Potentate’s MessageNobles and Ladies:If you didn’t make the

Carolina Beach ceremonial there is no doubt that you have heard about it. It was over the top! Some started on the golf course while our army of Shriners and their Ladies were setting up for casual Friday night at the Lakeside with units cooking their favorite foods, Arab Shrine Club’s part y central mixing cordials, and other frozen creations were available courtesy of the Van Patrol. Our DJ, Ray Johnson, was cooking the tunes. It was one full night of fun and fellowship.

The fun continued Saturday with beautiful weather, a full slate for our new candidates which included a big and well represented shrine parade, excellent fish dinner by our Chef Crew and lively Second Section by our award winning Wrecking Crew. The Arab Shrine Club’s hospitalit y rooms were top notch. The weekend pinnacled with the heartwarming Fez and Rose presentation. Welcome to our 26 new Shriners and their Ladies. We knew we had reached the beautiful sunset of a great ceremonial when we were blessed to have visits from Addison, currently in our Shriners Hospital system, and two former patients; Sarah and our newest Shriner, Chris. There were teary eyes everywhere as it hit home what we are all about and the young lives we changed after hearing their success stories.

A special thank you to, our new Outer Guard, Lou Smith and his Lady Pat, the Ceremonial Committee, Arab Shrine Club, Ladies of the Arab Shrine Club, Sudan Drum & Bugle Corps and Arab Choo Choo who were the hosts of this memorable beach part y ceremonial. Their hard work and planning was very evident by the hundreds of smiles that they were responsible for. Thanks to our local Fireballs (a special ops team). A big thank you to Steve Marshburn, Randy Simpson, the Van Patrol members and their ladies who came to town with a huge vending operation caravan and a custom made Tiki Bar constructed by Woody. The frozen drinks were flowing. And thank you to the units that traveled to the sands, shared their culinary skills and cooked their delicious specialties. It looked like Sudan Cit y.

Our 2014 fundraisers are still ongoing with detailed information provided in this edition. Thank you to the Divan, Trustees, Snow, Wayne and Shriners that contributed for a successful Shrine commemorative rifle raffle. The golf cart and trailer need more travel and exposure at upcoming communit y events, festivals and county fairs. I most recently

visited an event in Wallace and there was a constant flow of festival goers coming to purchase chances to win. Thank you to the clubs, units and Shriners that have continued to support this fundraiser. Congratulations to the Duplin County Shrine Club who have raised over $3,200+ and still going. Thank you again Wayne for your efforts. From this point forward, the tickets sold are profit; let’s keep the momentum going. Call the temple and it will be arranged to get one of the two carts available scheduled.

Let’s not forget our ever faithful $10,000 raffle that is ongoing. The Smoke on the River BBQ cook-off is in the planning stages and scheduled for September 27th. Contact Sharon Evans at the office if you would like to help. Any club, unit or group of Shriners that are interested in participating in this event should also contact Sharon so that we can get an idea of participation anticipated.

By the time you read this message, the clubs and units will have received information regarding a new fundraiser underway by the new Sudan Scimitars unit, whose fundraisers are for the benefit of Sudan Shriners.

Our focus and challenge is to provide an opportunit y for our Brother Masons to join Sudan Shriners and to enjoy the fun and fellowship. To date, 41 new Shriners have been created and our 2014 goal is to exceed 125. We owe it to our Masonic Brethren to invite them to join us in our common cause to educate others about the great work of our Shriners Hospitals for Children. All we need to do is to ask. Please call those nobles that you haven’t seen in a while or those on the NPD list. Our membership committee is working hard and doing a great job reaching out to these nobles. We have nobles available to present Masonic education with a video about our hospitals and the lives that we touch each and every day. Also, speakers can be arranged for civic groups. Time to go, grow and end up strong at the One Day Ceremonial on September 13th in New Bern. Another unforgettable membership opportunit y will be at the Fall Ceremonial held in Smithfield in November. Don’t sit back and let everybody tell you about this one. Be there!

Don’t forget about SASA in Myrtle Beach, September 18-20; Smoke on the River Cook-off, September 27; and the Masonic Home for Children’s 4th Annual Homecoming Festival October 10-11.

RECORDERS MESSAGE

3rd Quarter 2014

The first few months as your new Sudan Re-corder have been busy, full of excitement and challenges and very re-

warding. The world of Sudan Shriners does not slow down one minute! Lady Jan and I have met a lot of fantastic nobles and ladies everywhere we go.

On April 8th, I attended the Grand Masters Dis-trict Masonic meeting in Fremont with Most Worship-ful Brother Dalton Mayo. His presentation applied to not only our blue lodge brothers but York Rite, Scottish Rite and Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. “If we don’t start taking better care of our new blue lodge masons we will not keep them in our fraternit y.” Only 20 % of new masons continue through the fraternit y. Does that tell you why we may have trouble with our shrine member-ship efforts? Mentoring and first impressions are going to make or break us! Our Sudan Membership Team, led by Noble Harry Cosner is tackling this issue, hoping their efforts and mentoring will keep the new nobles and reinvigorate some of the older members. Noble Harry could use some nobles from the north end and the I-95 South area of Sudan to help with this committee.

The May Ceremonial in Carolina Beach was a huge success. We had visitors from our neighboring Amran Shriners and also Acca Shriners in Richmond, VA and several of Sudan’s past potentates. Friday night’s out-side event at the lake was outstanding. We had lots of food, fellowship, music, dancing and fun. On Saturday morning we saw a super group of 26 new nobles take that big step into the Mystic Shrine. The Fez & Rose ceremony that evening was as great as ever with over 300 nobles, ladies and guests in attendance.

Tidbits here and there! We are on the hunt again for the Imperial Shriners Dromedary Awards competi-tion in two categories. The Red Fez and our website have been submitted for the competition. The SASA Director General has an outstanding SASA planned for Myrtle Beach, September 17 – 21. Sudan is #3 in the parade lineup. There will be a backyard picnic on the

lawn at the Spring Maid Beach Resort after the parade on Saturday at which time the parade winners will be announced and trophies presented. We will be sending out the SASA schedule to all club and unit heads. It will also be posted on our website with changes as they occur.

We are doing very well again this year in fundraising efforts. Our units are cooking fish or chicken, selling onions, attending festivals, events, and parades and if they keep it up, we will surpass last years’ efforts. We have had organizers tell us that if wasn’t for Sudan’s units, their parades wouldn’t be much! Don’t forget to have our golf cart at your fundraisers, for those ticket sales.

We need to start looking now for those new candi-dates for the One Day Ceremonial in September and the Fall Ceremonial in Smithfield.

Attend your blue lodge, shrine club events, involve your family and be safe in your travels.

Fraternally,

George L. Raecher Recorder

South Brunswick Islands Shrine Club – Easter Egg Hunt

Past President Ron Jessie helps Alana, Kala and Jude find the last of the Easter Eggs

The South Brunswick Island Shrine Club hosted an

Easter Egg Hunt for children in the Shallotte area on April 5th with 30 children attending, along with their parents. The club was decorated in spring colors with Easter centerpieces on all the tables. The children and their parents were treated to a hot dog lunch with all the trimmings and a collection of the most festive cup-cakes you can imagine. As part of the event, the children were treated to face painting and gifts from the Shal-lotte Point Volunteer Fire Department. The firefighters had a fire truck on site along with firefighter turn out gear. They presented the children with firefighter hats and coloring books. Several of the members of the Shal-lotte Point Volunteer Fire Department are members of the South Brunswick Island Shrine Club. In the best of shrine traditions, the Shriners made sure all the chil-dren’s Easter baskets were filled to over-flowing with candy. Needless to say, a good time was had by all.

Noble Lee Hall passes out firefighter hats and coloring books the children who attended the Egg Hunt.

Wrecking Crew Wins AgainOur Sudan Wrecking crew attended the Shriners Inter-

national, Shrine Directors Association annual meeting at Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, hosted by Omar Shriners on April 12 -14, 2014. Our Wrecking Crew came away with the “Best Stunt” award and with it the Traveling Trophy that goes with the award. This is the second time Sudan has won. They won the award the first time in 2008.

Director Tommy Sasser presented the stunt, “Cold T-Shirt”. Congratulations to the entire Wrecking Crew Unit for this great accomplishment. Director Sasser was not able to attend the banquet and Noble Ray Casey, Past Director of the Sudan contingent accepted the award at the annual awards banquet. The trophy was brought to the Spring Cer-emonial at Carolina Beach for display and a presentation with Illustrious Sir Rick Jackson. The trophy was taken to the second section on Saturday with the Sudan Wrecking Crew. The Shrine Directors Association activities are very highly competitive. There are on an average 25-30 stunts conducted. In years past, there have been as many as 100 of our 195 temples at the event. Congratulations to all for your teamwork and a job well done!!!!

Hope Mills Shrine Club NewsThe Hope Mills Shrine Club had a new concept for their

fish fry. This year we had a fish and chicken fry on April 25, 2014, which was an outstanding success. Harry Carter was chairman for this event. Mr. Carter is General Manager of Reeves Funeral Home in Hope Mills. Three ladies that work at Reeves also worked this fundraiser for the hospitals. The shriners did the cooking and the shrinettes had a bake sale that took in $270.50.

On April 26, 2014, Noble George Raecher, new Record-er for Sudan Shriners, was our guest speaker. It was enjoyed by all.

Greenville

Shriners Hospitals for Children — Greenville patient Sadie Spring was chosen to be in a national commercial for the hospital system. Visit www.GreenvilleShrinersHospital.org to watch Sadie’s commercial, but rst, here’s her story.

Meet Sadie SpringJessi Spring remembers looking forward to her doctor’s appointment because she was going to learn if she was having a baby girl or boy. “After staring at the screen for a very long time, the obstetrician turned to my husband and me and said, ‘Everything is probably all right, but I think your daughter may have a club foot.’” Jessi was sent to a local high risk preg-nancy oce for a 3-D ultrasound. After the ultra-sound, Jessi describes, “They came into the room and told us ‘Your baby has some problems.’” Not only did Sadie have clubbed feet, she was also diagnosed with arthrogryposis. Arthrogryposis is a rare, non-progressive muscle disorder causing sti joints and an overall lack of muscular development. Children with arthrogryposis are born with a deformity of the joint and a limited range of joint motion. All of Sadie’s joints were aected. While researching arthrogryposis and treatments on the internet, Jessi discovered

Shriners Hospitals for Children — Greenville and occupational therapist Lisa Wagner, MHS, OTR/L. Lisa immediately invited Jessi to meet with her and tour the hospital. Jessi says, “Lisa introduced me to all of the doctors who would treat Sadie after she was born. She made me feel very comfortable with the hospital.

At three weeks old, Sadie began receiving care at Shriners Hospitals for Children. The hospital treated her club feet with Ponseti Method casting. The Ponseti Method of serial casting includes gentle massage and moving of parts of the foot to stretch the tight or shortened structures slowly into a good position. A long leg cast then holds the foot in place for about a week. The cast is taken o and the foot is again massaged or stretched and moved into a more correct position. A cast is then reapplied. Sadie’s mom says, “Thanks to Shriners Hospitals for Children, Sadie can now walk barefoot and will not have to have any major surgeries on her feet.” While Sadie’s legs were in casts, her arms were receiving intense physical therapy, occupational therapy, and serial splinting. When Sadie was born, her wrists were bent downwards and her ngers were twisted. Sadie wore the arm splints and each week the splints were adjusted to reect her new range of motion. Jessi had to do physical therapy on Sadie’s arms and ngers at every diaper change until she was six months old.

Sadie received serial casting once again. This time it was for her elbows. At birth, Sadie had less than ve degrees of range of motion in her elbows. Through therapy, splinting and active play, and elbow release surgeries, Sadie can now bend both of her elbows.

Today, at four years old, Sadie continues to come to the Greenville Shriners Hospital each week for occupational therapy and is making great strides every day to become more and more independent. With her contagious smile, there is no doubt Sadie will go far.

Fundraisers for 2014Golf Cart: This successful fundraiser is back and tickets are $5 each or $20 for 5 tickets. This is a custom cart with trailer and several free options included to the winner. Carts will be available in Lumberton and New Bern for pick up for clubs and units to display at shrine, masonic and community events. Some ideas are car shows, large commu-nity events, fairs, etc. The drawing will be at the Fall Ceremonial in Smithfield.$10,000 Cash Giveaway: This is another success-ful fundraiser that has been continued. Five win-ners will be announced at the Fall Ceremonial in Smithfield.Smoke on the River: Saturday, September 27th - This event is still in the planning stage. This is a BBQ pig cook- -off, on the Neuse River across from the temple, to provide a little competition for bragging rights for our clubs and units. Depending on space availability we will invite Masonic cook-ing teams as well. This will be associated with a Poker Run for the motorcycle enthusiasts. There is rumored to be the possibility of a DJ and local band(s) etc. We plan to provide the locals an op-portunity to join the fun later that day. Keep your eyes and ears open for future updates.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~No time to rest, keep on moving on and be a part of the excitement and involved in the fraternal and charitable fundraisers! We are here to have fun and don’t miss an opportunity to do so.
Million Dollar Pickle Festival
#2 (Left to Right) Noble Matt Delbridge, Dr. Yeh, Noble John Hall with Jalen and Mattie
On Saturday, April 26, 2014, the Wayne Shrine Club had one of those “Million Dollar Days”. They set up a booth at the North Carolina Pickle Festival in Mount Olive with some goals in mind. They were looking for some children that might need the help of our Shriners Hospitals for Chil-dren. The event opened at 9:30am and before 12:00noon, they were providing advice and directions to three different families with children as potential new patients.
The lady in the photo above was treated 23 years ago for orthopedic issues. The children pictured above, Mattie and Jalen thanked the nobles for helping their cousin Megan. Five other families who had received care in the past from our Shriners Hospitals for Children stopped and expressed their thanks and gratitude. Over 1,000 pieces of informa-tion about our SHC’s and approximately 50 magazines were distributed to the public. Without a doubt, this event was worth more than a million. Our nobles were assisted at the event by Dr. Siegfried Yeh from Goldsboro Pediatrics.
Sudan Hillbilly Unit Clan 58
In 1962, Imperial Sir Jim Harris initiated work to establish the Hillbilly Degree for Imperial Shriners. Through his hard work and efforts, the ritual and ini-tiation of the new unit was adopted and approved. In 1970, it was approved at the Imperial Session as well as the Shriners Hospitals for Children board.
In 1982, a petition was submitted to the Imperial Clan to establish a Clan in Cumberland County. Ap-proval was received from the Imperial and Clan 58 was established with all the privileges extended to all Clans. With this charter, Clan 58 was able to initiate new mem-bers into the Clan as well as grant “Outhouse” status to groups of Hillbilly’s within and outside Cumberland County. At present, there are two Hillbilly Outhouses under Clan 58.
At the same time Clan 58 was established, Nobles Charles Brock and Joe Perry petitioned Sudan Temple for a Hillbilly Marching Unit. The Sudan Hillbilly Marching unit began with a model “A” vehicle owned
by Noble Joe, which he decided to sell. There was very little money in the treasury and only 20 members. They voted to put up $100.00 each to purchase the vehicle. Next a small trailer was purchased to haul the Model “A”. This was the main vehicle used for the parades until the current trailer was purchased and serves the dual purpose of hauling the “A” and participating in the parades with the famous outhouse with all its acces-sories, i.e. road kill, oversize laundry and the Hillbillies themselves. The Hillbilly Marching Unit’s first parade was in 1983.
According to the 2013 Imperial Hillbilly Report, Clan 58 membership now stands at 553. Donations to the Shriners Hospitals for Children now total $46,988.00.
The unit averages two initiations a year for Hillbilly membership. Membership into the Hillbilly Degree is a lifetime initiation. Reminder to all, the “Cuzin’s” that would like to join the parade unit must join it separately to comply with Sudan Unit Membership policies and bylaws. If your club or unit is interested in having a Hill-billy Degree conducted please contact the Unit Director, Noble Joe Torres. This will be one of the most fun filled Saturday afternoons or evenings you will have as a Shriner. It is guaranteed that this is something you will never forget and your Lady won’t either. Noble Torres information is contained in the Red Fez magazine and on the Sudan website. Information for this article was submitted by Noble Paul Lanham.
Imperial Potentate Award
During the Winter SASA meeting in Roanoke, Va., the Imperial Potentate, John Cinotto called the Sudan Divan in attendance to the podium to make a special announcement and presentation. He presented Ill. Sir Steve Norris with the Imperial Potentate’s Medallion and directed Ill. Sir Norris to have this presented to Benny Smith, Recorder Emeritus as soon as possible. He commented on Noble Benny’s long time accomplishments and dedication to the fraternit y and Shriners Hospitals for Children, having served as Sudan’s Recorder for the past 15 years. The award was then presented to Noble Benny with his family present at a special luncheon at Wilber’s BBQ on April 6, 2014. A second presentation was made to Noble Benny by Ill. Sir Rick Jackson, on May 3, 2014 at the 2014 Spring Ceremonial at Carolina Beach in the presence of approximately 300 nobles and their ladies. Congratulations to Noble Benny and Lady Laurie for your hard work!
Our Sudan Heroes
There are not many issues of the Red Fez publication that has not had an article and/or photo of our Sudan Roadrun-ners at work with our most important cargo. Our Roadrun-ners have that all-important job of making sure our patients get to their appointments and back home safely. Some of the trips are not driven directly to Shriners Hospitals for Children (SHC). Some trips involve taking the patient and family/guardian to the airport for trips to the SHC - Mon-treal or SHC - Houston for specialt y care. The statistics are absolutely awesome as to what Sudan accomplishes each year. Some really hard workers in this Roadrunner group need to be highlighted. The following nobles had more than 20 trips in 2013: Don Davenport – 34; Joe Fuller – 28; Alvis Col-lins – 26; Tony Ferrell and Jimmy Edmondson with 22 each; and Ben Grady and Tom Jenkins with 20 each. Sudan made a total of 192 road trips transporting a total of 230 patients. There were six trips to Cincinnati and four to Philadelphia. It should also be noted that Harriett Collins went on 19 trips with her husband. We now have five husband/wife teams that volunteer their time and energy to help our children.
Nobles and Ladies when you see one of our Roadrun-ners, take a few minutes to personally thank them for their dedication, sincerit y and efforts for what has to be the most important task we face each day.
Lastly, there is another article in this Red Fez that talks about the screening event at the Mount Olive Pickle Festival. Not to mention in that article some special comments were made by a lady who stopped by the intersection where we were handing out literature. She didn’t say where she was from but she wanted to thank the Roadrunners who took care of her child on their on a trip to Greenville earlier in the year. A big thanks goes out to Nobles Fuller and Davenport! Great job to all of the Sudan Roadrunners for what you do.
Another Happy Ending….or Beginning
Picture – left to right: Sudan Trustee Terry Adams; Mrs. Vickie Oliphant; Katilynn; and President Vernon Spruill.
The Fayetteville Shrine Club had Mrs. Vicki Oliphant
and her daughter, Katilynn, at their April meeting. Mrs. Oli-phant spoke to the club about her daughter’s past medical experiences and how happy she was to learn about Shriners hospitals.
When Katilynn, was three years old, she was running through a field of flowers, her leg gave way and she fell. Ka-tilynn was in a lot of pain and Mrs. Oliphant rushed her to the hospital where they determined that her hip joint had popped out of its socket. They later learned Katilynn had a bone disorder and her hip bone was not growing properly. Mrs. Oliphant tried for the next seven years to get the proper medical help for her daughter without success. The last or-thopedic doctor told her “I can’t help your daughter any-more because I don’t know of anything else to do”. Mrs. Oliphant’s sister called from Alabama and told her about Shriners Hospitals for Children. Mrs. Oliphant called the toll free number and was directed to the SHC in Greenville, SC. Within three weeks Katilynn and mom were on their way to Greenville. After the first visit at SHC, Katilynn told her mom that this was the first time that a doctor had actu-ally listened to her and asked where she was hurting. She was thrilled about staying in her first motel room and having her own bed. She told her mother that she was truly a “princess”.
Katilynn has had a total of nine surgeries since she was three years old and was wheelchair bound as a young child. She will be twelve years old in August and has progressed from a wheelchair, to a walker, to crutches, and now to a small cane. Katilynn had to be home-schooled for so long but was able to start regular school about three months ago. Katilynn has had two procedures at the SHC in Greenville and is expected to have at least two to three more surgeries. Katilynn is so positive and told us that one day she will dance at her prom and we believe that she will - Katilynn is truly a “princess”.
THE “RED FEZ” MAGAZINEThe Sudan Shriners “Red Fez” magazine is a quarterly publication intended to
keep the Nobility, their families and interested friends informed of upcoming events, announcements, and news from Sudan Shriners, clubs, and units.
With a renewed commitment to keep all members informed, the Potentate, Sudan Divan, and Sudan office personnel strive to provide timely information distributed through Website updates at www.sudanshriners.com in addition to this publication.
We welcome article and photo submissions from all Sudan members, clubs, and units with assurance that with space permitting and publishable photographs attached, you can
expect to see your material published on either the Website or in the “Red Fez”. Submissions will be subject to rewrites or modification to insure journalistic accuracy, timeliness, and proper style.
With a rich rewarding history to relish and help compose, Sudan Shriners will continue to provide you, the individual member, club or unit, outlets to share with others, your experiences in your Shrine journey.
The results of your labors are evident in the number of children who have so much more than they might have had otherwise, through your support of the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Be proud that you wear the Red Fez of a Sudan Shriner!
Submit material for the “Red Fez” to Sudan Shriners, 403 E. Front St., New Bern, NC 28560. Submit material for Sudan’s website to: [email protected]. Office: 252-637-5197 Fax: 252-637-9935 Toll Free: 800-697-5197.
