3 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

An Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) was deployed by Tassal for 7 months between October

2017 and May 2018, to record current flow characteristics at the Okehampton Bay lease on the east

coast of Tasmania. Marine Solutions were contracted by Tassal to analyse the data from this

deployment period.

Currents generally exhibited radial flows across all depths, with surface waters predominantly flowing to

the north-east, south-east and south-west, and bottom flowing predominately to the south-west.

Current flows were consistently radial in direction across all months monitored. On average, slightly

faster currents were recorded in surface waters compared to the rest of the water column, however,

maximum velocities reached over 77 cm s-1 at 4.5 m and 20 m depths.

4 INTRODUCTION

Marine Solutions were contracted by Tassal to analyse hydrodynamic data (current direction and

current velocity) obtained from their lease in Okehampton Bay, eastern Tasmania. Measurements were

collected by Tassal over a 7-month period between October 2017 and May 2018 via a Xylem510

Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP). Current dynamics are presented for each depth range (“bins”)

throughout the water column for each month from October to May.

5 METHODS

Hydrodynamic data, including current direction and current velocity, were collected via a Xylem510

ADCP. This unit was deployed by Tassal and remained in place for 7 months from the 26/10/2017 –

23/05/2018. The instrument was deployed in Tassal’s Okehampton lease area on the east coast of

Tasmania (Figure 1).

The raw data files were supplied to Marine Solutions for analysis and interpretation. Data was valid for

the duration of the deployment. Measurement parameters for the unit include:

• Blanking distance of 0.5 m (assumed),

• Bed depth of approximately 25 m (assumed),

• Cell width of 1.0 m,

• Reporting bin width of 2.0 m; and

• Cell count of 26.

6.1 CURRENT DYNAMICS

6.1.1 Current Flow

The data collected ranges from 0.5-2.5 m (surface; group 12) below the surface to a depth of 22.5-24.5

m (bottom; group 1). Table 1 shows the reporting groups used for analysis with the corresponding depth

bins.

Table 1 Reporting group and corresponding depth for ADCP data

Reporting Group Depth (m)

Group 12 0.5-2.5 m

Group 11 2.5-4.5 m

Group 10 4.5-6.5 m

Group 9 6.5-8.5 m

Group 8 8.5-10.5 m

Group 7 10.5-12.5 m

Group 6 12.5-14.5 m

Group 5 14.5-16.5 m

Group 4 16.5-18.5 m

Group 3 18.5-20.5 m

Group 2 20.5-22.5 m

Group 1 22.5-24.5 m

The currents throughout the water column at the ADCP site were radial, however when averaged across

all depths were flowing more so to the east or south (Figure 2). This pattern was consistent across all

depths other than bottom waters, where a predominant southwest flow was recorded (Figure 3).

Currents were predominantly flowing to the east from October to December 2017, predominantly

flowing east or south in January 2018, and southwest or north east in February and March 2018, and

east and south in April and May 2018 (Figure 4).

6.1.2 Current Velocity

Current velocities were slightly faster in surface waters and ranged from 0 cm s -1 to 60.7 cm s -1, with an

average of 8.96 cm s-1 (group 12; Table 2; Figure 5). Maximum current velocities were recorded at

depths of 4.5 m (77.9 cm s -1) and 20.5 m (77.6 cm s -1).

The highest proportion of velocity readings were between 0-10 cm s -1 across all depths, with up to 25

cm s-1 recorded at each depth (Figure 6 and Figure 7).

Cumulatively, surface waters (group 12) had a slightly greater proportion of current velocities reaching

over 10 cm s-1 than any other depth group (Figure 8).

7 CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Overall, the hydrodynamic data collected by Tassal indicates current direction was generally radial with

slightly faster current velocities in surface and bottom waters. There were no significant variations from

this pattern between the months of October 2017 and May 2018.
