  Rejected establishment institutions, class structure, nuclear weapons & modern war!

  Believed in Eastern teachings, sexual liberation, vegetarianism, environmentalism, communal living & use of psychedelic drugs!

Early Hippie Movement!

  Movement began in Berkley, California & Greenwich Village, NYC!

  Led by Allen Ginsburg & Timothy Leary... emerged out of the University intelligencia!

  Promoted the use of LSD, Mushrooms, Marijuana!

  “Turn on (to drugs), Tune in (to music), Drop out (of society)”!

Haight-Ashbury District!

  Neighborhood in San Francisco, California!

  Mecca for “The Hippie Movement”!

  Many high school & college students “dropped out” of society & moved to Haight-Ashbury!

  Summer of psychedelic music, drug use, sexual freedom, creative expression & ultra-liberal politics!

Social/Political Leaders!   Jerry Rubin: Counterculture leader during 1960s &

1970s... Dropped out of UC-Berkeley in 1964 to focus on social activism!

  Abbie Hoffman: Leader of the Youth International Party (Yippies)... leader of counterculture revolution during 1960s & 1970s... Dropped out of UC-Berkeley in early 1960s... helped organize Woodstock!

  Allen Ginsberg: Antiwar & sexual liberation activist, writer/poet & artist... leader of NYC “beat generation”... leader of “San Francisco Renaissance” & “Summer of Love”!

  Timothy Leary: Psychologist & writer, experimented with acid on students at UC-Berkeley... created “turn on, tune in, drop out”... ran for Governor of California!
