Practica Supervision

Standard Role:I have acted as a practica supervisor in the Faculty of Education since 2001. Due to my administrative responsibilities, I am usually only assigned 2-3 interns per year. However, I have demonstrated leadership and innovation through unique internship supervision experiences.

Digital Internship 1.0 – 2006-2007: In 2006, Dr. David Friesen, Dr. Kathy Nolan, Dr. Vi Maeers and I initiated the Digital Internship Project. This was a Saskatchewan Learning (Government of Saskatchewan) funded project that supported the development of technological competencies in our interns and their cooperating teachers. As part of the project, we were able to provide each of the participating 20 interns with a laptop computer for the duration of their internship. My responsibilities for the project included a strong research component, technical and pedagogical support for many of the interns, the development and facilitation of professional development opportunities, and the creation and nurturing of an online, digital community.

Digital Internship 2.0 – 2007-2008: In 2007, I took over the leadership of the digital internship project and our team welcomed the addition of Dr. Marc Spooner. In this second year, we continued the project with 34 new interns and were able to find additional funding to provide all students with laptops, professional development and support. The projected ended in 2008 with the submission of our research report titled “Digital Internship Phase 3 – Final Report” written with Dr. Marc Spooner, Dr. Vi Maeers, and Ashley Quark.

Technology & Internship (Special Project) – 2009-2010: In 2009, Dr. Sal Badali and Dr. Kathy Nolan began a special research project to explore the use of technology in mediating communication with interns. Each of used various technologies (e.g., Skype, email, web-conferencing, video) to perform the regular duties assigned to us as faculty advisors. It is our hope to better understand how technology can be used in innovative ways to maintain or improve relationship with interns and cooperating teachers in the field.
