Dr. Venter said the UAE could play a critical role in the genome map, stressing that what matters is a dedicated work for future in continued education and fundamentals of scientific research.

He noted that the UAE, blessed with abundance of sunshine, desert, sea water and carbon dioxide, could draw its own genome map which will be very useful in producing food in a new innovative method, recycling water and waste and generating electricity.

In his view, the whole matter is deeply linked with time, education and well-trained professionals.

The lecturer said that his research institute pursued a number of exciting avenues in the burgeoning field of genomics, and use new computing and computational tools, as well as new DNA sequencing technology, to sequence the first free living organism in 1995. With this advance, the floodgates of genomics were opened.

“The last decade has been pretty successful on the technology front. The human genome project started as a $3 billion taxpayer initiative in the US with a couple more billion coming from foundations and governments

overseas, so a total of about $5 billion. Our breakthrough was that we sequenced the human genome for a mere $100 million—we had a giant building full of sequencing machines. And now that giant building is condensed to something the size of a table and that $100 million has been reduced to $1,000 or $2,000’” Dr Venter said.

“But what most people think about when it comes to genetics is personalized medicine. If we sequence your genome or my genome, what can we interpret? What can we predict for the future? What can we change? That’s in its absolute infancy. We’re at the point where we don’t need one genome or just a few genomes to interpret your genome. We need tens of thousands of genomes as a starting point, coupled with everything we can know about their physiology. It’s only when we do that giant computer search, putting all that DNA together, that we will be able to make sense in a meaningful statistical manner of what your DNA is telling you. We’re just at the start of trying to do that,” he concluded.

The lecture was followed by a Q/A sessions where attendees raised some questions about the potentials of these technologies and their impact of our future.

His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, attended on April 24, 2012 a lecture at his cultural Majlis on “New outlook of scientific research: computer sciences and biology,” delivered by Dr. J. Craig Venter, Founder and President of the J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI), a San Diego, California-based, non-profit, research organization dedicated to human, microbial, plant, synthetic and environmental genomic research.

Successfully completing a big industrial project is always the result of the hard, dedicated and orchestrated work of various groups and teams working on different fronts and parts of the project, putting pieces together and facing – and solving – challenges. Challenges constitute an integral part of the life cycle of any big project, requiring specialized teams of different disciplines to address each and every issue that face the project team. Therefore, hearing of, or reading about, a major project like the IGD, a common reader would rarely grasp, let alone appreciate, the enormous efforts put by the project managers, engineers, planners, and thousands of technicians and normal workers to make it happen. Yet, the direct contact and discussion with the project team would open one’s eyes to a success story that has its own challenges, constraints, hurdles and successes.

The IGD Project in brief The Integrated Gas Development (IGD) project is an ambitious venture that aims to transfer offshore gas taken from ADMA-OPCO’s Um Al Shaif fields, to Das Island, where ADGAS facilities would dehydrate and compress this gas and then send it through the existing 30” OAG subsea pipeline to GASCO’s facilities in Habshan for further processing and then to the national grid in Abu Dhabi and other emirates to be used as a clean energy. But to execute this ADNOC Sole Risk project, ADNOC decided to split it to several packages to be managed by ADMA-OPCO, ADGAS and GASCO. ADMA-OPCO’s roles is to build the facilities that extract raw associated gas in Um Al Shaif field and then transport

it to ADGAS new IGD facilities on Das Island through a new 46” Inlet Gas pipeline (IGL). ADGAS part of the project involves the construction of the necessary processing units to dehydrate and compress approximately 900 MMSCF of gas per day. GASCO’s part is to further process that gas, separate it and send it to Abu Dhabi and other emirates for industrial and residential use.

ChallengesSince the award of the contract to Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) in July 2009, ADGAS package of the IGD has faced daunting challenges. Some of these challenges

Industrial Modules arrive to Abu DhabiOn June 2012, the first shipment of the IGD modules arrived to Abu Dhabi Port for custom clearance before it heads to Das Island where it will embark on July 5, 2012. Meanwhile, two other shipments left the South Korean port of Ulsan heading to Abu Dhabi where they are expected to arrive on July 9 and 31 respectively.

The shipment carrying the first IGD modules (out of four shipments) had left Ulsan Port on May 31, 2012, marking the beginning of the project’s final stage. The other modules will soon follow, to be safely installed on the newly reclaimed land on Das Island.

ADGAS News has followed up this historic step in Ulsan and came up with the following coverage.

were technical. Others were regulatory and some others were related to the site itself. To grasp the dimensions of these challenges, we met Mr. Sany Zaky, IGD Project Manager (Civil & Marine). An accomplished professional who has been involved in the project from the start, Mr. Zaky shared with us the IGD’s main milestones.“Let me begin by saying that the civil and marine part of the project has taken almost half the efforts and cost of the IGD project. The main challenge was the project’s location on Das Island; a small island with limited space for extra construction which has been too consumed over the past three decades to accommodate the industrial development projects. Therefore, it was necessary to reclaim more land for the IGD project,” he started. “Land reclamation necessitated by site limitation was constrained by the OAG facilities from the east, the OAG 30” gas subsea pipeline from the north and the 10” TOTAL ABK oil subsea pipeline from the south. The limited width of the IGD site plot was confined between the 30” OAG gas line and the 10’ ABK oil line. Further constraint was necessitated by the need to have vertical concrete walls supporting and retaining the IGD plant site at +12.0 meters above sea level instead of the simpler inclined revetment slopes which would have encroached over the subsea pipelines flanking the site from north and south.Another major challenge was meeting ADNOC’s strict HSE requirements, especially concerning societal risk.

To minimize the human losses due to any emergency, these requirements stipulate that the maximum number of workers that should work at the same time and in a small place like the site on Das Island should not exceed 700. That was the reason why ADGAS and its main contractor, HHI, have opted for modularization; i.e. the building of the main structures of the plants at the contractor’s site in Korea. This modularization would first address this issue of societal risk while also minimize the time needed to execute the project, as the modules were being built at the same time of the reclamation process. Waiting till the site is ready to build the facilities on site would have required double the time for the project. Due to the nature of marine civil works, a huge quantity of special rocks had to be transported from Ras Al Khaima quarries. In addition, thousands of special large concrete blocks of 90 tons each were used to confine the IGD reclaimed site. These concrete blocks were pre-casted in a special batching plant in Ajman and were transported to Das. The need for such huge transportation of special rocks and concrete blocks required so many transportation barges that made more than 500 trips to Das Island. The total number of marine spread of construction and material barges and assisting tugs exceeded 40 numbers. Each barge or vessel of this marine spread had to comply with ADNOC’s requirements for working in oil fields and had to pass special inspection and vetting by ADNOC. Mr. Zaky elaborated on the various technical difficulties faced during the marine and civil works, including the kind

of soil on Das Island, the very heavy walls that needed to be installed underwater to support the reclaimed land and adverse weather conditions that obstruct marine operation at the unsheltered location of the IGD facilities north west Das, which is exposed to the prevailing waves and currents. These adverse weather conditions have seriously jeopardized the progress of the marine construction works specifically during winter.Further constraint to the IGD project construction was its location at the Das Island runway flight path. A special study was carried out to ensure that the high points of the IGD plant stacks as well as construction cranes do not impose any risk to the daily flight operations. Special height cranes were only operated during night when no flights were made to Das Island. This required close coordination with ADMA-OPCO and Abu Dhabi Aviation personnel. At the end of his interview, Mr. Zaky expressed his pride of excellent job performed by the project’s team, overcoming the continuous challenges in close cooperation with the main contractor, HHI, and its various sub-contractors involved, not to mention the close coordination with

ADMA-OPCO and the Petroleum Ports Authority on Das Island.

Process & UtilitiesWhile the civil and marine works were progressively being carried out, the Home Office services including detail engineering, procurement and construction of the process and utilities’ units/modules were being carried out in parallel at HHI’s yards in Ulsan. ADGAS warranted that close follow up of the above activities including fabrication activities in Korea is essential. This was accomplished by the mobilization of ADGAS Project team consisting of PMT, PMC and TPI teams. The lead man behind this side of the project was Mr. Ibrahim Aljunaibi, IGD Project Manager (Process & Utilities) who spent the last couple of years shuttling between Das Island, Abu Dhabi and Korea to ensure smooth execution and delivery of the project as planned. Himself a UAE national engineer with extensive experience in ADGAS, Mr. Aljunaibi was very keen not only on ensuring the technical integrity of the modules but also to ensure full compliance with ADGAS plan to use this project as a training platform for local employees by involving young nationals in project management and execution.“You don’t have such an opportunity to work on a mega project like this every year,” he began. “Therefore, ADGAS has made it a requisite on the main contractor to train its own staff in the project’s different disciplines throughout the execution period. The training covered Home Office activities, vendor shop equipment training and onsite training during module construction and commissioning phases. HHI assigned a Training Coordinator who developed an overall training plan which

was approved by ADGAS. HHI proceeded with the actual training sessions at every phase, after developing a system for controlling the training program and monitoring each trainee’s progress,” Mr. Aljunaibi explained.Mr. Aljunaibi went on to say, “HHI provided ADGAS engineering personnel with the following training opportunities at its Home Office in Korea:• Twelve short-term trainees for a duration of 3 months

each• Six medium-term trainees for a duration of 6 months

each• Six long-term trainees for a duration of 12 months each Vendor Shop training will also be provided by the vendor’s engineers for ADGAS Engineering and Operations personnel during the pre-commissioning and commissioning phases, covering different elements of instrumentation, control, DCS, electrical equipment and packages for ADGAS Operations, Maintenance and Engineering personnel. Training will also be covering process, mechanical, control, electrical systems, equipment and packages.”

ADGAS Senior Management Support The achievement of this IGD important milestone could not have been achieved without the close follow-up of the Company’s Senior Management, especially Mr. Bader Almohamadi, SVP (T), and his support to the IGD project managers. His personal intervention with HHI Senior Management and his networking with the main subcontractors’ senior managements were effective in project schedule recovery. His regular communication with, and support to, the project team in Korea, Abu Dhabi

and Das, were vital in steering the project in its difficult course leading to the current success.

A pledge of continuous cooperationThe celebration organized by ADGAS main contractor, (HHI), symbolizes a strong bond in the making between the two companies. Set at Ulsan shipping yard, the ceremony was attended by Mr. Ali Al Shamsi, ADNOC Strategic Planning and Coordination Director, Mr. Fahim Kazim, CEO, Mr. Bader Al Mohamadi, SVP (T), in addition to ADGAS’ IGD project managers, Mr. Aljunaibi, Mr. Zaky, Mr. Salem Al Taee, IGD HSE Team Leader, along with ADGAS office staff in Korea. From HHI, the ceremony was attended by Mr. C. J. Kang, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of HHI Offshore Division, along with scores of HHI project managers and senior officials. The arrangements made by HHI’s senior management in Ulsan Port reflected the significance given to this project milestone and to HHI’s relations with ADGAS and ADNOC in general. A celebration stand was installed, and a musical band was ready to play the national anthems of both the UAE and Korea. The place was bustling with HHI’s senior officials, and the first module onboard the ship was richly decorated, along with all the rituals of a formal sale-away. The ceremony started by the national anthems, followed by a welcoming speech by Mr. C. J. Kang, HHI’s Senior Executive Vice President & COO, who congratulates both companies for this achievement, noting the growing relations between Hyundai and ADNOC Group of Companies and its contributions to several projects for the Group.

Mr. Kang expressed his belief that this project will further cement these relations and open new horizons for cooperation between the two major world companies. Then, Mr. Ali Al Shamsi took the floor and started by saying that “in the span of a few decades, the UAE and South Korea have emerged as two of the most remarkable success stories of the global economy. Both nations have vigorously upheld and promoted free market principles and have joined the ranks of the world’s major economies in an astonishingly short period of time.He went on to stress that ADNOC had its fair share of the strategic relation between Abu Dhabi and South Korea, with major projects going on to develop upstream & downstream oil and gas facilities. Timely completion and operation of the overall IGD project is essential to the critical national infrastructure and economy of Abu Dhabi and of very significant importance to ADNOC which carries the overall responsibility for implementation. Any delay in completing one package will result in delaying the commissioning of the other 5 IGD packages. Since these other IGD packages are currently on or ahead of their progress schedule, I cannot overstress the huge importance of the timely completing the Das Island package. On his turn, Mr. Fahim Kazim, CEO, started his speech by saying, “The fact that we are here today to witness and celebrate the sail-away milestone of the first IGD Das Project modules, pays tribute to the efforts of HHI Senior Management, HHI IGD Project Management and their project teams and also to the seamless integration of ADGAS PMT/PMC team who have assisted and supported HHI at all levels. “The close cooperation and communication between HHI and ADGAS project teams as well as the senior

management of both companies from early 2010 have been vital elements of project schedule recovery and today’s success. However, today’s milestone marks the start of a new critical “fast track” phase of the project which will require even greater dedication, skill and commitment from HHI and its subcontractors together with ADGAS which will spare no effort for the success and the timely completion of the IGD project. The highest level of planning and constructability will be required in support of the greater effort needed to meet the project completion by August 2013 without sacrificing safety or quality,” the CEO went on to say.ADGAS CEO added, “Another key element to success will be engineering and procurement management support. This includes providing essential project documentation and continued major vendor administration and prompt coordination by HHI Off-shore Division. All stakeholders must recognize the fast-track nature of the upcoming phase and endeavor to ensure that no time or effort is wasted in achieving our common goals.” “Finally,” Mr. Fahim Kazim concluded, “I will be looking forward to the fourth and final sail-away milestone of IGD project modules from Ulsan which includes the outstation and sub-station modules scheduled before the end of July 2012. ADGAS Senior Management has been following up closely on the progress of the IGD project in the last few months. Both the CEO, Mr. Fahim Kazim, and Mr. Bader Al Mohamadi, SVP (T), along with the IGD project managers, had conducted a series of meetings with HHI’s senior management to ensure the timely completion and delivery of the modules.

Living by Choice not by Chance

An ADGAS engineer lectures on the human potential

The lecturer addressed two main issues in his presentation. The first one was why some people stand out from the crowd and become prominent while others remain in the shadows. The second issue was the human behavior and how it affects the life and actions of individuals.

Mr. Al Awadi said that the external human behavior is motivated by the individual’s internal thoughts and concepts. Every day, we have so many ideas passing through our minds and affecting our behavior, and

sometimes such ideas get so established that they become behaviors. Then, our behavior is just a reflection to our thoughts, and if we always feed our subconscious with positive ideas, we will end up acting positively, and vice versa.

Mr. Al Awadi also passed on the key influence of the surrounding family, friends, co-workers, previous experience and personal resilience on our success.

In coordination with the Learning & Development Department, and in presence of Dr. Saif Al Nasseri, A/ Director Business Support Directorate, and Mr. Hasan Al Marzooqi, SVP (A), Mr. Adnan Al Awadi, an ADGAS Environmental Engineer, gave an awareness session titled “Living by Choice, not by Chance,” on ADGAS Headquarters’ Auditorium on May 31, 2012.
