BE YOURBEST

Best wishes

It’s been another busy week here in the Academy with many guests coming into school to both visit and talk to our students.

We have welcomed everyone from members of our Armed Forces to our friends from the local Primary schools for a range of activities ranging from careers talks to fund raising activities.

We have had a fantastic response to our first week’s programme of Masterclasses for our Year 11. Over 50 students have attended the extra curricular sessions that are offered by our teachers to give them specialist support and focus on their work.

Texts are sent to parents to make them aware of the sessions their child should attend. They can also see which other sessions are running and encourage their child to attend.

We will also be organising a Careers Fair at the end of January to give our Year 10 and 11 students a chance to see some of the fantastic career and further education opportunities available to them and what they would need to do to follow their chosen career path. We will be publishing full details soon so look out on the website for who will be attending.

Thank you to everyone who bought a Poppy to show their support for the people who fought so hard to give us the freedoms we enjoy today. We managed to raise £282.09 for the Royal British Legion to help today’s Service men and women, veterans and their families in their times of need.

Young Leaders Academy

Five Year 11 students: Josie Malone-Lewis, Ben George, Joel Bick, Ross Allen and myself, Eleanor Peters, have spent three Saturdays taking part in the Young Leaders Academy at Cornwall College in Camborne. This was to achieve our Level 2 Award in Leadership & Team Skills. Throughout these sessions we have learnt about different leadership styles, important team member characteristics, what makes a team function efficiently, and much more.

Each session day was split into a different section: leading your team, developing yourself as a leader, and developing the work team. Another interesting part of this course was receiving a Belbin report which determined the type of leader you are. They were compiled by taking a quiz about how we would react in different situations, as well as a questionnaire from four people who assessed our leadership ability. All these results were submitted online and then Belbin generated the report for us. We then analysed these reports, identifying areas for improvement, as well as our preferred leadership style.

I really enjoyed this course and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys leadership roles, as it has taught me how to improve and to be more confident in my leadership role.

Psychology DebateYear 11 are currently studying cognitive development and looking at the influence of Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky upon their education. Their driving question for this semester is ‘Who has had the greatest impact upon my education - Piaget or Vygotsky?’

Thursday’s lesson was spent researching the positives and negatives of both theorists. Students then had to choose which they supported and felt has had the greatest impact.

Report by Miss Dowrick

A whole class debate followed. Students were clearly passionate about their chosen practitioner but could not come to a unanimous decision about who has had the greatest impact.

Their closing statement was “It is like deciding which is more important for your future – primary OR secondary school”.

BEINSPIRED

I promised you last week that I would get in copies of Emma Pass’s dystopian novel, Acid. Well, it is in and we have three copies. Acid is the most brutal police force in history. They rule with an iron fist. They see everything. They know everything and they locked Jenna Strong away for life. She is fifteen years old and they say she murdered her parents. If you think she is going to accept her fate then you have a lot to learn about dystopian heroines.

Book Reviews

My Sister Lives on the Mantelpiece by Annabel Pitcher is a brilliant read. It is thought provoking, sad, funny and ultimately uplifting; like another of my favourites: Wonder. If you’ve read Wonder and loved it then you should come and grab this from the library. We have five copies, which arrived just yesterday.

Ten-year old Jamie lives with his elder sister Jasmine, his dad and Roger the cat. His sister, Rose, lives on the mantelpiece. And that is about as much as I am prepared to tell you!

Midnight

This tragic story is about a lonely girl wishing for a friend but when she finds one at last things might not be as they seem. She wishes that she could meet her hero Casper Dream. Maybe, just maybe, he might be able to put things right.

Join her on her desperate life story trying to find something that will make her and her family finally happy.

I recommend this book for Year 7s and 8s.

Report by Ruby Dylan7 Red

You will find Midnight by Jacqueline Wilson in the yellow section of the library. It has a ZPD number of 4.5.

BEINSPIRED

7 Red still dominate the team table and the reason is no surprise. They are working together as a team and everyone is contributing to their great result. Every student in 7 Red has taken an Accelerated Reader quiz on at least two books since September, which is what it is all about.

There are some really prolific readers in 7 Red who are devouring all the copies of Wimpy Kid we have in the library as well as the David Walliams and Jacqueline Wilson novels. Holly Davies has achieved 85% or more on 17 Jeff Kinney and Jacqueline Wilson books, which is brilliant. Ruby Dylan can even top that with an 85% pass rate on twenty-four quizzes with Walliams and Wilson her favourite writers so far.

Jacob Lake has read Veronica Roth’s Divergent and Insurgent since starting at Mounts Bay and scored 100% in both. Joe Manser has enjoyed all the novels in Christopher Paolini’s Inheritance cycle: Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr and Inheritance and scored 100% on all of these quizzes.

Well done all, but it’s not over yet. The rest of you might be able to catch them.

Penlee Takeover

On 21st November, Penlee Museum was taken over for an evening of 40s themed music, dance, art and photography by a team of MBA Silver Arts Awards students.

During the day, a group of keen, talented Year 7 artists, photographers and dancers were taken down to the museum where they were able to use the inspirational artwork of Leonard Fuller to create their own work working with our Year 9 leaders.

During the evening, there was a fantastic atmosphere with many of the performers and organisers in 1940s fashion which made the theme of the event stand out. The music was provided with performances from the jazz band and a range of talented students from all year groups at Mounts Bay. The dancers performed in the upstairs gallery through the evening, audience were invited to dress up 50s style for portraits in the photo-booth, and all the artwork created during the day was exhibited in the main gallery.

It was a great event and we are already looking forward to taking part again next year.

On Tuesday 25th November the under 16 Hockey team went to Truro for the County Championships. We had three games in our group and our first game was an easy 8-0 win against Bude. Then we played Richard Lander and beat them 4-0. Next we met Truro School and anticipated a hard game, but the Truro defence could not handle a 50 yard aerial pass from Kieran Bowden to set up Joel Bick for the opening goal inside 1 minute. The second goal was a good run from Kieran which he scored after beating a few players. The final goal was scored by Morgan Holman following some good play from Henry Hocking.

After winning all of our games we went through as group winners and had to play Penair and won with a comfortable 4-0 scoreline.

We were then in the final and we had to play Truro again. This game was a lot closer than the last and the Mounts Bay defence of Isaac Blackbourn, Henry Nowell, Dom Willcox and Will Harbot were strong and managed to frustrate Truro. Max Caddy controlled the game well both in defence and attack. The game finished in a draw and it went to penalty flicks. It took a lot of courage to step up and take the penalties. Goal keeper Tyler Tonkin was superb saving 3 penalties and Mounts Bay move forward to the regional finals as the new County Champions!

Over the day Mounts Bay only conceded one goal in open play, and that was lucky to find its way into the goal, due to superb defence and goal keeping.

At half time the MBA students did a lap of the ground soaking up all the cheers from the crowd. A fantastic day was had by all and some of the Year 7s mentioned it was inspiring. We must have been a good luck charm as Exeter recorded a fine win over London Wasps with former MBA England star Jack Nowell scoring two tries!

Exeter Chiefs Visit

On Saturday 22nd November we took 28 Year 7 students to the home of Premiership Rugby side Exeter Chiefs. We set off nice and early ready for a training session at 10 am. This was taken by players from Exeter and one of them was the current England player Tom Johnson! Our own local hero Luke Cowan-Dickie also took the time to sign autographs.

During the morning the students were given a tour of the ground and a 'behind the scenes' look at the ice baths, changing rooms and fitness areas. This was fascinating and the students learnt that there was a lot of detail into preparing for a match. The boys were then lucky enough to make the guard of honour as the players ran onto the pitch for the match in front over 10,000 fans.

On Thursday the Year 9 Football team played in the 5th round of the National Cup competition, the furthest a MBA team has ever been, against Exmouth School from Devon.

It was a big occasion and many students were allowed out of lesson to come along and watch the biggest game in the school’s history.

In the first half it was a very tight effort resulting in a fantastic goal from Mawgan Osborne and Archie Vingo. However, Exmouth had a star player who proved to much for the MBA team. ‘Sparks’ was his name - remember it! Sometime in the future you may well be able to recount your experience of watching him on the 3G on a cold lunchtime in November when he was still at school!

In the end the 5-1 result was a fair result. The MBA team put up a tremendous fight. Well done to all and we look forward to the challenge of the Cornwall Cup after Christmas.

BECHARITABLE

On Thursday Mounts Bay hosted a fantastic event for local primary school children who have been learning about 'charity'. In groups the children had chosen a charity to support, researched it thoroughly and created their own display materials to encourage Mounts Bay students and staff to donate.

Penwith Pounds

The Mayor of Penzance, Councillor David Nebesnuick, visited the event and spent time talking to all the groups about their charities. He said, “I think it’s a really excellent exhibition and it’s good to see different Primary Schools committed to donating to charities. The pupils were very knowledgeable and showed real commitment to their own local community and wider communities.”

Ruby, from St Levan School’s Guide Dogs for the Blind stall said, “I’m happy that we’ve supported this charity because a lot of people go blind and this money helps them in their lives.”

This collaborative work is part of our bid to become a Centre of Excellence for Financial Education. Schools taking part were St Maddern's, Nancledra, St Levan,St Mary's C of E School and Trythall.
