    Welcome, CKLDP Class of 2019!

We are very excited for this year’s Christopher Kelley Leadership Development Program to officially begin at noon on Friday, September 6, 2019! Our kick-off session will take place at the District Architecture Center, located at 421 7th Street NW in Washington, DC. Called “Boot Camp,” this exciting half-day is packed with information and interactive exercises intended to introduce you to each other and help you prepare for future sessions.

Over the next nine months, you will gain tremendous insight and knowledge about the qualities of leadership required to become an advocate for yourself, for your profession, and for your community. You will also enjoy many opportunities to exchange ideas and insights with each other. We highly encourage you to share your stories, expertise, and professional experiences with your fellow program participants. Learning from your peers is just as valuable as learning from the program speakers, and furthermore, building relationships with one another is one of the best aspects of participating in CKLDP!

Enclosed in this book you will find all kinds of useful program information, to include the agenda for Boot Camp, the CKLDP session schedule, resources for future session planning, and your Class members’ resumes and work samples. There is also a contact list of everyone’s names and email addresses. We hope the information included on the following pages will prove useful in helping you get know your fellow Classmates and their professional accomplishments to date.

After the Boot Camp session ends, we invite everyone to join us for Happy Hour at Dirty Habit, located at 555 8th St NW, Washington, DC 20004. We would love the opportunity to chat in a more informal setting, and Dirty Habit is a fun spot to relax and enjoy a beverage.

Feel free to contact any member of the Committee if you have questions. We are all here to ensure you get the most possible out of your CKLDP experience, and we look forward to getting to know you this year.

    Best Regards, The CKLDP Committee

OverviewThe Christopher Kelley Leadership Development Program was created to help prepare emerging architecture and design professionals for future leadership roles. This year-long program consists of nine monthly half-day sessions that are attended by the program’s sixteen participants, called Scholars. Prospective participants go through a competitive application process where proven career success, community involvement, long term goals, and the individual’s firm support are considered prior to program acceptance.

CurriculumThe CKLDP curriculum focuses on core leadership skills such as marketing, business development, office and firm management, public speaking, professional ethics and the law, philanthropy, board involvement, community service, industry trends, and the future of the practice.

All sessions after the first “Boot Camp” session will be planned by the sixteen program Scholars. Boot Camp is intended to introduce Scholars to the program, each other, and further give them an opportunity to help shape the CKLDP curriculum for that year. Scholars are paired together according to their expressed interests and skills, and together each pair is responsible for planning one session during the year. Sessions are typically held on the first Friday of each month, September through May, from 12:00pm – 5:00pm.

AttendanceThe program’s success is directly related to all of the Scholars’ active engagement in the sessions, and therefore attendance is mandatory. As part of the application process, prospective program participants are required to sign an Agreement Form affirming their understanding of the attendance policy, and

firm recognition of the policy is required as well. Because sometimes emergencies arise, each Scholar is allowed one excused absence over the course of the year. If two sessions are missed, a fine of $50 will be sent to the participant’s firm. Further absence will result in an additional $50 fine and expulsion from the program.

AIA Continuing EducationIt is intended for this program to have AIA CE credit available for its participants.

Honoring Christopher Kelley Christopher Kelley, AIA, was an active leader of the architectural community from the late 1990s until his passing in May 2012. Over the course of his fifteen years in professional practice, Christopher was a respected leader in both the Institute and in Gensler’s Washington, DC office. A series of national leadership roles, first with the NAC and later the YAF, helped Christopher earn recognition from the Institute, and in 2010, he was honored with the AIA’s prestigious Young Architects Award. In their statement about his contributions to the profession, the jury stated, “Christopher has proven himself a young leader within and around the AIA, a real example for other young professionals.”

Through his many volunteer and professional endeavors, Christopher enthusiastically contributed to programs that benefitted his fellow design professionals, but beyond his efforts to improve the profession, he was simply a great person.

This program is intended to continue Christopher’s legacy of leadership and activism.

    Program Founders

Ryan McEnroe, AIA, ASLA, LEED AP | Co-Founder, Past Chair

Ryan spent the majority of his childhood working the fields and learning the principals of organic agriculture on his family’s farm. These regenerative qualities have been ingrained into his critical thinking and are brought into his approach during every aspect of the design process. As a graduate of the University of Virginia, Mr. McEnroe is both a licensed architect and licensed landscape architect. He is an active participant within the professional community, serving on the National Architectural Accrediting Board as well as the National Council of Architecture Registration Board. Additionally, he serves the AIA|DC Chapter on the Emerging Architects Committee, lectures for the chapter’s Architecture Registration Exam Prep Course, and serves on the chapter’s Education Committee. In 2014 he was awarded with the AIA|DC Emerging Architect of the Year Award. Mr. McEnroe has received a number of design awards, including an AIA|DC Un-built Honor Award for the University of Virginia Center for Innovation, and a VS-ASLA Honor Award for the South Carlyle Master Plan. In 2018, He was awarded the Young Architect's Award.

Sean Stadler, AIA, LEED AP | Co-Founder, AIA DC Board Liaison

Mr. Stadler is a Design Principal and partner of WDG where he focuses on elevating the firm’s stature in design, with particular emphasis on enhancing the civic realm. Mr. Stadler takes a strong leadership role and his commitment to design excellence and innovative thinking and influences the projects with which he is involved. He believes that design is a process and that this process begins not with a brief, program, or even a charette, but rather with the people from which ideas flow. His example shows that leadership is a two-way street; it involves the ability to influence others and be receptive to the needs of those you lead. In his world view, design excellence is not the application of certain techniques or the realization of inborn talent, so much as the development of a latent understanding for the negotiations that are at the heart of architecture; negotiations between site and program, client and designer, architect and engineer. Mr. Stadler has been honored with an AIA President’s Award for his service to the profession and was recognized as one of the “rising stars of the AEC industry” by Building Design + Construction Magazine in 2009. He is a recipient of the 2011 AIA Young Architects award where the jury noted that “he is a unique individual of outstanding talent and clear commitment.”

Katie Selis, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP BD+C | Sponsorship Advisor

Over the course of eight years, Katie’s work at Studio Twenty Seven Architecture has been a mix of transforming both old and new architecture, each response determined through critical study of its ability to serve the needs of its present and future users, the environmental and socio-economic contributions it will make over the span of its life, and a fundamental acknowledgment of the context of place. With five years of experience working with mission driven clients as a member of a studio designingimpactful architecture throughout the City and beyond, Katie left Washington, DC to pursue a Master of Architecture degree with a fortitude to continue such work. The focus of her graduate studies while at UC Berkeley was resiliency -developing and designing ways in which the natural environment and the built architecture can become more symbiotic in at-risk urban coastal communities that continue to be devastated by hurricanes and major storm events. Her research in this is ongoing and continues to influence her professional work. She strives to create architecture that enriches the lives of those with whom it comes into contact and makes a positive impact on its surroundings. Many of the projects she has worked on cross demographic, economic, and political barriers to provide high quality design to those often needing it the most.
