Ten years ago, my wife Karrie and I began our quest to open up the AlamoDrafthouse Cinema. Armed with the lessons we leamed from our first {ailed

theater venture in Bakersfield, Califomia, we came to Austin with a projector,200 seats, a paltry stash of money borrowed {rom a refinancing o{ Karrie's parents

home, and what appeared to many of our family and friends to be a supremelyrisky plan. For 6 months, we worked non-stop and with some help from friends, personally buiit from scratch every detail of what is now known as the originalAiamo Drafthouse Cinema at 409 Colorado.

Ten years later, we sland before a new challenge. We ate in the final year oIa ten year lease, and must decide on whether or not there is a future forthe original Alamo. In order to renew the lease, we must {ace economicreality. To conform to downtown market rates, our rent will double;

propelty taxes and insurance have tripled, and these increases show nosigns of slowing down.

:ru', -I .,

,x,\a,r*-

-b:-zFaced with sinilar challenges, many downtown businesses (Gilligan!Waterloo Brewing Company, Miguel's La Bodega to name a few) havedecided to call it quits. We, however, despite overwheiming odds, have

decided to draw a iine in the sand and continue the fight. With your he1p,

we will not be closing our doors.

As of June 1, 2006, we have formed a new non-profitcorporation, Heroes of the Alarno Foundation, for thepuiposes of supporting cutting-edge film in downtownAustin and acquiring and continuing the operationsof the Alamo Drafthouse Downtown. We provide artsand cultural entertainment to the city of Austin that isnot being provided by anyone else. I{ you appreciatethe programming that the original downtown AlamoDrafthouse Cinema provides, we ask that you becomean official patron of the theaier. We have a range of

mernber and donor packages both for individuals andcorporations. Your contribution will help the AlamoDrafthouse Cinema Downtown continue to exist andprovide the vast array of programming responsibie forEntertainment Weekly naming us "The best theater inAmerica doing it right."

To me, the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema downtown helpsdefine what Austin is today, and to let it close would

QUENTIN TARANTINO PRESENTS AROLLERDERBY DOUBLE FEATUREWITH THE LONESTAR ROLLERG]RLS SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 17 DOWNTOWNAs,you may have guessed, at the Alamo Drafthouse we are big fans of the LonestarRollergirls. we all have our favorite skaters and teams and we're ready to throw downat a moment's notice with anyone who says a bad word about our giils. Recently wefound out wete in pretty good clmpany- Quentin Tarantino is an obsessed Rollerderbyjunkie. His favorite team is the Putas del Fuego (if you need a translation, go ask yourmama). He's also a big fan of Derby movies so when he proposed this ankle-twistingdouble feature we couldn't say yes fast enough. quentin will host the event anlregale us with his one-of-a-kind movie introductions. we'll pack the house with asmany. Rollergirls as we can and best of all, proceeds benefit tlie Lonestar Rollergirls'favorite charitiesl For more information on future matches see wwwtxrd.com

Raquel Welch stars as KC Cary the "hottest thing on wheels,,in this gritty, realisticlook at the touring Rollerderby leagues of the'70s. The derby action is iast ind brutaland the lives of the athletes off the track are equally rough. When KC tries to makea fresh start with the Portland Loggers she finds she hasto fight more than just theopponents'blockers to get ahead. With ]odie Foster as KC's daughter.

9:45 UNHOLY ROLLERSDOWNTOWN Dir. Vernon Zimmerman 1972,35mm,88 min, R

You've seen Raquel do if now see Claudia Jennings do it. Jennings was the badgirl supreme who ruled the drive-ins in the'70s. In movies like GATOR BAIT andTRUCK STOP WOMEN she kicked ass with the best of them and looked great doingit. If there was a white Pam Grier, claudia was it. This takes the familiar rags to richeistory throws in a lot of sex and violence and everybody has a funky good time.

ARRESTED DEVETOPMENT SEASON 3 DVD RETEASE PARTY

WITH GEORGE-MICHAEI AND MAEBY LIVE IN PERSON!5AT, SEPT 2,7 PM, ALAMO DOWNTOWNtlvr INTTRA(TlVt EVENT WITH DVD VlDE0, 100 minIt seemed poised to save the modern sitcom single-handedly, butmainstream America didn't know what they had. SHOWTIME wasrumored to be saving the show for a while, but then those deals fellapart, too. And so we can't tell you to come to the theater to celebratethe new season ofARRESTED DEVELOPMENI because there won'tbe one. Ever. That sucks. The show, however, never did. And that'swhy we're crazy thrilled that we are able to tell you that this summerwe're bringing GEORGE MICHAEL and MAEBY to the theater live inperson! That's right, Michael Cera and Alia Shawkat are going to beon hand for one night only to walk us through hand-selected clips andgive us all the behind-the-scenes stories and secrets that they weren'ttalking about while the show was on the air.

THEWIRE: SEASON 4 PREMIERETHURSDAY, SEPT 7,7:30 PM, ALAM0 D0WNTOWN, DVD.60 MINWe haven't found a way to make it happen yet, but there's nothingwe'd like better than to have a night of pub crawling with DetectiveMcNulty, our favorite alcoholic/divorced detective on television in re-

cent years. Like everyone else on THE WIRE, his character is almost a

stereotype, but then becomes so much more and so much realer thananything else. So sure, his life is a mess, he's kind of an asshole, andhe's way too focused on trying to achieve an unwinnable task andwould never make a very loyal friend. But damn. The man knows howto put 'em back and bitch about the system. And that's just what welike. Since we can't drink with him (yet), we're thrilled to take what wecan get, especially when it's a sneak preview of THE WIRE's much-anticipated season four premiere! (Henri)

6IIMORT GIRTS sEASON PREMIERETUESDAY, SEPT 19,7 pm, ALAM0 50UTH LAMAR, HDTV,60 MIN

Okay, so we weren't really expecting much when the WB first premieredTHE GILMORE GIRLS. A young mom raising her teen daughter in a

small town and then the two of them growing up and learning aboutlife and love together? That's the kind of crap we would expect froma show that made it to broadcast with development money from theFamily Friendly Forum's script development fund. But then somethingunexpected happened - the show didn't suck at all. lt was, shockinglyenough.,, good. We found ourselves caring about who was dating who, wondering about how Rory would make it through her first dances, ifLorelai would ever find real and lasting love, and we laughed alongwith the fantastically fast-paced dialogue. Simply put, we're glad itmade it onto the CW. (Henri)

VERONICA MARS SEASON PREMIERETUESDAY, SEPT 19,8 pm AIAM0 S0UTH LAMAR, HDTV,60 MIN

It's hard to believe, but there are STILL people out there who thinkthat VERONICA MARS is just "that show with the teen chick detec-tive." Those people, those clueless, pathetic people, have no ideahow much they've been missing out on. Fortunately for them, theycan pick up the DVDS of seasons one and two and watch as RobThomas crafts a noir-styled television show that not only adds newtwists to the genre by setting it all in sunny small.town southernCalifornia but also develops the best blend of season-long arcswith episodic satisfaction that we've ever seen. Even the episodesthat we thought were going to be stand-alone mysteries kept com-ing back and adding to the final story, and we were wowed by itevery time. The season 2 finale wasn't as much of a cliffhanger as

season 1 (thankfully!), but we've still missed Veronica terribly andcan't wait to welcome her to her new home on the CW by giving hermore of the big screen treatment. (Henri)

ln 1974, Sam Peckinpah directed BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDOGARCIA, a film that is, even for Peckinpah, relentlessly bleak in its portrayalof life. Tellingly, it was one of the last films Peckinpah produced; it was alsothe fearsome director's personal favorite of the many movies he directed.Wanen Oates stars as Bennie, a piano-player who happens upon two bountyhunters who have been dispatched by a Mexican rancher to collect thehead of Alfredo Garcia. lt seems that Garcia had impregnated the ranchersdaughter, who wants his head as indisputable proof that this deviant isdead, and he won't be bothering his family again. Penniless and out of luck,Bennie does a little snooping of his own, discovers that his girlfriend knowswhere the final resting place of Garcia is, and decides to usurp the bountyhunters by severing Garcia's head and collecting the cash for himself.Peckinpah unleashes some ferocious scenes of violence as Bennie attemptsto complete his task, while Oates is magnificent as Bennie, who slides intomadness as events take a turn for the worse; he even resorts to talking toGarcia's decapitated head, and washing it in the shower.

DIRECT0R: JD RyZNAR 2005-2006 VlDr0 UNRATiDAlthough the term 'yacht rock' generally refers to the highly polished brand of softrock that emanated from Southern California during the late,70s and early ,g0s - itbecame a part of the vernacular practically overnight with the Channel 101 premiereof YACHT ROCK in June of 2005. J.D. Ryznar and Hunter Stair,s saga ietailingthe unknown mythical origins of a previously obscure genre of music struck th6audience like a lightning bolt. Ryznar devised the series after noticing severalsimilarities between bands such as Steely Dan, Toto, and The Doobie Br6thers; inparticular, their collaborations with each other and with singer-songwriter Kennylggginr - thus forming the primary cast of YACHT ROCK. Almed only with a fewfriends, some witty dialogue, and often nothing more than a couple hundred bucksper episode - most of which, Ryznar says, "goes into feeding ihe cast and crewClearly, it doesn't go into the wigs and mustaches."

Canadian musician Dave Cool (his real name) started his own independent record label andfound himself stumped when someone looked at his business card and asked, "What doesIndie mean?" Think you know the answer? Not so fast. As Cool proves in this documentary, the definition of "Indie" has evolved over the past several years. And even if you froze thismoment in time and asked everyone in the music industry to define what Indie means, atthis exact moment, you'd get different answers and lots o{ debate. Does "Indie" just mean"unsigned"? If you're an Indie artist signed to an Indie label that is owned by a major label, are you still Indie? In addition to its gripping and long-overdue debate, the film also offersan exciiing look at the bargaining chips many Indie artists don'i realize they're holding.

Open Screen Night started out with a simple idea: take thesame type of open mike night venue that coffeeshops havebeen providing for crappy poets and whiny singer-songwritersfor years except update it to give crappy filmmakers a venuefor exposure, too. ln the beginning we imagined it would be apretty painful night of video, with people bringing in old videoprojects they'd made for their high school English classes orboring old family home videos: We were wrong. We still geta few bad movies at every month's show, but over the yearswe've also had the privilege of seeing the world theatricalpremieres of several really talented and amazing filmmakers.Videos that started at Open Screen Night have gone on to Sun.dance or Atomfilms, and filmmakers that honed their craft andlearned about audience reactions to their work at OSN havebeen hired at MTV or been invited to produce and direct musicvideos for real bands (not just crappy ones their friends are in),others have had their work featured in Spike & Mike's Sick &Twisted Festival ofAnimation, and the list goes on and on andso completely by accident we created the most freeform andtruly independent film festival there ever was.

We are extremely excited to be launching a new show at the AlamoDrafthouse: SOUND SEEN, Austin's first VJ competition. ln this con-text, VJ's are not the Martha Quinns and Nina Blackwoods of the earlydays of MTV Here we are talking about the cutting edge of turntablismculture, taking the art of the DJ to an unbelievable new frontier. lf youhappened to come out to the AT&T sponsored Austin Fuzion showfeaturing DJ Cut Chemist, you have an idea of what the show is about.VJs are live video performers who manipulate, edit and tweak videolive in time to a DJ's music. We are trying to develop this scene inAustin with the launch of SOUND SEEN. We'll have a performanceby a local DJ coupled with a competition of some of the region's bestvideo artists and VJs. They will battle it out live, and the audiencevote decides who takes home the cash prize and who is stuck withthe 2nd place set of steak knives. Check back to the website (wwworiginalalamo.com). We'll have full information about rules, prizesand details on the competition. Sound Seen is sponsored by LlvidUnion/Livid lnstruments, an Austin companyJ makers of VJ hardwareand software. (Tim)

A powerfu l, mind-boggl ing docu mentary, based on the eponymous book by Alexander 5ti lle a bout the Siri lian fi4afia a nd

the heroic prose(utors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino -- who brought hundreds 0f (riminals to trial beginning

in the 1980s (in'82 there was a Mafia killing in Palermo every 3 days), until they themselves were murdered in 1992.

Their work galvanized public outrage as Mafia foot soldiers testified in (0urt that they threw bodies int0 vats of acid to

liquefy them. The violence they desrribed was embodied by the no-holds-baned photographs of death in the streets,

made by Letizia Battaglia, who appears in the film. The Mafla's pervasive hold on ltaly is do(umented here, as well as

the entren(hed (orruption ofthe nation's politicians, dating back to the end ofWorld War ll, when Mafia figures were

installed in positions ofpowerto (ountera(tthe growth ofthe ltalian C0mmunist Party.

They were so (aptivated by the mother-daughter team that they dropped the planned film and settled

touchstoneofAmeri(andocumentaryfilmmaking. Nowtheyhaverevisitedtheirhoursoffootageanda whole new film of footage taken during the legendary filmmakers'sojourn with the Beale women has

A feature documentary

taking a peek at

the lighter side of(ontemporary choices

in human remains disposition (human reefs, human fireworks,

etc.). LASTING IMAGES manages to effectively walk that fine

line between reverence and light irreverence, using humor to

challenge conventional thinking that funerals/memorials are

really just for the living. There is a trend toward one's mode ofdisposition being for the dying; revealing the essential need forpeople to create a positive lasting image for themselves, and

not just for those they leave behind. The filmmakers document

traditional burial, cremation and "human (omposting."

An American filmmaker from La Crosse, Wisconsin, Joseph Losey tried to

uphotd his fiercely independent vision within the Hollywood factory system,

biut his potiticat betiefs led to his being added to a film industry blacklist in

the early 50s. For the rest of the decade he continued making films, but not

in the i5. The tJnited Kingdom and other European countries welcomed the

maverick filmmaker. He was able to continue working until the end of his life,

primarily in Europe, but as the btacktist collapsed into history, he returned'to

the iS from time to time to make his own unique films. This series will

introduce Losey and a selection of his films to Austin audiences'

Baker simmers as a swaggering but self-loathing Welsh author covering up a

devastating secret with braggadocio and sneering machismo; Jeanne Moreau

becomes his obsession. Beautifully filmed and elegantly scored, EVA became a

showcase for Losey's arresting visual style and electrifying direction.

Known in England as THE INTIMATE STRANGER, this tightly scripted crime

thriller by blacklisted writer Howard Koch and credited to producer Alec C'

Snowden was actually directed by the blacklisted American expatriate Joseph

Losey. Richard Basehart as the imperfect man falsely accused might as well be

un uit", ego for Losey, while Mary Murphy makes for the cold-hearted bitchy

femme fatile that gets under your skin as she does the dirty work for a little man

hiding behind her skirt.
