For kids who have experienced devastating illnesses and injuries, the gap between hospital and home can seem almost beyond reach.

At Ranken Jordan, our team supports and guides our children and families as they rebuild their lives. We help them recover and develop the skills they need to make a successful transition home.

In this annual report, we introduce you to Sam and Makenna and their journeys.

At Ranken Jordan, the question was always, what does Sam need and what do

we need to learn to get him home?

Sam’s sense of humor makes laughter common around the house and is an important part of the healing process.

After Sam’s diagnosis with a brain tumor, we were expecting surgery, a week of recovery and home by Christmas. He was in a coma till mid February. When he came out of it, all he could do was turn his head slightly and track us with his eyes.

Our neurosurgeon lobbied for Sam to go to Ranken Jordan when he left the acute care hospital.

After we arrived at Ranken Jordan, we were a fixture. One Sunday afternoon Sam moved his foot. We were all in tears; the nurses were in tears. It was huge. Pretty soon he was squeezing our hands and sticking his tongue out at Lisa.

We would watch the nurses do something and then begin to take it on ourselves. Ranken Jordan doesn’t feel like a hospital. It feels like a place to do better and work hard. It is all about healing.

When it was time to go home, Sam had a list of Ranken Jordan staff he wanted to say goodbye to. When he visits, his nurses seek him out. They love to see how much more he’s learning and improving.

I saw my daughter come to Ranken Jordan — two weeks out of a coma from a car wreck, she had lost her arm,

she couldn’t stand — and in 28 days she was able to walk out.

We had a lot to overcome to be able to go home.

Ranken Jordan helps even the sickest kids shift their focus from what’s wrong to “Let’s go have a life.”

They are baking cakes in the kitchen and they don’t realize the dexterity stuff and the therapy that they are doing.

Ranken Jordan gets the families involved and it is just a bonding time. They taught us how to work through things so we were ready to live when we got home.

The way we attack problems is a little different now, but Makenna is back. She is playing tennis. She is going to school and back in choir.

We want to do whatever we can to support Ranken Jordan, so every kid who needs this kind of care has the same opportunity as Makenna.

Makenna asked, “Dad, can we come back to Ranken Jordan to play Challenger Baseball? I want to be a buddy.” On October 20, 2012, Makenna and her family drove in from their home in Oklahoma, so Makenna could participate in a Challenger Baseball game and assist other girls.

Parents need to feel hope.

Hope their kids will get better. Hope that their family can carry on and their kids can lead their best lives no matter what.

One reason I’m so proud of Ranken Jordan is that we offer parents the opportunity to practice living so they have the confidence to manage at home and in the community.

I will never forget the mom who came to me at our Kids’ Walk this year in tears. Her son, Ashton, was nine months.

Within 24 hours of admission to Ranken Jordan, Ashton had done the Kids’ Walk with mom, a nurse and a respiratory therapist. His mom said to me, “I didn’t think it would ever be possible for my son to go outside.”

Something that simple had seemed beyond reach. With the help of Ranken Jordan, Ashton’s mom will be able to take Ashton out in his stroller with no assistance.

The need for our kind of care has never been greater. Our model is less expensive than acute care, so we are able to dedicate more time to preparing kids with complex medical conditions to succeed at home.

At Ranken Jordan, we reduce the cost to the healthcare system and the burden on families and kids who already have more than enough to bear.

We have consistently run a referral list of 20+ for our inpatient care for several years. We are now actively planning an expansion so we can help more families and kids successfully cross the bridge to home.

Our outpatient and community programs are also a bridge to a fuller, healthier life for our kids and families. We served approximately 400 kids in our outpatient program this year. We held dozens of wonderful, awe-inspiring community events – including our Kids’ Walk and six Challenger Baseball games.

There’s no joy like seeing the difference your support makes in the lives of our children and families. If you haven’t yet had the opportunity to come out in person to enjoy one of our events or take a tour, I encourage you to join us and bring your own family.

The bridge is not just about a medical situation – it’s about home, family and community. You are a major part of our kids’ community.
