WE ARE ALL EVANGELIZERS The in i t ia t ive of evangel izat ion by Bishop Boyea s tar ted about four years ago, because the Cathol ic Mass at tendance in the Lans ing Diocese was dropping at a not iceable rate . The f i r s t s tep in the Bishop’s p lan was to s t rengthen the fa i th of those in the pews , wi th th i s co lumn and the ALPHA course two of the most v is ib le s igns of that at S t . Joe ’s . Our next s tep i s to reach out to those who have le f t S t . Joe ’s (and the church in genera l ) as ev idenced by the recent “Ca l led by Name” Diocesan Assembly , and the evangel izat ion pamphlets in our pews . These can guide us through the one-on-one evangel izat ion process to he lp our f r iends and re lat ives back to the church. Now a new e lement has been added to the equat ion. Surveys have shown that many Cathol ics in th i s country have been drawn to Protes tant churches because they are jus t more welcoming than Cathol ic churches are . We have been made aware of a unique opportuni ty at S t . Joe ’s of the number of immigrants in the community who need a Church. Our f i r s t s tep i s ask ing severa l S t . Joe ’s groups ( i .e . Average Joes , Fr iendship C i rc le , ALPHA leaders ) to put together food baskets to share wi th thi s community . The next s tep i s to evangel ize these people, and we could use some Spanish-speaking par i sh ioners to he lp in th i s process . So th i s i s a p lea to those b i - l ingual par i sh ioners to contact the church of f ice to see how they can he lp . I t i s our informat ion that th is community of immigrants i s most ly Cathol ic , so i t i s not so much convers ion of fa i th evangel izat ion that we need, but suf f ic ient communicators to extend the S t . Joe welcoming mat to them. Th is i s a unique opportuni ty to not only he lp meet the phys ica l needs of th i s community but the sp i r i tua l needs as wel l . Th is i s a chance to show that St . Joseph par i sh i s an inc lus ive par i sh , not an exc lus ive one. Th is i s a way of showing St . Johns at - large that we are not a country c lub , but “a p lace of re f reshment , peace and love” as s tated on the f ront page of our bul le t in each week. I f we are to l i ve up to our par i sh s tatement that “A l l are welcome,” we must somet imes s tep out of our comforts zones to make th is a p lace “where the word of God i s procla imed and f r iendship i s of fered . ” I f you speak Spanish , or know someone in the par i sh who does , now i s the t ime to step out of your comfort zones and, in an act of evangel izat ion, he lp those look ing for a sp i r i tua l home to f ind one here . ————By the Evangel izat ion TeamBy the Evangel izat ion TeamBy the Evangel izat ion TeamBy the Evangel izat ion Team

Now is the time to become aware of the general acceptance of assisted

suicide and euthanasia in our world. By the time laws are passed (MI has a bill in committee); it will be too late to change the idea that somehow this assault on life is a good thing. “In June, the American Medical Association (AMA) announced it would consider changing the organization's long-standing opposition to assisted suicide and euthanasia to a position of "neutrality." The AMA's Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs (CEJA) will study the proposed change and provide a recommendation at its June 2017 meeting. From November 12-15, 2016, delegates and alternates of the AMA will have the opportunity to offer their perspectives on the topic at the organization's interim meeting. The discussion and eventual decision are significant, as opposition to assisted suicide by national and state medical associations has been critical to preserving laws against the practice”. The Catholic Church and people of faith have continually stood against these laws because assisted suicide and euthanasia devalue the human person, undermine the medical profession, and leave the terminally ill, elderly, disabled, and indeed, all individuals, vulnerable. A STEWARDSHIP

MOMENT Today we listen to the humble

confession of Saint Dismas, the good

thief; a confession that brought him

mercy, forgiveness and great favor by

the Lord. What can his humility teach those who seek to be good stewards?

That we must give up our self-

importance, our self-centeredness, and learn to give ourselves over to God?

That God has entrusted us with

everything we have as gift to be used in God’s service? That we treat others

not with arrogance, sarcasm or put

down, but with reverence and respect as gifts from God? Is it by recognizing

that God is the center of the universe,

not us, and that only Christ the King can bring us genuine peace and

salvation? From International Catholic Stewardship Council
