Dear Friends of UMKC:As the UMKC Foundation closes the books on the 2013-2014 fiscal year, we can once again say, “What a ride!” We have so much to celebrate.

From the arts and entrepreneurship to pharmacy and law, excitement about the University of Missouri-Kansas City is evident and growing. We continue to be grateful to the many alumni and friends who are investing in this great institution.

Thanks to a record number of financial donations — 57,507, to be specific — the foundation raised $40.1 million last year, boosting to more than $217 million the total amount raised through The Campaign for UMKC. The foundation publicly launched the $250 million capital campaign in 2011.

Support from many generous donors has meant adding vital scholarship dollars, attracting top names to the faculty and advancing major initiatives that will shape UMKC for many years to come.

Each year we are honored by the confidence and contributions that so many generous supporters give UMKC. Clearly, last year was no exception. The many gifts — and the belief in UMKC that they represent — are propelling this great university on its way to being one of the premier urban universities in the country.

2014 Award of Distinction

The UMKC Foundation is proud to present its 2014 Award of Distinction to philanthropist and civic leader Julia Irene Kauffman at its Oct. 2 annual dinner.

Julia Irene is not only the driving force behind Kansas City’s Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts but also a major supporter of the Kansas City Ballet, the Kansas City Symphony and many other arts organizations.

UMKC is no stranger to her generosity. Julia Irene has served as a trustee of the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance, and last year she endorsed the next great vision for Kansas City arts: a downtown campus for the arts to house the Conservatory. The Muriel McBrien Kauffman Foundation that Julia Irene leads pledged a $20 million matching grant to the downtown arts campus project.

When announcing the gift, she said the downtown project “has the potential to bring excitement and broad revitalized economic development to downtown, to the Kauffman Center and to other arts groups located downtown.”

UMKC had another great fundraising year. What were some of the highlights of the campaign’s fifth year?Last year the foundation raised $40.1 million, the fifth-best year in university history. We received the fifth-largest gift in UMKC history, $6 million to purchase land for the planned downtown arts campus, and the seventh-largest gift — $5.6 million from the Hall Family Foundation for renovations to Spencer Theatre, home of the Kansas City Repertory Theatre, and for Department of Theatre scholarships. We also increased the UMKC Foundation endowment to $34.5 million from $29.7 million.

What keeps people coming back with more and more support?They are excited about the potential of this university on all levels, from the proposed downtown campus for the arts to the new Edgar Snow Reading Room and Emeritus College Suite in the library. They are interested in the Robert W. Plaster Free Enterprise Center, the Berkley Child and Family Development Center’s new playground equipment, the Toyota Continuing Education Center and the Burns & McDonnell Student Collaboration Space in the School of Computing and Engineering, and much more.

Are people still enthusiastic about supporting The Campaign for UMKC?Support continues to grow. During 2013-2014, we received seven new gifts of $1 million or more and, significantly, set another record for the number of gifts received. The foundation took in 57,507 gifts, more than 7,000 higher than the record number received the previous year. By these indications, I would say support remains impressively strong.

What are the foundation’s top projects for the coming year?The top projects for 2014-2015 will be record-breaking for UMKC. We will:

Raise $21 million to build a downtown campus for the arts for the Conservatory. This will mean we raised $48 million in private dollars.

Raise the remaining $2 million to complete the $5 million renovation of UMKC’s James C. Olson Performing Arts Center, home of the Spencer Theatre. We will work with the Kansas City Repertory Theatre on this project.

Raise $1.5 million for the Honors Program and establish our first Honors College. The creation of an Honors College will attract the best students from Kansas City, the state, the region and the nation in order to create a significant high-impact learning environment that will increase our community of high-achieving student scholars.

As we near the end of the capital campaign that we launched in 2009, the enthusiasm, generosity and support of our community continue to excite us with every call and every gift we receive. People are seeing the results of their contributions and, I promise, another wonderful and rewarding year lies ahead for Kansas City’s university.

Downtown arts campus has a home

In May, the UMKC Foundation announced that a group of anonymous donors had pledged real estate for the planned downtown campus for the arts. The gift is valued at $6 million.

A downtown arts campus, which will house the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance, has long been a dream for UMKC and the city. It moved closer to reality in June 2013 when the Muriel McBrien Kauffman Foundation pledged $20 million toward the project. That matching challenge grant pushed the foundation nearly halfway toward the $48 million in private dollars it will need to ask the state for matching funds for the project. The foundation’s goal is to raise those funds by June 30, 2015.

The donors who arranged for the land purchase — called “a group of angels” by UMKC Chancellor Leo E. Morton — gave the future downtown campus a dream site. The 80,000-square-foot tract covers a full city block bounded by Broadway, Central, 17th and 18th streets.

Securing land directly south of the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts has pushed the ball forward on the downtown project and is encouraging many other donors to step forward with gift commitments, said UMKC Foundation President Murray M. Blackwelder.

Building a downtown campus will address several significant needs: increased space and improved facilities for the university’s visual and performing arts programs; room for growth on the landlocked Volker campus; and a boost to the city’s employment, activity and residency in the urban core. A campus in such close proximity to professional arts venues also will provide great opportunities to UMKC students studying downtown.

New professorship for law school

The UMKC School of Law announced the largest gift in the school’s 119-year history — a $2 million bequest from attorney Ralph G. Wrobley and his late wife, Madeline. The estate gift will establish the Ralph and Madeline Wrobley Distinguished Professorship in Law and Entrepreneurship, an endowed position that will strengthen the Law School’s continued focus on entrepreneurship.  

Wrobley, who did not graduate from UMKC’s Law School, spent his legal career in Kansas City as a managing partner with two large law firms and as a partner in a third. He said he wanted to support the school.

“UMKC Law School has played an important part in the legal community in this town and has made a major difference in Kansas City,” Wrobley said.

Law School Dean Ellen Suni said the gift will play a significant role in helping establish a Center for Law and Entrepreneurship at UMKC. She called Wrobley “an icon of the Kansas City legal community.”

“Getting such significant support for our program will go a long way toward helping us educate our students to be entrepreneurial in their lawyering and to become entrepreneurs themselves,” Suni said. “It will also assist us to become thought leaders in law and entrepreneurship.”

Gift provides pharmacy scholarships

The School of Pharmacy announced a $1.7 million estate gift from alumni Andy and Carol Riley in May. Intended to provide scholarships, the gift also may support the school’s new satellite location in Springfield, Missouri.

“Andy and Carol Riley are the kind of alumni who truly exemplify the UMKC spirit,” said UMKC Chancellor Leo E. Morton. “They respect the value of education, and they understand how important it is to open up additional avenues of access to education.”

Andy Riley, a 1974 graduate of the School of Pharmacy, said he and his wife, Carol, a 1975 graduate of the School of Education, want their gift to provide an opportunity for someone to attend the school who otherwise could not.

After graduation, Andy Riley started his career as a pharmacist by taking over his family’s pharmacy at 72nd and Troost in Kansas City. His father, Weldon Riley, graduated from the School of Pharmacy in 1960.

“UMKC Pharmacy School gave me the opportunity to be successful in life,” Andy Riley said. “I made lifetime friends in the program and learned the importance of collaboration for success.”

Pharmacy Dean Russell B. Melchert said the gift will provide “tremendous opportunities for future pharmacy students.”

Support for the arts

The Hall Family Foundation gave $5.6 million in June, the seventh-largest gift in university history. The gift includes $3 million to the Kansas City Repertory Theatre to renovate Spencer Theatre and lobby, $2 million to the UMKC Department of Theatre for student scholarships and $600,000 to the Rep.

The gift will support renovation of the lobby of UMKC’s James C. Olson Performing Arts Center, home of the Spencer Theatre. The $3 million gift for the renovation takes the Rep well on the way to meeting its $5 million goal for the project, which it hopes to complete by the 2015 holiday season. The renovation will include everything from the Spencer Theatre stage to the design of the front of the building.

The $2 million gift for student scholarships gives significant support to help the Department of Theatre attract top students to its program. Chancellor Leo E. Morton said it is about “creating the next generation of world-class artists right here in Kansas City.”

“UMKC can continue to be an artistic resource for the entire community,” Morton said. “The Spencer Theatre can now continue to host a rich array of UMKC student performances for the benefit of our students, alumni and the entire community we serve.”
