ReflectionLETTER FROM THEHEAD OF SCHOOL TOM DOAR III
I am often asked what makes North Shore special? Why have generations of alumni and families remained so committed to the School?
I relish being asked these questions and am always pleased to describe why North Shore’s mission is relevant, why our students are so compelling, why people care so deeply about the School and, finally, why the School remains vibrant and thriving after nearly 94 years.
North Shore matters because good education matters. North Shore matters because our students matter. North Shore matters because the North Shore experi- ence positions our graduates to make a di¤erence and to impact the world in very meaningful ways.
I see examples every day of Lower School, Middle School and Upper School students engaged, connected and involved. Their engagement is characterized by curiosity, commitment, spirit and perspective. Our students have opinions, they have insights and they are comfortable having
discussions with peers and adults. The potential of our collective student body is immense—potential that plays out daily in the classrooms, the corridors, on stage, in the gym and the playfields.
I find it di¤icult, if not impossible, to describe the typical North Shore student. I’m proud that these individuals can’t be categorized as athletes, or musicians, or artists or young scientists. Instead, North Shore students are all of these things— all are asked to engage broadly and all are encouraged to leverage their own distinct talents and passions. The North Shore environment works to encourage our young people to understand themselves—their strengths and weaknesses—and to understand others. They develop a comfort level with weighing in, o¤ering perspective, hearing others and being heard—making an impact.
North Shore is special because it is a school that puts students first. We work to deliver not only what students need— but what they need as people. Given the complexity of today’s society, the fast-paced-times we live in, the amount of change that is constantly occurring, and the shift to a more global dynamic, it is incumbent on schools to develop students who are not only capable, but who are confident, proactive, ready and eager to embrace and navigate change.
I am very proud that North Shore is that kind of place.
Finally, there is another question that I am asked. “Is North Shore, as an institution, as relevant today as it has been in previous eras?” My answer is absolutely. Possibly, more relevant than ever. The world needs North Shore graduates and North Shore graduates remain poised and ready to influence their world.
“…the North Shore experience positions our graduates to make a di¤erence and to impact the world in very meaningful ways.”

6 Acorn Annual Report 2012–2013
“It was a very long time ago that I was at North Shore, but it had
quite an impact on me—the School, every student I taught and
the people I met. I made sure the students, along with learning
science, expressed themselves in a natural way in the classroom
and I’m glad I was able to do the same.” Tom Wright, Former Faculty
ACADEMICS Through a range of experiences in and out of the classroom, students are
immersed in science, mathematics, humanities, language and the arts.
Our broad and ever-evolving curriculum challenges and engages students
to strive for personal growth and academic excellence.
“North Shore students
are highly motivated
and willing to try
di¤erent things.”
Ship Safford,
Upper School History Teacher
Acorn Annual Report 2012–2013 7
CHARACTER We believe in the importance of developing
individuals who are resilient, creative, confident
and who persevere. We teach students to be
self-advocates and expect them to own their
education and actions, preparing them for
lives marked by integrity, kindness, respect
and fulfillment.
“North Shore was such an instrumental part in molding me into the person I am today. I can
only hope that my contributions can help keep the School going so that others might have
half of the amazing experience that I had at North Shore. Not many people pine to relive their
Upper School days, but I would love to go back and do it all over again, even if it was exactly
the same in every way.” Benjy Blenner ’02
“We continue to be pleased
with the strong foundation
North Shore provided
our daughter. At college,
her curious mind and
her interest in exploring
all facets of campus life
reminds me so much of
what North Shore Country
Day achieves every day.”
Carol Hunt, Parent of Blair Hunt ’09

PARTICIPATION Realizing that students discover and develop their talents and passions through
action, we require full participation in arts, athletics and service. Engagement
in multiple disciplines expands our students’ understanding, commitment,
teamwork and potential.
“In my years at North Shore, having to be
on the Auditorium stage made girls brave
in the same way that football did for boys.
Yes, brave and willing to take chances.
Good preparations for life.” Katrina Wolcott Kelley ’43
“I am quite taken with the sense of school spirit
and the level of sports achievement at today’s
NSCDS. We didn’t have quite as much of
a robust flavor in my day. I will always keep
North Shore in my Annual Giving.” Jason Smith ’83
Acorn Annual Report 2012–2013 9
DIVERSITY We embrace diversity and global literacy to
build acceptance, strengthen compassion,
instill social responsibility and expand compe-
tencies that enable students to succeed in
a multi-cultural world. Students are enriched
by the inclusion of individuals with varied
talents, voices and backgrounds.
“I think it is important
to teach media literacy
in school. It is important
to learn how di¤erent
media give their
own spin so that we
can understand world-
wide events not just
from one perspective,
but many.”
Charlie Hansell ’17

“It is my pleasure to give back
to a school that is giving my
daughter so much.”
Ted Howard, Current Parent
“NSCDS has made a huge
impact on my life. My
contribution seems minimal
to an institution that has
immeasurable value.”
Erik Sosa-Kibby ’93
“I love North Shore and all
that it gave me—I feel it every
day.” Susan Palm Waltrip ’59
COMMUNITY Our students are known and celebrated as individuals. Connections are formed
with teachers that endure beyond graduation. Multi-age relationships emerge
from our JK–12 campus to foster a strong sense of community. And, we leverage
knowing each and every student with our active network of faculty, parents
and alumni to help students reach their goals and aspirations.

RESOURCES Although people make up the core of our
educational experience, we recognize the value
and importance of the campus environment and
resources. Our thoughtfully designed classrooms,
course materials, outdoor spaces and campus
facilities provide the resources necessary
to maximize learning.
“Through our song-writing
workshop we give students
a real-life experience. They
write a song, go to a recording
studio and give a concert
with a professional composer.
It’s something the students
remember fondly.”
Linda Kiracibasi,
Lower School Music Teacher

“It’s incumbent upon all of us to continue
to give to keep this School growing,
evolving and strengthening.” —Susan
“I got involved because there are so many
great things happening here. The students
are what really drew me in. It’s extremely
rewarding to see them grow and watch the
way the faculty interacts with them. I rolled
up my sleeves and volunteered. It’s a great
way to give back and I’ve been having
fun ever since.” —Tom
“I am just ecstatic about the level of Annual
Giving participation this year in breadth and
depth. The students benefit with tremendous
programs that we wouldn’t otherwise be
able to provide.” —Tom
“There’s never a happier day than when
I walk out of parent-teacher conferences.
We’re all on a team trying to be a part of my
child’s process of growth. The students are
really known and it’s all about helping
to move them forward.” —Susan
CashThese gifts are fully tax deductible. The School will accept gifts by cash, check or credit card.
Stock GiftsA gift of stock saves two ways. You avoid capital gains tax on the increased value and you receive a deduction for the full market value of the stock at the time you make the gift. Please complete a Contribution of Stock form found on the website.
Gift In KindGifts of goods and services are always welcomed. There are many different needs at the School, and these donations can be distributed where best suited.
Matching GiftsBusinesses and corporations are encouraged to match the gifts given by their employees. Please check with your company to find out if it offers a matching gift program.
Planned GiftsThere are many vehicles available that offer tax savings and benefits: wills, life insurance, life income gifts, charitable lead trusts and real estate. Please let us know if you are interested in more information on planned giving opportunities.
For more information, please contact Molly Ingram McDowell ’80 in the Development Office, [email protected] or 847.441.3316.

The Benefit Board’s annual Auction and party “The Purple Wave,” was held on February 2, 2013. It was led by Auction Co-Chairs Diane Chandler-Simon, Deb Sobel, Tricia Valenti and President Bette Anne Du¤y. A total of $225,000 was raised to support the renovation of the Auditorium and Arts Center.
More than 300 guests attended the lively evening beginning with cocktails, appetizers and a silent auction. Students, dressed in Purple Wave t-shirts, greeted guests and sold raºe tickets. The guests progressed to the Auditorium where members of the senior class assisted with acting out the live auction items. Highlights included a Superbowl package, original Artwork by Elliott From of ArtBeat Live, passes to the Blackhawks Convention and autographed Jonathan Toews jersey, VIP tickets to Jimmy Kimmel Live and LA accommodations, one week in a 17th century Tuscan Villa, and a 4-night stay at a Wyoming Dude Ranch. The evening contin-ued with a bu¤et dinner catered by Bergho¤ Catering & Restaurant Group and dancing. It was a nice gathering for parents, former parents, trustees, alumni, faculty, sta¤ and friends to reconnect and spend time with friends.
Since 1981, the Benefit Board, formerly the Women’s Board, has raised more than $5 million through their annual auction to support areas of the School not covered by the annual operating budget. Our North Shore community greatly appreciates the Benefit Board members for their continued commitment to our students and faculty.
