Friends of GlobeMed at UMKC:!!We've had an amazing year for GlobeMed at UMKC. We raised nearly $6000 dollars in just two semesters, held our first ever GlobeMed Banquet, and started a fantastic Goat Micro-Finance program with our partner KCRC. But that's not the only reason we're proud of this past year. We saw a movement begin to take place in our members and a passion emerge where every single GlobeMedder at UMKC took on the role of a leader. That's not something we can teach or raise enough money to do, it just happens when a group of passionate individuals come together to achieve a goal. Our goal was social justice, and we may be a ways away from achieving it, but we're a group of fired up individuals ready for change. MISSION STATEMENT

ONE BILLION PEOPLE ACROSS THE WORLD LACK ACCESS TO HEALTH CARE SYSTEMS*. EACH DAY, MORE THAN 36,000 PEOPLE DIE PREVENTABLE DEATHS. WITHOUT ADDRESSING POVERTY AND POOR HEALTH, WE CANNOT BREAK THIS CYCLE OF SUFFERING. UNIVERSITY STUDENTS HAVE THE PASSION AND ENERGY TO HELP TACKLE THIS CHALLENGE. GLOBEMED AIMS TO MEET THIS CHALLENGE BY ENGAGING AND TRAINING STUDENTS TO WORK WITH GRASSROOTS ORGANIZATIONS ACROSS THE WORLD TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF THE IMPOVERISHED. ABOUT US GlobeMed at UMKC  

GlobeMed at UMKC was founded in 2006 when GlobeMed was founded nationally. Early on, we were a very small group, with barely enough members to fill an executive board. In 2008 we began in earnest however, and started to work with Maison de Naissance in Haiti as well as expanding at UMKC with an extraordinary boost in membership. !!We transitioned into our current partnership in 2010 with Kabwohe Clinical Research Center in Bushenyi, Uganda. It has been an amazing journey working with them on HIV management, public health and malnutrition over the past year. We've raised well over $10,000 to help fight malnutrition in their local communities and have now embarked on two GROW Internships, sending students to their clinic for weeks at a time each summer. We now have implemented a membership policy as well, and we're proud to announce we have a group of 25 committed individuals hungry for change and social justice!!

KEY FACT: KCRC has 1500 HIV patients enrolled in ART therapy with more than 3000 general patients in general care.!

KEY FACT: When KCRC was established a reported 11,000 persons were HIV positive in its District. !

[About Kabwohe Clinical Research Center] FOUNDED IN 2004

KCRC was established due to the gross amounts of Ugandans living in poverty and stricken with HIV. Dr. Elioda founded the clinic with the intent of providing some relief to his nation’s poor. GlobeMed was allowed to join with KCRC in 2010 and has been primarily focused on addressing the public health needs of the community it serves. KCRC however works independently of GlobeMed's activities and is primarily funded by PEPFAR. It provides care to HIV patients as well as the local community. Also, the clinic supports education by providing health insurance to hundreds of students enrolled in local schools.!!

KCRC was founded by Dr. Dr. Elioda Tumwesigye, a prominent member of the Ugandan Parliament, and funded through PEPFAR.!!The clinic provides primary care to HIV infected families as well as provides an insurance plan for school children. !!

[KABWOHE CLINICAL RESEARCH CENTER]  

GlobeMed at UMKC  

[Why malnutrition?]!KCRC's patient population is primarily those with HIV. It is incredibly important that children with HIV have good nutrition to not only grow but to stave off further infections. Some HIV medications require good nutrients and a health GI system to absorb the medication and to be effective.!!Thus our focus has been on malnutrition as a way to improve HIV therapy and improve child mortality and growth indices.!

Micro-loans of an initial 50 goats, then offspring will be distributed throughout local community in

Bushenyi, Uganda.!!

The central objective of this project is to reduce the incidence of protein energy malnutrition among children of less than 16 years

of age and their respective families, using home raise, locally born, female and male goats. Female goats will provide milk for the

specific family and any offspring will be distributed throughout the local community as they are born. Male goats can be loaned for stud services for specific income generation. This will enhance

food and economic security within the beneficiary's families.!

First Annual GlobeMed Benefit Banquet at UMKC FEBRUARY 28, 2011

GlobeMed at UMKC spent over a month preparing a benefit dinner for out partner KCRC. The event turned out to be our biggest ever and featured presentations by GlobeMed staff and a Key note address by Patrick Lucaci, a UMKC medical student from Uganda and a passionate advocate for the nation's youth movement. In attendance were professors, physicians, instructors, and students from multiple universities and cities that cared enough to come together to raise awareness for KCRC and contribute to the fight against malnutrition. The event was our chapters most successful ever! We raised over $1300 in just one night! !

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE YEAR  

GLOBALHEALTHU

globalhealthU has made a tremendous impact on our GlobeMed chapter. Not only has globalhealthU allowed us to explore social inequities on a global scale but it has challenged us to think globally and act locally to fight injustices.!!Our core group has been able to be strengthened from a combined effort of community building exercises and globalhealthU topics. The camaraderie among my peers has exponentially increased. We are starting to understand what we as members of GlobeMed are trying to accomplish. I can only imagine what impact globalhealthU will have on next year’s group.!

globalhealthU is a GlobeMed designed curriculum that enables

students to develop a critical understanding of issues in global health and apply this knowledge! to their work with communities

around the world!

World Day of Social Justice

FEBRUARY 20, 2011 Over 40 students came out to celebrate the World Day of Social Justice by contributing to each of the 8 Millennial Development Goals. We came together, all wearing red, and created a huge AIDS ribbon in our quad. Then we dispersed, each volunteering at a service event focused on a specific MDG goal. Some worked at a food packaging center for impoverished families and others just got out and helped recycle. Then at the end of the day, came all back for a benefit concert for KCRC!!

Game nights, dinners, event planning, and meetings gave the members a chance to get to know each other on a more personal level, making our experience in GlobeMed that much more rewarding. The tight-knit community formed around GlobeMed campaigns and meetings led to our expansion this year, forming a more welcoming atmosphere. The dynamic personalities and leadership by all members led to an incredibly successful year full of great memories! !

Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students make a positive impact in the community by working alongside their partner organization

!# OF GLOBEMED GROW INTERNS:!!LENGTH OF STAY:!!WORK DESCRIPTION:!We observed the progress of the previous year's crop project, determined the families who would most benefit from a goat as well as distributed the goats to them, and to started brainstorm and dream about the next year's project. Daily, we would join 2-3 members of KCRC’s staff to visit families that were served by KCRC. We toured their gardens and met the people. We probably visited 40-50 households. Finally, at the end of the trip we met with Cleophas and Sulait and identified 10 members of the community that demonstrated the greatest need for and readiness to accommodate a goat and held a “ceremony” during which we handed off the goats. !

WORLD DAY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE

GLOBEMED AT UMKC joined 31 other GlobeMed chapters across the nation in a network-wide commemoration of the 3rd Annual World Day of Social Justice on February 20, 2011, by asking students, professors, and community members on campus an open-ended, thought provoking question relating to social justice. !!OUR QUESTION: [The change I want to see in the world is ____.]!!BEHIND THE SCENES: The question we posed was grounded in the quote "be the change you want to see in the world." We reformulated the quote to ask individuals what change would look like to them. The response was impressive. We saw students, faculty, community activists and local business owners engage in a real discussion about what social justice is, and the result was some amazingly insightful answers. We then asked them to summarize their answer into a couple words and write them down on a piece of construction paper. !!MORE WDSJ ACTION -----------------------------------!![MILLENNIAL DEVELOPMENT GOALS]: Broke into teams that addressed each MDG: we had groups recycling, volunteering with food packaging and working with male cooks to advocate for gender equality. The day ended with a benefit concert, and all the proceeds went to our partner in Uganda.!!!

OUR FUTURE

In the coming year I plan on expanding on what I've learned from GlobeMed. I plan on transitioning from an active member to an alumni, from an undergraduate student to a full time Medical Student, and from a passive observer to a more pro-active professional in the medical field. I'm going to take what I've learned from this year and begin to go out into our local community, starting our school's first ever "Public Health Interest Group" and begin to use the community-based partnership model to begin to advocate for change right here in Kansas City. When I leave, and graduate, from UMKC I'll be a resident in Internal Medicine, but I want to make sure to get an MPH and continue my passion for global health anywhere I practice. It'll be a long road ahead, but I'm looking forward to it! I've been so blessed to have been part of GlobeMed, and I'll carry that to wherever I am in 2012, 2015, or 2050!!-Matthew Goers, c/o 2011!
