…...message from our Principal, John Maguire
Kia ora tatou ngā whānau, What outstanding evidence of self directed creativity and talent we had on show in our
two showcase evenings of Mahi Toi. Congratulations to all our students for the spirit in which you have entered Mahi Toi, from our days of celebration at school to our Showcase performances this week.
Te Wairua o ngā Mahi Toi - The Spirit of the Arts is alive and well at Garin! The wairua we live and experience at Garin builds year to year on the shoulders of those that have travelled the journey before us. Our students look up to and take inspiration from our student leaders and from our past students who return year after year to lend a hand, they are inspirational. Well done Garin students, you do not squander your talent as young people - you have your creative talent on display and bring this to the fore and share with others.
I thank our Arts Coordinator Lisa De Vries, Head of Faculty Art Elaine Rowling, the whole Arts Faculty, Arts leaders, Leon Seufert, Patience Davis, our teachers, staff and parents for their energy and participation, you have motivated, supported and inspired all students.
In my address to our parents, whānau, community and students at Mahi Toi, I chose the following quote from Plato to help emphasise the intrinsic relationship between academia and creativity in providing balance in our students learning to achieve a high quality of life.
“ I would teach the children music, physics, and philosophy, but most importantly music, for the patterns in music and in all the arts are the keys to Learning” Plato
By supporting and encouraging our students in the creative arts and areas such as sport we are opening up opportunity for growth within their lives, growth that will ultimately feed their desire to engage and succeed in all areas of learning. With 2019 course selection getting underway next term, I encourage parents to explore with their children the array of subjects on offer, listen and support them in their subject choices to ensure there is balance and opportunity for success in their learning.
I remind you all that enrolments for 2019 are now open. In the first week of term three we have our Parent Information Evening in our school library Wednesday evening 25 July and our Open Day in week two on Thursday 2 August. If you have family or friends considering secondary schooling for their children, please encourage them to contact our school office for inquiry and an application pack.
I wish you all safe and restful holidays. I thank you for your support of your students and the college in Term 2 and look forward to all that Term 3 brings.
God Bless. Ngā mihi nui John Maguire

PRAYER FOR CREATIVITY
Creativity is a gift from God who made us in his image as creative beings. It is part of what makes us human and differentiates us from the rest of crea-tion. Beauty is all around us in God‟s world, but it is we alone among all his creatures who, in collaboration with God, can make new things of beauty out of the materials he has provided.
Father we thank you for your gift of creation. We thank you for making us co-creators with you and for giving us gifts of creativity by which we enhance our world.
Brother Jesus we thank you for becoming one of us. We thank you for showing us what it is to be fully human. We ask you to help us become more for-giving and compassionate people.
Spirit of God we thank you for your many gifts. May we always speak your word. May we reflect your bright-ness in all we do and say.
Amen
#GARINSPIRIT INSTAGRAM COMPETITION On Tuesday, our Christian Service
leaders launched the #GarinSpirit Share Your Faith Competition. This competition focuses on sharing a
moment in your day where you express your Christian Faith to God and with others. There are a range of fantastic
prizes so get snapping.
NELSO-MATHIX COMPETITION This regional Maths problem solving competition was held at Nelson College on June 20. We had two year 9 and
two year 10 teams entered in the event.
While we did not finish in the top 3 in either competition, our teams competed positively and showed great team-work. Special mention goes to the team runners who must have been exhausted by the end of the event, having com-pleted many circuits of the hall!
The students competing were: Year 9: Rosa Babington, Ewan Jarman, Amy Jukes, John Lisondra, Reuben Scragg, Akitha Siyaguna, Kvido Tayerle and James Theobald.
Year 10: Ryan Chilton, Kilian Cools, Tony Huang, Alice Knoef, Hayley McBride, Luca Schulz, Brian Shin. Particular thanks to Mrs Gussette, Ms McGahern and Ms Crump for their work with the teams.

EBOOKS AND AUDIO BOOKS
The winter holidays, with their frosty morn-ings and long nights are a perfect time to enjoy a good book! We have 24/7 access to more than 1500 ebooks, and I have just signed us up for a 6 month trial of 500 au-dio books too.
So easy to access! Go to your app store and download the eplatform by Wheelers app. When you open it for the first time, you will be asked to choose your library, and obviously you will look for Garin on the list. How-ever if you are a public library user you can also access the ebooks for that library on here too. Then, you can start browsing!
When you are asked to sign in, it goes through Crystal so use your Garin username and password, just like you would for your laptop. You can search by title or author, or browse sections on the homepage like Latest Addi-tions. Some books are available in both formats, and you can reserve any title that is already on loan. All ebooks and audio books are loaned for 2 weeks.
Happy reading!
YEAR 9 TECHNOLOGY Term 2 Hard Materials Class 9H have been designing and creating colourful ukulele's. They sound good too!
STUDENT NSN CARDS
Most students in years 11, 12 and 13 have been issued with their NSN cards. Students who did not collect them are asked to do so at lunchtime on the first day of next term, Mon-day 23 July. The details on the NSN card needs to be
checked carefully. Any errors in the spelling of names or addresses listed must be notified immediately to:
We need to ensure this information is accurate as the address is where examination papers will be sent and the name is as it will appear on certificates. This needs to be the legal name of the student.
Students are encouraged to register on to NZQA learner login. This will enable them to view their results online and (if eligible) request official copies of their certificates and Record of Achievement. The instructions on login are on the reverse side of the cards.
Students have also been provided with a copy of the general examination timetable and the NZQA summary publication on NCEA including fee information. Please do make application for financial assistance if such is applicable.
The form is available at https://www.nzqa.govt.nz/assets/qualifications-and-standards/qualifications/ncea/Application-For-Financial-Assistance.pdf.
Next term students will be given detailed individual timetables for the external examina-tions. They should check that the information on the NZQA website mirrors their expectation of the standards they are attempting.
Any discrepancies please notify me immediately.
