virginia. Debi and I will fly home on October 11, 2018. I don’t know his plans for the future or any more information about his sister Patricia. If John never has a funeral or memorial service for Nancy, I may fly back to Virginia in the spring and plan a memorial service for Nancy at Apostles for the final goodbyes. Please let the church know I am praying they will find a wonderful new pastor.” + + + + + + + + + + + +
