Lydia Feasey, winner of the Institution of

Engineering and Technology’s (IET)

Apprentice of the Year prize.

The prize is part of the new set of awardswhich seek to recognise the best and thebrightest apprentices and technicians.

Lydia is now a Mechanical Technician at theCulham Centre for Fusion Energy, andcompleted her apprenticeship at the JointEuropean Torus, which is a Fusion Researchproject also based at the Culham Centre forFusion Energy near Abingdon.

The four-year training programme is based atCulham and at a local college. This scheme isdesigned to develop technical and academicabilities and personal qualities.

The joint European Torus site is largely beingused for material testing for a new generationof machines. In 2010-11 a new beryllium, tungsten and Inconel wall was installed intothe site as a replacement for the Carbon FibreComposite tiles. The aim of this was to look athow the materials behaved in the extremeconditions inside the site. Last year, particularparts of this needed to be removed for furtheranalysis, and Lydia was asked to managemoving these delicate parts.

She said: “The parts we were moving wereincredibly fragile, so it was important thatnothing was moved or disturbed, as this wouldhave affected the project’s results. Throughoutthe process, I have been required to makeimportant decisions, communicate withpeople at all levels, manage people andprojects, as well as monitor processes that I

had implemented – I graduated from myapprenticeship in September and I know thatI’ll re-use all that I’ve learnt during thisintervention.”

Before completing a National Certificate inMechanical Engineering, Lydia did theFoundation Degree in Mechanical Engineeringat Abingdon and Witney College.

“At GCSE I didn’t know what I wanted to do. Ienjoyed graphics and putting things togetherand a teacher recommended I do ProductDesign at A Level. I really enjoyed the coursebut knew I didn’t want to go on to university. My Dad is an electrician and suggested that Ithink about doing an apprenticeship. I knew Iwanted to start earning money and gainpractical experience through work, so I appliedto for the CCFE Advanced ApprenticeshipScheme.

“It is a great way for young people to get into atechnical career in engineering,” said Lydia.

The cost of Higher Educationqualifications vary depending on whichcourse you are interested in.

The cost of Foundation Degrees andHonours Degrees in 2014/15 is £6,120per annum for full time study. You canapply for a tuition fee loan to spread thecost of the fees for these courses.
