The Fenimore Art Museum had a remarkable year in 2013 in many ways. The exhibitions and programs were exceptionally strong, and led to a spectacular 20% increase in attendance by year’s end. During the height of the summer season, we featured The Hudson River School: Nature and the American Vision from the New-York Historical Society and The Wyeths: A Family Legacy, both of which were enormously popular. The Hudson River School exhibition was our contribution to the “Festival of the American Romantics,” a cultural partnership which included the Glimmerglass Festival and Hyde Hall.

Our American Indian programming was also very strong, with the exhibitions Splendidly Dressed: American Indian Robes and Regalia from the Thaw Collection and Plain and Fancy: Native American Splint Baskets from the Ralph T. Coe Foundation. These installations complemented the lively programming at our Native American site, Otsego: A Meeting Place, which featured a summer-long Artisan Series that brought Native artists to Cooperstown to demonstrate their work and share their knowledge of Haudenosaunee traditions.

The year was marked by many other programs that are worthy of note: National History Day in New York State, which once again brought hundreds of energetic and enthusiastic students to our campus for the state finals; a revamped Art by the Lake which continues to grow in scale and reputation; and our popular Food for Thought gallery talks, which delighted members and visitors alike throughout the season.

As always, none of this would be possible without our talented and dedicated staff and volunteers, our highly committed Board of Trustees, and our generous donors, members, and visitors. Thank you all for another truly memorable season in Cooperstown.

MISSION Welcoming and connecting people to our shared cultural heritage through exhibitions and programs that provoke, delight, and inspire.

ABOUTNew York State Historical Association (NYSHA) has been welcoming and connecting people to our shared cultural heritage since 1899 through exhibitions and programs that provoke, delight, and inspire. NYSHA’s collection, showcased in the Fenimore Art Museum, contains some of the best examples of American landscape, history, and genre paintings. Additionally, the Fenimore Art Museum houses the Eugene and Clare Thaw Collection of American Indian Art and one of the nation’s most comprehensive and significant American Folk Art collections. NYSHA’s Research Library holds thousands of original manuscripts and documents, as well as more than 80,000 volumes on American, New York State, and local history. Of note are first editions of James Fenimore Cooper’s novels.

In the history of American art there is perhaps no greater family than the Wyeths. N.C. Wyeth’s children frequently used the word “magical” when recalling their upbringing. The Wyeths: A Family Legacy brought some of the Wyeth magic to the Fenimore Art Museum.

We featured the work of the entire family—N.C.,

Andrew, and James, as well as Carolyn, Henriette and her husband Peter Hurd, along with family friend and illustrator, Howard Pyle. The Wyeths influenced each other’s techniques, media and subject matter and taught each other back and forth across the generations. Their works stand together to create a unique vision of American life.

The exhibition was a favorite with our guests and members. A highlight was a visit by Victoria Wyeth, who shared her personal insights into the work of her grandfather, Andrew Wyeth, during gallery tours and an evening lecture. Victoria also generously donated her time, visiting a local nursing home to share her memories of her grandfather and his work.

Thank you to the Morgan McReynolds Group at Morgan Stanley and Golden Artist Colors for sponsoring the exhibition. The Wyeths: A Family Legacy featured masterworks from the Brandywine River Museum, as well as other institutions.

THE HUDSON RIVER SCHOOL: NATURE AND THE AMERICAN VISIONJUNE 29 TO SEPTEMBER 29, 2013

Landscape can uniquely serve as a powerful narrative device, embodying ideas about nature and culture. Our spectacular feature exhibition showcased the extraordinary depth and richness of the New-York Historical Society’s landscape paintings by artists of the Hudson River School. During the first half of the nineteenth century, this loosely knit group of artists, together with like-minded poets and writers, forged a self-consciously “American” landscape vision and literary voice. Both were grounded in the exploration of the natural world as a resource for spiritual renewal and as an expression of cultural and national identity in a period of rapid change in America.

Our exhibition took the visitor on a journey, beginning with New York City, traveling up the Hudson River, through the Catskill Mountains and the Adirondack region, east to New England, west to Niagara Falls and the Rocky Mountains, to South America and even to Italy. In Thomas Cole’s magisterial series of five historical landscapes, The Course of Empire, our visitors witnessed the rise and fall of a civilization. Timelines distributed throughout the gallery taught about the Romantic period in which these artists worked. Each one addressed a different topic that influenced the landscapes the artists depicted, such as American historical events, literature, music, scientific discoveries, tourism, European painting, and transportation.

The Hudson River School: Nature and the American Vision was part of “The Festival of the American Romantics,” a joint literary and arts collaboration among the Glimmerglass Festival, Hyde Hall, the Olana Partnership, and the Fenimore Art Museum.

The exhibition was made possible in part by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. Thank you to Fenimore Asset Management Fund of The Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region for providing additional support.

2013 EXHIBITIONS

SPLENDIDLY DRESSED: AMERICAN INDIAN ROBES & REGALIAMARCH 30, 2013 - DECEMBER 29, 2013

The exuberant and varied expressions in Native American clothing headlined a special exhibition of the Thaw Collection. Clothing, footwear, headgear, jewelry and accessories are created in styles and from materials distinct to region or cultural group. In celebrations, ceremonies, and public gatherings clothing communicates wealth and honors individuals. Clothing is also powerfully interwoven with spiritual beliefs. Many cultures associate the proper attire with protection or success in earthly matters, such as those encountered in warfare or hunting. Additionally, designs on garments provide devices for stories and are important elements of oral tradition and storytelling.

PLAIN & FANCY: NATIVE AMERICAN SPLINT BASKETSAUGUST 10, 2013 - DECEMBER 29, 2013

An exhibition and catalog showcased 30 hand-crafted ash splint baskets, ranging from practical storage and market baskets to fanciful baskets with exquisitely decorative splint work and stamped, painted, and dyed decorative elements. Starting in the 19th century, baskets became a most important source of income for many Native people. Today’s basket makers fine tune and hone their skill working in traditional, as well as with newly inspired shape and decorative elements. However, this art form faces a powerful enemy. The Emerald Ash Borer threatens to kill most of the 7.5 billion ash trees throughout North America.

A majority of the baskets were loaned from the Ralph T. Coe Foundation for the Arts, Inc. in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

BREATHING LIFE INTO STONE: THE SCULPTURE OF HENRY DISPIRITOIn 2013, the Fenimore Art Museum published a wonderful memorial to Henry DiSpirito. The book chronicles Henry’s life and features his beautiful, compact, and expressive sculptures that reflect the artist’s love of nature and respect for humankind.

Throughout the summer, the museum welcomed Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) artisans to create artwork and speak with visitors about how their Native traditions inform their work. The series was funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for a second year. Artisans included Ronnie-Leigh Goeman (ash baskets), Peter Jones (clay sculpture), Veronica Reitter (traditional clothing; cornhusk work), Gerald Schenandoah (deerskin and fur outfits), and Sam Thomas (raised beadwork; leather jackets and moccasins).

RESEARCH LIBRARYOur Research Library’s special collections uniquely tell stories that shaped the daily lives of New Yorkers and our nation as a whole. We made great progress in making our collections more accessible by properly housing and cataloging items, digitizing materials and placing them online through our own website, the Pathfinder catalog, as well as the website: New York Heritage, A Digital Collection.

The South Central Regional Library Council funded a project to digitize finding aids to our manuscript collections. The Community Foundation of South Central New York enabled us to make more accessible Civil War manuscripts, in observance of the 150th anniversary of that war, as well as the John J. Burger New York State Railroads collection.

We also processed and cataloged twenty-four manuscript collections/items to strengthen our comprehensive Delaware County collection. Support from the O’Connor Foundation made more accessible a shoemaker’s ledger, farm diaries, a wheelwright’s account book, Susquehanna Turnpike

photographs, an Indian treaty, and the papers of naturalist and writer John Burroughs, as well as the John More Association materials (family of The Farmers’ Museum’s More House).

With a grant from the Delmas Foundation, our Librarians catalogued 27 farm manuscripts/collections from around the state, in addition to the Stuyvesant Fish papers. The Stuyvesant Fish letter books contain business and personal letters discussing political, historical, business, and cultural issues with various people in government, industry, and other occupations.

In 2013, the Library acquired 337 monographs (books, trade catalogs, microfilms, and maps). We added 15 manuscripts/manuscript collections, including a general store ledger book of Lewis and John Hardenburgh of Roxbury, N.Y. (1811-1814); farm ledger of John Thomas, Stamford, N.Y. (1861-1874); papers of Benjamin Walker, a woodworker and carpenter of East Springfield, N.Y., and a diary of Linn Ainsworth, a farm boy of Butternuts, Otsego County, N.Y.

For the first time ever, the Library was a net lender through Inter-Library Loan as the result of the increased number of catalog records we have placed on the national database OCLC.

2013 FENIMORE ART MUSEUM WEBSITE TRAFFICUNIQUE VISITORS TO WEBSITE: 421,005 (+35%)UNIQUE VISITORS TO MOBILE WEBSITE: 22,224 (+59%)

Our website is an extension of our museum. As such, we strive to create an online environment that matches our picturesque setting. We foster relationships with our online visitors through a user-friendly interface.

In 2013, we added a section on the landing page of the website that highlights our major exhibition and event sponsors. This new enhancement features the logos of the museum’s top sponsors and directly links to their individual websites. This prominent placement offers our sponsors additional exposure to the hundreds of thousands who visit our website annually.

Sponsors are vital to our continual growth, and we work hard to create awareness for them. If you are interested in becoming a business sponsor and having your logo on the museum’s homepage, please contact Jessica Kendrick at (607) 547-1433 or email [email protected].

THANK YOU TO OUR AMAZING VOLUNTEERS!In 2013, our wonderful volunteers contributed 11,101 hours of service. Through our successful and growing volunteer docent program, we can staff the galleries every day. Docents engage visitors and share their extensive knowledge of the exhibitions that they learn from their own studies and through biweekly trainings offered by the museum. Volunteers are invaluable to our success. They offer their time and expertise in all departments and special events.

The Research Library welcomes volunteer assistance and benefits from those volunteers who work with our book repair group, genealogy research, cataloguing, shelving and inventory to mention a few.

A special thanks to those volunteers who generously donated 100 hours or more of their time to the museums in 2013:
