During the construction of Bagnell Dam from 1928 to 1931, old Bagnell was a boom town and grew to a population of more than 3,000 in a matter of a few months. The ser-vice road from old Bagnell to the dam con-struction site was four miles long and the hills and valleys along the way were densely populated with the tents and shacks put up by the men who came from all corners of the United States to get a job. The Great Depres-sion was on and millions of men were out of work. The dam was the only on-going large scale construction project in the United States during the Great Depression. On the service road were several general merchandise stores erected by local business-men. A tent city developed around each one. Two of the largest temporary settlements were Victor City and Damsite. The latter settlement grew to a population that rivaled old Bagnell. Violence and crime of all kinds was ram-pant in the temporary settlements. The Miller County sheriff had to employ 35 deputies to

keep law and order in the area. One of the chief problems was moonshine whiskey and bootlegging because Prohibition was also in effect. Illegal stills were raided on an almost daily basis and rum runners were constantly cooling their heels in local jails. When dam construction was complete, bootleg whiskey was also a problem on the Bagnell Dam Strip. One enterprising mak-er of white lightning even had his still on a boat in the Lake. Nevertheless, the dance halls and saloons along the Strip never

lacked for intoxicating drink. It was said that moonshine came in the back door by the pint and went out the front door in the belly of customers. The White House Hotel, shown in the photo accompanying this article (photog-rapher unknown), is where moonshine was rumored to be available. Lawrence Fry who operated the White House Hotel did not drink but his partner, Bill Hargis, did. It is said that Hargis kept his moonshine hidden in the weeds behind the White House so he’d

have plenty of it to keep his poker-playing friends well watered during their notorious late night poker games in the hotel base-ment. The 18th amendment was repealed in two stages in 1933 – first beer in the spring and then a few months later, hard liquor. Prohibition thus came to an end. The nation celebrated and so did the merchants along the Strip. “Beer A Boom to Lake Business,” said a local newspaper headline on April 15, 1933. “The return of legal beer spelled the return of better business for business houses in the lake region. The long desired bever-age was met with popular acclaim every place and many dealers stocks were quickly depleted the opening day. “Resort owners throughout the lake area stated that beer was accounting for a good percentage of their business and that if sales continued at the present level the coming summer should see the end of the depres-sion locally. . . Only one lake distributor [was] foresighted enough to envision the demand and as a result, the Ozark Lake Dis-tributing Company’s dealers of Goetz Coun-try Club were in an enviable position among their fellow dealers for a time.”

The Electromotive Division of General Motors delivered three F3 A-B-A demonstrator diesel-electric locomotives to Canadian National’s Bonaventure Station in Montreal May 27, 1948. The units were tested in a variety of operating as-signments, including the “International Limited,” between Montreal, Toronto and Chicago. This is likely Pool 5 The Lasalle Montreal-Toronto (through to Chicago) depicted here with 754 leading making a crew change at Brockville.

Here is the Rock Island Depot, in Eldon Mo. Since 1903, the train sta-tion still stands today as a ghost of the past that brought light to many peo-ples lives for the time the Rock Island Line Rumbled through Missouri. Bland to the Gasconade River was completed in 1902, Gasconade River

to Eldon in 1903, and Eldon to Had-sell in 1904. In the meantime, in late 1902, the Kansas City Rock Island Railway had been incorporated to build a rail line from Kansas City to Hadsell. Construction began and the two track laying gangs met at Hadsell in July, 1904 and the road put into

partial operation. A historic development occurred near the close of this decade, when on June 1, 1902, the Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern leased its prop-erty to the Rock Island for 999 years. This added another 1,289 miles to the system.

2 Add pumpkin and 5 cups of chicken broth; blend well. Bring to a boil and reduce heat, simmer for 10 to 15 minutes.

karst topography is paramount. These include Rockbridge Memorial State Park near Columbia; Meramec State Park near Sullivan; Onondaga Cave State Park near

Lake of the Ozarks State Park and Ha Ha Tonka State Park in south central Missouri.

Karst is a German word that means crag or stone. In North America and through-out much of the world the word is used to define a limestone area where the land-scape is characterized by the presence of caves, springs, sinkholes and disappearing streams. A significant portion of Mis-souri is karst topography where millions of people live out their lives in proximity to these geologic features. If you live in the Ozarks, you are most likely living upon karst topography. If you live within a few miles of the river in coun-ties that border the Missouri River between Booneville and St. Louis or within a few miles of the river in counties that border the Mississippi River from Quincy to Cape Girardeau, you are living upon or close to karst terrain. The ancient limestone and dolomite rock formations that constitute the prin-cipal bedrock foundation of Missouri are soluble rocks in which acidic groundwater has formed, over a period of millions of years, more than 6,300 known caves and

thousands of springs. There are tens of thousands of sink-holes in Missouri that recharge the state’s groundwater supplies.Karst landscapes are dynamic and ever changing and while caves and springs are often formed over a period of millions of years, the sinkholes that feed water to them can form overnight. In some portions of St. Louis County and the City of St. Louis developers have been known to fill sinks and built houses upon them only to have these sinkholes suddenly reform many years later and swallow property as well as buildings. The same thing happens periodically in the densely populated Springfield area. All across the Ozarks sinkholes have been known to form quickly and also plug themselves up quickly to create sinkhole ponds or lakes. In southern Boone County there are well developed sinkholes regions where county roads have been swallowed up unexpectedly. In Perry County, which has more than 600 known caves, there are sinkholes ev-erywhere, even in the front and back yards of homes. Some of the sinkhole contain

TRAVELpits that drop 80 to 100 feet vertically. While Karst terrain may sometimes be hard and risky to live with it also gives Missouri some of its most beauti- ful and

interesting geologic wonders and curiosi-ties. Missouri has been noted for its large and beautiful show caves for more than a century. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has a variety of parks where

By Randy DinwiddiePublisher Jett Comm LLCFlashback 2010 As a business owner one thing you can track throughout time is the quality of service one company provides verses the other. Unfortunately, service is not something that comes in high on the list of priorities of some companies. Quite sim-ply put, professional-minded responsible people are hard to come by in these times. A couple of weekends ago, I took at trip on the Amtrak again. Yeah, it was a fun time. The train was right on time and the view was remarkable along the River Run all the way up to St. Louis. When a company or person stands out for their accomplishments, the right thing to do to bring it up and tell your friends. Ok friends, I am telling you that our expe-rience in St. Louis was the best that I have ever had in regards to service of custom-

ers. We checked into the Hilton Inn at 400 Olive Street in downtown area. If I were to rank their service to their customers on a scale of 1 to 10. Hands down, it would be a 10. I don’t talk up the service of others much, but in a case like this I just had to. There were 4 specific occurrences at the Hotel that were handled perfectly by the staff at the Hilton. The staff was very friendly and very responsive to our needs. That’s the ticket to any company’s success story -- personal attention and profession-al service. On this business trip to begin a new paper for Deal Maker in St Louis, professional service and timely business practices were a breath of fresh air to see. There were many things for us to do within walking distance to the Hilton over the weekend. This is a trip that I am suggesting you and your spouse must take. Jump on the Amtrak and spend a couple of days in downtown Saint Louis. The Hilton Inn is in the heart of downtown and the price you pay is well worth it. A 5 star Hotel

with the best service by far that I have wit-nessed in the hotel business. While you’re up there you can walk to or hop a cab to Rams Field, Cardinals Field, Several Shops and Downtown Eatery places and Blues Hockey. There are towering buildings to explore, and the Arch and the original City Hall Museum are less then 1 mile away. The St. Louis Ferry is 1.2 miles away. You can watch the Giant Screened film about Lewis and Clark on their journey to claim the west while you wait for the Arch to become available to see St. Louis from a panoramic view. Get your reservations in now while the rates for the Hotel and the train are lower then the in-season rate.

By Lee McCain Brandon Mroz recently took the silver medal in the Men’s Figure Skating in China. Of course it’s a gratifying and exciting ac-complishment, but for Brandon, he can rest assured that the medal he earned is in fact forged of the highest quality silver. This is because he and his father come from a long line of Saint Louis jewelers who own one of the most famous and revered jewelry stores in America. Kessler Mroz Jewelry has been in busi-ness for over a century, and by all accounts they have earned those bragging rights because of their attentive customer service, a jewelry line that is unlike any other in the nation, and their ability to hand make any piece a customer can imagine. “We make jewelry for everyone, from sports stars, to film stars, to rappers, and of course the average person who wants the best in jewelry but who might be on a budget,” says owner Michael Mroz. “We can give our clients the very best service because they deal directly with us; there’s no middle man, like the corporate jewelry stores have,” he adds. “We make and cast jewelry in house, and we don’t have to charge for every little thing in the process because we do it all here.” This, according to Mroz, is why his firm can eliminate so much of the overhead that would normally be passed on to the customer.

“Plus,” he adds, “we love what we do. We really care that the client gets what he or she is looking for.” He illustrates this with a story of a desperate client who was searching for a matching ring for a wedding band that the chain stores said was discontinued. “He showed it to me and we were able to duplicate it exactly to the specifications of the original piece,” Mroz explained. “Need-less to say, that was one happy customer.” And Mroz, while he would discount it as just an average day of making a client hap-py, admitted that one of his greatest thrills in the business is being able to provide ser-vices like this that, for the most part, ended with the Johnson administration.

Living History

Mroz is also happy to keep the history of his store as true as the day it opened in 1904. The Mroz family entered the business when Ed Mroz worked with Al Kessler, the original store owner. Ed’s brother, Joseph—who is Michael’s father—was trained as an apprentice under Al’s expert tutelage. After a timeout doing his country’s bidding in WWII, Joseph returned to the Kessler business and eventually became a partner in 1946. This is when the Mroz lineage assumed full-time operation of the store and the many members of the Mroz family made their careers providing the best ser-vice and jewelry pieces available anywhere. And at a time when the entire jewelry

and precious metals retail industry was changing, the Mroz family decided the best course of action was to maintain their fine standards and ignore what the competition did. That decision has served them well. Michael Mroz’s career path to his present position at Kessler Mroz was as circuitous as the rings he sells. He first attended Missouri University as a Bio major then transferred to the Univer-sity of Kansas City’s dental school. How-ever, he decided that his true love lie in the jewelry business so he returned to the family store where he and his sons, Jordan and Devin, continue the family tradition. Son Brandon figure skates, and his fourth son, Spencer, attends high school. A Tradition of Service

Mroz speaks fondly of his store’s ability

to provide single pieces, “to over 900 cus-tom three dimensional rings and belt buck-les that we made for Bi-State (the predeces-sor to Metro Transit St. Louis), because we make our own rubber molds and of course the client can actually talk face to face with the jeweler who is making the item.” Besides the custom work, Kessler Mroz Jewelers has an excellent line of items in stock ready to buy. “We have gorgeous Black Diamond necklaces for $29.95,” Mroz says. “And this holiday season it’s all about Black Dia-monds. Folks should stop in and see what we have. This is the perfect time of year to shop for jewelry.” Kessler Mroz Jewelry is located at 777 Olive Street in St. Louis. Readers can reach Michael or his associates at (314) 621-0822 and by e-mail at [email protected].

Well folks, it’s easy to tell with this weather we’ve had the past week that Fall is quickly approaching! In my opinion, Summer went by entirely too fast. It seems most people enjoy the milder weather, though I am a warm weather kind of gal. If you’re a runner, this is probably your favorite time of year. If you’re not; you may be looking for some options for the cooler months ahead. It’s right about now when people start thinking about what types of exercise they can do indoors. Some may join a gym; or possibly just start using their existing member-ship again. There are many options at these fitness facilities – usually something for everyone, even the kids. Again, I can never stress enough how important it is for each person to find some type of physical activity they enjoy. Make it fun, mix it up!

Not only will it keep you mentally engaged but your body will thank you for changing things up from time to time. Our bodies actually adapt pretty quickly to doing the same things over again. Ever hit a plateau? Usually, this is the reason why it happens. Don’t get stuck in rut with your fitness routine! There are many group exercises classes that you can join, even if it’s just to try it out one time. You never know, that one class could end up being the funnest workout you’ve ever done! Most gyms also have indoor swimming pools, ten-

nis, volleyball and basketball courts. Since we’re on the topic of indoor fitness – I’d like to take this oppor-tunity to talk about a fun, cardio kickboxing class called Turbo Kick® that I teach. It’s a great mix of dance, boxing, and strength moves, and the music is off the hook! Come check it out on Monday evenings at 5:30pm at Work It Girl Fitness in Jefferson City. Work It Girl is the area’s only ALL female fitness studio. (sorry men!) They offer a variety of car-dio and strength classes; including

Zumba and Pole Fitness. You may visit their website for class schedule and more info at http://www.workit-girldancefitness.com/ Get a jump-start on those holiday pounds that are just waiting to at-tach themselves to you. Join a class, gym, or fitness studio today! And don’t forget that fitness and nutrition go hand-in-hand. Make healthier choices all around to a happier, slim-mer you! Cars are built by a combination of humans and robots (programmed by humans) on an assembly line. Some cars are totally built by hand, basically limited production cars, classic cars, or something special. Some others are totally built by machines. Quality checks are normally made by humans. All cars are built through an assembly line process, some on the as-sembly line; some with the parts going to the car instead of the car going to the parts. There are two distinct assembly pro-cesses involved, one for unibody design cars (the most popular type today) and another for body on frame vehicles (most all trucks, and most rear wheel drive cars). In the unibody design, the body weld shop is the first stage, in which the major body panels—the floor, the roof and the side panels—are first tack welded within a fixture. Later, after the body is released from the framing fixture, "respot" welds

are applied, likely 1500 or more, and most by robot. Reinforcement brackets and supports for components are then welded and the body becomes very stiff. Unibody cars have a lot of heavy supporting parts which require arc welding as well, usually wire fed MIG welders are used, either by robot or by manual means. Then the various 'bolt on' components, including the doors, the trunk lid and the hood are assembled, using special fixtures to maintain proper clearances for a good fit. The next major stage is that the body is selectively metal finished by disc wheel abrasives to eliminate any defects caused by dirt within dies. It takes a special skill to do this job, even to notice the potential defects which will become glaringly obvi-ous after painting.

www.amerishop.biz 21 The next stage is phosphate coating, which cleans all the die oils and any dirt and applies a texture to the metal for painting. Next is prime painting, which is almost always done by dipping in a long, deep bath unit and use of an electric current to "plate" the primer to the metal. The primer paint is baked in ovens run-ning about 200 degrees Celsius. The next stage is topcoat paint and again, most of this has been automated with either reciprocating beam sprayers or robotics. As there are usually multiple color possibilities, multiple paint pipes run to the spray booths, and back to keep the paint circulating. Multiple layers of topcoat are applied, each one having to be set up to allow a "flash off " time to elapse between coats. Thereafter the top-coat is baked. A similar process is done using "clear coat" paint, and baked again. Thus, three baking stages for the body—primer, topcoat and clearcoat. Body framing, welding and painting consume about two-thirds of the cars total time in assembly. But, the last third of the time in system, the "general assem-bly" stage, the "bolts and nuts" assembly, occupies most of the human labor.

The interior is first assembled in a logi-cal order: floor carpets, windshields and door glass, heating and air conditioning, pedals, headliners, lighting, instrument panels, steering columns. The last stage for the body interior is generally the seat installation. The final stage is the power train instal-lation. Before the body is finished, in par-allel time, the engine has been "dressed" with wiring, fuel injection system, and ac-cessory drives—generator, air conditioner, power steering pump. It is then mated to a supporting structure, called a "cradle," mated to a transmission and further work is done to install the exhaust pipes, drive shafts, front and rear hubs (or solid rear axle, in some cases), brakes, springs and shock absorbers. These are set up in a spe-cial fixture to support these components. The fixture will later raise these up under the body, and workers install the "engine cradle" and the attached components to the body, working below the body which is now supported from overhead on a moving conveyor. This final assembly stage concludes when the wiring is connected, fuel tank installed, radiator is installed with con-necting hoses, all the fluids added, the wheels are installed and the bumpers, grille and external lights assembled.

Now the car can be started and is tested using a dynanometer to check accelera-tion, transmission function and brakes. The steering alignment is later done on rollers with the engine spinning the wheels. Any assembly error corrections are done usually in stalls, similar to an auto garage, and then the car is shipped. The body on frame vehicles are built in a similar fashion, with these differences: The body is simpler, less parts to weld, as the attaching surfaces for the engine and suspension are part of the frame, not the

AUTOMOTIVEbody. The frame acts as the assembly fixture, and the engine/transmission unit is directly assembled to the frame, along with the front hubs, rear axle, suspen-sion components, chassis wiring, steer-ing and brake parts and the fuel tank. This comprises the "chassis." This work can be accomplished more easily, stand-ing above the frame instead of under the body as with unibody cars. Thereafter the body is lowered to the finished chassis, and a similar process is employed as with unibody cars.
