FROM THE DESK OF FR. JOHN: SAINTS ABOVE!! AND BELOW!!
There is a patron saint for almost every situation you could imagine. We know that when people lose something they turn to St. Anthony—that seems to be for everything except faith! I have heard people ask him for some of the most trivial things in life yet never think to ask him to find lost faith. Some are so familiar with him that they refer to him as “Tony”! Others when faced with a hopeless situation or a lost cause turn to St. Jude: how well I remember from my school days when facing exams I had not studied well enough to take! He must have taken pity on me since he came through a few times! St. Christopher still retains popularity with some people going on a trip, even if the church downgraded him after Vatican 11 and St. Cajetan is the intercessor for those going on a job interview --- I bet there are some who wished they knew that one before now! Some have discovered this year that there are even patron saints to turn to during pandemics: St Edmund and St. Roch, also known as St. Rocco in his native Italy. The list goes on as many people have a favorite saint they reach out to in times of need.
When you pray the “I Confess” prayer during the Penitential Rite at Mass, are you aware that you are asking for the help of “Blessed Virgin Mary and all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the Lord our God”. In the Creed we pray that we “believe in the communion of saints”. The words from the hymn FOR ALL THY SAINTS has the line, “But lo! There breaks a yet more glorious day; the saints triumphant rise in bright array; the King of glory passes on his way, Alleluia”. It is a wonderful vision that is rich in diversity and infinite variety. We have been “lavished by God the father’s love by calling us all his children”.
The feast of All Saints is an ecumenical opportunity for all churches to unite as ALL GOD”S children and for denominational divisions to be healed and reconciliation celebrated between Catholics, Anglicans, Baptists, Lutherans, Methodists, Pentecostals and the other reformed traditions, as well as remembering the ancient split between the Catholic Church of the West and the Orthodox Church of the East. Historical bitterness should be drained out of divisions between the churches so that friendships and mutual collaboration could open up a new horizon to heal old wounds. If we truly received God in His word then rancor and rivalry have no place among all God’s children who celebrate the message, ministry and mission of Jesus.
On the feast of ALL SAINTS, I won’t be surprised that as well as all the holy children, women and men from past generations who have gone before us will meet the Russian Orthodox Seraphim of Sarov who died in 1833; George Fox, the founder of the Quakers who died in 1691; Francis De Sales, who died in 1622; John Bosco, who died in 1888; Bernadette Soubirous who died in 1897; Theresa of Lisieux who died in 1879; Maria Goretti who died in 1902; Chiara Lubich who died in 2008 and the many founders of women and men’s religious orders and congregations. There is no part of heaven reserved solely for one denomination or another. There is one heaven with “many mansions”. “There is one God and Father of all, who is over all, through all and is in all”. Ephesians 4:6.
Sr. Macrina Wiederkehr in her book Seasons of the Heart speaks of the “saints at your elbow, the saints in your household and the saints you shop with at the supermarket; the strangers you meet each day”. She writes: “I used to worry about how to be faithful in praying for all these ordinary saints”. She found a way which she calls, “the Prayer of the Teacup” which is a lovely way of walking with strangers. The first fifteen minutes of each day I reserve for the saints on earth. I begin the day with a cup of tea or coffee. As the steam ascends to the heavens I walk with all my favorite strangers into the heart of God. There is a bit of the stranger in everyone—even friends. This morning prayer becomes a sacred time of yearning: a yearning for God to bless all the peoples of the earth. I name my friends to God or sometimes I don’t even name them but simply see their faces in the ascending steam. I see persons who come into my memory and I give them back to God; so many people brought together so that they all become one in the heart of God. They may be family or friends; people in my local communities; people I have worked with; church leaders and political figures; faces of people whose names I don’t know; people in stores, on the streets, at airports and in travels; the faces of those in newspapers and on the evening news. All strangers and all friends in Gods creative plan. I simply look at these strangers and friends who God has created and I yearn for their good”.
What a wonderful way to see the world of people. It enriches my way of seeing people and of praying for them.
Pray for the desire to be a saint and pray for that desire for all God’s people.
Fr. John.

Why “Fill the Heart”?
While tuition pays for teacher and staff salaries, the Sacred Heart School
Annual fund ensures essential resources for our students to thrive and be
successful as well as enable us to continue to provide campus safety
upgrades during this time.
Why support the Sacred Heart School Annual Fund?
It is more important than ever to support our fundraisers! The cancellation
of our 2020 spring jogathon fundraiser due to COVID left us with a large operating deficit to begin the 2020-2021 school
year. Help us get back on track in support of our students and staff and commit to making our first fundraising event a
success! 100% of your gifts made to the SHS Annual Fund go directly to the school’s current operating needs and are
available for corporate match programs. Our Annual Fund goal is $275,000.
How can I help?
Please join us on or before November 17th to make your SHS Annual Fund gift. Submit your donation to
www.osvonlinegiving.com/3119 or use the QR code below. You can also make a pledge to be paid a
later date during the 2020-2021 school year. Pledge payments are due June 30th, 2021.
Help us Fill the Heart for Sacred Heart! We thank you for your partnership in
supporting our mission to provide the best environment possible of faith,
