Hi nobles, ladies and other Reporter readers. By the time

you read this more than half of thesummer of 2007 will be over andyou will have heard virtually noth-ing from the Chaplain’s Cornerabout Independence Day... as inprevious years. Therefore my Re-porter item this month will dealwith the Fourth of July and will bebrief and to the point.

Because of how our summerShrine schedule is arranged, ithardly ever seems totally appro-priate to deal with a subject fromlast month’s calendar. But, prima-rily because of the circumstancesin our world as well as in our coun-

try, it seems fitting to use thiscolumn this month to deal with avery salient phrase in our Pledgeof Allegiance... “One Nation UnderGod!”

Those four words have beenscrutinized and even hotly debatedas the statesmen... and others... ofour country have mulled over thetrue meanings of “freedom.” I’mnot going to belabor the point be-cause, in my opinion, it’s a donedeal, and a poem I found by MichaelD. Nalley says it the way I’d like itsaid. Interestingly enough, thispoem is titled, One Nation UnderGod.

So mote it be.

“The prayers of our great forefathers are now sharedBy descendants of the independence they declared.

A birth of a nation, brought by revolution, formed the federal laws in the constitution.

Remembering that day still causes us to applaudThe turmoil that led to one nation under God;

Beneath the stars and stripes the colors spoke so loudAs Francis Scott Key wrote lyrics to make us proud.

Divided we fall, but you know united we stand!Maybe some day war will be forever banned.

United under God, may we answer His holy Call?To share His peace, with liberty and justice for all!”

God Bless America!

I consider myself somewhatplugged in to Sahib’s happen-

ings, being the editor and Web-master. I have always known thatcommunications is important to thesuccess of our organizations, andmost of the time have made a seri-ous effort to ferret out news that Ithought the grassroots of our mem-bership would be interested inknowing.

In the past, one of the issues Iusually tried to ‘report’ on was thelegislative offerings to the Impe-rial Sessions and the Grand LodgeSessions, but I have to tell you I’mtired of trying to ‘ferret out’ this

stuff. My peeve is, why don’t theseorganizations try to make it easyfor us to know what is being con-sidered on the Imperial Call eachyear, and what Grand Lodge Reso-lutions are being presented eachyear? Each year I would ‘beg’ some-one in leadership to help me gainaccess to these documents so I couldpass them on to you, but you and Iare just do not have the proper‘rights’ to this stuff, only the eliteupper-leadership has access. If theCall to the Imperial Session waspresented this year at Sahib, itmust have been at a Thursday lun-

Potentate’sNotes

Hi everybody,

Donna and I are getting emails and cards from nobles and their ladies travel-ing all around the country and yes even the world. For instance: Art andWendy Littman bumped into George and Dottie Clary along with Tom and JeanCourtney aboard a ship on a Baltic cruise. Then Bill and Lucy Athas ran intoScott and Delores Macauley while roaming about in the north. I think it isgreat to see nobles and their ladies out traveling, enjoying life and visiting withother nobles a long way from Sahib. Drive safe and when you return, we’llswap stories. Donna and I also did a little traveling we went out to the ImperialSession in Anaheim CA, Then up to our mountain hideaway for a little R&R.It’s great therapy to get out and travel, then it’s always nice to get back home, into your comfortable routine.

The Imperial Session was good and Sahib was well represented by the entiredivan that will be reporting to you on all activities including by-law changes.

I cannot thank you enough for all, and there were many, who answered my callfor help with Sahib’s financial difficulties. We are still not in the clear but inmuch better shape now than when I asked earlier for your support. With outhesitation the clubs, units and a few nobles personally dug deep to supportSahib. Additional donations are still coming in, as some were unable to respondimmediately for many reasons.

We started the year with the fence along Circus Blvd. as our major project thenquickly had to switch priorities. The donations we received earlier for thatproject are being held in escrow as we plan on getting back to the fence in thefall.

Enjoy the summer, family and your health.

Yours in the Faith,

Dale La Bell, Potentate

Mid-year is just sneaking by and your divan ispreparing for our trips west to attend the Impe-

rial Session in Anaheim California. I lived in Cy-press, which is next door to Anaheim for almost aquarter century. Cypress is seven miles due west ofDisneyland geographically, so you might say the arearepresents old familiar territory. Naturally thingshave a tendency to change overnight, so as a practicalmatter I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that I haveforgotten the whole seven miles. We will see.

My kids and grandkids (who are now also Jackie’skids and grandkids) are still in the area and we arelooking forward to the opportunity to see them again.Jackie and I are going to take an extra week and getre-acquainted with them. So we are planning this asa fun trip, not just a business trip.

On the home front, we have just completed ourFifties Night at Sahib. From the feedback I havegotten, those who attended had a fun evening of

music and dancing with the John & Whit Duo. Therewere only sixty-four tickets sold – not quite enough toturn a nice profit – too bad we no longer are gettingthe support we need from the nobility. We recognizethat this is the low season, but we keep trying! Manythanks to those who helped make this the fun eveningthat it was: Linda Glendinning with the decorations,Tom and Kay Millaway with ticket sales at the door, and Marylou Ellis at the box office. Marylou also rana fifties trivia contest. By the way, Marylou’s triviacontest was a big hit; it brought back memories of thefifties, and everyone participated.

Here’s an update on Sahib’s twenty-fifth birthdayyear celebration. This will be a two-day affair to beheld Saturday and Sunday October 27-28. We areplanning a jazz show with Betty Comora and herRagtime Rascals Saturday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.;and our 25th Anniversary picnic will be held on

. . .continued on page 38

The summer seems to be moving along very fast. Here it is time for the August Reporter already.

Where has the time gone?In July, the Imperial Session for 2007 was held in

Anaheim, California. Your entire elected Divan andyour 2nd Ceremonial Master were in attendance. Myreport on this Imperial Session will be found in thisReporter issue on page 1. The first two weeks of Julyis when the temple is closed except for maintenancework and general cleanup of the building. This yearwe continued with Bingo on the Tuesdays of the shutdown. It is hoped that we can run Bingo every Tues-day all year long. Everyone who attends our Bingosessions seems to like our facility and the friendli-

ness of our people. As they tell neighbors and friendsabout our Bingo games, the attendance should grow.

Nobles, we really need for you to come to ourShrine for dinner, and bring a friend. The crowdshave begun to decline, and we need your support tokeep our restaurant in operation. The Wednesdayand Friday night dinners have a good selection ofentrees, and there should be something deliciousavailable for everyone. If you would come, even oncea month, it would be a great help. Almost everyonegoes out to eat more than once a month, so why notplan on coming to Sahib one night? We are proud ofour restaurant; and very few Shrines now have a

Nobles, half of 2007 is already behind us! Timegoes by so fast. The second half will continue at

the same pace.Your Sahib membership chairman and all the

membership committees are now in full swing. OurJuly kickoff was a success. The Shrine of NorthAmerica is down to 393,000 Nobles. We have contin-ued to decline by approximately 20,000 per year.

Imperial Assistant Rabban George Mitchellshowed us a graph showing that in 1985 there were950,000 Nobles in North America! As mentioned abovein 2007 we have 393,000. He also projected what itcould look like in 2025. The projected Membership in2025 will be 139,000 if things continue as they have.

These are pretty alarming statistics. For elevenyears, Imperial has made a tremendous effort to stopthe decline. We have attended yearly seminars to

learn how to attract new nobles. So far no plan hasworked.

The most positive information was the number oftemples that actually created more nobles then theylost. There were approximately 30 that had a mem-bership gain in 2006. Those potentates were appro-priately recognized by Imperial Sir Nick Thomas, andtheir names were entered into the Membership HallOf Fame.

My question is if they can do it, why can’t we atSahib. We have so many devoted nobles that work forthe best interests of our temple.

Our Illustrious Sir Dale is totally committed tothe membership plan in effect at Sahib. You will behearing about our plan at unit head and club meet-ings this month.

DIRECTOR OF CLUBSTBA

Gulf Shrine Clubby Robert “Bob” Riegel, President

In the June issue of the Reporter, I said we wouldnot have an article for a while because we would be

dark during the months of June through August; I didnot think there would be anything to write about;that was a mistake on my part.

As previously reported, our club made an offer tomatch any and all donations made by any club, unitor individual totaling up to $5,000. The only stipula-tion was that the donation be made to Sahib with “nostrings attached,” as to how it was to be used. It wasto be left up to the potentate and the divan to deter-mine where the need was the greatest.

At a Thursday luncheon in June, donations werereceived to reach the $5000 target amount. Accord-ingly, meeting our commitment, Gulf Shrine Clubmatched that total with a $5000 donation, for a totalof $10,000. Adding this $10,000 to the $10,000 GulfShrine Club donated to Sahib earlier this year makesa grand total of $20,000 Gulf SC generated for ourtemple’s needs. This is quite an achievement for aclub with fewer than 80 members. Each and every oneof the members of Gulf SC has a right to be proud ofthis achievement. It will help alleviate the financialburdens that confronted our temple and which were

TheHillbilly Gals raised $2,000, along with the HillbillyGuys matching it, donating a total of $4,000 to theShriners Hospital, to help cover expenses to send25 children to camp for a week at Camp Care-A-Lot.The camp, owned by the Rotary Club of Brandon, sponsors children with special needs. Fourteen Hill-billies (of which four were Clowns) went to camp onJune 11 to visit the facility, all of the children, excepttwo, loved the clowns; then as the day progressed, thetwo children warmed-up to the clowns, and had funwith them the rest of the day.

The day started with swimming in the pool, thenplaying games in the library, and the clowns per-formed for the children. We had a nice picnic lunchwith the children, then on to the playground, withslides, jungle gym, swings and specially designedswings for wheelchair patients. Our day concludedwith arts and crafts, helping the children make brace-lets, and painting. I am not sure who had more fun,the Hillbillies and Clowns, or the kids!

The 2007 Okeechobee Days is September 14 and15. Many of the Hillbillies are making reservations atthe Pier II Resort, where we have blocked off anumber of rooms with a special discounted rate.Make your reservations soon, by calling 1-800-874-3744 or 1-863-763-8003, and be sure to mention youare with the Sahib Hillbilly Shrine Club, to get ourspecial room rate.

First off I must apologize to my good friend BenPfeiffer for not mentioning his name in respect to

the Motor Corps Booze Wagon. Ben was totally re-sponsible for the idea of the booze wagon. He sug-gested the idea to the membership in 2005. The ideaman always gets the assignment. Ben carried out hisassignment with the most dedicated work that hadbeen seen by the Motor Corps to date. His initial workshowed the Motor Corps how to have a successfulproject that produced the much-needed funds to sendto the Shriners Hospital for Children. We as mem-bers of the Sahib Motor Corps are in Ben’s debt for hisgreat idea. This year we collected over $4,000 fromthe sale of tickets for the booze wagon. Again manythanks to you Ben, we all appreciate your participa-tion in our Sahib Motor Corps activities.

Memorial Day Parade was attended by Snowman,Speed Triple, Policy Man and Swamp Thing. After

the parade we went to the Military School on OrangeAvenue to celebrate Memorial Day with the school.

EVERYONE PLEASE TAKE NOTICE! The MotorCorps is again taking the place of the HillbilliesThursday Night Party starting the 3rd Thursday inJuly through the month of August. Yep! It’s calledBIKERBILLY HO DOWN. Stop by and see how theMotor Corps getter-done!

On June 16 Egypt Motor Corps had its SummerFling and some of the more stout members of thegreat Sahib Motor Corps invaded the Egypt Castleand had some fun; as of this writing Snowman, Policyman and Swamp Thing and their ladies planned toattend.

We are pleased to report that our informal discussions on possible merger options continue with

Englewood Shrine Club! At Englewood’s invitation, our nobles and ladies J.D. and Phyllis Copher, P.W.and Bea Towsley, plus your Scribe and Kerry VanFleet joined their pre-baseball game picnic at theCharlotte County Sports Park. Although the local“Redfish” lost 2 to 8 to the Bradenton “Juicers” weenjoyed each others’ company, got to know each otherbetter, and discussed more joint ventures. As a re-sult, Art and Lady Roberta Gioacchini, and PetePapazian and lady friend Trudy Hammer joined 18 ofour nobles and ladies at the May Mixer at the OldeWorld Restaurant in North Port.

Interestingly enough, now that J.D. and LadyPhyllis have declared their continued North Portresidency over the summer, surprise, surprise! — ourClub “Membership Enhancement Program” will nowcontinue over the summer at our informal monthlysuppers and our every Tuesday morning breakfastsat the Olde World. Billed to start at 8:00 a.m., if youarrive after 7:30 a.m., you’re considered late for allthe light-hearted banter. Recapping the circus and the family picnic, thisreporter’s opinion was both events were well orga-nized, and Charles Hamilton, Circus chairman, did asuperb job.

Provost Guardby Ted Clavey

The Provost Guard did an excellent job parkingthe buses. Jim Yeo and Don Vokes and the rest of thecrew also did a great job.

As for the family picnic and Bingo, we definitelyneed more help in parking cars etc. For other activi-ties we would like anyone with ideas; that wouldinclude the ladies.

New members of the Shrine are welcomed to jointhe Provost Guard, if interested please contact JimYeo at 941-925-8554.

New nobles attended a special June meeting of theSheikS and had plenty of questions for Senior

Advisor Gerry Goacher. They each received a copy of‘An Introduction to Units and Clubs’, which wascompiled by the SheikS. The new nobles in atten-dance included a Past Master and many active mem-bers of different Blue Lodges. Advisor Goacher fieldedquestions about Sahib’s history, as well as the oppor-tunities that are available to the new nobles and theirladies.

At the club/unit head meeting, many ideas andsuggestions were discussed on ways to make the new

nobles feel welcome and get them involved in theShrine’s activities and fellowship. The Sahib Hill-billy Club extended an invitation to the new nobles tojoin them at the 2007 Okeechobee Days celebrationon September 14 and 15 and the Mariners offered aboat ride later this summer. The Model ‘T’s offered todisplay and demonstrate one of their parade vehiclesat an upcoming SheikS meeting. The SheikS areexcited to be a part of the newly formed MembershipCommittee and we’re looking forward to a productiveyear ahead.

NotPresent

Since 1996, Shriners Hospitals for Children

and the American Academy of Pediat-

rics (AAP) have partnered to increase

access to medical homes for all chil-

dren and youth, especially those with special

health care needs.

What Is a Medical Home?

A medical home is

not a building, house or

hospital, but rather an

approach to providing

comprehensive primary

care.

In a medical home,

a primary care provider

works in partnership with

the family to assure medi-

cal and non-medical

needs of the child are

identified and addressed.

The primary care provider helps the family

access specialty care, educational resources

and other services that are important to the

overall health and well-being of the

child and family.

Shriners Hospitals for Children and

the AAP support the medical home

as the best practice to ensure that

children and youth receive the high-

est quality care.

In the medical home environment, Shriners

Hospitals’ specialty care physicians work in

collaboration with primary

care providers and patients’

families to ensure acces-

sible, comprehensive and

coordinated care.

About the Partnership

In 2004, the partnership broadened to

include direct collaboration between Shri-

ners Hospitals and primary care providers

to provide better coordination of care. A

pilot project was launched at the Shriners

Hospitals for Children—Chicago in 2006. This

pilot program aimed to not only identify and

improve communication between providers

at Chicago hospital and referring primary

care providers, but also

to identify promising

strategies that might

enhance coordinated

care at other Shriners

Hospitals. Anticipated

benefits to this proj-

ect include: increased

access to a medical

home for children and

youth with special health

care needs, potential

cost savings, patient

and primary care pro-

vider satisfaction, and

enhanced quality of

patient care.

Partnership ExpansionIn 2007, the project has expanded to six

Shriners Hospitals using a collabora-

tive learning approach. This phase will

determine how systematic changes

appropriate for each hospital can

be made to enhance communica-

tion and facilitate co-management

between specialty and primary care

providers. The six hospitals are located in Bos-

ton, Greenville, Houston, Minneapolis, Spo-

kane and Tampa.

Each hospital has formed

an improvement team,

conducted a needs assess-

ment and developed goals

and objectives for their 2007

activities. The hospitals will

be involved in a learning

collaborative throughout the year as they

implement their initiatives at their institutions.

The project will eventually be expanded to

all 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children across

the country.

Shriners Hospitals to ExpandE-mail CommunicationsFrom the Corporate Office of Development and Donor Relations

As part of our efforts to expand communications with Shriners Hospitals for Children supporters, thedevelopment department has recently gone through a process of acquiring e-mail addresses of currenthospital donors. Before e-mail addresses are added toour list, each donor was sent an e-mail requesting theirpermission to communicate with them via e-mail.

“This will allow us to reach out to more of our donors toshare with them the difference their support makes in thelives of the children we treat,” said Corporate Director ofDevelopment Edgar McGonigal, P.P. “And as we move tomore customized content on our Web site and in our e-mails, each donor will be able to receive informationtailored to their particular interests.”

Reaching oout tto oothers aand ccultivating rrelationships

As with our direct mail program, the main goals of thiseffort are to: Expand our reach to external donors and Increase communication with all who support thehospitals with financial donations.

Members of the fraternity may be on the list if they aredonors, but the fraternal mailing list (which ismaintained completely separate from our donordatabase) was not used in this effort.

Do yyou wwant tto rreceive ccommunications ffrom uus?

If you did not receive this “request for permission”e-mail and you do not currently receive our e-newsletter, Dream Partner e-news, you can go directlyto the “How You Can Help” section of the Web site atwww.donate2shc.org to sign up. This e-mail list iscompletely separate from the fraternity, so choosing tosubscribe or unsubscribe will not affect any fraternalcommunications you may receive.

If you have any questions about this process or how it works, please call the Corporate Office ofDevelopment at Shriners International Headquarters at (800) 241-4438.

An e-mail like the one above was to sentdonors, requesting their permission tocommunicate with them via e-mail.

“This will allow us to reach out to

more of our donors to share with

them the difference their support

makes in the lives of the children

we treat.” – Corporate Director of

Development Edgar McGonigal, P.P.

Sahib Shrine still has newspaper and aluminum cancollection trailers available for use! These are located atthe rear of our parking lot.

In the past we have had these containers filled a coupleof times a month. The usage has diminished consider-ably, and as a result, our income has also declined. Howmuch trouble is it to drop off your paper and cans whenyou come to lunch or visit the Shrine?

was impressive as colors were presentedand the national anthems of the fourcountries were sung. Welcomingacknowledgements were received andbest wishes for a successful session weregiven.

The Shrine Market Place was openedfor business and browsing. Visitingnobles and guests were able to walk upand down aisles where all types of Ma-sonic memorabilia, clothing, jewelry, fundraising idea booths and many otherdisplays. This exhibit hall remained openthroughout all the sessions.

Daily Imperial work sessions werethe order of business for the attendingImperial Representatives and attendingnobles. The “Call” for this 133rd sessionhad a total of 11 items to be broughtbefore the representatives for consider-ation. Many of the “Call” items wereterritorial or jurisdictional in nature.Very little discussion from the floor arosefrom these items and they were easilyresolved and passed.

Some of the “call” items that might beof interest to our nobility are as follows:

Item #1 on the “Call” would bring theImperial Bylaws into conformity withthe language utilized by accountants, and make the Imperial Bylaws consis-tent with generally accepted accountingprincipal language. This was approved.

Items #2 on the “Call” was to improvemembership by providing a system for theestablishment of new temples under dis-pensation in areas outside the UnitedStates of America, Canada, the Republic ofPanama and Mexico. This was approved.

Item #3 on the “Call”, if approved, would eliminate the current differencesset forth in Section 332.6 for the creationof life and perpetual memberships andcreate one flexible standard which wouldbe utilized by all temples for creating lifememberships. This item was approved.

The remaining items on the “Call,”except for one, Item #11, were pertainingto permissive and territorial mattersbetween individual Shrine temples andterritorial associations. These all passed.

Item #11 on the “Call” pertained tothe Colorado Corporation, which is theShriners Hospitals for Children. Thisitem resulted in some pretty heated de-bate from the floor. If passed, it wouldauthorize the building of a new ShrinersHospital for Children in London, Ontarioand upon its completion the closing ofthe existing hospital in Montreal, Que-

bec. This resolution failed to pass. The election of the 2007-2008 Impe-

rial Officers was routine, and all currentmoving divan members advanced oneposition. Ill. Sir Gary Bergenske, PastPotentate of Bahia Shriners, was electedas the new Imperial Outer Guard, andstarted on his 14-year journey to becom-ing a future Imperial Potentate.

Reports were read to the assembledrepresentatives and nobles from variousImperial committees and departments. The membership report was very good, and did once more emphasize, the impor-tance of member retention. More noblescontinue to “go out the back door,” thanare created. The new Imperial mailingprogram on membership and retentionhas been very well received.

The Shriner’s Imperial Parade washeld on the 3rd of July, starting at 9:00a.m. This was an early start time, butnecessary due to the heat in SouthernCalifornia. The parade featured unitsnot only from the United States, but alsofrom Canada, Mexico and Panama. Theparade was much shorter this year, butstill very impressive.

Wednesday was another full day fornobles and their ladies. It all began at 9:00a.m. when we had the Imperial Pageantfor the incoming Imperial Potentate. Thisincluded a video presentation of the lifeand family of the Imperial Potentate-elect,Bernard Lemieux, M.D., from ZenobiaShrine in Toledo, Ohio. He next introducedhis family, personal friends and fellownobles of Zenobia Shrine. After a break forlunch, the Imperial Session resumed. At3:00 p.m., the ladies rejoined us for thePublic Relations Report and the HospitalsReport. During the Public Relations Re-port, the Imperial Potentates’ Awards ofMerit were presented. The Imperial Po-tentates Awards of Merit this year went tothree very deserving nobles. They were Ill.Sirs Bill Hooper from Egypt Shriners,Howard McHenry and Bill Selsam. Both patients appeared on stage atthe end of the video tape presentation.Their families were introduced, and alongwith their children, thanked the Shriner’sfor making it possible for them to lead amore normal life.

That evening was the banquet for out-going Imperial Potentate Nick Thomas.Following the banquet. a wonderful con-cert by Noble Mel Tellis was held in thearena.

Thursday was the final day of thisImperial Session. There was a businesssession in the morning at which timeImperial Sir Bernard Lemieux, M.D., andthe elected Imperial Officers were in-stalled. The Imperial Session for 2007-2008 will be held in St Louis.

Seeing my mother sitting in her wheel-chair across the room, I made my way towhere she was. I could tell that she wasinterested in what was going on, but notoverly excited. Handing the balloon flowerto her that I had made, I said, “Heremom, this is for you!” As recognitiondawned on her, I saw the familiar sparklereturn to her eyes as a huge smile spreadacross her face. A tear fell from my eye—my mother was happy again; my motherwas back.

As we were leaving, I knelt down tohold her hand and assure her that Iwould be back. With a gleam in her eyes, she turned to the lady next to her andsaid, “This clown right here with thepurple hair—that’s my son!” You can betthat I walked on air for the rest of theday. From then on, whenever we had a“gig,” I always tried to make it a point tostop in for a visit with her while still incostume.

My mother has since passed, but hersmile, as well as the smile of many others, makes it all worthwhile. The children, theyoung and not so young, are what being aclown is all about. Now, whenever a childlooks up at me, I see my mother’s reflec-tion; I see her smile! And when that childasks for a “clown hug,” you had betterbelieve that she will get one.

Now, I am a clown for the “children,”not just my mother.

Gentlemen, this is why I am a clown…Editor’s Note: Rod Bornefeld is the

Sunday. Planning continues under theleadership of Jim Jensen (Director ofClubs), and Jim Smith (Unit President).

Reporter readers may already havenoticed that so far, several of our Thurs-day luncheon programs have featuredpast potentates who have shared some oftheir experiences during the earlier daysof Sahib.

We are looking forward to continuinga festive temple birthday year!

restaurant operation. Let’s keep oursgoing!

August is a very slow month for Sahib. There is the Birthday/Anniversary Din-ner Dance on the 14th, and a very niceshow on August 24. This will be a Hawai-ian Night show, with hula dancers, flam-ing torch tosses, Hawaiian music as wellas dancing. This promises to be a fullshow, and seats are $10.00. We enjoyedthis entertaining group in the past, andlook forward to seeing them again. Res-ervations can be made with our box-of-fice. Please plan on attending, and bringyour neighbors and friends.

We should use those statistics men-tioned above to make certain that everyeffort is being made to keep the nobleswe have, and go out and find some goodcandidates for both our Masonic Lodgesand our Shrine Temple.

We have a nobility that can turn ourstatistics around.

Let’s all be supporting the member-ship committee.

as it wasn’t presented at a stated meet-ing (this means less then 200 of our 2,000membership heard what was being con-sidered.) I have attempted to get legisla-tive information from Imperial and fromthe Florida Grand Lodge, but the answeralways is, “we don’t put this stuff outuntil we know the divans and the Ma-sonic district leaders actually have theinformation, we don’t want to preempt

their right to present the information.”When was the last time you received thisinformation from your divan or yourMasonic district leaders? You can ask forit, of course, and most likely you will beable to see it, if the leader has it withthem. In the case of Grand Lodge legisla-tive notes, you can hear them read in afew selected lodge meetings (of coursethese only get the information to lessthen 3% of our membership, as that’s allthat ever attend the meetings.)

In fact, I usually get this informationfrom sources other than Sahib or Ma-sonic District 27. One place I get Callinformation is Shriners 2000 YahooGroup. This year, the 2007 Call was re-lated by a past potentate in Michigan onJune 6! I was unable to obtain a copy ofthe Legislative Notes for the FloridaGrand Lodge (I did ask district leaders ifthey could provide a copy.) We do getreports on what happened to resolutionvoting, thanks to Sahib nobles that at-tend the functions, and agree to providereports for us in the Sahib Reporter.

I haven’t made up my mind if this lackof communications is to prevent thegrassroots from knowing and understand-ing what is going to be voted on, or if theyjust don’t consider us grassroots mem-bers important enough, to be let in onwhat is going on in our fraternity. Whatdo you think? Maybe I’m too sensitive onthis, and most of you really aren’t inter-ested, and don’t care what these bodiesare passing onto law, that we all mustlive by? I know I’m really tired of tryingto obtain these documents for publish-ing. I’ll probably just forget about themin the future, unless I hear from asufficient number of you that really areinterested.

Membershipby Tom Millaway, Membership Chairman, [email protected]

Here we are eight months into the year and stillwe have not brought in enough new members.

Yes, we all have reasons for getting new members puton the ‘back burner’. We are all busy and have toomuch to do, but that is precisely why we need newmembers.

We need more hands to accomplish our tasks. Justthink if we have 100 new workers who could help usat ballgames, bingo, and all the other work we do; howmuch easier it would be. I know how hard it is to keepgetting members to volunteer.

We all work hard to make our temple a placewhere we enjoy the fun and fellowship that Sahiboffers, so take those extra few minutes and ask yourfriends or family members to think about joining ourgreat fraternity. I often hear members saying, “I wishmy father or other relative had been more open andtalked to me about the Shrine.” I really did not knowwhat they did, or I would have joined sooner.

Remember, we can ask, your father couldn’t. Soplease ask someone you know to join us for fun andfellowship, and help our children get well.

The candidates, first line signers and unit and clubheads all assembled on Wednesday May 30 at

Sahib to induct these Masons into the Sahib Shrine. The bar was open, the buffet table was set-up andeveryone had a good time. The candidates were es-corted to the Cabiri where they received all the per-tinent information a Shriner needs to know to attenda Shrine function. A class picture was taken and theywere escorted back to the main hall to hear theseveral units and clubs explain their unit/club func-tion.

The presenter was allowed to talk for three min-utes and if he ran longer than that the gong wouldsound. A few of the presenters received a small gongand were asked to be seated, but PP Phil Mitchellfrom the Clowns received the real gong because of hisrambling on. Rocky from the Hillbilly Club was prob-ably the best dressed Hillbilly I have ever seen (seehis photo in this article.) This group of 14 newly madenobles (photos/bios on page 27) were very interestedin what the Shrine has to offer. All the presentersstressed that they should get their ladies involved.

Remember to greet your new nobles when you seethem.

Hospital updateby Imp. Sir Ralph Semb, Shrine Hospital Chairman, Board of Trustees, [email protected]

Wow, hard to believe that the Imperial CouncilSession is over and we have all had a chance to

get home and relax a little. Well, maybe to some thatis true, but I have been busy with a lot of hospitalbusiness. I again “Thank” each of you for re-electingme as the President of the Board of Directors of theColorado Corporation. If there is anything that youmay feel that I can do better, please feel comfortablein communicating that to me. I will continue to up-date each of you on all of the hospital matters that youare all concerned about, I promise you that. I hopeeveryone enjoyed the Session. I think that ImperialSir Nick Thomas and Illustrious Sir Stu Wright andtheir committees did a fantastic job with this session, including have excellent weather.

Our new Imperial Potentate Dr. Bernard Lemieuxhas already sent some information out to you. I amhappy about that. Open communications are alwayswelcome.

I want to congratulate the administrator at theTampa Hospital Alice Lanford for becoming a Fellowwith the American College of Healthcare Executives.I understand that Tony Lewgood, the Administratorof the Lexington Hospital, became a Fellow with theAmerican College of Healthcare Executives also. Ourcongratulations go to both of these Administrators.

At the Annual Meeting of Shriners Hospitals forChildren, the item that was finally put to bed was theissue with the Canadian Hospital. Now I believe thatthe employees can take a big “breath of relief” thatthe hospital will stay in Quebec. On August 1, ourExecutive Vice President Jim Full, the Chairman ofthe Planning Committee Imperial Sir Tad Claypooland I will be going up to Montreal to talk with McGilland its architects. The Glen Yard property was rati-fied as 100% cleaned up by the Representatives atthis Session.

Our new branding and marketing initiative hasbeen accepted and we look forward to bringing ourorganization to new heights. I have inserted a copy ofthe new logo into this email. I can tell you that Ibelieve that it takes Shriners Hospitals for Childrento a new level. I realize that change is hard to make, and I can tell you that the more you look at this, themore attached you get to it.

We are also looking forward to the Special Disabil-ity Olympics which are being held at the Spokanehospital. I know that the board members have done agreat job of getting sponsors. I am sure that themembership of El Katif have also been helping and Ithank them as well. My congratulations to all. Thisevent takes place next week in Spokane during theweek of July 21-28.

I am sure that you have heard of the small air-plane crash in the Orlando area. Shriners Hospitalsfor Children was called to help this 11-year-old boythat was burned because of the crash. The child wasairlifted to our Shrine Burn Hospital in Cincinnati. The child is still in critical condition with 85% of hisbody burned. They removed the burned skin lastThursday and Friday and covered him with “Integra.”There may be a strip of skin in his torso area andbuttocks area that can be saved. They will cultivatethis skin for future use on his body.

The boy is stable, but in very critical condition.Imperial Sir Gary Bergenske left me an email andupdated me on the child and how Bahia was able tohelp. Will keep you informed on the condition of thischild.

Received a note from one of our BOG membersvery concerned about not being able to send birthdaycards to the children in the hospital. I have spokenwith our Executive Vice President Jim Full and weare going to look into ways that this can be accom-plished without violating the HIPPA act. It wouldjust seem to me that we should be able to give themonth of the birthday without a violation. I havesince checked into this method and found that it canbe accomplished. So, if there are any hospitals thathave not been able to send birthday cards to thepatients, let me know and I will have Joe Melchiorresend a note to the administrators.

The “official” ground breaking for the Honoluluhospital will be on August 7. The Imperial PotentateDr. Bernie Lemieux and I are looking forward to thisevent. The Capital Fund Raising effort is really mov-ing along very well.

When was the last time you attended a ScottishRite meeting? We all need to be reminded of

how important our attendance is for all our fraternalgroups. As I began to think about this I rememberedthe following poem. I don’t know who wrote it orwhere it came from, but it does provide us with agentle reminder of what we should be doing.

Are you an active member? The kind that would be missed

Or are you just contentedThat your name is on the list?

Do you attend the meetingsAnd mingle with the flock?

Or do you stay away from themAnd criticize and knock?

Do you take an active partTo help the work along?

Or are you satisfied to beThe kind who just belongs?

Do you ever work on committeesTo see there is no trick?

Or leave the work to just a fewAnd talk about a clique?

So come to meetings oftenAnd help with hand and heart.

Don’t be just a member. But take an active part.

Think this over, Brother,You know right from wrong.

Are you an active memberOr do you just belong?

Remember – your Scottish Rite meets all summer onthe second Monday of the month with dinner at6:00 p.m. and the meeting at 7:30 p.m. Ladies areinvited to join the men for dinner, after which somespecial entertainment will be provided for them whilethe men are in the meeting.

Continuing the Early History of the Royal ArchThe time honored practice of conferring the RoyalArch only on those who have previously qualified byfirst becoming either actual or virtual Masters of alodge seems to be suggested by a practice in theScottish Lodge of Edinburgh in the seventeenth cen-tury. This lodge was controlled by its Masters. Thatis, those who were master tradesmen or mason con-tractors. In the early eighteenth century, there was arevolt on the part of the journeymen or fellow-craftsthat separated and formed a Lodge of JourneymenMasons. It was this Lodge which went to law in 1715to secure the right to give the Mason Word (OurModern Master Mason degree?)

The existence of a class of Masters, separate andapart from the main body of the Craft, and at a timewhen lodge ceremonies were beginning to break downinto several parts or degrees, makes it almost manda-

tory to suppose those Masters had ceremonies andsecrets of their own not shared with the rest of theCraft. In this situation, some students see a beginningfor what was later to be known as the Royal Arch.

Whatever may have been the facts we set forth asa premise in this history, the Royal Arch Degreedeveloped concurrently with the three degrees of thelodge, and that it had its roots far back in Craftpractice before there were any positive ceremonialdistinctions between different grades of Masons. It ispointed out that the essence of the Royal Arch, if notthe degree itself, had a usage among Masons as earlyas 1725, which date scholars accept as the earliest datethe degree of Master Mason can definitely be fixed.

The 178th Grand Communication of the GrandLodge of Florida was held 27-30 May in the Rosen

On May 15, 2007, Lady Patty Hunsberger, NoblesJohn Cooney, Charles Hamilton and myself trav-

eled to Bradenton to Rowlett Elementary School topick up pull-tabs. This school project started as amath project last year and has grown into a contest tosee which class can save the most. Last year Don andLady Elayne Sims answered the call for the pick up of250 pounds. This year’s total number of pounds pickedup was 279.4, and the kids said next year the goal is300 pounds. This will help fix a lot of wheelchairs andsend children to the Shrine camp during the summer. We are looking forward to their call next year to seeif they meet or break their goal!

The officers have been in touch over the summerand have been planning activities for all. Rememberwe are having “fun for a purpose” as we help theShrine children and our community.

Any lady who wishes to become a member of SAR-ICourt LOSNA, please contact our Recorder LauraBurgess @758-9196 or myself. Come join the fun!

was given two petitions and directed tobring in two new members B one to re-place himself and one to help the organi-zation grow. This was a challenge thathas worked well.

Sunday evening was the GrandMaster’s banquet. Following a steak din-ner, entertainment was provided by co-median Homer Noodleman. The GrandMarshal then introduced the dignitariespresent.

On Monday, May 28, the 178th GrandCommunication was opened and the col-ors were presented by the Scottish RiteGuard from the Valley of Jacksonville. All officers of appendant and allied bod-ies were introduced. Imperial Shrine wasrepresented by Imperial Sir Jack Jonesand Sahib Temple was represented byIllustrious Sir Dale LaBell, AssistantRabban Oscar Cloutier and Treasurer R.W. Paul Tobias. Four other ShrineTemples were represented, Morocco,Egypt, Mahi and Amara.

The Past Grand Masters were thenrecognized and, along with the heads ofother bodies, seated in the Grand East.

Most Worshipful Grand Master Rob-ert D. Trump gave his report in which hestated that he had visited all 35 MasonicDistricts of Florida, as well as Grandfunctions of youth groups and other Ma-sonic bodies, including serving as hostGrand Master for the Imperial Shrinesession in Tampa. His special charitywas Diabetes Research and he was ableto raise over $106,300 for this project. His wife’s project was to refurbish therooms for the residents of the MasonicHome and that was successfully com-pleted. A complete copy of his report isavailable in the Shrine office if anyonewould like to read his report in entirety.

On Monday afternoon the ladies wereinvited into the lodge room and the wivesof the Grand Lodge officers were intro-duced, as well as the heads of the ladies’organizations. The heads of the youthorganizations were introduced and pre-sented scholarships. Each of the repre-sentatives of the youth groups was invitedto speak and all did a great job. We wereparticularly proud of Diana Bergeron,Grand Worthy Advisor of Rainbow forGirls who is from our Masonic District. She has done a great job all year.

This was followed by the Grand Ora-tion by R. W. Phillip Hudson, whose mes-sage was that the time has come to takecourageous action, capitalize on recent

publicity and initiate new legislation tomodernize the Craft. A copy of the fulladdress is in the Shrine office.

In the afternoon election for 2007 -2008 was held, 293 of the 297 lodges inFlorida were represented. With the P. G.M.s and Grand Officers there were 902possible votes, 1359 Masons were regis-tered.

The following were elected:

MW Robert D. Harry, Jr.Grand Master

RW Joe FleitesDeputy Grand Master

RW Dale I. GeohrigSenior Grand Warden

RW J. Dick MartinezJunior Grand Warden

MW Elmer G. Coffman, PGMGrand Treasurer

MW Roy Connor Sheppard, PGMGrand Secretary

After elections the lodge was called torecess and the DeMolay degrees wereconferred for King Solomon’s Chapter byDeMolay from various chapters. Fiveyoung men and many Master Masonsreceived the degrees in a class named forIllustrious Robert. L. Goldsmith, PGM,Grand Prior, Sovereign Grand InspectorGeneral in Florida, Ancient and AcceptedScottish Rite of Freemasonry, SouthernJurisdiction. Ill. Goldsmith also receivedthe Order Knighthood with the assis-tance of the Commandry of Knights Tem-plar and the DeMolay.

Later that evening the Actual PastMasters Degree was conferred upon 201Florida Masters and Past Masters.

On Tuesday, legislation as taken upwith the following being passed:

1) To allow the location of a MemorialLodge Charter and address to be changedfrom year to year by the newly electedWorshipful Master, providing the loca-tion is one of the supporting lodges.

2) To remove the requirement for resi-dents of the Masonic Home to performreasonable labor on the grounds of thehome.

3) To provide District Instructors withthe title of Right Honorable (this willhave to pass again next year).

4) To relocate the Forms and ceremo-nies now housed in Jacksonville to Or-ange Park Lodge.

There were six items which failed, one of which we all need to be aware of.That item would have required a back-ground investigation for all candidates

at a cost of about $75 per candidate. Thiswas proposed in view of some problemsthat have surfaced with new members.

The Grand Lodge Administrative Bud-get for 2007-2008 of $1,594,576 waspassed. This is an increase of $62,335and reflects increased costs for insur-ance and cost of living raises for employ-ees.

The budget for the Masonic Home ofFlorida for 2007-2008 is $7,443,715,which is a decrease of $14,000 from lastyear, but does not include insurance atthe Masonic Home.

The Masonic Home in St. Petersburghas been studying and is going forwardon planning for building independent liv-ing facilities. There will eventually bethree buildings each three stories withunder building parking for each unit. There will be three types of units: onebedroom/one bath at 623 sq. ft.; two bed-room/two bath at 916 sq. ft.; and twobedroom/two bath at 1170 sq. ft. All unitswill have a balcony and other amenities. The Grand Lodge voted to continue plan-ning and obtaining the necessary per-mits.

In Grand Master Trump’s farewelladdress he commented on how much heenjoyed his year and reminded us thatwe (each and every Mason) representMasonry to the world and that we shouldalways walk and act with that thought inmind.

Following the installation of officersMW Robert D. Harry reported that hischarity for the year would be the MasonicResearch Center in Utica, New York. This research center was founded byMasons in the 1950’s and is run by Ma-sons. Its goal is to improve health andquality of life for all. His other project isrefurbishing the serving line at the Ma-sonic Home in St. Petersburg.

this old hospital. Imperial Sir Doug Maxwell willhave headquarters staff involved as well. Our grow-ing interest is being able to partner with WashingtonUniversity in a fantastic research program.

As fall will soon approach, so will the Fry’s.ComPro Am PGA Tour event in Las Vegas, which willbenefit Shriners Hospitals for Children. Yes, a PGATOUR event! What an exciting event this will be. Ifany of you would like to help us in obtaining sponsors, please let Gary Davis know. He can be reached at<[email protected]> you may also contact ImperialSir Dale Stauss. We have to raise about 1.4 milliondollars. We hope to get many of the top ranked Prosto play in this event. It will be played at the TPCSummerlin and TPC The Canyons on October 8-14.We will have more information going out regardingthe ticket sales and volunteers that we will need. Thiswill be an “EVENT,” not just a Pro Golf tournament.Gary has been able to get a huge amount of the localLas Vegas business community to help as well. For anexample, the wives of the pro golfers will be given theopportunity to a part of a fashion show, put on byNiemen Marcus, with their number one designer andusing his top models for the show. Also, they will haveaccess to a spa, breakfast at Tiffany’s, etc. The thoughthere is that if we can get the wives to come to Vegas, their husband will be coming along, like it or not andplay in the golf event.

There is a window of opportunity that this could bethe Shriners Hospital for Children Pro Am. Let meknow what you think of this possibility. Instead of theFry’s.com Open, it would be Shriners Hospitals for

Children Pro Am Open. It could also become a part ofthe Fed Ex Tour. This is of course looking into thefuture, but we all have to dream a little. Remember,“To Dream is to Make Something Happen!”

I also remind you of our 83rd East West Shrine AllStar Football game which will take place in HoustonTexas on January 19, 2008. Again, the Shrines show-case to the world. Many love football and we are veryfortunate to have this event every year. The NFL istaking a lot of pride in being a part of this as well.Again, if you can help us with sponsors, we wouldreally appreciate that assistance. I sure hope thateveryone will be coming to this event, taking part inthe Counterparts Dinners on Thursday night, thePlayers Banquet on Friday night and finally thefootball game on Saturday, where the East will befavored. Of course, we must also remember the SilentAuction that Imperial Sir Gene Bracewell and hisLady Kathryn have a joy in taking care of. Lots ofgreat football memorabilia can be bid on from theNFL teams. I was asked as to when the rooms wouldbe released to the membership. I asked Imperial SirDale Stauss about this and he informed me that hewould be meeting this week in Houston with thehotel.

I must remind you again to check the ShrineWebsite. There you can find lots of information re-garding up and coming events, membership benefits,a place to order PR material, other hospital informa-tion and fraternal information <www.shrinershq.org>.

Ok, now to everyone, enjoy the remainder of thesummer; be careful if and when you take a welldeserved vacation. I look forward to visiting witheach of you.

Again, best wishes for a great summer.

Many times, I have been asked why I became aclown… A good many years ago, my mother

suffered a series of debili-tating strokes. The softsmile on her face and thegleam in her eyes disap-peared. Previously, she hadalways been so robust andfull of life. It was then thatI decided to become a Shrineclown. My motives wereselfish—it was my motherfor whom I wanted to be-come a clown, not the “chil-dren.”

At the time, I was aMaster Mason, but had notgiven any thought of con-tinuing further to become aShriner. I made the deci-sion, went through the additional degrees and wasinitiated into “Shrinedom” at Azan Temple. I was onmy way.

Attending the first clown meeting was a “hoot”and nothing at all like I had expected. When I ex-

plained to them my pur-pose in becoming a clown, they assured me that theywould help. In no time atall, I was in costume andmaking balloon figures.

An appointment wasmade for a “gig” at the nurs-ing home where my motherlived and everybody wasgathered into the dining hall, anxiously awaiting our ap-pearance. My mother wasunaware of what I had beendoing for the past months inpreparation for this and hadno idea of my involvementwith the clowns.

As they say, “the stage was set.” With a lot of“hoopin’ and hollering” and horn blowing (my taxi

The Ladies of Sar-I Court started in 1992 collecting and donatingaluminum pull-tabs to the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund.” As of May 11,2007, they have collected 49,413 lbs., for a total of $22,722.67 for theTampa Shriners Hospital.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on PULL TABS

1. Why not collect the whole can? Collecting complete canswould require a great deal more storage space. You shouldgo ahead and recycle the rest of the can in the normal way,in the dumpster behind Sahib.

2. How many tabs in a pound? 1,267.3. How many tabs will a gallon milk jug hold? About 5 pounds

worth.6. How does it work and where does the money go? The tabs

are delivered to the Sahib office (or almost any Sahib club/unit location) and then taken to the recycling center. Themoney netted from recycling goes directly into the “WheelChair Repair Fund” at the Tampa Shriners Hospital forChildren.

Help us collect TABS! It’s easy and it’s fun! Put out a milk jug at every picnic or party!

While Shriners of North America

has had a presence in Europe for

some time, impressive membership

development initiatives are also

underway in Central and South

America. In October, Imperial

Divan members visited Ecuador,

the Republic of Panama and Costa

Rica to celebrate the establishment

of a new Shrine Club, help create

new Nobles, visit with Masonic

brethren and increase awareness

of the Shriners fraternity.

In Ecuador, Imperial Potentate

Nick Thomas and Imperial Sirs

Ralph Semb and Mike Severe

helped celebrate the establishment

of a new Ecuador Shrine Club

associated with Abou Saad Shriners

in Panama. They also visited Quito

and Guayaquil, where they had

the opportunity to create 10 new

Nobles in each city.

“We are proud these Nobles

have joined our international

fraternity and are helping us

strengthen membership in Central

and South America,” said Imperial

Sir Nick. “These are men of strong

character and devoted Masons

– we couldn’t be more pleased

they made the commitment to

become Shriners.”

Among the new Shriners were

the Grand Master of Ecuador, the

Ecuador Sovereign Grand Inspector

General, a noted Ecuadorian

orthopaedic surgeon and an

Argentine diplomat to Ecuador.

“The new Shriners in Ecuador

are committed to not only the

fellowship of the fraternity, but also

to identifying patients like a child

in Ecuador who was burned in the

Tungurahua Volcano eruption,”

Imperial Sir Ralph said. “That child

was sent to our Shriners Hospital

in Boston and is now receiving

treatment.”

In addition to the creation of new

Nobles, the visit to Ecuador included

three press conferences, held at

the U.S. Embassy, the University of

Guayaquil’s Medical School and

Simon Bolivar International Airport.

Imperial Sirs Nick and Ralph also

had the opportunity to meet U.S.

Ambassador to Ecuador Linda

Jewell and Guayaquil’s mayor,

as well as visit the first lady of

Ecuador’s National Institute for

Children and Family.

In Panama, Imperial Sirs Nick

and Ralph visited the presidential

palace and met with the president

of the Republic of Panama, Martin

Torrijos Espino. During the visit,

they also met and dined with the

Potentate of Abou Saad Shriners,

his Divan and several Nobles.

Traveling next to San Jose,

Costa Rica, Imperial Sirs Nick

and Ralph met with Shrine

Club members and the Grand

Master of Costa Rica, who were

interested in learning how to

increase membership and help

with health care for children in

their country.

Imperial Sirs Mike, Nick and Ralph (seated,

center) celebrated the creation of 10 new

Nobles in Quito during their trip to Ecuador

in October.
