    Residents can have their

say about the future of arts

    and cultural services and

    facilities across Moreton

Bay region as part of a

    comprehensive planning

    strategy to be developed

    by council.Council has launched a

    cultural mapping project that

    will examine local services

    and facilities and consider

    the regions future

    cultural needs.

    Independent consultants

    have been engaged to carry

    out audits of the cultural

    organisations, practitioners,

    facilities and services

    available in the community.

    The project will research

    the level of external

    funding granted to creative

    organisations and projects

in the region. It will also

    map trends within the local

    creative industry sector.

    Community consultation

is a signicant part of the

    strategy and residents are

    encouraged to provide their

    feedback in an online survey

    available at councils website

    www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au

    Stakeholders, including

    everyone from creative

    industry professionals to

    art enthusiasts, will also

have a chance to offer their

    thoughts about the cultural

future of the region at face-

    to-face sessions to be held

    throughout the region. For

    public workshop times

    and dates go to councils

    website.

    The information gathered will

    be analysed and will assist

    with the strategic delivery of

    cultural services to the entire

    Moreton Bay region.

    The cultural mapping project

    is expected to be completed

    by September.

Council sets its strategyCouncil recently helda series of strategicworkshops across theregion to determineits key projects andpriorities for the next

    three years.

    The issues, programs and

challenges discussed at theworkshops will play a huge

    role in shaping Moreton

    Bay Regional Councils rst

    consolidated budget which

    will be adopted in June.

    The three strategic

    workshops took place across

a three week period at Woody

    Point, Woodford and North

    Pine, giving councillors the

opportunity to visit andassess the future needs of

    different communities across

    the region.

    During the past year,

    council has been dealing

    with pressing, day-to-day

    amalgamation matters

    such as maintaining

    service delivery across the

    region, addressing an array

    of stafng matters and

    achieving ongoing savings in

    councils operating costs.

    The recent workshops

allowed councillors to focuson the future and to set goals

    that will make Moreton Bay

    region an even better place

    to live.

    While specic projects and

    priorities will be ofcially

    unveiled when the budget

    is adopted in June, new

    infrastructure, economic

    development, better essential

services, and improvedservice equity and access are

all on the agenda and will

    make the next three years

    an exciting period in Moreton

    Bay Regional Councils

    brief history.

Moreton Bay Regional Council has shown it is committed

to making amalgamation work for its community by

slashing $3.9 million from operational costs during the

rst half of the 2008/09 nancial year.

One of councils goals was to identify and deliver

operational savings straight away and councillors and

staff have worked hard to drive savings and efciencies

    while eliminating duplication.

Over the next year council will continue to align the

operational processes of the organisation, setting a

sound platform for building a strong future for Moreton

    Bay Regional Council.

    Upgrade works on

    a reserve at Bunya

    are scheduled to be

    completed this month,

as part of a number ofcouncil parks projects to

    be delivered by June.

    Council will spend more

    than $430,000 before

    the nancial year ends

    on upgrading parks

    throughout the region,

    including Willow Glen

    Court Reserve at Bunya,

    Dandaloo Park at Arana

    Hills, Alf Shaw Park at

    Strathpine and Wahminda

    Park at Ferny Hills.

    New childrens play

    equipment, picnic

    settings, water bubblers

    and pathways will be

constructed as part ofthe works as well as

    signicant landscaping.

    An additional $375,000

    will be spent on

    constructing shelters, play

    equipment, lighting and

    seating at Kal-Ma-Kuta

    Park at Ningi and Crest

    Park on Bribie Island as

    well as revegetation works

    and pathways at Petersen

    Road Reserve, Morayeld.

    Superclinic

    announcedGreener pastures

Redcliffe is set to be home

to a new GP Super Clinic,

    following substantial

    council support for

    the project.

The Federal Government-funded clinic will be named

    the Moreton Bay Integrated

Care Centre and it will be

    built on the Redcliffe

    Hospital grounds.

    The new facility will

    house GPs, nurses, allied

    health professionals and

    specialists with a focus on

    acute care, chronic disease

    management and

    medical training.

    The centre will also

    incorporate an after hours

    service and a pharmacy.

    Council pledged its support

    for the project last year,

assisting with the formalproposal for the clinic.

    The $17 million project will

    help address the health

    care needs of the broader

    community while taking

    pressure off the hospitals

    emergency department.

It is also expected to be a

    training ground for young

    medical professionals.

    Construction is due for

    completion by early 2011.

    Five sports elds in

Redcliffe are to be added to

    councils innovative water

    saving irrigation system.

    The system, which currently

    serves more than 20 sports

    elds, involves moisture

    sensors and rain gauges

    that determine the watering

    needs of individual elds.

    Irrigating those grounds

    is then controlled from a

    central unit, which means

    that if it begins raining

    in one area, the sensors

    inform the central unit and

    irrigation can be altered

    accordingly.

    The scheme has reduced

    water consumption on

    Caboolture sports elds by

up to 50 per cent, and it

    will be extended to include

    Talobilla Park, Rothwell

    Park, Langdon Park, Bradley

    Park and AJ (Jock) Kelly

    Park in Redcliffe.

    Adding the Redcliffe elds

    to the system is expected

to help bring them into line

    with water restriction best

    practice compliance targets.

    Other elds will be

    considered for the irrigation

    scheme as funds become

    available.

    Emergency response and

    evacuation procedures

    have been tested in an

    exercise at Mt Nebo aimed

    at ensuring all agencies,

    including council, are

    prepared in the event of

    a bushre.

    The exercise, managed

by Queensland Fire andRescue Service (QFRS),

    involved a scenario which

    required the evacuation of

    a local school.

    Council ofcers worked

    with QFRS, Queensland

    Police, State Emergency

    Service crews and Parks

    and Wildlife rangers to

    carry out the emergencyexercise.

    The school students were

    successfully evacuated to

    a safe location and were

    entertained by Blazer the

    Bear and educational

    activities were provided

    by QFRS.

    QFRS assessed the

    exercise including the

    operation of the Incident

    Coordination Centre.

    Moreton Bay Regional

    Council participated in

    the mock bushre

    response efforts as part

    of its commitment to

    being bushre and

    disaster prepared.

    Council has also worked

    in partnership with QFRS

    to deliver free community

    information sessions on

    bushre preparedness.

    MT NEBO EMERGENCYEXERCISE

Council has purchaseda 1,827 sq m block of

    land at the corner of

    Bunton and Mein Streets,

    Scarborough.

    The former development

    site, which is just a

    short walk from popular

    Scarborough Beach, has

    been lled and will be

    temporarily transformedinto a car park.

    The site will contain 57

car spaces. A further 10on-street parking bays will

    be created around the

    sites perimeter.

    The additional car spaces

    will benet the businesses

    at Scarborough Shopping

    Village and shoppers

    visiting the area.

    This new council asset

    has the potential to return

    signicant benets to the

    community in the future.

    Council has thrown its

    support behind the victims

    of the bushres in Victoria

and the oods in far north

    Queensland, pledging

    $125,000 on behalf of the

    community to assist the

    recovery efforts.

    As the nation banded

    together to help the

    devastated Victorian

    communities rebuild,

    council showed its support

    by donating $100,000 to

    the Red Cross bushre

    disaster relief appeal.

    Council pledged a further

    $25,000 to assist the

    ooded communities of far

    north Queensland.

    Council donates $125,000

    to re and ood victims

    at www.dialbeforeyoudig.

    com.au

    Council has upgraded its

    software and integrated

    systems so that its water,

    sewerage and storm water

    pipe infrastructure across

    the region is accessible

    through the service.

    Dial-Before-You-Dig also

    details such as the depth

at which a pipe is located
