cinematic history throughout: Jean Douchet's little {ilm aboutAmerican girls who get taken for a ride by French playboysperfectly portrays many nuances that had never before beincapfured on film. Documentary master Jean Rouch, one of thegod{athers of the New Wave, is represented in a spectacularlyauthentic and resonant segment that's one long continuous takefor about 15 minutes siraight, following its protagonist from thebreakiast table argument with her boy{riend into the streetwhere she meets a mysterious man who wants her to go awaywith him. A wonderfully hilarious 10 minute segment"by JeanDaniel Pollet feahrres Michelline Dax playing the experiencedParisian prostitute to per{ection as she affectionately makes funo{ her inexperienced john who looks like a French version ofBuster Keaton. Rohmer's piece is about a salesman who gets intoan altercation with a drunk man on the street and tiinks hemight have accidentally killed him; it is very different fromanything else Rohmer has ever done and, needless to say, quietlvmasterful. In Chabrol's interesting and typically Hitchcockish'horror-underthe-prim-bourgeois-surface' eipose piece Chabrolhimself acts as the 'bourgeois' father of a miichievous boy whostarts putting ear-plugs in his ears to keep from hearing hisparents' constant arguments.

Capra's Mr. Deeds received fivemajor Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, BestActor (Gary Cooper with his first Oscar nomination), BestScreenplay (Robert Riskin), Best Sound Recording, and BestDirector (Frank Capra). Mr Deeds Goes to Town is Frank Capra'sclassic screwball comedv about a village innocent who inherits$20 million, only to discover it's more trouble than it's worth. The screwball in question is Longfellow Deeds (Gary Cooper), a

small-town greeting-card poet and tuba player transplanted tothe big city to administer his newly inherited wealth, where {ast-pattering, wised-up cynics, sneering society denizens, andcorrupt lawyers lord it over the ingenuous and straightforward.Deeds' idiosyncrasies are amply magnified in the tabloids byjournalist "Babe" Bennett (Jean Arthur), dating Deeds as a cover, only to discover she's the sap when she falls irresistibly for him.But the damage has been done, when Babe's column is used by apack of corrupt lawyers, Cedar, Cedar, Cedar & Budington, toprove Deeds mentally unfit. The miracle o{ this unforgettablecomedy is how it embraces dark material, calling into questionsome common assumptions about capitalism while maintaining.an approachable atmosphere o{ light comedy, and deceptivelyso. Unknown rs its resonant quality oi perversity, There's a wonderfullycontorted melodrama of motivation to it that extracts maximumeffectiveness from the irony of the tale. A very young Joan Crawfordis a circus star who hates men touching her - there's no motivationoffered for such, she just has a pathological fear of men's hands. EnterLon Chaney Sr., an armless knife-thrower who believes that thismeans hope for him, His dilemma: he's really a murderer who isjust posing at being armless as a disguise., and he despairs in theknowledge that if he ever attains his hearts desire, she rvill know hissecret and he wili lose her. Chaney gives an amazing petformancethroughout. For the part Chaney actualiy learned how to use his feetas arms and throw knives. There's an amazing opening scene wheiehe shoots Crawford's outer clothes off with a gun and then tosses

knives at her, all with his feet. In one sublime scene we see him sittingat a table, idly scratching his forehead and lighting a cigarette withhis feet. You can guarantee none of today's brg name/big ego stars

would ever go to such parnstaking lengths for a performance.

Trey Parker, 1999,81 min, R, $5) Trey Parker and Matt Stonehave done an amazing job of mixing social commentary with fartjokes and created a scathing satire on American mindlessnessthat takes on a chilling appropriateness in light of our cLrrrentwar against terror. Soafh Park, Bigger, Longer, and llncut ispossibly the first film since Kubrick's Dr. Stiangelooe to tackleimportdnt socio-political i:sues u ith such ruLhlessly furury flair.Raunchy, universally offensive, and record-breiking in itsproianity, Soutlt Park pleases the masses on shock-value humorfrom the start. Once the rnovie get's rolling and the realizationhits that the raunch is integral to plot and theme, it takes thingsto a whole new level. "Brilliant" is not too strong a word. "Japanese wunderkind (and strong contender for the GreatestLiving Film Director title) Takashi Miike, working on a

frequency transmitted between the avanlgarde and action iilmbliss, concocts deranged, \,iolent tales of cops, criminals, andkillers that bear as much resemblance to Hollywood's thrill ridesas spaghetti westerns do to the John Wayne oaters of yesteryear"

- David Fear, SF Bay Guardian

(2000, d. Takashi Miike, 102 min, & 96/94.50) City of Lost Souls(a.k.a Hazard Clfy) is another tour de force from Japan's premiervisual stylist of the moment, a turbo-charged piece of blood-drenched gangster lunacy set against the backdrop of Rio,Okinawa and Tokyo's Shinjuku district. Loosely adapted fromthe novel by Seishu Hase, Miike's latest but one of thit year (itsbox-office release in Japan at the tail end of 2000 was rapidlyfollowed up by Dead or .Alite 2) plunges straight into the actionin his own inimitable style, a practically wordless ten minutesequence in which our hero Mario (played by the Brazilian-Japanese non-actor Teah) is unleashed from jail and sets outstraight away on an airborne mission by helicopter to retrieve hisChinese moll, the beautiful Kei (Michelle Reis) from a busload ofillegal aliens on their way to being deported. Once back in Tokyothe two get caught in the crossfire between a cocaine smuggJiigChinese Triad and a sadistrc Yakuza boss and his henchman in ibrutal stand-off that will ultimately leave the streets of Shinjukusirewn with corpse5 before the films gri:ly re>olulion. There.no pretense about what this film's all about, a fast-paced actionerwith its tongue firmly planted in cheek. Miike, never one to behampered by audience expectations, bends the {ramework to hisown needs to create another skewed piece of entertainment, a

relentless flurry o{ images which alternate between thegrotesque and the absurd. Shinjuku is rendered as acosmopolitan haven for the cast of colorful multinationalreprobates that inhabit it, a garishly vibrant portrait o{ thedistrict made up of smoky Latino caf6s and sleazy cellar barsinhabited by corrupt vodka-swilling Russian business men andsultry Brazilian hookers - are we really still in Tokyo? - MidnightEye

But Mel Stuart's Wrilsfrx (1973) is for real, and itdelights in its own conceptual confusion. Rarely seen since its release

in 1973 and never released on video, Wattstax is a hidden treasureamong the concert films of the rock and soul era. It's a documentaryof an August 1972 concert at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseummeant to commemorate the 1965 Watts riots; the concert drew anoverwhelmingly A{rican-American crowd of 100,000 and turned intoa memorable black-pride event, Director Mel Stuart not only focuses

on the big names on the Coirseum's stage but also takes his camera

out into the communitl', rvatching and listening to Watts residentstalk about everyday life in the inner city. (Look for Ted Lange, laterLooe Bont's Isaac the bartenderl) The film's highlights include R&Blegend Rufus Thomas wittily corralling the crowd after it abandonsthe bleachers to dance to his "Do the Funky Chicken"; the Bar-Kaysencapsulating eve4'thing that was screamingly excessive about '70s

funk with "Son of Sha{t"; and Richard Pryor playing Greek chorus-and reminding us how beautiful he was. - Bnltimore City Paper.
