Power Transmission Improvement Sector Project Java-Bali and Kalimantan, Indonesia

The increasing power demand in Indonesia has led to the

need to resolve power supply bottlenecks in selected

power substations and transmission lines in Java-Bali and

interconnect outer-island power grids in Kalimantan.

The US$175-million power transmission improvement

sector project aims to ease the bottlenecks in power supply

to major load centers through adding power transformers,

switchyard bays, indoor switchgear feeders, transmission

lines and capacitors. This will reduce adverse impacts from

power interruption caused by substation overload or low

voltage supply.

Transmission inter-connections via 326 kilometers of the

150-kilovolt transmission line between East Kalimantan

and South Kalimantan, and the construction of 150-kilovolt

substations will help realize economies of scale, provide

operational flexibility and maximize the use of resources.

AECOM is providing full project implementation consultancy

services including preparation/evaluation of sub-projects

documentation, assistance with tendering, construction

supervision, commissioning, administration, project

management and reporting.

renewable energy generating capacity by about 82

megawatts by displacing energy currently generated from

fossil fuels (about 450 gigawatt hours (GWh) annually). The

US$256-million project includes the implementation of

several mini hydro, small hydro and geothermal power

projects which will account for five to 10 percent of power

generation in remote regions.

AECOM is providing full project implementation consultancy

services, including preparation/evaluation of sub-projects for

financing approval by ADB, tender documentation, assistance

with tendering, construction supervision, commissioning,

administration, project management and reporting.

Wayang Windu Unit 2 Geothermal Power Project West Java, Indonesia

AECOM was responsible for the design, preparation of

bid documents and construction supervision of a second

turbine generator unit at the Wayang Windu steam field,

which is the largest geothermal plant in Indonesia, and

is one of the largest in the world. The US$200-million,

117-megawatt unit geothermal power project, is more than

double the plant’s output, and was completed in 2009.

The engineering services included the 117 megawatt

geothermal turbine generator unit, all necessary auxiliary

plants, the cooling tower, and the steam above-ground

pipeline system (SAGS) to connect new geothermal wells

to the turbine. We were also responsible for the integration

and extension of the plant-wide distributed control system.

AECOM delivered the project to the client within budget,

two weeks ahead of schedule and without lost time

accidents on site for the entire duration of the project, a

new labor benchmark for Indonesia. The plant generates

120 megawatt (about three megawatt more than specified)

and is currently the world’s largest single shaft geothermal

steam turbine in operation.

We are assisting with the development of a third turbine

generator unit at the Wayang Windu field.
