To whom it may concern:
I am delighted to write to proof that Mr. Andrew Wu worked in my laboratory as a
summer intern in 2014.
During his internship, Andrew worked under the supervision of a senior member to do
research in the field of membrane protein. He was responsible for cloning, expression,
purification and characterization of bacteriorhodopsin (bR). Together with Prof. Li-Kang Chu,
we are interested in understanding the effect of lipids on bR photocycle. To control the types
and numbers of lipids, we chose to reconstitute bR in lipid nanodiscs. Over the summer, his
team was able to optimize the conditions for reconstituting bR in nanodiscs of different lipid
compositions. We extended his initial effort and obtained good preliminary results to publish
an article in Biophysical journal. In this work, we successfully demonstrated
lipid-composition dependent membrane protein function can be quantitatively measured. Prof.
Chu and I continue to collaborate on this promising project.
