Bob Schreiner Cultural Madness: Diagnosing the Problem Part V We come now to a consideration of the third of the three aspects of the Cul- ture of Death which St. John Paul II diagnosed as infecting contemporary cultures to- day, namely: The Death of Man. This is the most evident and terrifying conclusion to the infections which the Culture of Death brings about. When God is eliminated from the consciousness and the conscience of man, everything is permitted. And when human reason becomes disconnected from the eternal truths, then madness passes for reasonableness. Then, it is inevitable that the final and most devastating target of the Culture of Death is humanity itself and the human person in particular. Once Fredric Nietzsche set in motion a nihilistic worldview in which nothing has meaning except my own exercise of power over all else; and once Karl Marx absolutized that power in the State as the only worthy entity to exist, it was inevita- ble that the human person would be viewed as a thing to be used and not valued as an infinite good in him/herself. The Death of God and the Death of Reason set up the Death of Man throughout the bloodiest century in human history (thus far.) The 20 th century was marred with the march of the Culture of Death leaving in its wake nothing but death, destruction, and ruin. But for all the nightly terrors which reigned down upon cities like Dresden and Nagasaki, it was the flood of tears unleashed upon the world when the first gates of the concentration camps were unlocked. It was then that we began to realize just how truly terrifying the Culture of Death in its threefold attack had be- come. The Culture of Death had become an organized ideology infecting and deci- mating one Christian culture and nation after another. Some of the oldest and most profoundly Christian countries in Europe had capitulated to the bark and bully of one demagogue after the other. Brown shirted enforcers were sent into the streets armed with shouts and clubs with the task of silencing the vast majority of believers who knew it was wrong, but said nothing. They did nothing. And they watched silently as smoke and ash billowed from the chimneys of Auschwitz, Dachau, Buchenwald and others. They watched silently as a people‟s entire memory and identity were being destroyed, one person at a time. Meanwhile, the Death of Reason was exercising new levels of its madness and it‟s target was human life and its preferred instrument of destruction was medical exploration. The evil darkness of a Nazi doctor‟s „experiments‟ on human beings shocked the world when once they became known. Varying forms of abortion, sterili- zation, euthanasia, surgical sex selection, genetic manipulation, were some of the hor- rors being developed. Once known, Dr. Josef Mengele‟s satanic work shocked the conscience of the world….for a time. Bad – even sinister ideas take time to yield their bitterest fruits.

Twenty Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

CREDO: A New Evangelization Witness By Fr. Bob Schreiner Cultural Madness: Diagnosing the Problem Part V We come now to a consideration of the third of the three aspects of the Cul-ture of Death which St. John Paul II diagnosed as infecting contemporary cultures to-day, namely: The Death of Man. This is the most evident and terrifying conclusion to the infections which the Culture of Death brings about. When God is eliminated from the consciousness and the conscience of man, everything is permitted. AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL

COMMUNION

when one cannot receive

the Holy Eucharist:

My Jesus,

I believe that You

are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things,

and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment

receive You sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already

there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from

You. Amen.

Victim Assistance Statement of the Diocese of Crookston If you or someone you know has been the victim of sex-ual misconduct on the part of a priest, deacon, or indi-vidual representing the Diocese of Crookston, its par-ishes, or its schools, your first call should be to law en-forcement. In addition, the diocesan Victim Assistance Coordinator is available at 218-281-7895 (24-hour confidential number).

Each fall, Our Northland Diocese publishes a parish dinner listing online and in print. The COVID–19 pandemic has created an uncertain environment regarding gatherings of people. Due to this situation, OND will not be printing a list of fall dinners. Any parishes still hosting a dinner in some form have been invited to share their information via [email protected]. Any notices received will be pub-lished at www.crookston.org/falldinners. Those wishing to attend a listed dinner are encouraged to contact the parish before going to ensure it is still happening and to learn of any precautions being taken.

Continued from Page 1 The Culture of Death awaited the memory of humanity to glaze over the horrors of the mid-20th century. Once it became „the past,‟ the systemic death march slowly picked up again, missing not a step to advance its darkness. Though the death camps had closed and became museums, abortion clinics were now opened and the enjoyed being licensed, legal and funded by the modern State. Though Mengele‟s experiments were shut down, his racist eugenics experiments get carried on by Margaret Sanger and the institutionalization of her work: Planned Parenthood. [And they boldly call themselves „clinics,‟ which provide „health care‟ for women! Madness.] The absolutization of power to reside in the State via National Socialism and Communism always sought to eliminate the role of the traditional family, parenthood and traditional marriage in favor of the collective. Now those same goals are enshrined in quasi-political movements that have their own hashtags ( # ). And the horrifying reality is that these three as-pects of the Culture of Death have found new proponents who attempt now to eradicate any memory of identity of our Judeo-Christian heritage. They do so by taking up the tactics of the Jacobin guillotines of the 18th century and the clubs and fists of the Brown Shirts of the 20th Century. They shamelessly purport to have the goal of human equality, while in truth they have the singular intent to effect its destruction. Madness. The Culture of Death is the diagnosis of what we‟re seeing and experiencing as such cultural madness in our time. St. John Paul II saw it. He grew up in it. He studied it closely both in its intellectual infrastructure and within its horrific real-time effects. And he came to the See of Peter with an inspiration to lay out a Pastoral response which can lead us through the treachery of the current Culture of Death with hope and confidence. Just days after his election on October 16, 1978 in his first formal address he uttered the words which would mark the whole of his pontificate and which ought to echo in our hearts as a perennial battle cry for every generation of Christians. He said: “Brothers and sisters, do not be afraid to welcome Christ and accept his power. Help the

Pope and all those who wish to serve Christ and with Christ's power to serve the human person and the whole of mankind. Be not afraid. Open wide the doors for Christ. To his saving power open the boundaries of States, economic and political systems, the vast fields of cul-ture, civilization and development. Be not afraid. Christ knows “what is in man.” He alone knows it. So often today man does not know what is within him, in the depths of his mind and heart. So often he is uncertain about the meaning of his life on this earth. He is assailed by doubt, a doubt which turns into despair. We ask you therefore, we beg you with humility and trust, let Christ speak to man. He alone has words of life, yes, of eternal life. BE NOT AFRAID!” In the next three CREDO articles, I will summarize the sainted Pope‟s Culture of Life response of hope to each of the three aspects of the Culture of Death which have now been introduced.
