EJMS FFA Receives 3-Star Chapter Honors EJMS FFA was honored for this award at the August Jackson County Board Meet- ing at East Jackson Elemen- tary School by CTAE Direc- tor, Mr. Todd Shultz. EJMS FFA President, Meghan Cheatham, attended and ac- cepted this honor. Two members of EJMS FFA will get to walk across the National FFA Convention stage in Louisville, KY in Oc- tober. The National Chapter Award Program is designed to award FFA chapters that actively implement the mis- sion and strategies of the organization. EJMS FFA followed a Pro- gram of Activities that the EJMS FFA officers created at the 2014-2015 chapter officer leadership retreat. The offic- ers planned activities in the areas of student, chapter, and community development. The EJMS FFA national chapter application was ranked a Gold Emblem chap- ter in the state of Georgia. This honor was only given to the top 10% of FFA chapters in Georgia (27 total). The Gold Emblem chapters were sent to the National competi- tion to be judged. At the National level, EJMS was named a 3-Star FFA Chapter — the highest level awarded to chapters! A few of our FFA mem- bers raise and show market goats for their Supervised Agriculture Experience (SAE) projects. Several of our offic- ers have shown goats for many years. Cale says, “ You have to walk your goats and take care of them everyday. When you place in a show, you make money.” Bella really enjoys work- ing with her goats because “they are friendly and a lot of fun!” Sammy puts in many hours of hard work, but “it’s all worth it in the end!” Goats are so much fun to work with and showing them is a neat project to begin. It teaches responsibility and the value of hardwork. Goat Show Facts: Goat: $100-$350 Supplies: $100-$200 Time: At least 30 min each day to walk and exercise your goat. BASIC Training is a full day of leadership development and team building at the FFA Camp in Covington, GA. Stu-dents will go through the high ropes course and the obsta-cle course.

When: September 23—Will leave around 8:00 am

BASIC Training UGA Visit and Region Rally When: September 10-11— leave EJMS at 8:00 am

What: Two days of fun! Visit UGA’s campus and Col-lege of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. Eat fast food lunch in Athens, then head to the FFA Camp in Covington, GA. Region Rally is held at the camp where students can learn about FFA opportu-nities, meet new friends, jump off the blob, play fun games, and more! This is like a mini-summer camp weekend!

Cost: $45.00 — Covers food at camp, travel, and ac-tivities. Please bring $10.00 to pay for fast food lunch on Thursday.

You must be a dues-paid FFA member to attend this trip!

Livestock Judging

Learn to evaluate cattle, hogs, sheep,

and goats and defend your placings with

oral reasons. Travel to farms to see live-

stock and go to several different compe-

titions. Team of four students. Practice

2-3 times each week until Dec.

Floriculture

Learn to identify common plants and

information about plants. If you are sci-

ence-y and interested in plants or how

they grow, this is for you! Practices

once each week until Nov.

Floral Design

Arrange flowers and create beautiful

corsages, boutonnieres, and bows.

Practice once each week through Sep-

tember.

Prepared Public Speaking

Write a speech about something in ag-

riculture that interests you. Then mem-

orize the speech and present it. Practic-

es once each week Nov.—Feb.

Creed Speaking

Memorize the 5-paragraph FFA Creed

and present it. Practices once each

week Nov. –Feb.

Wildlife

Each of the four team members

specializes in a topic: Wildlife ID,

Aquatic ID, Whitetail Deer

Mgmt., or Game Bird ID. Practic-

es once per week Dec.—Feb.

GA National Fair Display

Create a mini-booth, silk floral design

or wood-working project to be dis-

played and judged at the Georgia

National Fair in Perry, GA in Oct.
