EL PASADO 15 DE DICIEMBRE CUMPLIMOS 14 AÑOS DESDE NUESTRO VUELO INAUGURAL, UN VALENCIA-BILBAO QUEMARCÓ EL PUNTO DE INICIO DE LA AVIACIÓN REGIONAL ESPAÑOLA DESDE LA INICIATIVA DE UNA AEROLÍNEA PRIVADA

ON 15TH DECEMBER, 2008, WE CELEBRATED THE 14TH ANNIVERSARY OF OUR FIRST FLIGHT BETWEEN VALENCIA AND BILBAO,A FLIGHT THAT MARKED THE BEGINNING OF SPAIN’S REGIONAL AVIATION SECTOR THROUGH PRIVATE ENTERPRISE

ach New Year brings with it a large number of challenges. AIRNOSTRUM will, this year, be facing its challenges with renewed

enthusiasm, with its sights firmly set on providing you, and the rest of itspassengers, its very best service. I am sure many of you will agree that thebeginning of a new year is also a good time to take a look at the resultsachieved during the previous year. In this respect, we are particularly proud.For example, on 15th December, 2008, we celebrated the 14th anniversary

of our first flight between Valencia and Bilbao, a flight that marked thebeginning of Spain’s regional aviation sector through private enterprise.Over the past 14 years, we have, at AIR NOSTRUM, gradually increasedthe size of our flight network. In fact, we have, during 2008, achieved anew AIR NOSTRUM flight operations record with a total of 158,266flights. This new record is another confirmation of our position as oneof Europe’s leading airlines and constitutes an important milestone inour 14 year-old company history.AIR NOSTRUM also, during 2008, provided flight connections to a total58 national and international destinations whilst, at the same time, itconsolidated and reinforced its flight network, introducing new flightdestinations, participating in the inauguration of new airports such asthe Burgos Airport and setting up new international flight services fromairports in the Spanish provinces of Leon, Salamanca and Albacete.We have also improved the quality of our flight service with a punctualityrate of 88% and a regularity rate of 99% becoming one of Europe’smost punctual regional aviation companies. I am proud to inform youthat our efforts in this respect have been kindly rewarded by theAmsterdam Airport authorities who presented us with their 2008

European Airline Punctuality Award.Recognition has also come from other areas that include an award fromthe Palma de Mallorca Airport authorities who voted AIR NOSTRUMas Spain’s leader in environmental protection. This environmentalprotection includes a variety of programmes aimed at collecting andtreating toxic waste, reducing fuel consumption and gas emissionsand reforesting to compensate our annual paper consumption.As one of Europe’s leading regional aviation companies, we shallcontinue, during 2009, to develop and innovate our services withthe sole object of providing you, and the rest of our passengers,with nothing less than our best. En el interior, entrevalles y en las faldas de las montañas, se hallan interesantes conjuntosarquitectónicos con importantes edificios civiles y religiosos, muchos deellos calificados como Conjuntos Históricos o Rurales de Interés, en losque destacan las típicas casonas montañesas de grandes portadas yrodeadas de cuidadas fincas, junto con caseríos austeros adecuados a laforma de vida tradicional y a unas condiciones climatológicas propiasdel norte peninsular. Todos tienen en común el encanto que les rodea y elhaber llegado hasta nuestros días conservando gran parte de su esencia.

Cantabria is home of a large number of locations that havemanaged to conserve their magnificent historical and culturaltraits. The valleys and foothills of the interior of the Spanishregion of Cantabria house a whole variety of interesting civil andreligious buildings, many considered of important historicaland cultural interest. Amongst these are the typical Cantabriancountry mansions with their huge façades, surrounded bybeautiful farmland, situated next to austere farmhouses speciallybuilt for the climatic conditions of this part of the northernSpanish peninsula. These historical buildings stand out, amongstother things, for their charm and excellent state of conservation.

cuya torre defensiva y sus tejados se recortan sobre un escenario natural único yespectacular: las grandes rocas calizas de los Picos de Europa. Mogrovejo es unconjunto de casas arracimadas en torno a la gran torre defensiva, callejas de piedra,silencio y aroma a chimenea, que conforman uno de los pueblos más bellos y mejorconservados de Cantabria, declarado Conjunto Histórico Rural.

En la cara norte de la Cordillera Cantábrica y a orillas del río Argorza, se encuentraBárcena Mayor, del que se dice, es el pueblo más antiguo de Cantabria. Su caseríodemuestra su origen de pueblo dedicado a la ganadería, la ebanistería o el pastoreo.Ese valor eminentemente etnográfico le confiere un encanto único, con casasde balconadas combadas por el paso del tiempo, estructuras de piedra fluvial ymampostería, a las que nunca les falta adosadas la cuadra y el pajar. Las calles deBárcena Mayor todavía muestran utensilios que se usaron durante siglos en lastareas de sus gentes: cuévanos, albarcas, los yugos, el rastrillo, el dalle...

De camino hacia el mar está Santillana del Mar. Esta villa medieval de empedradascallejuelas está calificada como Conjunto Histórico Artístico y es, desde hacedécadas, uno de los centros culturales más importantes de Cantabria. Santillana delMar fue la capital de la Merindad de Asturias de Santillana y se estructura en torno avarios centros de funciones muy definidas. La plaza de las Arenas presidida por laColegiata; la plaza de Ramón Pelayo, que fue originalmente la plaza del Mercado,presidida por las torres del Merino y de Don Borja, así como la Casa Consistorial y elárea de los conventos de Regina Coeli y de San Ildefonso.

Edificios como la Torre de Don Borja del siglo XV, el Palacio de las Arenas, de1514, el Palacio de la Marquesa de Benamejís o las casas del Águila y la Parra,acogen instituciones de carácter cultural.

En dirección este se halla Liérganes, en el valle de Trasmiera a unos 27 kilómetrosde Santander, y asentado bajo pequeñas elevaciones conocidas como “Las Tetas deLiérganes”. Su conjunto urbano fue declarado de Interés Histórico y Artístico en1978, debido a que se encuentran en él un buen número de obras arquitectónicasclasicistas de los siglos XVII y XVIII, fruto del auge económico que reportó a lacomarca la Fábrica de Artillería, primera de las conocidas en España. En el centro delcasco urbano de Liérganes se halla el Gran Hotel Balneario, construido a mediadosdel siglo XIX, y en sus inmediaciones se ubican dos de los palacios más destacadosde Cantabria, el Palacio de Elsedo y de La Rañada.

find Mogrovejo with its fortified tower and tiled roofs standing out against thebackdrop of the large limestone rocks of the Picos de Europa. Mogrovejo,declared a Historical Rural Site, comprises a group of houses built around animpressive fortified tower, small cobbled streets that form one of the mostpicturesque and well-conserved villages in Cantabria where visitors will findpeace and quiet and the captivating smell of log fire chimney smoke.

On the northern face of the Cantabrian Mountain Range and banks of theRiver Argorza stands Barcena Mayor, considered Cantabria’s oldest village. Itsancient buildings provide evidence of its stockbreeding, cabinet making andshepherding activities. This eminently ethnographic factor provides BarcenaMayor with a unique charm of its own. Here visitors will find houses with bentbalconies, a variety of interesting stone structures and numerous stables andhaylofts. They will also find a variety of tools used by the village’s ancientinhabitants on display here. These include large straw baskets, wooden clogs,yokes, rakes and scythes amongst other things.

The medieval town of Santillana del Mar with its narrow, winding cobbledstreets can be found located close to the Cantabrian coast. Declared aHistorical Artistic Site, it has, for many decades, been considered one ofCantabria’s most important cultural centres. This beautiful town was oncecapital of ‘Merindad de Asturias de Santillana’ and houses a large variety ofimportant historical monuments. The Arenas Square, presided by its collegiatechurch; the Ramon Pelayo Square, originally known as Market Square,presided by the Merino and Don Borja towers and the Town Hall, and theconvent area of Regina Coeli and San Ildefonso.

Buildings such as the previously mentioned 15th century Don Borja Tower,the Arenas Palace dating back to 1514, the Marchioness Benamejis Palaceand the Aguila and Parra mansions today house different types of culturalinstitutions.

Towards the east stands Lierganes, situated in the Trasmiera Valley, some27 kilometres from Santander, located in the shadow of a number of smallmounds known as “Las Tetas de Lierganes”. The town was declared aHistorical Cultural Site in 1978 thanks to the fact that a number of interestingclassical style buildings dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries can befound product of the economical boom following the construction of anartillery factory, the first of its kind in Spain. Visitors will also find here,situated in the town centre, the magnificent Gran Hotel Balneario, built in themiddle of the 19th century, and two of Cantabria’s most important palaces,the Elsedo Palace and the La Rañada Palace.


En el sur de Cantabria está Aldea del Ebro que fue declarado Conjunto Histórico en2002; de esta manera se reconocía la singularidad de su arquitectura popular. Ubicado enla zona de tránsito entre la Cantabria verde y la Meseta, en sus casas y calles se plasma lafusión entre la montaña y Castilla.

Perteneciente al municipio de Valdeprado del Río, en la comarca de Campoo, en Aldeadel Ebro el tiempo se ha detenido entre menhires, huellas visigóticas, ermitas rupestresy edificios románicos. Destaca su iglesia románica de advocación a San Juan Bautista, conuna sorprendente planta en forma de ‘L’.

Finally, situated in the south of Cantabria, visitors will find Aldea del Ebro. Thisbeautiful town was declared a Historical Site in 2002 as a result of the singularityof its traditional architecture. Located in a transit area between rural Cantabria andthe Meseta (Plain of Castile), its streets and houses capture the coming togetherof the Cantabrian mountains with the Castilian plains.

Located in the municipality of Valdeprado del Rio, in the district of Campoo, timein Aldea del Ebro seems to have come to a halt. Visitors will find here a varietyof menhirs, Visigoth remains, rock hermitages and Romanesque style buildings.A visit to the impressive Romanesque style Church of San Juan Bautista with itssurprising L-shaped floor should definitely not be missed.

Maria Alvarez Ponton, a tenacious, hardworkinghorse riding champion was born in Revillade Camargo (Cantabria). She was proclaimedthe Raid World Champion in November, 2008in Malaysia where she competed in thisdemanding event with her horse Nobby, amagnificent Arabian thoroughbred.


he trajectory of this outstandinghorse riding champion, an expert and

enthusiastic horse lover, took a radicalturn some seven years ago when shedecided to accept the position of vet andhorse trainer for the Prime Minister andSovereign of Dubai. She has declared that“competing in this part of the world is verydifferent from competing elsewhere; it is abit like competing in the Formula I. Before,I used to have to pay to do what I lovedmost, now I am being paid to do it. I amvery happy here.”

You recently become the Raid WorldChampion. What does this sporting eventconsist of and what does winning theWorld Championship mean to you?This event is completely unknown in Spain.It is basically an endurance test comprisinga 160 kilometre course split into six stageswith a 30-minute rest between each stage.These rest periods are usually used tocheck the physical condition of the horses.A team of vets decides whether or not ananimal is fit to continue.Did you ever think you would come thisfar in this sport?When I began horse riding as a child Inever could have imagined something likethis. It is an impossible dream that has,little by little, become a reality.What are your short and medium termsporting objectives?

Acabas de proclamarte Campeonadel Mundo de raid. ¿En qué consisteesa modalidad deportiva y qué hasignificado para ti ese triunfo?Es un deporte completamente desconocidoen España. Se trata de carreras de resisten-cia a caballo, de 160 kilómetros recorridosen varias fases, normalmente seis, con undescanso de 30 minutos entre ellas. Estasparadas se utilizan para comprobar el buenestado del caballo y un equipo veterinariodecide si está o no en condiciones de seguir.¿Se te pasó alguna vez por la menteque llegarías tan lejos?Cuando empecé en esto de pequeña jamáspude imaginar que conseguiría algo así.Era un sueño inalcanzable que poco a pocofue haciéndose realidad.¿Qué nuevos objetivos te has mar-cado a corto y medio plazo?

At present, I consider this sport as my jobwith all objectives depending on day-to-day life. The most important thing forme is to continue improving, training thehorses to reach their full potential.How do you combine your elite sportingfacet with your profession as a vet?My profession forms part of this sport.In fact, I am a specialist in the veterinaryskills necessary for this type of horseriding competition.How does one train for this type ofcompetition?As a horse riding professional, I train ona daily basis riding for at least 8 hours aday. I also spend time swimming, runningand doing some bicycle riding.What about your horses?Their training process is a little morecomplicated to explain. Basically, they aretreated as if they were elite sportsmen witha strict training programme. At the sametime, they are given everything necessaryto cover their basic needs since the mainconcern is their wellbeing.What does it take to achieve a horseand rider binomial as successful as theone you have with Nobby?It is a long process with a lot morevariables and components than just thehorse and rider. It would not be possiblewithout an excellent team of professionalsworking hard, overcoming numerousdifficulties, to achieve this type of success.

Ahora mismo este deporte es nuestrotrabajo y los objetivos dependen del díaa día. Lo más importante es seguir mejo-rando y hacer evolucionar los caballos lomáximo que podamos.¿Cómo compaginas tu faceta dedeportista de élite con tu profesiónde veterinaria?Mi profesión forma parte del raid, ademásestoy especializada en la parte de la vete-rinaria necesaria para la realización de estamodalidad.¿En qué consiste tu entrenamiento?Al dedicarnos a esto profesionalmente,nuestro trabajo cotidiano es nuestro entre-namiento. Montamos unas 8 horas diarias.Además suelo nadar, salir a correr y hagoalgo de bicicleta.¿Y el de tus caballos?Su entrenamiento resulta algo más compli-cado de explicar. Básicamente los tratamoscomo lo que son, deportistas de élite quetrabajan bastante duro, pero los cuidamosextremadamente bien intentando cubrirtodas sus necesidades para conseguir subienestar completo.¿Cuál es el proceso para llegar alograr un binomio jinete-caballo taneficaz como el tuyo con “Nobby”?Se trata de un proceso largo del que formanparte muchas más variables y componen-tes que el caballo y el jinete, en el que inter-viene un gran grupo de gente trabajandomucho tiempo y superando numerosasdificultades hasta que al final puede alcan-zarse un logro como éste.

El raid es una modalidad unisex, “detodas las formas las amazonas lleva-mos ventaja en los mundiales ya quede doce disputados en diez hemosconseguido la victoria”. ¿A qué sedebe esta aplastante superioridadfemenina?No creo que exista esa superioridad sinoque, en el caso de los mundiales, ha sidomás una casualidad. Anualmente se reali-zan cientos de pruebas internacionales yno existe una diferencia real entre sexos.Nuestro país goza de una posiciónpredominante dentro del competitivoconcierto mundial de esta disciplina.¿No te resulta algo contradictorioteniendo en cuenta que en España elraid no es un deporte muy conocido?Tenemos la suerte de que los aficionados, apesar de ser en España un grupo pequeño,siempre han intentado ser competitivos enlas pruebas internacionales. Quizá nos falteel apoyo federativo que por méritos propiosmerece el raid frente a otras disciplinasecuestres y así poder consolidarse comouna potencia real en este deporte.¿Cómo animaríais a los niños y a losjóvenes para que comenzaran a afi-cionarse al raid?Animo a todos a probarlo y creo que si lohacen ya no podrán dejarlo. Es una espe-cialidad muy dura que conlleva muchasdecepciones y frustraciones, pero lo sen-cillo no proporciona las mismas alegrías.También invito a los padres a ayudar a sus

The Raid competition is a unisex event.“The horsewomen competing in theworld championships have a clearadvantage having won ten of the twelveworld championships”. What is thesecret behind this impressive femalesuperiority?I don’t think that horsewomen are superiorto horsemen. In the case of the Raid WorldChampionships, I would say it is just acoincidence. Hundreds of internationalcompetitions take place each year with noparticular difference between the sexes.Spain seems to stand out in this particulartype of horse riding competition. Isn’tthis somewhat contradictory, taking intoconsideration the fact that this event isvirtually unknown in Spain?We are lucky because in spite of beinga small group of riders, we are verycompetitive. For this reason, it would benice to have a little more support from theSpanish Federation, as do other equestriancompetitions, so that this horse ridingcategory can reach its full potential. What would you say to encourage youngriders?I would tell them to just try it. I am surethat once they did, they would not be ableto give it up. It is a tough sport that canproduce a certain amount of frustration,but then things that come easy are neveras exhilarating. I would also invite parentsto help their children by not putting up toomany barriers because, who knows, maybetheir child is a future world champion andeven if he or she is not, at least they wouldenjoy themselves and have something todream about.

Soy bastante idealista,creo en un mundo mejor, pero no podremosconseguirlo si los que lo tenemos todo noayudamos a los que se les ha negado hastael derecho a soñar. Los niños son el futurode ese mundo perfecto y necesitan nuestraayuda.¿Cuáles son los principales proble-mas de nuestra sociedad y qué solu-ciones propondrías?Actualmente, y por desgracia, tenemos bas-tantes problemas de los que todo el mundohabla a todas horas pero, por encima de loseconómicos, algo que realmente me preo-cupa y que creo que puede tener gravesconsecuencias en el futuro es la crecienteagresividad de los niños y las deficienciasen enseñanza y educación. Los planes deenseñanza se cambian cuando lo hace elcolor del partido que los propone utilizán-dose el fracaso escolar como arma arroja-diza, sin pensar en las consecuencias alargo plazo. Hay que enseñar contenidos,valores, educar a niños, padres y maestros,y no perder el tiempo en defender coloreso banderas que poco tienen que ver conquienes son nuestro futuro.

Are there things you still consider worthfighting for?Yes, there are thousands of things worthfighting for. People should fight to achievetheir dreams, whatever they happen to be,never giving up, no matter how impossibleeverything seems, because that is whatwill keep them alive. Apart from personalobjectives, we should all spend a little timeeach day fighting for those unable to fightfor themselves. I am a bit of an idealist,I believe in a better world, but this isimpossible if the ones who have it all donot help those who have been stripped ofthe right to dream. Children are the futureof a better world, but they need our help.What are, in your opinion, the mainproblems in our society and how couldthey be solved?Unfortunately, modern society has a lot ofproblems, especially economic problems.One of the problems which I find quiteworrying, and which I think is going tobring grave consequences in the future, isthe growing aggressiveness in childrenand the deficiencies in the educationsystem. Our education system changesevery time a new political party comesinto power, which generally uses thelarge amount of school failure to justifythese without taking into considerationthe long term consequences. Educationshould have more content, values etc., itshould be used to teach children, parentsand teachers and not to defend politicalpositions that have little or nothing to dowith the future.When was the last time you treatedyourself?I don’t remember. I am not really acapricious person and it is a long timesince I have treated myself to anything.

Itcould awake their passion for horses or, atleast, for reading. As far as recommendinga film, I could not choose just one andanyway I would not like to be responsiblefor boring anyone.As a frequent flyer with Iberia RegionalAIR NOSTRUM, what do you like bestabout our airline?I tend, due to my work and lifestyle,to travel quite a lot around the world.I usually use AIR NOSTRUM to visit myfamily in Cantabria and would, without adoubt, underline its punctuality. iajar al medievo es tan fácil como remontar la Plaza Mayor de Cáceres. Al cruzar elfabuloso Arco de la Estrella, junto a la imponente torre del Bujaco, el visitante se adentra

en el Renacimiento español como si de una película se tratara. Un escenario impecablemente esculpido hace más de 500 años, donde nos sorpren-

derán cada uno de sus rincones; el perfil de una gárgola que corona un vetusto torreón, losdiferentes estilos de sus balcones adornados con los nidos de las cigüeñas o un escudoque capitanea una sobria fachada. Este conjunto ha hecho de Cáceres ciudad Patrimoniode la Humanidad.

Pero no sólo nobles y clérigos se asentaron en Cáceres. Por sus sinuosas callejuelasempedradas descubrimos el paso de judíos, árabes, romanos y hasta del hombre paleolítico.

El centro monumental está circunscrito por restos de la muralla árabe, pero su mayorlegado es el aljibe. Aún dentro de este cogollo patrimonial descubrimos otras callejas máshumildes, evocación de la antigua judería. Siguiendo este rumbo penetramos en la calleCaleros, puerta de entrada a una de las joyas más escondidas de la ciudad, la Ribera delMarco.

The ancient city was not, however, only populated by nobility and clergymen.Its narrow cobbled streets offer evidence of Jewish, Moorish, Roman and evenPalaeolithic inhabitants.

The historical centre is, for example, bounded by the remains of the city’sancient Moorish city walls. Its most famous Moorish monument is, however, the‘aljibe’ (water well). In the centre of this monumental paradise, visitors will find a

El Marco o la Madre, como la conocen los lugareños, es un riachuelo que discurre a lasombra del baluarte monumental y que ha sido el motor de la vida cacereña moderna.Se trata de un paraje natural lleno de historia, pues de sus aguas ya bebió el hombrepaleolítico del que se conservan yacimientos en las cavernas cacereñas. La Cueva deMaltravieso es una de las mayores muestras del arte rupestre y guarda pinturas de más decien mil años de antigüedad. Un tesoro milenario al que el visitante puede acercarseandando ya que, actualmente, forma parte del núcleo urbano.

Los árabes también aprovecharon la Ribera y además del aljibe legaron su sistema deriego que permitió el desarrollo de huertas que abastecieron a Cáceres durante siglos yque todavía aún se cultivan dentro de la propia ciudad.

Remontando la Ribera, ya en el paraje del Calerizo, descubrimos otro de los conjuntospatrimoniales de la ciudad, testimonio de la única revolución industrial de Extremadura. Esel conjunto minero de Aldea Moret donde entre el 1860 y el 1960 se explotaron minas defosfatos. Aún se conserva la colonia obrera, inspirada en el modelo británico utópicode ciudad jardín y que aquí fue absolutamente vanguardista en la época.

Desde la Prehistoria hasta la contemporaneidad, Cáceres ha sido testimonio de lasnumerosas etnias que se han asentado en la península y conjuga esta herencia con eldinamismo y la modernidad de la capital actual. Se trata de una ciudad que apuesta por lacultura. Son incontables los festivales, certámenes y eventos que se celebran. Los másconocidos son el Play Cáceres o el WOMAD, que aglutinan decibelios de música conartesanía y otras actividades lúdicas. Éstos combinan a la perfección con las fiestas localesde Cáceres que atraen cada año a más turistas. Y no hay fiesta que se precie sin un buenbocado. La gastronomía local es famosa por la Torta del Casar, las migas, los jamones ylos dulces.

La época de mayor esplendor cacereño fue el reinado deCarlos V; falleció en el Monasterio de Yuste, en la comarca extremeña de La Vera, ycon su imperio ya concebía la idea de Europa. Además, de nuestras tierras salieronlos primeros conquistadores de América. El intercambio cultural que se generó, todoslos hallazgos que trajeron y la influencia que les transmitimos nos convierte en puenteentre Europa e Iberoamérica, una seña de identidad que no tienen otras ciudades.¿Que significaría ganar esta mención?Aparecer en los circuitos turísticos europeos y que se nos reconociese como lo quesomos: una ciudad Patrimonio de la Humanidad, con recursos naturales importantí-simos, con gentes hospitalarias y acogedoras, con una intensa actividad cultural y unarica gastronomía, en definitiva, una ciudad amable donde se vive bien. ¿Qué futuro le augura a Cáceres? Cáceres tiene el progreso económico y turístico asegurado. Estamos en el centro geo-gráfico entre Madrid y Lisboa y entre el norte y sur de España. La autovía hasta Cáceresfinalizará en breve y en 2011 llegará el AVE y el aeropuerto. Para cuando ganemos lacapitalidad nos visitarán muchas personas y los extremeños también viajarán conmucha más facilidad.

The ‘Marco’ or ‘Madre’, as it is known by the locals, is a watercourse that flowsalongside the city’s monumental bastion, a watercourse that also plays an importantrole in the city’s present everyday life. A nature area marked by history whereit would seem the city’s ancient Palaeolithic inhabitants drank judging by the

archaeological remains found in nearby caves. Worth mentioning is the MaltraviesoCave housing a large collection of cave paintings, some over a hundred thousandyears old. Visitors are invited to visit this millennial treasure which has sincebecome a part of the urban nucleus.

The Moors also used this area for storing water and for constructing its famousirrigation system used to irrigate the city’s market gardens, built to provide thecity with fresh food produce. It is still possible to see a wide variety of marketgardens within the boundaries of the city.

In the nearby area of Calerizo, visitors will come across another of the city’shistorical areas. In this case, we are referring to the Aldea Moret Mining Villagewhich, from 1860 to 1960, was responsible for mining phosphates here. Thismining town, built on the utopian British urban model known as the ‘Garden City’,was considered a vanguard project at the time of its construction.

From Prehistoric times to the present day, Caceres has been inhabited bynumerous civilisations which have provided this famous Spanish city with adynamic, cultural atmosphere. Caceres continues to focus its attention on cultureand plays host to a number of festivals, contests and other cultural events. Wortha special mention are the Play Caceres and Womad festivals combining musicwith arts and crafts and other recreational activities. These important musicfestivals blend in perfectly with Caceres’ local festivities which have begun toattract more and more annual visitors. Its extraordinary gastronomy is also wortha special mention with specialities that include its delicious Torta del Casar softcheese, ‘migas’ (dried breadcrumbs), famous Iberian dried ham and mouth-watering confectionary.

❑ Visitors to CACERES will not only find culture in the local museums, but also in andaround its streets where they will come upon people enjoying a wide variety of traditions.It is not unsurprising, therefore, to learn that Caceres is a likely candidate for the 2016Cultural Capital Award, a well earned candidacy according to the Mayoress of Caceresand President of the Caceres 2016 Consortium, Ms. Carmen Heras.What makes Caceres a worthy candidate for the 2016 European Cultural Capital Award?Caceres not only has an amazing patrimony comprising a number of unique treasures,but also has a strong link with Europe. Its main period of splendour took place durinthe reign of Carlos V, whose empire had already conceived the idea of Europe, whodied here in the famous Monastery of Yuste, situated in the region of La Vera. The firstconquistadors of America set off from here. The wealth of cultural exchange this historicalevent produced, the discoveries it brought with it and our influence turned us into a bridgebetween Europe and Latin America, a uniquely distinguishing trait.What would it mean to Caceres to win this award?It would mean that we would be included on the European cultural tourist circuit andrecognised for what we are: a World Heritage City offering a number of important natureresources, a city with a warm, friendly population, an intense cultural activity and a richgastronomy; a friendly city with an outstanding quality of life.What kind of future do you foresee for Caceres?Caceres has an excellent economic future. Geographically, we are located between Madridand Lisbon and the north and south of Spain. The Caceres motorway will be finishedshortly and the high speed AVE train and Caceres Airport should be in service by 2011.When we become 2016 European Cultural Capital, both local inhabitants and visitors willbe able to travel with ease.

Extremadura is going through a process of important structural change in itseconomy that affect, above all, its chains of production. We are referring to its inclusionin the international export market under the flag of efficient competitiveness. Thisprocess also includes its inclusion in a number of new home markets. Extremadurahas, over the past years, become an area of important investment opportunities withsignificant global growth potential.

Having set its sights firmly on the future, it is building a solid base founded on thedynamics and application of its highly imaginative development activities. In fact, ithas become one of Spain’s most active regions as far as the creation and acquisitionof companies is concerned. Pioneering projects such as “Empresas 24h” (24hrCompanies) take advantage of the best business opportunities by providing a rapidresponse. The key word here is innovation.

An example of this is the ‘cluster’ formula, a company management system thatis providing numerous benefits in the region. The success of this type of businessinitiative lies in the development and adopting of new business formulas. Clustersreinvent the traditional concept of competition: in this case a group of competitorsunite in order to improve their competitiveness. This allows competitors to takeadvantage of market opportunities and resolve conflictive situations by collaboratingand encouraging competition in order to improve the market sector. Extremadura lidera un proceso que implica importantes transformaciones estructuralesen el sistema económico, y en especial en el aparato productivo. Extremadura mira al futuro para construir su presente sobre una base sólida, funda-mentada en el dinamismo y en la aplicación de la imaginación a su desarrollo. Se haconvertido en una de las autonomías más activas de España en relación a la posibilidad decrear y adquirir empresas. Proyectos pioneros como “Empresas 24h” permiten respondercon agilidad y aprovechar las oportunidades de negocio con más potencial. En Extremadurala palabra clave es: innovación.

Una muestra de ello son los “clusters”, una forma de organización empresarial quedemuestra sus beneficios en la región. El éxito de esta iniciativa radica en evolucionar yadoptar nuevas fórmulas. Los “clusters” reinventan el concepto tradicional de competencia:varias empresas, competidoras entre sí, se agrupan para mejorar su competitividad interac-tuando en conjunto en torno a un mercado. El “cluster” permite a sus integrantes trabajar alunísono sobre problemas y oportunidades comunes, buscando la cooperación y fomentandola competencia para potenciar el sector. En Extremadura operan nueve “cluster” que abarcanla mayoría de actividades: desde Materiales de Construcción hasta Nuevas Tecnologías.

Los objetivos fijados por la Unión Europea (UE) establecían que, para el 2020, lasfuentes de energía renovable deberían constituir el 20% del consumo total de energíaprimaria. En sintonía con estas recomendaciones, Extremadura ha creado el “cluster” de laEnergía, último en crearse, para posicionarse de manera específica en el ámbito delas energías renovables. Además del importante desarrollo de la energía termosolar con laconstrucción de nuevas plantas, actualmente la región tiene en marcha instalacionesfotovoltaicas que están a punto de superar los 300 megavatios, lo que supone cerca del20-25% del total nacional.

MERCADOS INTERNACIONALESExtremadura ha aumentado sus exportaciones en 2008 un 16%, y las estimaciones de

crecimiento hasta final de año prevén que se superen, por segundo año consecutivo, losmil millones de euros en volumen total de exportaciones, según los datos de las cámarasde Comercio.

Argelia, Canadá, Marruecos y Chile son los mercados en los que aumenta la presenciade productos extremeños, mientras que las verduras y frutas extremeñas deleitan lospaladares de toda Europa y llegan hasta oriente, donde Japón se suma con entusiasmo a ladegustación del jamón ibérico y China empieza a interesarse por esta delicatessen.

Esos productos no son más que la tarjeta de presentación de la región, que ya haempezado a exportar Moda Extremadura a través de su propia pasarela y concurso dediseño, despertando el interés de potencias como EE.UU., China y Rusia. Extremadura abrecamino en los mercados internacionales como sinónimo de calidad e innovación.

For example, objectives set down by the European Union (EU) establish thatrenewable energies should, by 2020, provide 20% of energy consumed. Extremadurahas, in collaboration with this EU proposal, created an energy sector cluster, its latestcluster enterprise, with the object of improving its position in the renewable energysector. Extremadura already has an important number of photovoltaic plants, withplans for further development, on the verge of producing some 300 megawatts,20-25% of the total national renewable energy production.

INTERNATIONAL MARKETSDuring 2008, Extremadura increased its total export figure by 16%. This year’s

forecasts foresee a second consecutive annual increase. According to the Chamber ofCommerce, Extremadura will achieve an export figure of over one thousand million Euros.

Algeria, Canada, Morocco and Chile are some of the markets in which Extremaduraexpects to increase its exportations. In the meantime, its excellent fruit and vegetableproduce and other delicious food products are already being exported to a large partof Europe and even Asia where the Japanese have become avid consumers ofExtremadura’s famous dried Iberian ham. It is also interesting to know that China isbecoming increasingly interested in what is considered one of its star food products.

The above-mentioned products are just a small example of export goods sinceExtremadura has recently begun to export its Moda Extremadura (ExtremaduraFashion) project, hosting its own catwalk and fashion design contest and arousingthe interest of important markets such as the North American, Chinese and Russianmarkets. Extremadura is making its way into a number of international markets whereit is becoming a synonym of quality and innovation.

La Comunidad Autónoma de Aragón, situada en el noreste de España, cuenta contres provincias (Huesca, Zaragoza y Teruel), un total de 730 municipios y 1.200.000habitantes.

as tres grandes zonas naturales que la integran, los Pirineos, al norte, la depresióndel Ebro, en el centro, y el Sistema Ibérico, al sur, dan origen a climas y paisajes muy

distintos, configurando una naturaleza privilegiada y de arrolladora belleza. Al mismotiempo, Aragón cuenta con un valioso patrimonio milenario de gran valor artístico. Innu-merables son las rutas recomendables en esta comunidad, cuyos pueblos atesoran losmejores ejemplos de arquitectura y cultura popular. No obstante, citaremos algunas quemuestran la enorme variedad de sus paisajes.

En los Pirineos, y flanqueados por altas cumbres que superan muchas veces los 3.000metros, encontramos largos y profundos valles: Ansó, Hecho, Aragón, Tena y Benasque.Mención aparte merecen el Parque Natural del Posets-Maladeta y, especialmente, el ParqueNacional de Ordesa y Monte Perdido, declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO.

Auténticos paraísos naturales para la flora y la fauna pirenaica. Tupidos bosques depinos, hayas y abetos, alfombras de flores que cubren con su inmensa gama de coloreslas amplias praderas, profundos y escarpados cañones, paradisíacas cascadas de aguascristalinas y solitarias cumbres que albergan ibones y glaciares perpetuos.

Todas estas características hacen del Pirineo un paraíso para los amantes de la natu-raleza. Desde la espectacularidad de las ascensiones a las altas cimas, pasando por elparsimonioso paseo a caballo a través de sus densos bosques o el silencioso caminar delsenderista, al vértigo de las aguas bravas o el barranquismo, son muchas las posibilidadesde ocio que ofrecen estas majestuosas montañas.

Sin embargo, también en los Pirineos encontramos joyas románicas que han resistidoel paso de los siglos, como la Catedral de Jaca, el Monasterio viejo de San Juan deLa Peña, el conjunto de iglesias del Serrablo, la Catedral de Roda de Isábena o el cascomedieval de Aínsa.

En la parte más occidental del Prepirineo destaca con nombre propio el Territorio Museode las Cinco Villas, que alberga auténticas joyas del románico, especialmente en Sos delRey Católico y Uncastillo.

En dirección este, y a 20 km. al norte de la ciudad de Huesca, se alza, construido sobreroca y al borde de un espolón, el magnífico castillo de Loarre, el mejor conservado deAragón, por lo que ha sido en varias ocasiones elegido por prestigiosos directores comoescenario cinematográfico.

El Parque Natural de la Sierra y Cañones de Guara, en el centro del Prepirineo oscense,es el paraíso para los aficionados al rafting y al barranquismo: estrechos barrancos, recón-ditas surgencias de agua, construcciones megalíticas, abrigos rupestres y pueblos medie-vales, entre los que sobresale Alquézar, completan la oferta turística de una de las zonasmás visitadas de Aragón.

Ya en la provincia de Zaragoza, y en la parte más occidental de la misma, encontramosla bellísima Tarazona, ciudad mudéjar que atesora importantes monumentos de enorme

Aragon also has an important historical patrimony of great artistic value. A numberof recommended tourist routes full of picturesque villages lay witness to the magnificentlocal architecture and ancient customs to be found here.

Towards the north, for example, visitors will find, as mentioned previously, thePyrenees where impressive mountain peaks with heights of up to 3,000 meters giveway to a number of long, deep valleys such as the Anso, Hecho, Aragon, Tena andBenasque valleys. Here visitors will also find the Posets-Maladeta Nature Park and thespectacular Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park, declared a World Heritage Site bythe UNESCO.

A natural paradise full of Pyrenean flora and fauna where thick pine, beech and firforests, pastureland and meadows full of colourful flowers, deep and rocky ravines,cascades of crystal clear water and solitary mountain peaks with an important numberof lakes and ancient glaciers are just waiting to be discovered.

A true delight for nature lovers who will find here, amongst other things, spectacularrock climbing activities, relaxing horse riding excursions that will take them throughlush forests, a wide selection of excellent trekking routes and other types of adventuresports that include ‘canyoning’.

As far as the regional cultural activities are concerned, we would mention thatthis Pyrenean area is also home of a large number of well-conserved Romanesquemonuments. Worth a special mention are the magnificent Cathedral of Jaca, the OldMonastery of San Juan de La Peña, the Serrablo churches, the Cathedral of Roda deIsabena and the Medieval Town of Ainsa.

Also worth mentioning, towards the far west, are the Territorio Museo de las CincoVillas, home of a wide range of authentic Romanesque treasures found in areas suchas Sos del Rey Catolico and Uncastillo amongst others.

Visitors travelling eastwards will find, some 20 kilometres north of the city of Huesca,the extraordinary Castle of Loarre, built on the edge of a rocky spur and considered thebest conserved castle in Aragon. On an anecdotic note, this extraordinary castle hasbeen used as a shooting location by a number of famous film directors.

Meanwhile, the Sierra y Cañones de Guara Nature Park, situated in the centre of whatis known as the ‘Prepirineo oscense’, offers excellent resources for rafting and‘canyoning’ enthusiasts: narrow ravines, hidden water sources, megalithic constructions,sheltered caves and medieval villages such as Alquezar complete the tourist offer ofwhat is considered one of Aragon’s most popular areas.

interés. Muy cerca se encuentra el monasterio cisterciense de Veruela, a los pies de laimpresionante mole del Moncayo, de 2.316 metros, que preside un Parque Natural deespesos bosques y variada flora.

Al sudoeste de Zaragoza, y catalogado como oasis de naturaleza y arte, hallamos elfamoso Monasterio de Piedra, una de las joyas turísticas de Aragón. Allí el rumor de susmúltiples y caprichosas cascadas llena el silencio de su monasterio cisterciense. El vecinoy orgulloso Calatayud, destaca por sus colegiatas e iglesias de gran valor artístico. Unaúltima etapa de esta ruta nos llevaría a Daroca, ciudad museo rodeada de islámicas ylegendarias murallas.

Al este de la ciudad de Zaragoza y en la ribera del Ebro, encontramos el Monasterio deRueda, perteneciente a la Orden del Císter y reconvertido en coqueta hospedería, así comoCaspe, con su magnífica colegiata gótica, y Alcañiz, ya en la provincia de Teruel, ciudad degran valor monumental presidida por su imponente castillo.

La provincia de Teruel es pródiga en sierras y estribaciones con abundante vegetación,nacimientos de ríos y cascadas jalonadas por pueblos que conservan intacto su sabormedieval. Nombraremos entre otras las del Matarraña, Maestrazgo, Gúdar y Javalambre.Entre sus localidades con encanto brillan con luz propia Valderrobres, Calaceite, Beceite,Cretas, Mirambel, La Iglesuela del Cid, Cantavieja, Mosqueruela, Rubielos de Mora y Morade Rubielos.

Al oeste de la capital turolense encontramos Albarracín, conjunto monumental e históricode primer orden, realización genuina de la Edad Media y una auténtica joya que ningúnvisitante debe perderse.

El paseo por las tres capitales aragonesas nos lleva en primer lugar a Huesca que, a lasombra de su catedral gótica, bien merece una visita. Zaragoza, flamante sede de la exitosaExpo 2008, es una ciudad moderna y acogedora que alberga restos de su milenario pasado:el Palacio de la Aljafería, La Seo, la Basílica del Pilar, restos arqueológicos romanos, etc.

To the far west of the province of Zaragoza stands Tarazona, a Mudejar style townthat houses a number of important monuments of great historical interest. Close by,the beautiful Cistercian Monastery of Veruela can be found located on the folds of theimpressive 2,316 meter high Moncayo, home of an outstanding nature reserve full ofthick forests and a wide variety of other types of vegetation.

For those travelling southwest of Zaragoza, an area catalogued as an oasis of natureand art, we would draw their attention to the famous Monastery of Piedra where thesound of capricious waterfalls break the silence of what is considered one of Aragon’smost famous tourist attractions. In the neighbouring town of Calatayud visitors will finda number of collegiate and parish churches of great artistic value. The final stage of thistourist route will bring visitors to Daroca, famous for its legendary Islamic city walls.

Other historical monuments include the Cistercian Monastery of Rueda, situatedeast of the city of Zaragoza, on the banks of the River Ebro, today home of apicturesque hotel. We would also mention Caspe with its magnificent Gothic stylecollegiate church and Alcañiz. Situated in the neighbouring province of Teruel andpresided by an impressive castle, Alcañiz is considered a town of outstandingmonumental value.

Visitors to Teruel will find here a wide variety of sierras and foothills, abundantvegetation, springs and waterfalls and picturesque towns and villages that conservetheir medieval atmosphere. Worth mentioning are Matarraña, Maestrazgo, Gudar andJavalambre. Other localities include Valderrobres, Calaceite, Beceite, Cretas, Mirambel,La Iglesuela del Cid, Cantavieja, Mosqueruela, Rubielos de Mora and Mora de Rubielos.

To the west of the capital of Teruel stands Albarracin, an outstanding historical andmonumental medieval town, an authentic historical gem well worth a visit.

Aragon’s three provincial capitals are Huesca with its marvellous Gothic stylecathedral; Zaragoza, the successful host of the 2008 World Exhibition (Expo 2008), a

Teruel, la ciudad de los Amantes luce su conjunto mudéjar Patrimonio de la Humanidad porla UNESCO en torres, iglesias y catedral.

Sin embargo, el mudéjar en Aragón merece punto y aparte. Declarado por la UNESCOPatrimonio de la Humanidad, el valor de sus 157 monumentos supera lo meramenteartístico para convertirse en símbolo y paradigma de la convivencia de distintas culturas enun lugar geográfico concreto y en un momento histórico de tolerancia cultural.

Es éste el estilo artístico de aquellos musulmanes que, tras la conquista cristiana, conti-nuaron conservando sus usos y costumbres y que, al fusionar los estilos europeos del XIV alXVI con su tradición islámica, crearon obras artísticas de valor universal. Encontramosabundantes monumentos mudéjares en todo Aragón pero sin duda alguna destacamos elconjunto mudéjar de Teruel, la Seo y el Palacio de la Aljafería, en Zaragoza, Tarazona, Daroca,Calatayud, Tobed, Torralba de Ribota, Cervera de la Cañada, Montalbán, Borja y Tauste.

Nuevos Audi A6,una gran familia

As mentioned previously, a number of significant design features have beenincluded on the new models. These include an updated single frame grille, newbumpers, new air vents and new fog lamps. The rear lamps have also been updatedwith LED technology and include optional LED daytime running lights with horizontalstrips formed out of 6 LEDs each. The optional Audi adaptive light includes a high-beam assistant that automatically switches the high beam on and off.

The new A6 model also includes an aluminium-coloured moulding traversingthe sides emphasising its dynamic contour, LED technology in the exterior rear-view mirror frame and impacting light alloy wheels; little change, however, in thesaloon’s generous proportions.

The gentle lip on the trunk (or on the edge of the roof in the case of the Avant),integrated chrome strip on the bumper, broad diffuser and straight exhaust pipesare part of the revamped rear end. The new bipartite rear lights with LED technologystand out for their new design: narrow and wide, they taper inwards. The luminousLED headlights provide optimum illumination.

In the interior, the rear seats are extremely comfortable and the L-shapedheadrests improve the driver’s rear view visibility. As an option, Audi offersindividual Valcona leather seating. A package of elaborate features makes sure thenoise level is cut by almost half, particularly within critical frequency ranges. Theinstrument panel uses new higher-resolution graphics and a new frame betteraccentuates the display. Tastefully-appointed chrome trim, even on the spokes ofthe steering wheel, call attention to its overall elegance and inlays are available ineither an aluminium look or fine woods. As is expected of an Audi, the interiordesigners have made sure all the colours and materials match.

For the more dynamic drivers, Audi is now offering an S-line sports model. Thepackage includes enhanced performance features such as 18, 19 and 20-inchwheels. One of the major strengths of the new A6, however, lies in its broadselection of engines. These include five petrol and four diesel engines using directfuel injection and cutting edge FSI, TFSI and TDI technologies in a choice of four,six or eight cylinders. As mentioned previously, new measures have beenintroduced to optimize engines and minimize fuel consumption, lowered by about15%. The energy literally flows to the front wheels, or all four wheels for thatmatter whether stick shift, convenient tiptronic or high-efficiency multitronic.

In summary, an outstanding saloon with a large number of improved featuresif we compare it to the previous model and a price range that has lowered itsprices, especially if we take into account the new standard equipment beingoffered, by an average 4.4%.

Los retoques en el diseño son bastante significativos. La parrilla “Singleframe”, losparachoques, las entradas de aire y los faros antiniebla son completamente nuevos. Losfaros integran luces diurnas, que en la técnica xenón plus opcional conforman una bandahorizontal de diodos luminosos. El sistema de iluminación opcional “adaptive light”incluye ahora también una luz de giro. En combinación con xenón plus, Audi ofrece unafunción adicional que conecta y desconecta automáticamente las luces de carretera.

La perspectiva lateral del A6 muestra delicadas molduras en la zona inferior de loslaterales, intermitentes en tecnología LED integrados en las carcasas de los retrovisoresexteriores e impactantes llantas de aleación ligera. Las generosas dimensiones perma-necen prácticamente inalteradas.

La imagen de la saga se ve realzada por un discreto perfil en el portón del maletero (o enel borde del techo en el caso del Avant), una moldura cromada en el parachoques, unancho difusor y los tubos de escape rectos. Los pilotos traseros de la berlina destacan porsu nuevo diseño: si bien mantienen su forma plana y ancha, terminando en punta en suparte interior. Los diodos luminosos de los faros proporcionan una óptima iluminación.

En el interior destacan los asientos traseros, con un acolchado más blando, que ofrecenahora un mayor confort. Sus reposacabezas en forma de L pueden sumergirse hasta unaposición muy baja y su diseño aporta un toque de modernidad. Como opción Audi ofrecedos asientos individuales tapizados en cuero. El excelente nivel de ruido en el interiorvuelve a reducirse una vez más de forma significativa. El cuadro de instrumentos presumede un gráfico más refinado y el monitor de a bordo de un marco de nuevo diseño. Un grannúmero de discretas abrazaderas de aluminio y cromo, también en el volante, resaltansu elegancia. Las nuevas inserciones se han realizado en aluminio radial, aunque opcio-nalmente puede optarse por el aluminio trigon o la madera natural de poros abiertos. Lassuperficies están disponibles en dos nuevos colores, beige lino y gris luz.

Para los conductores que busquen un comportamiento más dinámico, Audi ha dispuestoun paquete deportivo S-line que aumenta el rendimiento del Audi A6 gracias a sus llantas de18, 19 ó 20 pulgadas y a un tren de rodaje deportivo que rebaja 30 mm. la carrocería delvehículo.

Entre los principales valores del triunfador A6 destaca su amplia oferta de motores.Cinco mecánicas de gasolina y cuatro diesel con cuatro, seis y ocho cilindros que, dotadasde inyección directa, sacan el máximo partido a las ultramodernas tecnologías FSI, TFSI yTDI. Gracias a las intensivas medidas de optimización, todos los motores han ganado enpotencia y eficiencia; en toda la gama de modelos, los valores de consumo se han reducidoalrededor de un 15%. Las fuerzas del motor son trasladadas a las ruedas delanteras o a lascuatro ruedas a través de una caja de cambios manual, del confortable tiptronic o del multi-tronic de variación continua.

En resumen, una gran familia muy mejorada con respecto a su antecesor y con unosprecios, que contando con el nuevo equipamiento de serie que ofrecen, bajan de media un4,4 por ciento.

Nuevo Toyota Avensis

New Toyota Avensis

Toyota ha puesto en el mercado la tercera generación de su berlina Avensis quesiempre ha gozado de una fama merecida por su calidad. En principio, el nuevoAvensis se comercializará en España con dos diferentes carrocerías, una de cuatropuertas y otra más familiar, denominada Cross Sport, a las que se suman tres diferentesniveles de acabados (Active, Advance y Executive) y cuatro propulsores, dos nuevos degasolina y los dos diesel ya conocidos, pero con mejoras.

Toyota has recently launched its new third-generation Avensis, available inboth a saloon and station wagon variant. The new Avensis, with its well-deserved reputation for quality, will be available in Spain in a four-doorversion and a family car version known as the Cross Sport and will be placedon sale with three different types of finish (Active, Advance and Executive)and four different types of engine, two new petrol engines and the originaldiesel engine that will come with a number of improvements.

The new Avensis is 5 centimetres longer than the previous model. In thisrespect, the new saloon measures a total 4.69 meters whilst the Cross Sportmeasures 4.76 meters. This new car model is also considerably wider than theprevious model with a total width of 1.81 meters providing it with greaterhabitability amongst other things. Its height remains the same. Its boot continuesto stand out as the most spacious in this segment of the market.

Equipped with a new chassis and suspension system and an increased amountof equipment, the Toyota Avensis reinforces its excellent level of comfort andsafety. We would mention, amongst other things, its new active head rests, theLane Keeping Assist (LKA) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW) systems, theAdaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system, rear-view camera for easier parking andPre-Crash Safety (PCS) system. Other standard equipment included in eachmodel is the push button start, automatic parking braking system and Bluetoothconnections for mobile telephones.

As mentioned previously, the original diesel engine has been enhanced and isavailable in two versions, the 2.2 litre D-4D with 150 HP and the 2.0 litre D-4Dwith 126 HP both with improved fuel consumption levels. The main noveltyhere is the new petrol engine with its Valvematic system available in the 1.6 litreunit delivering 132 HP version and the 1.8 litre with 147 HP version with theforthcoming launch of a 2.2 litre unit with 177 HP.

The Avensis comes with a six speed transmission system as standard althoughthe two higher displaced petrol units are available with Toyota’s new MultidriveS variable transmission system. Prices will range between 22,900 and 29,850Euros (excluding promotional discounts).

Anticipamos que los motores diesel se mantienen, con los conocidos 2.2 D-4D de150 caballos de potencia y el 2.0 D-4D de 126 caballos, aunque ahora ofrecen mejoresconsumos y prestaciones. La novedad viene dada con los nuevos motores de gasolina,que incorporan el sistema “Valvematic” en sus 1,6 litros de 132 caballos y 1,8 litros de147 caballos, y más adelante llegará un motor diesel 2.2 de 177 caballos.

Las cajas de cambio son manuales de 6 velocidades, a lo que se añade la opción paralos motores más potentes de incorporar un cambio automático “Multidrive S”. Los preciosestán comprendidos entre 22.900 y 29.850 euros (descuentos promocionales aparte).


NUEVO HYUNDAI I20■ El nuevo Hyundai i20 mide 3,94 metros de longitud, y llega para reemplazar al Getz.Estará a la venta en España desde marzo de 2009. En el momento de su lanzamiento estarádisponible únicamente con carrocería de cinco puertas. Posteriormente, también en 2009,llegará una versión de tres puertas. La gama de motores del i20 será muy completa, contres de gasolina y cuatro diesel, de entre 75 y 128 caballos de potencia.

NEW HYUNDAI I20■ The fresh and head-turning 3.94 meter long Hyundai i20, designed to substitutethe Hyundai Getz, will be available for purchase in Spain as of March, 2009. ARQUAEl pasado 26 de noviembre de 2008, el Ministerio de Cultura inauguró, bajo la presi-dencia de honor de Su Alteza Real la Infanta Dª Cristina, el Museo Nacional deArqueología Subacuática ARQUA, en la ciudad de Cartagena (Murcia). Este nuevomuseo viene a enriquecer el cada vez más amplio panorama cultural no sólo local,sino nacional e internacional en lo que a oferta museística se refiere, pero esta vez sehace con una institución que puede considerarse única y pionera en muchos aspectos.

On 26th November, 2008, the Ministry of Culture inaugurated, underthe honorary presidency of HRH Princess Cristina, the ARQUA, NationalUnderwater Archaeology Museum, in the Spanish city of Cartagena (Murcia).This unique archaeological museum has been designed not only to enrich thelocal, but also the national and international cultural offer.

UNA INSTITUCIÓN ÚNICA POR SU DISCIPLINA Y COLECCIONESPor primera vez se abre al público un museo cuya actividad se centra en la arqueología

subacuática, y es esta nueva y atractiva disciplina la que se muestra a los visitantes através de una exposición permanente que desarrolla un discurso centrado en ella.

Existen museos marítimos, navales, de arqueología, del mar, o mediterráneos, peroARQUA, como institución eje del Plan Nacional de Protección del Patrimonio CulturalSubacuático que el Ministerio de Cultura puso en marcha en el año 2007, es precursora ensu presentación a la ciudadanía de esta materia, que ha ocupado últimamente muchaspáginas en los medios: ahora, desde un punto de vista estrictamente científico pero con unlenguaje sugerente y comprensible para todos, el público podrá conocer qué es exacta-mente ese Patrimonio Cultural Subacuático, cómo se protege, se excava y se conserva,qué conocimientos nos aporta sobre nuestro pasado, y además podrá ver todo ello ilustradocon una selección de los principales materiales arqueológicos conservados por el Museo,entre los que sobresalen los restos de las embarcaciones de época fenicia halladas enMazarrón, un excepcional conjunto de colmillos de elefante también de tiempos fenicios, unnutrido grupo de ánforas de varias épocas, anclas, lingotes… y otras piezas que sonmuestra singular de la riqueza y diversidad de nuestro patrimonio bajo el mar.

ÚNICA POR SUS RECURSOS TECNOLÓGICOSEl uso y la variedad de las nuevas tecnologías que acompañan a estas piezas en la

exposición permanente de ARQUA es otro de los aspectos más destacables del Museo.Este ha querido acercarse a la sociedad utilizando, en aras de facilitar la comprensión yresultar atractivo para todos, novedosos recursos interactivos, producciones audiovisuales,

escenografías y elementos manipulables, diseñados en exclusiva para el Museo, con elobjeto de ser utilizados y resultar de interés para una amplia variedad de público.

El Museo sumerge al visitante en un mar de 250 pantallas de LEDS que hacen de estainstalación la más grande de Europa aplicada a una producción museográfica.

El elemento central de la escenografía del Museo es la gran reproducción del pecio delMazarrón, a escala 1:1, que muestra los restos del barco, sus objetos tal y como se encon-traron, y parte de la caja de seguridad que se construyó para su conservación.

Frente a estos recursos también se presenta un espacio dedicado a la arquitectura navalque contiene cuatro secciones de barcos realizados de forma artesanal, fiel al ensamblajeoriginal de la época, construidos con maderas de explotación sostenible.

Culmina la propuesta expositiva en el lucernario, el gran escaparate que da a la plaza delMuseo, donde se suspenden del techo la estructura en hierro de dos grandes embarca-ciones: una kyrenia griega y una coca medieval.

a unique project that offers visitors, through its permanent exhibition, all kindsof interesting information on this intriguing subject.

In spite of the numerous maritime, naval, archaeological and sea andMediterranean theme museums open to the Spanish public, the new NationalUnderwater Archaeology Museum, a core project of the ‘Plan Nacional deProtección del Patrimonio Cultural Subacuático’ (National Underwater CulturalPatrimonial Protection Plan) introduced by the Ministry of Culture in 2007, is thefirst of a kind and has received an enormous amount of scientific media coverageoffering all types of information aimed at providing the public with a clear andconcise idea of the value of this underwater archaeological patrimony and howit is protected, excavated and conserved, the knowledge its provides regardingthe past, perfectly illustrated with a selection of archaeological remains conservedby the ARQUA such as the remains of a number of Phoenician sea vessels foundin Mazarron, an exceptional group of elephants tusks also dating back to thePhoenician period, an important variety of amphorae dating back to differenthistorical periods along with a number of anchors, ingots and other incredibleitems that demonstrate the wealth and diversity of Spain’s underwater patrimony.

UNIQUE TECHNOLOGICAL RESOURCESThe wide variety of state-of-the-art technology that accompanies the permanent

exhibition of the National Underwater Archaeology Museum is another of its

outstanding aspects. These unique technological resources have been employedto make a tour of the ARQUA as attractive as possible and include novel interactiveresources, audiovisual productions, set designs and elements that can be handled,designed exclusively for the Museum and aimed at capturing the visitor’s interest.

The National Underwater Archaeology Museum submerges visitors in a sea of250 LED screens that have converted its installations into the largest installationused for this purpose in Europe.

The central part of the Museum houses the extraordinary reproductions of anumber of vessel remains found in Mazarron, on a 1:1 scale, along with a varietyof objects which have been laid out in exactly the same position as they were found.

In front of these extraordinary remains, visitors will find an area dedicated tonaval architecture offering four sections of handmade sea craft, faithful replicasof the original structures, constructed with wood provided by sustainable developedtrees.

The exhibition culminates in a luminous area facing the access to the Museumwhere visitors will find, suspended from the ceiling, iron frames of two seavessels: a Greek Kyrenia style boat and a small medieval vessel.

Y en este aspecto el Museo resulta ejemplar en suapuesta por la accesibilidad total, al incorporar en todos los aspectos de su relación con elpúblico los recursos necesarios para resultar accesible, en sus espacios y en su contenido,tanto al público general (nacional o extranjero), como a aquel que cuenta con algunadiscapacidad. El museo no tiene barreras físicas en sus áreas públicas, dispone de dispo-sitivos tecnológicos para eliminar las barreras de comunicación, y está prevista en breve laincorporación de un servicio de audioguías y signoguías que cuentan con recorridosespeciales en lengua de signos para personas con discapacidad auditiva y de audiodes-cripciones para personas con discapacidad visual.

UN EDIFICIO SINGULAR Y ABIERTOEl propio edificio, que ya se presentó en el mes de enero de este año por el Ministro de

Cultura en una Jornada de Puertas Abiertas, es otro de sus atractivos, obra del arquitectoGuillermo Vázquez Consuegra. El proyecto fue seleccionado por su calidad arquitectónicapara ser expuesto en el MoMA de Nueva York en On site: nueva arquitectura española,exposición dedicada a los proyectos arquitectónicos contemporáneos españoles, queestuvo posteriormente en Madrid.

Son dos grandes volúmenes los que concretan al exterior la forma arquitectónica, quese centra en el concepto de lo subacuático y tiene por objetivo que el visitante penetre enlas profundidades para acceder al patrimonio sumergido que es objeto de su exposición.

La ubicación del edificio en el paseo marítimo de la ciudad de Cartagena y su mismaconcepción, con un programa de espacios pensado para que ARQUA no sólo sea un lugar deexposición, sino también punto de encuentro cultural, facilitan enormemente su integraciónen la vida urbana y la relación con la ciudadanía.

UNA OFERTA CULTURAL DE CALIDADEl Museo, además de poseer los espacios propios de una institución de estas caracte-

rísticas, como salas de exposición, almacenes, zonas de administración, investigación,mantenimiento, restauración, etc., cuenta en primer lugar con una gran plaza pública, queconfigura el eje del diálogo museo-entorno y articula su relación con la ciudad; y paraconvertirse en activo foco cultural cuenta asimismo con otras áreas, como una amplia zonade acogida, un luminoso y espectacular espacio con vistas privilegiadas sobre la bahía deCartagena destinado a ser cafetería y restaurante, un salón de actos equipado con todos losrecursos tecnológicos que hacen posible celebrar desde un congreso internacional hastauna representación de teatro, espacios para la realización de actividades y talleres didác-ticos, una amplia y versátil sala de exposiciones temporales y, por supuesto, la tienda deARQUA, que dispone de una variada gama de productos de calidad para todos los gustos.Para dar servicio a estudiosos e investigadores el Museo cuenta también con una completay moderna biblioteca especializada, y parte de sus almacenes concebidos como visitables.

This modern museum has been constructed free of anyphysical barriers. It has also eliminated any possible communication barriers byincorporating special guided tours for the deaf and blind.

A UNIQUE BUILDINGThe National Underwater Archaeology Museum building, presented by the

Minister of Culture in January, 2008 during an open day, is another of its numerousattractions. Designed by the architect, Guillermo Vazquez Consuegra, thisimpressive construction was chosen for its high quality architectural characteristicsto form part of the On Site: New Spanish Architecture Exhibition held in the MoMAMuseum in New York. This outstanding exhibition of contemporary Spanisharchitectural projects was later on show in Madrid.

The exterior part of the extraordinary National Underwater ArchaeologyMuseum building is formed by two large volumes built around the concept ofunderwater archaeology and designed to allow the visitor to penetrate into theprofundities acceding, in this way, to a wide variety of submerged patrimony.

The building is situated on the sea promenade of the beautiful Mediterraneancoastal city of Cartagena and has been conceived not only as a place to housethe ARQUA’s fascinating collection, but also as a cultural meeting point withinreach of the citizen.

A UNIQUE CULTURAL OFFERIn addition to the typical installations of this type of museum building such

as a number of audiovisual rooms, warehouses, administrative offices andinvestigation, maintenance and restoration departments, the Museum stands ona magnificent public square that configures the axis of a dialogue between theMuseum itself and its city surroundings, an active cultural centre with a largeluminous cafeteria and restaurant area where visitors are offered spectacularviews of the Cartagena sea bay. Visitors will also find a conference hall, equippedwith the latest technological advances, for celebrating different kinds of eventsranging from international conferences to theatre performances, activity areasand educational workshops, a large and versatile temporary exhibition area and,of course, the ARQUA souvenir shop offering an important variety of high qualityproducts designed for all ages. Finally, we would mention its specialised libraryintended for students and investigators and a warehouse area deliberatelydesigned to form part of the Museum’s itinerary.

Situada en la bella comarca riojana de Los Cameros, a tansólo 50 kilómetros al sur de Logroño, Sierra de Cebollerase erige como uno de los emplazamientos españoles dondemejor se conserva ese equilibrio, siempre complejo y difícilde sostener, entre el mantenimiento y desarrollo del medionatural, del que recalcamos una fauna y flora excepcio-nales, y las actividades humanas, cuyas huellas culturales yartísticas en la zona resultan también dignas de mención.

Situated in the beautiful La Rioja district of LosCameros, just 50 kilometres south of Logroño, theSierra de Cebollera stands out as one of Spain’smost well-conserved nature spots, an area thathas managed to strike a delicate balance betweendevelopment and conservation. It is home ofan exceptional variety of flora and fauna as wellas an interesting number of cultural and artisticmonuments, the result of the numerous activitiesthat have taken place here over the centuries.

A estos atractivos hay que sumarle el hecho de haber recibido el preciado certificado ‘Q’de calidad turística debido tanto a sus magníficas instalaciones, materializadas en áreasrecreativas especialmente habilitadas para su uso dotadas de merenderos, mesas, asadores,contenedores de basura, aparcamientos y otros servicios, como a la atención que esdispensada al cada vez mayor número de personas que acuden aquí para disfrutar de unanaturaleza única. En este apartado debemos nombrar la gran labor que efectúan los doscentros de interpretación, atendidos por educadores ambientales, con los que cuenta: el deSierra de Cebollera, en Villoslada de Cameros, cuya exposición permanente trata sobre losvalores y recursos ambientales y culturales del Parque, y el Centro de la Trashumancia, en laVenta de Piqueras, con una muestra centrada en esa ancestral actividad arraigada desde hacesiglos en estas tierras que, además de ofrecer información sobre las rutas que seguían,normas, costumbres, organización, creencias y tradición oral que conformaban la vidacotidiana de los pastores, exhibe gran cantidad de objetos empleados por ellos en sus viajes.

Dentro del Parque se dan cita distintos ecosistemas compuestos por paisajes caracteri-zados por una enorme biodiversidad perfectamente adaptada a sus peculiaridades y condi-ciones climatológicas.

La pluralidad de comunidades forestales es otro de los rasgos característicos que debenser constatados, y más teniendo en cuenta el reducido ámbito del Parque, dándose cita a lolargo de sus 236,4 kilómetros cuadrados árboles tan preciosos como hayas, rebollos,abedules, robles atlánticos, arces, serbales, tilos, pinos negros, acebos, mostajos, olmos

These include anumber of recreational areas equipped with picnic tables and benches, barbecues,rubbish bins, public parking etc. Visitors will also find here two excellentinterpretation centres staffed by a number of well-trained professionals. We wouldsuggest, therefore, that visitors do not miss a visit to Villoslada de Cameros, homeof a permanent exhibition offering a wide variety of interesting information on thearea’s impressive environmental resources and the “Trashumancia” Centre inVenta de Piqueras where they will find an exhibition dedicated to the centuries oldseasonal migration of livestock. The “Trashumancia” Centre offers all kinds ofinteresting information regarding the migratory routes, rules, customs, beliefsand stories of the local shepherds and herdsmen. It also contains a large numberof tools and objects used during migrations.

The Sierra de Cebollera Nature Park is made up of a variety of ecosystems. Itslandscapes, strongly affected by the extraordinary variety of biodiversity, haveadapted perfectly to the climatic peculiarities and conditions of this area.

The large amount of forest area is one the main characteristics of the Sierrade Cebollera Nature Park, especially relevant if we take into consideration the

relatively small surface area of the Park. Visitors will find here important areasof European beech, Pyrenean oak, silver birch, common oak, maple, service, lime,Austrian pine, holly, common whitebeam, wych elm, aspen, Holm oak and conifertrees as well as large areas of thicket and pastureland.

Its magnificent forest area also provides an important source of food andprotection for a large number of bird species. In fact, the Sierra de Cebollera hasbeen catalogued as a SPA area. Bird species include the crossbill, coal tit, crestedtit, goldcrest and European thrush. Other more common species include the jay,great spotted woodpecker, woodpigeon, chaffinch, and robin. It also houses anumber of bird of prey species such as the goshawk, hawk owl and Eurasiantawny owl.

Its excellent catalogue of animal species includes a variety of amphibians suchas the asp viper and green lizard as well as a selection of mammals such as thedeer, roe deer, boar, wild cat, marten, dormouse and bank vole.

Finally, its beautiful landscape is also home of a charming artistic-monumentalpatrimony where visitors will find an excellent selection of picturesque bars andrestaurants serving delicious culinary specialities. Amongst its magnificent touristsights, we would mention the beautiful Puente Ra waterfall, the Achichuelo-La Blanca picnic area, the San Andres Ethnographical Museum, the Tierras AltasLomas de Orio Sculpture Park and the Hoyos (Holes) of Iregua, the popular namegiven to the lakes that have been formed by glacial erosion.

Entre lasespecies singulares en la fauna riojana citar piquituerto común, carbonero garrapinos,herrerillo capuchino, reyezuelo sencillo, mirlo capiblanco... sin olvidar subrayar otrasmás extendidas como arrendajos, picos picapinos, palomas torcaces, pinzones vulgares,petirrojos... rapaces diurnas, como el azor o el gavilán, y nocturnas, como el cárabo.

Anfibios, como el tritón palmeado; reptiles, como la víbora áspid o el lagarto verde; y unconjunto de mamíferos formado por ciervos, corzos, jabalíes, gatos monteses, garduñas,lirones grises, topillos rojos... completarían, resumidamente, el fantástico catálogo animaldel Parque Natural Sierra de Cebollera.

Repleto de sugerentes parajes en los que habitan multitud de interesantes especies defauna y flora; jalonado por pueblos con encanto poseedores de un estupendo patrimonioartístico-monumental, en los que da gusto paladear sus deliciosas especialidadesculinarias, el Parque Natural Sierra de Cebollera completa sus atractivos con diversasposibilidades para disfrutar de la naturaleza y la cultura, entre las que les recomendamoslas cascadas de Puente Ra, el área recreativa del Achichuelo-La Blanca, el Museo Etno-gráfico de San Andrés, el Parque de Esculturas “Tierras Altas Lomas de Orio” o los hoyos,que es como son denominadas popularmente las lagunas formadas por la erosión de losglaciares, de Iregua.

Desde el 1 de marzo de 2008 Iberia Regional AIR NOSTRUM hacomenzado a introducir a bordo de sus 70 aeronaves, excepto en losvuelos interbaleares, una nueva clase ejecutiva: BUSINESS CLASS paraofrecer una mayor comodidad a bordo y un servicio especial que va apermitirles disfrutar de mostradores de facturación diferenciados,acceso a las salas VIP, parking VIP gratuito en Madrid, Barcelona yValencia, una mayor franquicia de equipaje, más puntos Iberia Plus, uncuidado y selecto servicio a bordo con productos D.O., lectura a bordogratuita durante todo el día y recepción de equipaje preferente. En todaslas aeronaves de la compañía la nueva Business Class se ubicará enlos asientos delanteros salvo en las unidades de ATR-72 en las que laBusiness Class ocupará los asientos posteriores, los más cercanos ala puerta.

Para que el servicio ofrecido cumpla exactamente con lo que esperanlos pasajeros de esta compañía, el catering se sirve en vajillas deporcelana, así como en vasos y copas de cristal. As of 1st March, 2008, Iberia Regional AIR NOSTRUM will be introducinga new executive class: BUSINESS CLASS, in its fleet of 70 aircraft, excepton its internal Balearic flights. This new Business Class provides increasedcomfort on board and a number of additional services such as specialcheck-in counters, access to VIP rooms, free VIP parking in Madrid,Barcelona and Valencia, increased baggage allowance, more Iberia Pluspoints, a carefully selected range of DO products, a free 24 hour pressservice and preferential luggage handling. The new Business Class will belocated at the front of each aircraft except in the case of ATR-72 aircraftwhere it will be located in the area close to the door.

Iberia Regional AIR NOSTRUM uses chinaware, stainless steel cutleryand glassware to serve its famous on-board catering. At the same time,it offers a wide range of snacks served on specially prepared trays fromwhich passengers are invited to select the snacks of their choice.

On-board ServiceIberia Regional AIR NOSTRUM offers its passengers a number of specially

designed menus elaborated with a wide selection of fresh regional products.The type of on-board service offered depends, in the majority of cases, on the

type of aircraft and, of course, the flight route. The menus on the Company’sinternational flights may differ from the menus on its national flights. The typeof aircraft also plays an important role in the type of menus offered. The commondenominator with regard to its menus, however, is their excellent quality.

Iberia Regional AIR NOSTRUM stands out, amongst other things, for thespecial attention it gives to its passengers transforming these into the realprotagonists of its flights. Its on-board service includes a free bar service.Passengers will, upon request, be served the drink of their choice. All drinks areaccompanied by a small packet of nuts.

It is worth noting that Iberia Regional AIR NOSTRUM has, for security reasons,had to reduce part of its On-board Service on a number of short-range flights inaccordance with present-day flight regulations.

AIR NOSTRUM participa en el Estudio GEM de creaciónde empresas

AIR NOSTRUM ha presentado los datos del Estudio GEM (Global Entre-preneurship Monitor), sobre la creación de empresas y crecimiento económicoen 2007, cuyo dato más representativo es que cerca de 269.000 ciudadanos dela Comunidad Valenciana se encuentran involucrados en negocios de recientecreación.

Se trata de la mayor iniciativa de investigación sobre el espíritu empresarialvalenciano, de la que AIR NOSTRUM es patrocinador –por cuarto año conse-cutivo–, y en la que han colaborado la Universidad Miguel Hernández y elInstituto de Empresa. De hecho, el acto estuvo presidido por la Consellera deIndustria, Comercio e Innovación, Belén Juste; el Director del Estudio y Cate-drático de Organización de Empresas de la Universidad Miguel Hernández, JoséMaría Gómez Gras; el Director del Proyecto GEM en España, Ignacio de la Vega;y el Consejero Delegado de AIR NOSTRUM, Carlos Bertomeu.

Desde siempre la Comunidad Valenciana se ha caracterizado por ser una delas autonomías con mayor dinamismo empresarial, un hecho que queda demos-trado año tras año. Así en 2007 la actividad emprendedora creció hasta alcanzaral 8,4 de la población adulta valenciana –entre 18 y 64 años–, lo que supone unaumento de 1 punto porcentual con respecto al año anterior y viene a confirmarel crecimiento continuado de este indicador en los 4 años en los que se haefectuado la medición.

AIR NOSTRUM participates in the Global EntrepreneurshipMonitor (GEM) Study

AIR NOSTRUM has recently presented the latest data on the GlobalEntrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) Study with regard to the economic growthand creation of business ventures during 2007. One of the most significantpieces of data in the Annual GEM Study Report is that some 269,000 citizensof the Comunidad Valenciana have found work in recently created businesses.

The GEM Report is an important tool for measuring the levels ofentrepreneurship in Valencia. AIR NOSTRUM is, for the fourth consecutive year,sponsor of this important study. Collaborators include the Miguel HernandezUniversity and the Business Institute. The presentation of the 2007 GEM Studywas presided by the Regional Minister of Industry, Commerce and Innovation,Ms. Belen Juste, the Director of Studies and Head of the Business StudiesDepartment of the Miguel Hernandez University, Mr. Jose Maria Gomez Gras,the Director of the GEM Project in Spain, Mr. Ignacio de la Vega, and the ChiefExecutive Officer of AIR NOSTRUM, Mr. Carlos Bertomeu.

The Autonomous Region of Valencia has always stood out for having oneof Spain’s most dynamic business sectors. Valencia’s business activities havereached a total of 8.4% of the Region of Valencia’s adult population – between18 and 64 years of age – representing a one point percentage increase on theprevious year’s figures, confirming the upward trend of the results shown bythe GEM Report over the past four years.

This magnificent exhibition offers a unique lookat the Spanish War of Independence thanks to the meticulous investigation of ancientdocuments and a notable effort to recover one of the most important events in Spain’slong history.
