The ICAADE2017 Amphibious Design Student Workshop invites students and emerging professionals from around the world to invesgate the role of amphibious construcon in a future First Naons development in Caledonia, Ontario. The selected site is located on the Haldimand Tract along the Grand River: this land originally belonged to the Six Naons but has slowly been appropriated for urban development. The area is prone to increasing seasonal flooding and is ed into a tense history between First Naons’ right to land and the various levels of Canadian government. The workshop will reveal the cultural importance of land and water to First Naons communies, explore their vernacular and modern typologies of housing, and design a sustainable, flood resistant vision of their future in Caledonia. Amphibious design refers to an alternave flood migaon strategy that allows an otherwise-ordinary structure to float on the surface of rising floodwater rather than succumb to inundaon. An amphibious foundaon retains a home’s connecon to the ground by resng firmly on the earth under usual circumstances, yet it allows a house to float as high as necessary when flooding occurs. A buoyancy system beneath the building displaces water to provide flotaon as needed, and a vercal guidance system allows the rising and falling house to return to exactly the same place upon descent. Amphibious architecture is a flood migaon strategy that works in synchrony with a flood-prone region’s natural cycles of flooding, rather than aempng to obstruct them. Amphibious design refers to an alternati ve fl ood miti gati on strategy that allows an otherwise-ordinary structure to fl oat on the surface of rising fl oodwater rather than succumb to inundati on.

An amphibious foundati on retains a home’s connecti on to the ground by resti ng fi rmly on the earth under usual circumstances, yet it allows a house to fl oat as high as necessary when fl ooding occurs. A buoyancy system beneath the building displaces water to provide fl otati on as needed, and a verti cal guidance system allows the rising and falling house to return to exactly the same place upon descent.

Amphibious architecture is a fl ood miti gati on strategy that works in synchrony with a fl ood-prone region’s natural cycles of fl ooding, rather than att empti ng to obstruct them.
