Vice Minister of Health, Lao PDR

Dear respected colleagues from all over ASEAN and beyond,

I represent the Ministry of Health, it is my great pleasure to be part of the opening ceremony for such a special event, not just one, but three conferences this weekend. We join hands with the Faculty of Medicine of Thammasat University, from the Kingdom of Thailand in hosting the 4th AECOM in conjunction with the 5th Indochina Ocular Inflammation Study Group and the 9th Lao Ophthalmologist Conference at Don Chan Palace, Vientiane Capital, Lao PDR. We would like to warmly welcome all attending delegates.

The Ministry of Health and AECOM has reached an agreement at the end of 2015 in Vientiane Capital, Lao PDR, that we aspire to make the relationship between ASEAN countries to be unique, strong and ready to develop and move forwards together. Therefore this meeting is a meaningful event in helping to support each other for academic development in ASEAN countries, elevating ourselves to the international level. Besides this, it is to firmly strengthen and harmonize our relations with one another.

Once again, I would like to the take this occasion to express my thanks to the Faculty of Medicine of Thammasat University for making this special event possible. For financially and organizationally supporting the Lao Ophthalmological Society in hosting the 4th AECOM and for being a joint host with the National Ophthalmology Center and Ministry of Health, receiving special guests from all over the world. I appreciate all speakers who have traveled here today, devoting your time to give and share your knowledge for the benefit of the Lao people and the ASEAN region.

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 4th AECOM. Moreover, it is my honor to hold this meeting in conjunction with two other Ophthalmology societies, the 5th Indochina Ocular Inflammation Study Group and the 9th Lao Ophthalmologist Conference during 11th – 12th December 2016 at this ancient and fascinating city of Vientiane.

This meeting is designed for ophthalmologists, basic scientists, pathologists and other medical professionals who wish to broaden and update their knowledge of the field of ophthalmology and its related-disorders. The aim of 4th AECOM is to draw the international community of ophthalmologists in the AEC region together at the meeting in order to share the new concepts in diagnosis, clinical management and research findings in eye diseases. We also aim to provide an international venue for junior researchers to present their findings and to provide international senior researchers to present their achievements and implications in this field. In addition, we are so honored to have world class speakers to join and share their expertise with us.

Professor Vithoune VisonnavongPresident of Lao Ophthalmological Society

Greetings to all respected delegates both from Laos and from abroad, and the Minister of the Ministry of Health, Lao PDR.

I represent the Lao Ophthalmological Society, it is my great pleasure to warmly welcome you to Vientiane, a city rich in history and culture. We were known as the Lanxang Kingdom, meaning the land of a million elephants, resplendent with blossoming Dork Champa, also known as the Plumeria flower across our lands, and our realm was home to the warmest of smiles.

Today we have the honor of hosting the 4th AECOM, in a joint partnership with AECOM foundation, the Lao Ministry of Health for the 9th Lao Ophthalmologist conference, and the 5th Indochina Ocular Inflammation Study Group for an eventful weekend in Vientiane.

The purpose of this convention is exchanging and improving knowledge and academic ability of ophthalmic health care, there are many famous lecturers from ASEAN countries and other countries. Also, there is such a diversity topics with many topics interesting and applicable to clinical practice. This convention is not only to support academic knowledge, but it is a center of opportunities to meet other ophthalmologists from difference organizations in ASEAN countries. Also, we hope that they can all develop deep friendships and contributions in mutual development.

In the past when AECOM first emerged as an organization, members of AECOM have helped each other improve the ophthalmic health of people in the region. For example, the Faculty of Medicine at Thammasat University of Thailand has supported the scholarship in training Ophthalmology residents and nurses from neighboring countries.

Additionally, Ho Chi Minh Hospital of Vietnam has supported a 3 month training course in Phaecoemulsification for 15 Lao Ophthalmologists. These monumental successes are few of many great achievements we have made and will continue to accomplish for our region.

Once more, I, the representative host to our combined events in Vientiane would like to take this occasion to express my sincerest gratitude to the faculty of Medicine of Thammasat University for supporting the Lao Ophthalmological Society to make this meeting happen today. And my thanks to all the Ophthalmologists from all represented ASEAN countries and beyond for devoting time to be here and sharing your knowledge and culture with us. Particularly, I would like to give my heartfelt thanks to the Minister of the Ministry of Health, Lao PDR for devoting your time to be with us here for the opening ceremony this day. Dear esteemed colleagues,

Our vision at Thammasat University Faculty of Medicine is to promote development of Ophthalmic Healthcare through regional and international collaboration, true to the core values of ASEAN. Hence the Thammasat University Faculty of Medicine has brought together many Ophthalmologists from all over the ASEAN region to form our organization of AECOM, fully known as the ASEAN Economic Community Ophthalmology Meeting. Using international scientific conferences as a platform for building friendships among Ophthalmologists and uniting these talented and dedicated clinicians for collaborative efforts in improving ophthalmic healthcare for the whole region.

AECOM was first held in Thailand for two consecutive and very successful years since 2013, leading to an agreement between all participating countries to take turns hosting AECOMs annually. With the Cambodian Ophthalmological Society having the honor of hosting the 3rd AECOM at Siem Reap in 2015.Followed by the Lao Ophthalmological Society, having the honor of hosting the 4th AECOM in Vientiane here today.

Furthermore, earlier in September this year, we have also hosted the first AECOM Summit, a special AECOM event bringing together the leaders of many Ophthalmology societies in the ASEAN region. With the purpose of supporting collaboration in the aspects of education, training, research and provision of health services among Ophthalmologists and Ophthalmic Nurses of the AECOM community, cultivating our future success and growth in the ASEAN region.

This year’s AECOM is a very unique event, in that we have the honor of being joined by the Indo China Ocular Inflammation Study Group during the second day of our conference here in Don Chan Palace Hotel, and we are also joined by the 9th Annual Lao Ophthalmologist Conference combined in our program. Our colleagues have gathered many world class Ophthalmologists from very diverse backgrounds, we are excited to integrate our social and academic events with one another on such a special occasion.

As the Founding President of AECOM, I hereby express my deepest gratitude to all participating members of AECOM here with us today. Our unity shall lead us to grow stronger and better together from this day forth.

After the wonderful success of the 1st and 2nd AECOM in Thailand and the 3rd AECOM last year hosted by Cambodian Ophthalmological Society at Siem Reap, Cambodia, It is a great pleasure for me to welcome you back to the 4th AECOM today in Vientiane, Lao PDR, with the Lao Ophthalmological Society as your host. Furthermore, this event is made even more special with the conjunction of two additional conferences, the 5th Indo-China Ocular Inflammation Study Group, and the 9th Lao Ophthalmologist Conference, between us all, we have a multitude of international speakers. This is a great opportunity for us all to socialize and integrate for a truly fruitful gathering of Ophthalmologists in the region.

The People’s Democratic Republic of Lao is a beautiful land with picturesque scenery and people of wonderful culture. I hope that during you stay you will have the chance to explore and cherish what Laos has to offer. I am certain that your positive experiences here in social and cultural exchange will enhance our relationships with one another in the spirit of ASEAN.

AECOM is a great opportunity for us to share new gains in knowledge, innovations, clinical experiences, and to support each other in many aspects such as academic, research or scholarships in training residents, fellowships and ophthalmic nurses. In the past AECOMs, we had excellent collaborations from our members to build ophthalmic healthcare network. Nevertheless, there is always room for growth and there is much that can be done to make our network stronger together.

Professor Narsing A. RaoChair of the Indo-China Ocular Inflammation Study Group

Dear Ophthalmology colleagues from IndoChina and Asia-Pacific region,

It gives me pleasure in welcoming you to take part in the 5th Indo-China Ocular Inflammation Study Group annual meeting. As in the past meetings I have great pleasure in organizing this meeting with Dr. Somsiri Sukhavatcharin from Bangkok and Professor Peter McCluskey from Sydney. It has been great that the past meetings were organized successfully by this group in Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand and Myanmar, the 5th Indo-China meeting was organized with focus on education in the discipline of intraocular inflammation and infections which are commonly prevalent in Indo-China. Primary goal of this meeting is developing didactic teaching sessions delivered by world renowned teachers and experts in diagnosis and treatment of ocular inflammation and infections. Since intraocular tuberculosis is a common infectious uveitis in Indo-China, a dedicated symposium covering this entity is included in the program. In addition, a gamut of non-infectious and infectious intraocular inflammations will be covered by the international experts from USA, Japan, Europe, Australia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Myanmar, Vietnam and India. This is a wonderful opportunity for ophthal-mologist gain clinical knowledge pertinent to Indo-China.

I am grateful to all the invited speakers of Indo-China Ocular Inflammation Study Group teaching program, who volunteered to take part in the teaching program. It is admirable that all these speakers being so enthusiastic in taking part and share their knowledge with others in Indo-China. The meeting could not be held without their participation and financial support from the International Ocular Inflammation Society (IOIS). The IOIS support is to assure young ophthalmologists from Indo-China to attend the annual meeting by providing them travel, registration and accommodation.

History of ASEAN Economic Community Ophthalmology Meeting (AECOM)

In 2013, AECOM (ASEAN Economic Community Ophthalmology Meeting) was established base on the concept of Thammasat eye center ophthalmologists. Associate professor Sakchai Vongkittirux was the founding president with purposeful collaboration in making the unity of ophthalmologist in Asian countries and establish the AEC Ophthalmology meeting. The AEC meeting is intended to share knowledge, researches and the advanced ophthalmologic technology. In addition, this meeting also making our strong cooperation among Asian ophthalmologists, healthcare personnel, to prepare, share and generalize the effective and up-to-date knowledge among the group in the AEC era.

The AECOM meeting is an annual meeting held by the member of AEC. A lot of Asian and international ophthalmologists have come to participate to share their knowledge and making the great opportunities, peaceful harmony and future collaboration for all of ophthalmologists in Asian countries.

History of Thammasat University

Thammasat University is one of Thailand’s most long-standing institutes of higher education. Officially established to be the national university of Thailand on 27th of June 1934, the university was originally named by founder Pridi Banomyong, World War 2 war-hero and prime minister during a time of turmoil in Thailand, as The University of Moral and Political Sciences (Mahawitthayalai Wicha Thammasat Lae KanMueang), reflecting the political fever of Thailand. The institution started as an open university, with 7,094 students endrolled in its first academic year studying law and politics. The guiding philosophy of the university was “to teach students to love and cherish democracy”. The university’s name was shortened to its present by the Revolutionary Council. Nevertheless, Thammasat University has always been involved in Thai national politics, counting most Thai political leaders among its graduates. Its original campus at Tha PhraChan was the site of the 14th October 1973 uprising and the 6th October 1976 Massacre.

In 1960, the university ended its free-entry policy and has become the first university in Thailand to require passing of national entrance examinations for admission. Thammasat today offers more than 240 academic programs in 23 different faculties and colleges located on four campuses. Over the nearly 80 years since its founding, Thammasat University has evolved from an open university for law and politics to a prestigious international university offering all levels of academic degrees in many fields and disciplines. The institution has produced more than 300,000 undergraduate and graduate students who have greatly contributed to the development and progress of Thai society and the nation. The university’s alumni consists most of all Thai Prime Ministers, leading politicians and government figures, a band of Thailand governors, Supreme Court presidents, judicial officers, and most of the city’s governors.

The university’s Bangkok Campus is in Phra Nakhon, Bangkok in close proximity to many tourist destinations. The Rangsit campus, where most undergraduate programmes are now held, is in Khlong Luang, Pathum Thani. Thammasat has smaller regional campuses in Lampang, Pattaya, Narathiwat, and Udon Thani.

Thammasat Eye Center is a renowned leading institution in Thailand. We thrive to become the Excellent Center of the country and the Asia-pacific Region. Established in 1999, Thammasat Eye Center has since developed its well-round potential in quantum steps, and has become standardized in eye patient service with highly specialized clinics equipped with innovative and efficient tools and technologies. We place emphasis on public relation and regularly promote health acknowledgement among citizens as well as providing training and development to nurses, optometrists, technicians and other medical professionals. We broadly support academic work, publications and researches to stimulate continuous knowledge transfer and progressive development. We are and institution of highly competitive minds, and we are ready to open our door to the ASEAN Economic Community.

History of National Ophthalmology Center, Lao PDR

Virtually all eye health services are delivered through the public health system, overseen by the Ministry of Health. The system is divided into provincial health departments and a comprehensive network for primary health care covering much of Lao PDR.

The National Ophthalmology Centre (NOC) is a top most of eye care services in Laos, provide treatments of referral cases from provinces around the entire country is also responsible for eye care services delivery, planning blindness prevention activities, research, training and rehabilitation. While leadership and management of the program have improved in recent years, additional resources are required to expand, manage and monitor activities more effectively.

Eye care has now been integrated into government policies. National Treatment Guidelines for health care providers at the district level include common eye treatments and guidelines for primary health care providers cover basic eye conditions (such as conjunctivitis and simple eye trauma). Systems to improve services, assure quality, assess surgical outcomes and collect accurate data need to be strengthened.

The National Ophthalmology Center (NOC) was established in 1990, it is a leading institution in Laos. We intend to move forward from a tertiary level of eye care to become the Excellent Center of eye care in the future. We place emphasis on public relations and promote health acknowledgement among citizens as well as providing training for residents and ophthalmic nurses and teaching the medical students from the University Medical Sciences in Lao PDR.

We are ready to move forward together under umbrella of AEC, TOGETHER WE STRONG!

History of Lao Ophthalmological Society

The Lao Ophthalmologists and Ophthalmic nurses Association established in

2006, during that time the number of ophthalmologists in the country was less than

twenty, for that reason we have established our organization to promote the unification,

collaboration and recognition of our profession. A decade later we have grown to

include over 50 members. To support of our growth, we have held annual conventions

to provide a medium of exchange between Doctors, Nurses and local authority’s policy

makers to discuss and agree on the nation’s policy and strategies for ophthalmic

healthcare. The Lao Ophthalmological Society has participated in AECOM since its earliest

beginnings, our deep connection between the two societies have helped us to flourish

over the years. This year, the Lao Ophthalmological Society has the honor of holding

the 4th AECOM, supported by the Thammasat University Faculty of Medicine. This

development marks an important step forwards in our history, and furthering our

collaboration with AECOM and all our neighbouring countries.

Dr. Gibran Butt

Gibran Butt is an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow in Ophthalmology at the Birmingham and

Midlands Eye Center. He completed his medical training at King's College London and an MSc in the

Biology of Vision from the Institute of Ophthalmology, UCL. Gibran has pursued academic clinical

training since graduation, completing the Academic Foundation Program in the West Midlands. He

has recently been awardeda MRC Clinical Research Training Fellowship which will commence in the

summer of 2017.

Dr. Tjahjono D. Gondhowiardjo

Tjahjono (nickname TD) is a fellow of Indonesian Academy of Science (since 2008), and has

proven as an innovative leader, when he successfully transform the scratched facilities of the

Department of Ophthalmology, University of Indonesia – Cipto Mangunkusumo National Hospital

during the economic turmoil into a well equipped ophthalmology training center (1997 - 2005) without

any government budget. Moreover, he is the spearhead of the 2000’ national ophthalmology training

curricula reform, which doubling the production of Indonesian Eye Surgeon as a response to the high

blindness rate and a low ophthalmologist to population ratio.

Within 1997-2003, he has drafting and socialized the concepts of Indonesian College of

Ophthalmology as a complement academic institution to the Indonesian Ophthalmologist Association;

as well as the accreditation of training institution and the 5 years re-certification for Ophthalmologist.

All of those concepts have been accepted by the General Assembly, and subsequently lead him in two

periods (2003-2010) as the President of the Indonesian Ophthalmologist Association; and then he moved

on for another two periods (2011-2016) as the Chairman of the Indonesian College of Ophthalmology.

He has setting up a new paradigm, that the national board exam of the Indonesian College of

Ophthalmology is a Quality Assurance for the individual members. Furthermore, in order to raising the

bar, he had opened a link to the Royal Australian New Zealand College of Ophthalmology, which started

to send their external examiner since 2013.

He was PhD co-promoter / promoter PhD in several universities in Indonesia (University of

Indonesia, Jakarta; University of Airlangga, Surabaya, University of Hasanuddin, Makasar; and University

of Andalas, Padang).

Within the Indonesian prevention of blindness activities, he was in the leading drafting team of the

Indonesian’ Vision 2020 Strategic Plan which was signs by the Indonesian Ministry of Health (2005),

and led him as the Chairman of the Indonesian Prevention of Blindness Committee (2004-2007). He is

one of the inisiator of the “Mata Hati Movement”, a “local’ non governmental organization which it’s main

activities is fund raising for charity’ cataract surgery in Indonesia. He serves as the Vice/Acting Chairman

(2005-2010) as well as the Chairman (2011-now) of the Indonesian Eye Bank.

Within the Asia Pacific region, he has had served, respectively as the Regional Secretary

(2003-2011); Congress President (2009), Asian’ coordinator for Education (2009-2011), Vice President

(2010-2012), Convernor of the Leadership Development Program (2010-2015) of the Asia Pacific Academy

of Ophthalmology. Moreover, he is founder council member of the ASEAN Association of Eye Hospital

(2005); currently he is the Corporate Development and Education Director of Jakarta Eye Center, the

leading Eye Hospital in Indonesia, and repeatedly invited as an external examiner in conjoint

Ophthalmology in Malaysia (since 2000). Since last year, he is appointed as one out of two

representative of Indonesia Ophthalmologist Association (Perdami) in the newly formed ASEAN Oph-

thalmology Society (AOS).

He has received several national and regional awards, such as Best Young Researcher in

Medicine, Indonesia Institute of Science (1994), Best Lecturer, Faculty of Medicine, University of

Indonesia (1995), Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology’ Distinguish Service Award (2004), and

Arthur Liem’ Award of Leaderships (2010); Satyalancana Wira Karya from the President of Republic

of Indonesia (2009). Recently, he has been admitted as Fellow, Academy of Asia Pacific Professors of

Ophthalmology (2014) and Member of Indonesian’ President Medical Expert Panel (2005-2010 and

Dr. Shelina Oli Mohamed

Graduated from Medical School in Science University of Malaysia in 1997. Subsequently was awarded a Public Service Department Scholarship to pursue a Masters degree in Ophthalmology and obtained the Masters in Surgery (Ophthalmology) in 2005 from National University of Malaysia. Has received the Excellent Service award in 2007.

Commenced Medical Retina and Uveitis subspecialty training in 2008 locally. Underwent further fellowship training in Uveitis in Moorfields Eye Hospital London under the supervision of Prof Susan Lightman in 2010-2011. Upon completion of training, served at Hospital Selayang and then Hospital Shah Alam, the main national tertiary referral centres for medical retina and uveitis.

Involved in the management of a variety of medical retina and uveitis patients receiving referrals from all over Malaysia. Provides outreach services in this field to other states in Malaysia. Was a founder member of the Malaysian Ocular Inflammatory Society in 2015.

Was a member of the development group for the national clinical practice guidelines for the Screening of Diabetic Retinopathy which was launched in 2011 and also the Management of Multiple Sclerosis (Diagnosis and Management of Optic Neuritis) which was launched in 2016. Was a member of the Advi-sory Board for the local practice guidelines for Management of Diabetic Macula Edema and Polypoidal Choroidal Vasculopathy.

Have given lectures locally and internationally to paramedics, general practitioners, physicians, optometrists and ophthalmologists in primary eye care courses, diabetic retinopathy, uveitis and medical retina-related topics. Has publications, presented posters and oral presentations in local and international conferences. Involved as Investigator and researcher in clinical trials related to medical retina. Professional SummaryDr Yee Yee Aung is a consultant ophthalmologist acting as Professor and Head of the Department of Ophthalmology in University of Medicine, Mandalay. She completed her undergraduate medical training at University of Medicine 1, Yangon in 1987. She was conferred the Master of Medical Science in Ophthalmology in 1997. After completeness of residency, she joined the SNEC for a year to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Edinburgh, 2001 together with the Master of Medicine, Ophthalmology (2001). Upon completion of Fellowship, she continued to work at NUH Surgeon for one & half year. Mainly under supervision of Consultants of Paediatric Ophthalmologists, mainly Dr. Sonal Far Zavandi.

She also received Dr.Med.Sc (Ophthalmology), University of Medicine 1, Yangon in January 2006 and Diploma in Medical Education, University of Public Health, Yangon in December 2014.

She is passionate about teaching and has been regularly involved in educating Ophthalmology residents, undergraduate and postgraduate students, Ophthalmic nurses and refractionists. She is also a member of the Editorial Board of the Myanmar Ophthalmology Society since 2015. In addition, she is also keenly interested in local Ophthalmic mission work and is as regular volunteer with free clinics for the needy with the country.

Ann-Marie Lobo, M.D.

Dr. Lobo completed her residency in ophthalmology and fellowship in Ocular Immunology and Uveitis

in the Harvard Medical School Department of Ophthalmology/Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.

She was on the full-time faculty in the Uveitis Service of the Department of Ophthalmology at Harvard

Medical School from 2010-2015. Dr. Lobo joined the faculty of the Department of Ophthalmology and

Visual Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago/Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary as co-director of the

Uveitis Service in September 2015.

Dr. Lobo’s clinical and research efforts are focused on the diagnosis and treatment of patients with

ocular inflammatory and infectious diseases. Her clinical interests include diagnostic testing in

infectious uveitis, pediatric uveitis, and novel treatments for ocular inflammatory disease.

Dr. Lobo has served as the principal investigator for several multi-center international clinical

trials involving the use of novel therapies for the treatment of non-infectious uveitis. Her research interests

include factors related to the development and severity of infectious uveitis, the morbidity of childhood

uveitis, and the use of biologic response modifier therapies in the treatment of uveitis.

Dr. Lobo serves on writing committees for the American Board of Ophthalmology and the

Damien C. Rodger, M.D.

Damien C. Rodger, MD, PhD, worked as a co-op intern at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory on

attitude control microsystems for unmanned space exploration while completing his Bachelor’s in

electrical engineering from Cornell University in 2000. Dr. Rodger then earned his Medical Degree

from the Keck School of Medicine of USC and his PhD in bioengineering from the California Institute of

Technology. He was voted Transitional Resident of the Year at the University of Chicago/NorthShore

Program before starting his residency in ophthalmology at the USC Department of Ophthalmology,

LAC+USC program. Dr. Rodger completed his Vitreoretinal Surgery Fellowship and was a clinical

Associate Director of the Mass. Eye and Ear Retina Service, Dr. Dean Eliott enjoys a national reputation

as a gifted vitreoretinal surgeon and is sought by colleagues for difficult surgical cases. He is especially

After receiving his medical training from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Dr. Eliott

completed his ophthalmology residency at Wilmer Eye Institute/Johns Hopkins Hospital. This was

followed by a vitreoretinal fellowship at Duke University where he was also Chief Resident and a faculty

member. Dr. Eliott then spent twelve years on the faculty at Kresge Eye Institute in Detroit where he

was Director of the Retina Service and Retina Fellowship Director. Before coming to Mass. Eye and Ear,

Dr. Eliott was Professor of Ophthalmology, Director of Clinical Affairs, and Director of Vitreoretinal

Fellowship at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine's Doheny Eye Institute in

Los Angeles.

Dr. Eliott co-directs the Diabetic Eye Disease Center of Excellence at Harvard Medical

School-a multidisciplinary collaboration among clinicians and scientists who are pooling their knowledge

and resources with the goal of advancing breakthroughs in treatment for patients with diabetic eye

disease. Additionally, he plays an important role training ophthalmology residents and fellows in the clinic

and in the operating room as Director of the Retina Fellowship and Co-Director of Mass. Eye and Ear's

Vitrectomy Course. He also is a sought after regional, national, and international speaker.

In addition, Dr. Eliott has established a focused translational research program, where he is

investigating ways to improve the diagnoses and outcomes for proliferative vitreoretinopathy; age-related

macular degeneration; diabetic macular edema; and complex vitreoretinal surgical conditions, such as

retinal detachment. As a clinical innovator and clinician scientist, Dr. Eliott is particularly interested in

implantable and sustained-release steroid devices, vision-restoring electrical devices, and stem cell

therapy. He continually receives research funding from the government and industry, and he has received

several honors, including an American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award, the Crystal

Apple Teaching Award from the Young Physicians group of the American Society of Retina Specialists,

Grace M. Richter, M.D.

Grace M. Richter, MD, MPH, graduated summa cum laude from Washington University in

St. Louis, where she majored in biochemistry and international studies. She then went to Columbia

University for her Medical Degree, as well as her Masters in Public Health. After completing her

ophthalmology residency at the University of Southern California, she served as the assistant chief of

service for ophthalmology at the Los Angeles County Medical Center. She then completed a fellowship

as the David Mays II Glaucoma Fellow at UCLA Jules Stein Eye Institute prior to returning to USC. Her

research endeavors focus on ocular epidemiology and improving glaucoma diagnostics, and she has

published and presented widely in these areas. Finally, Dr. Richter is passionate about international

ophthalmology and enjoys volunteering her time to perform and teach manual small incision extracapsular

cataract surgery in developing areas of the world.

Hiroshi Goto, MD, PhD is Professor and Chairman of Ophthalmology at Tokyo Medical

University, Japan. He is a Director, Councilor and Diploma Certification Board of the Japanese

Ophthalmology Society. He was President of the Japanese Society of Ocular Oncology from 2010 to

2014. Since 2013, he has been appointed as President of the Japanese Ocular Inflammation Society.

Hossein Ameri, M.D.

Hossein Ameri, MD, PhD, FRCSI, MRCOphth is an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the

USC Roski Eye Institute of the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California in Los

Angeles. He is also the Director of the USC Retinal Degeneration Center. Dr. Ameri graduated from

Tehran University of Medical Sciences, then served as a physician and director of health network before

moving to Ireland. He received his Ophthalmology and Vitreoretinal Surgery training in Ireland, earn-

ing FRCSI from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and MRCOphth from the Royal College of

Ophthalmologists in London. While In Ireland, he was also an official lecturer at University College Cork

and was a founding member of the Irish retinal prosthesis group. Dr. Ameri completed his internship in

general surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and moved to Texas for his Ophthal-

mology Residency training at the University of Texas Medical Branch. During his Ophthalmology Residency,

he earned a PhD in neuroscience at the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering at the University of

Texas Medical Branch. Dr. Ameri obtained additional fellowship training in vitreoretinal surgery at USC

Roski Eye Institute. Dr. Ameri's research experience include retinal prosthesis, retinal angiogenesis and

ocular ultrasound and he holds a number of U.S. patents on retinal prostheses and other devices.

Jennifer E.Thorne, M.D.

Jennifer Thorne, M.D., Ph.D., is the Cross Family Professor of Ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye

Institute, where she is also chief of the Division of Ocular Immunology. Dr. Thorne holds a joint

appointment as professor of epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

An internationally recognized and board-certified ophthalmologist, Dr. Thorne is an expert in the

evaluation and management of patients with uveitis and other related immune-mediated disorders.

Dr. Thorne also directs the Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid clinic, a multi-disciplinary specialty clinic

designed to evaluate and treat patients with conjunctival diseases.

Dr. Thorne's research interests include white dot syndromes including birdshot chorioretinitis, multifocal

choroiditis and punctate inner choroiditis. She also studies juvenile idiopathic arthritis-related uveitis and

treatment outcomes of immunosuppressive drug therapy.

Dr. Thorne received her M.D. degree from the University of Virginia and completed her

ophthalmology residency at the University of Pennsylvania's Scheie Eye Institute. She completed her

uveitis fellowship at Wilmer and completed her Ph.D. in epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg

School of Public Health.

at several national(79) and international meetings(41) in Uveitis. She has received the Indian Journal of

Ophthalmology-Gold award for the year 2009-2010, the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Travel

grant for young ophthalmologists in 2011 and the College of ophthalmologists of Hongkong (COHK) and

the Hongkong ophthalmological society (HKOIS) travel grants in 2012. She has successfully organized

many national CMEs on uveitis and was the organizing secretary of the First International Assembly

of Ocular Inflammation Society at Goa, India in 2011. She has been a part of several multicenter drug

trials in uveitis. Her areas of interest include Ocular tuberculosis, sarcoidosis and HIV related

Manabu Mochizuki, M.D.

Manabu Mochizuki, MD, PhD was born in 1947 and completed medical education at Kyushu

University School of Medicine in 1973, residency in ophthalmology at Tokyo University Hospital in

1973-74, and he became Professor & Chairman at Department of Ophthalmology, Kurume University

School of Medicine (1990-1998); Professor & Chairman, Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Science,

Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences, Tokyo Medical and Dental University (1990-presesnt).

Dr. Mochizuki is an internationally well-recognized expert in ocular inflammation, immunology, infection,

and pharmacology. He is author and co-author of over 600 scientific publications and gave many named

lectures and symposium. He is President of Japanese Ocular Inflammation Society, President of Japanese

Ocular Pharmacological Society, Council of Japan Ophthalmological Society, Chairman of International

Ocular Inflammation Society, a Gold Follow and Program Committee member of Association for Research

Manfred Zierhut, M.D.

Professor of Ophthalmology, University of Tuebingen, GermanyDr. Zierhut has degrees in both chemistry and medicine and was a resident in ophthalmology at the University of Hannover and the University of Tübingen, Germany, and at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School.

His scientific interests include clinical and experimental immunology, especially uveitis, conjunctivitis, keratitis, eye diseases caused by systemic disorders, immunological mechanisms leading to uveitis, therapy of Behçet´s Disease, allergy of the eye, and dry-eye syndromes. He has complete more than 3000 surgical procedures, including lens and corneal transplantations, glaucoma operations, operations of the eye lids, the lacrimal gland or the muscles, perforating injuries, vitrectomies, retinal surgery, enucleations, surgery of the orbita.

Dr. Zierhut was president of the International Uveitis Study Group from 2009 to 2013. He is head of the German Uveitis Patient Interest Group and a member of the International Ocular Inflammation Society, the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society, the International Behcet Group, the Society for Ophthalmo-Immunoinfectiology in Europe, and the Deutsche Ophthalmologische Gesellschaft.

He has written 130 journal articles, 65 book chapters, and 290 posters and presentations at conferences. He is the author or editor of 25 books, has given more than 850 lectures, and has been the chief organiser of 36 congresses, workshops, and meetings. Dr. Zierhut is editor in chief of Ocular Immunology and Inflammation.

Peter McCluskey is Director of the Save Sight Institute at Sydney Eye Hospital and Professor and Chair

of Ophthalmology at the University of Sydney.

Professor McCluskey is an inflammatory eye disease specialist with more than 25 years

experience in the field. His primary clinical focus is vision-threatening chronic inflammatory eye disease

and he has a large clinical practice as well as being actively involved in clinical research and clinical trials.

Peter McCluskey graduated with first class honours from the University of NSW. He completed his

ophthalmology training at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Sydney Eye Hospital. During his MD studies in

ocular immunology at UNSW, he completed a fellowship in uveitis and HIV ophthalmology at Moorfields

Eye Hospital in London in 1993-94.

As Director of the Save Sight Institute at Sydney Eye Hospital, he is responsible for an Institute

containing 11 research groups involved in both clinical and basic eye research that encompasses the

common causes of blindness such as ARMD, diabetic retinopathy, cataract and corneal disease. Additional

research groups target glaucoma, electrophysiology, genetic eye disease, uveitis and ocular cancer.

He has received distinguished service awards from APAO, RANZCO and AAO for his teaching

contributions. Most recently he has received the Mark Tso Golden Apple award from the International

Council of Ophthalmology and Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology as the outstanding teacher in

the Asia Pacific region for 2012.

Narsing A. RAO, M.D.

Dr. Rao is Professor of Ophthalmology and pathology and director of Uveitis service and Ophthalmic Pathology laboratory at USC Roski Eye Institute, University of Southern California, Los Angeles. He is the first chair holder of Stieger Vision Research Endowed chair at the Doheny Eye Institute. He was awarded medical degree from Osmania University, Hyderabad, India and completed residencies in pathology and ophthalmology at the Georgetown University, and a fellowship at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Washington, D.C.

His research endowers focus on uveitis and related ophthalmic inflammatory diseases and such work is supported by grants from National Institute of Health, Research to Prevent Blindness and Veterans Administration. He has published over 470 peer reviewed articles on ophthalmic diseases in the United States, six books and the American Registry of Pathology-AFIP fascicle on Tumors of the Eye and Ocular Adnexa. He is recipient of several awards including Lorenz Zimmerman medal from American Academy of Ophthalmology, Bietti medal from World Ophthalmology Congress and medals from International Ocular Inflammation Society, International Uveitis Study Group and teaching awards from Department of Ophthalmology, Georgetown University and University of Southern California. He delivered several named lectures at various national and international societies of intraocular inflammation, universities as visiting professor. RV Paul Chan, M.D.

R.V. Paul Chan, MD is Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary, University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). He is the Co-Director of the Vitreoretinal Fellowship and serves as Director of the Pediatric Retina and Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) Service. His clinical practice focuses on vitreoretinal surgery, with an expertise in pediatric retinal disease. Dr. Chan received his BA from the University of Pennsylvania and MD from the Temple University School of Medicine. After completing Ophthalmology residency at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Weill Cornell Medical College, he went on to a Fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Chan spent nine years on faculty at Weill Cornell Medical College, as Director of the Retina Service and Vitreoretinal Fellowship, before moving to UIC in 2015.

Dr. Chan is Vice Chair for Global Ophthalmology at UIC and is committed to global health initiatives with a focus on both surgical training and education for the diagnosis and management of adult and pediatric retinal disease. Dr. Chan's primary research interests focus on utilizing new technology and imaging techniques to better evaluate and manage pediatric retinal disease. He receives grant funding from the NIH as well as a number of charitable foundations. He is a core team member of the Imaging and Informatics for ROP (i-ROP) consortium and leads the Global Education Network for ROP (GEN-ROP), which is an international collaboration of investigators with expertise in neonatology, ophthalmology, biomedical informatics, international health, and medical education. Together, they are implementing tele-education programs aimed at addressing the growing global burden of ROP and have established clinical, teaching, and research collaborations in Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Dr. Chan also serves as a consultant for both Orbis International and Helen Keller International (HKI), and sits on the Board of Trustees for HKI.

Dr. Chan is Executive Editor of the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s (AAO) Global Ophthalmology (GO) Guide, is an assistant editor for the journal, Retina, and is on the editorial board for the Journal of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, the Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology, the Journal of VitreoRetinal Diseases, Retina Today, New Retina MD, and Ocular Surgery News. Samuel Chi-Hung Yiu, M.D.

Samuel C. Yiu, M.D., Ph.D., is an associate professor of ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute, specializing in cornea and external eye diseases, cataracts and refractive surgery (LASIK). In addition, he is a nationally and internationally recognized specialist in ocular surface diseases and ocular surface reconstruction surgery.

Dr. Yiu received his M.Sc. (applied biometry) and Ph.D. (physiology and biophysics) from the University of Southern California. He then completed a post-doctoral fellowship in lacrimal physiology at the Schepens Eye Institute at Harvard Medical School and went on to earn his M.D. from the University of Alberta in Canada. Dr. Yiu completed an internship and his ophthalmology residency at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia and a fellowship in cornea, external disease and refractive surgery at the University of Southern California’s Doheny Eye Institute. After serving as the director of Doheny’s Ocular Surface Center and co-director of Doheny’s cornea division, Dr. Yiu joined the Wilmer faculty in 2011 and spent two years as the chief of the cornea division at King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital (KKESH), Wilmer’s affiliate hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, before returning to Baltimore in 2013.

Shwu-Jiuan Sheu, M.D.

ACADEMIC POSITION: Professor Sheu is currently Chief of Ophthalmology at the Kaohsiung Veterans Hospital in Taiwan, and professor at the National Yang-Ming University and the National Defense Medical University in Taipei.

Soon-Phaik Chee, M.D.

Soon-Phaik Chee, MD, is a Professor at the National University of Singapore and Duke-National University of Singapore Graduate Medical School, Singapore. She is a Senior Consultant and heads both the Cataract Subspecialty Service and Ocular Inflammation and Immunology Service at the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC). In addition to her clinical commitments, Dr Chee is concurrently the Director of Fellowships and a member of the Strategic Planning Committee in SNEC. She also serves as group lead member of the Cataract research team at the Singapore Eye Research Institute. She obtained her Master of Medicine (Ophthalmology) at the National University of Singapore and was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow and Edinburgh and the College of Ophthalmologists, UK. She subsequently completed her fellowship in Uveitis and Oculoplastics, Lacrimal and Orbital Surgery at Moorfield’s Eye Hospital, London in 1993.

Dr Chee’s research interests in cataract include the management of complicated cataracts such as the dense posterior polar cataract, subluxated cataracts, premium intraocular lens implants and femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery. In addition to innovations in surgical techniques, she has also designed intraocular instruments which greatly augment surgeons’ abilities to overcome difficulties and improve the outcomes in these highly demanding cases.

In the field of uveitis, she has been the President of the Asia-Pacific Intraocular Inflammation Study Group (APIISG) since 2013. She is also a member of the International Uveitis Study Group, Clinical Consensus Group (Standardisation of Uveitis Nomenclature) and an International Council member of the IOIS International Council. She has published extensively on Cytomegalovirus infection of the anterior segment, Ocular Tuberculosis, Dengue Maculopathy and Vogt-Koyanagi Harada disease.

AECOM Distinguished Service Awards

AECOM Foundation supports a “Distinguished Service Awards” program, aimed towards promoting the recognition of Ophthalmologists who have dedicated themselves to Ophthalmic Healthcare in their country, the ASEAN region or to the AECOM community.

Prior to each annual AECOM event, Ophthalmologists who are keypersons for each representative ASEAN country are invited to nominate one Ophthalmologist from their country to receive our Trophy or Plaque Award of recognition. The award is presented by the founding president of AECOM at the opening ceremony of each annual AECOM event.

Objective: To determine causes and pattern as well as visual prognosis of patients with uveitis at tertiary university eye center in Bangkok, Thailand.Method: Retro-prospective study was conducted on all cases of uveitis that presented to the Uveitis Clinic at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital from August 2014 to May 2016. A complete ophthalmologic examination was performed in all cases. Ancillarys test were conducted when indicated. Standard diagnostic criteria were employed for each entity of uveitis.Results: A total of 436 subjects were evaluated. The mean age at presentation was 48.3±16.2 years, with most between 41 to 60 years (41.3%). A specific cause was found in 339 patients (77.8%). Anterior uveitis was the most common location (40.1%), followed by panuveitis (23.9%), posterior uveitis (17.4%), and intermediate uveitis (5.5%). The most frequent diagnoses were herpetic anterior uveitis (17.8%), followed by VKH (7.1%), and CMV retinitis (6.9%). At final follow-up, most cases presented with mild visual impairment (63.8%).Conclusion: A wide spectrum of uveitic disease was seen in our study. Compared with previous studies in Thailand, we found more number of specific entities, which could be explained by the use of new investigation techniques such as PCR, interferon gamma assay.

Title : Assessment of Vascular Change using Swept-Source Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography in Behcet’

Objective: To evaluate retinal vascular structural change in ocular Behcet’s using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and Fluorescein angiography (FA).Methods: An analytic cross-sectional study of 37 eyes of 21 Behcet’s uveitic patients was performed. Subfoveal retinal thickness was measured by swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). Perifoveal hypoperfusion area both superficial and deep capillary plexus were circumscribed by OCTA and FA to assess the vascular features and correlation.Results: Twenty-one patients were enrolled (Males constituted 52.4%). The best-corrected visual acuity was 20/70 (20/20-HM). The age at onset was 36.7±12.93 years old. Duration of disease was 5 years (1-25). Using OCTA, The area of hypoperfusion in superior capillary plexus (0.47±0.17 mm2) was smaller than the deep capillary plexus (1.94±3.87 mm2) significantly (p-value <0.001). Furthermore, Superior: Deep capillary plexus ratio was 0.57±0.27, had the positive coefficient correlation with poor visual acuity (95% CI -0.644, -0.015).Conclusions: OCTA is a non-invasive method to assess the hypoperfusion retinal capillary plexus. Behcet’s uveitis affects deep capillary plexus more than superficial capillary plexus. Wider deep capillary plexus correlates well with poor visual acuity.

Title : A Case Series of Syphilitic Uveitis In HIV-Infected Patients

Objective: To report three case series of bilateral syphilitic uveitis in HIV-infected patients treated in Selayang Hospital, MalaysiaMethods: Case series.Results: These case series reported syphilitic uveitis in male patients ages ranging from 23 to 32 years old and treated in Selayang Hospital, Malaysia between June 2010 and March 2011. All of them were newly diagnosed retroviral disease with high titre of VDRL serology. Their ocular manifestations were dense vitritis, panuveitis, chorioretinitis and swollen optic disc. Some of them had extraocular manifestations signs such as maculopapular rashes and genital ulcers. All patients were treated for neurosyphilis with intravenous Penicillin and responded well to the treatment with good visual outcome.Conclusion: Syphilis is one of the common infectious disease associated with HIV-infected patients. All syphilitic uveitis cases should have HIV screening and vice-versa. In all panuveitis cases, syphilis needs to be ruled out especially in high risk group. Early detection and treatment is important as syphilis can be treated with proper anti-microbial therapy.

Title : TB meningitis with ocular manifestation in immunocompetent child

Purpose: To report a case of TB meningitis with ocular manifestation in immunocompetent childMethod: case reportResult: A 12 year old girl with no medical illness, initially presented to pediatrician with complaints of prolonged fever, vomiting and headache. She also had significant weight loss, night sweat and contact with TB from her maternal side. Two days of hospitalization, she suddenly developed binocular diplopia and eye pain aggravated by eye movement. Ocular examination revealed good visual acuity of 6/9 in both eyes with normal optic nerve function. Extraocular movement showed the presence of right 3rd and 6th cranial nerve palsy. The optic disc appears to be swollen with multiple choroiditis noted in both eyes. Urgent contrasted computed tomography (CT) of brain showed no significant abnormality. She was planned for lumbar puncture. However, the following day she developed altered consciousness. Mantoux reading was 21mm. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of brain showed multiple tuberculomas scattered throughout the brain with basal meningeal enhancement and multifocal infarct. She was treated as tuberculous meningitis. She responded well to treatment and all ocular signs resolved after 3 months. Her neurological and cognitive functions had gradually improved with very minimal residual impairment.Conclusion: Childhood tubercular meningitis continues to be associated with a high frequency of neurologic sequelae and mortality. The diagnosis of tubercular meningitis can be difficult and the Ophthalmologist may play an important role in aiding the Paediatrician with early diagnosis. Early diagnosis and treatment is essential for better outcome and survival.
