This report summarizes the membership and activities conducted by the Pontificia Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra Student Chapter of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute during the 2017-2018 academic year.

MISSION & GOALS

The objective of the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra student chapter is to develop the knowledge about seismic design and sustainable structures in order to stimulate investigation, promote new technologies and techniques, and to improve Seismic Engineering in the Dominican Republic,

CHAPTER ACTIVITIES

Activities 2016-2017:

• EERI-PUCMM Student Chapters meetings in order to prepare for the competition, September 2017- March 2018.

• Welcome meeting for the new members of the EERI-PUCMM Student Chapter, May 2017. • Architecture workshop on building with Balsa Wood, January 2018. • Structural Dynamics Workshop, September - December 2017. • ETABS Workshop, November 2017. • Seismic Design Competition, June-July 2018. • Casual meetings with Structural Engineer Leonardo Reyes Madera.

REGULAR CHAPTER MEETINGS

In our regular meetings we discussed:

• Remind chapter members of their responsibility in the team. • Plan upcoming activities and projects. • Follow-up planned activities.

September – December 2017 – Structural Dynamics Workshop w/ Eng. Leonardo Pockels

One of the chapters faculty advisors, Structural Engineer Leonardo Pockels, had the initiative to start the Structural Dynamics Workshop due to the fact that it is of highly importance for the competition, and structural design and analysis. Every Friday from September to December, we gathered for two hours to learn as if it was part of our curriculum. The class was given with a followed-up program and visual representations.

November 2017 – ETABS Workshop w/ Eng. Marcos Paniagua

This workshop was given in order for students to manage the program that was going to be used for the competition, and for general comprehension on a virtual structure that represented an actual structure. Engineer Marcos Paniagua gave the workshop with visual representation (using the program) and a personally written ETABS manual.

November 2017- EERI-PUCMM Student Chapter Launch featuring Engineer Leonardo Reyes Madera

To celebrate the official launch of our student chapter, we prepared a conference presenting our team, and our mission and goals, featuring a conference with Structural Eng. Leonardo Reyes Madera in which he spoke about seismic history and seismic design in our country.

January 2018 - Architecture workshop on building with Balsa Wood

The team was called to participate in a workshop where architects would teach them how to work (cut, glue, clean, etc.) on balsa wood. All EERI PUCMM Student members had to participate in order to help with the balsa wood structure model for the competition. Materials used: balsa wood, various types of glue, scissors, and blades. This workshop was a complete success.

July 2018 – Beginning of Earthquake Spectra Book Club

The Earthquake Spectra Book Club was formed with the intention of encouraging members of the EERI-PUCMM community to engage in discussions concerning topics of particular importance in earthquake research. In this club we discuss scientific papers, related to seismic investigation, every month. Normally Dr. Jaruselsky Perez-Cuevas assigns the paper in the beginning of the month and the club gathers by the end of the month to discuss such papers. This initiative helps the team in many ways, including the importance of investigation, which in the Dominican Republic it is not a common practice. This book club hopefully will be of benefit for all its participants.

SEISMIC DESIGN COMPETITION TEAM

For our second year qualifying for the EERI Seismic Design competition we tried to up our efforts in every single aspect that was going to be evaluated in the competition. We also tried to include more architects within our fold, to encourage harmony between the two fields. All this paid off with our beloved Helix Tower, an 18-floor building that awarded us the “Best Architecture Award” in the competition.

Team results and lessons learned

The team ended in 30th place. The competition was truly an out of this world experience for the team. We had the chance to meet other students with similar inclinations, and outstanding professionals in the field. Due to our experience in this 2017-2018 USDC, our team understands that reading the rules over and over is the key to success. PUCMM Student Chapter learned that striving for the best will lead in better results, and that the team must work together and harder if we want to succeed even more. Finally, our team realized the importance of team work when times get difficult, and that each member can rely on the other when in need of help, and that also goes in reference of helping other people.
