Principal’s Message
We celebrated the virtue of “Peacemaking” during the month of November and we are reminded by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that “peace is not merely a distant goal that we
seek but a means by which we arrive at that goal.” To that end, November is the month of remembrance. On the 11th of November, the school paused to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom and our faith calls us to pray for the dearly departed during the month. As November ends and Advent begins, we are asked to pause and reflect on the true meaning of Christmas. We are encouraged at this time to prepare ourselves for the birth of Jesus by making room to receive God’s gift of love. It is appropriate that the virtue of the month is “charity” since we have an opportunity to help those less fortunate than ourselves. As you celebrate the Christmas season, take time to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas
and as followers of Jesus we are reminded ―It is
more blessed to give than to receive‖. (Acts 20:35) On behalf of the entire staff at All Saints, we wish our students and their families and the entire school community a Holy and Blessed Christmas and a prosperous New Year. D. Whicher Vice Principal

Survey Regarding the
Multi-Year Strategic Plan
The Toronto Catholic District School Board approved its Multi-Year Strategic Plan 2012-2015 in last April. The Multi-Year Strategic Plan (MYSP) includes revised mission, vision and values statements as well as a clear focus on six key strategic directions. The MYSP is the result of a comprehensive and collaborative process. In order to assess how well the MYSP is being communicated and implemented, the entire TCDSB community, as well as representatives of our partner organizations in Catholic education, will be (are) invited to complete a brief electronic survey that will be available online. Trustees, employees, parents, guardians, clergy, TCDSB ratepayers and community members will all be (are all) encouraged to take a few minutes to complete and submit the survey and provide feedback on the initial impact of the Multi-Year Strategic Plan 2012-2015. Please note that the Multi-Year Strategic Plan 2012-2015, hyperlinked Strategic Actions and supporting documents can readily be found on the TCDSB website: http://www.tcdsb.org/Board/Pages/MultiYearStrategicPlan.aspx
All Saints Christmas Wish
This year for Christmas, the parents and staff at All Saints School are taking on a new initiative for the virtue of Charity. We are asking the students of All Saints to sponsor a family in need. Each classroom has received a decorated box to collect the donations and each child has received a sheet with some details of the family (i.e. the gender and ages of the family members). Here are some items that are needed: New age appropriate toys, new clothing, new linens, toiletries, gift cards to Wal-Mart, Superstore, No Frills, etc. The final date to drop off donations to your child’s teacher is December 6th. Thank you for your generosity this Christmas season.

Safe Schools
Visitors to the School
Toronto Catholic District School
Board policy states that all visitors
to the school MUST report to the office. This is foremost to ensure the safety of all students. In an
effort to promote the independence of the students and to ensure the integrity of programs by minimizing interruptions during class time, we request that students arrive prepared for the school day with all the items they require (i.e. homework, lunch, physical education clothing, musical instruments etc.). If you would like to contact your child’s teacher, you may do so through the school office. Please try to make after school arrangements before school.
Allergen Aware
Please take special note that we have children in our school who have very serious allergies to nut products. According to Sabrina’s Law, we must make every effort to maintain a nut free environment in order to help keep these children safe. We ask that you not bring in or send in any food items to be shared with other students in the class. Please note that baked goods and treats are not permitted. We apologize for the inconvenience; however, we are certain you will agree that these measures are necessary in order to ensure the safety and welfare of our children.
Personal Property
The school does not take any responsibility for the loss or theft of personal items brought onto school premises by students. The school will therefore, not reimburse or replace lost or stolen articles, under any circumstances. This will include all articles of clothing (label items with a marker); personal school supplies such as fancy or expensive pens, markers, binders and pencil cases, etc.; simple or electronic toys; calculators, laptops, iPod’s, CD’s, etc. Please note that collector cards of any kind are not permitted, in addition to all cell phones and any other social media devices. These items will be immediately confiscated by staff and brought to the Principal’s attention. We ask both parents and students for their full co-operation in this matter. (Please note that the Board’s insurance policy does not cover
property owned by staff or students).
Safe Arrival and Departure
We continue to remind you to contact the school before 8:30 a.m. if your child is going to be absent from school. If we are unable to take your call, you can leave a message on our answering machine. Please ensure that we have a current emergency number where you can be contacted. If you are picking up your child early, please send a note to your child’s teacher. Please be sure to report to the office to sign them out. If you are returning before the end of the day,
please sign your child back in at the office. All
students on buses must ride the buses to and
from school every day.
Reporting of cancellations or closures due
to inclement weather
Cancellation of school bus transportation or school closures due to inclement weather will be reported through the following vehicles: News
releases to all media outlets in Toronto (Note: although the news release is provided to the media outlets, there is no guarantee that all television and radio stations will
broadcast the information in a timely fashion.) Communications will endeavour to send an email to everyone on exchange to advise them of any cancellations or closures. Communications will also endeavour to send out the information electronically to E-News subscribers (Note: If you do not already subscribe to E-News, but wish to do so, please visit our website at www.tcdsb.org and click on the E-News icon on the top right hand side of the homepage). Updates will also be posted on the Board’s 24-hour information line, 416-222-8282, extension 2873. The information will also be posted on the Board’s website at www.tcdsb.org or www.tcdsb.org/weather.htm. The Transportation Department will post this information on its website at http://www.schoolbus.to/c_home.asp
Inclement Weather On days when the weather is inclement, the students may be permitted to enter
the building at 8:15 am. On such days, the recess periods may be indoor and those students who stay for lunch will be supervised in the building. Weather conditions must be particularly severe, cold weather alone does not warrant an early entry into the building or indoor recess periods. Those decisions will be made accordingly. We believe that children profit greatly from recess breaks as they get out into the fresh air and burn off some energy in play activities. This will make them more alert and ready to continue their studies when they come in. It is important for children, particularly the younger children in the primary grades, to come to school dressed properly for the weather. A reminder to everyone that students who are well enough to be at school are well enough to go out for recess. We do not have personnel to supervise students who wish to stay in for recess due to illness. If they are too ill to go out for recess, then they should be home for the day. This will allow for quicker recovery and less teaching and learning time lost to illness.
Attendance, Punctuality and Preparation
The Education Act states that students must attend school regularly and punctually. Parents are to notify the school (416) 393-5290 of a child’s absence. You may call anytime and leave a message on the answering machine. Students who arrive late for school must check in at the main office to ensure safe arrival and to help in keeping accurate attendance profiles. Attendance referrals will be sent to the Social Worker and persistent tardiness may result in progressive discipline. Students are expected to arrive prior to the bell. All students are to arrive prepared to work and learn. Preparation includes the completion of daily assignments that are done to the best of the individual student’s ability. Preparation also implies that the student devotes appropriate time to study in advance of test situations.
Parking
A reminder that the school parking
lot is for staff only. Please do not use it for parking as we do not have enough spots for staff. Our students
have been instructed not to enter the parking lot for safety reasons. Father Glaba has graciously volunteered the use of the church parking lot for our parents. Please observe and respect the “in” and “out” flow in the church parking lot. There is
absolutely NO PARKING in the handicapped spaces, or in the fire route at the front of the school. The fine is substantial and we need to have those spaces clear for their appropriate use by those that need them. A reminder to all that Renault is strictly a “Drop Off Kiss and Ride”, and there is absolutely no parking permitted within the sign boundaries. Everyone is encouraged to use
the PSP in the school parking lot. Police and
Parking Enforcement have assured us that
Renault will be closely monitored for proper
use.
Medication
Principals, teachers and support staff of the TCDSB are not permitted to administer any type of prescription medication during the school day, unless we have written, authorization signed by
you the parent, and the prescribing physician. The forms to dispense any medication must be updated on a regular basis and are available from the school principal. Please be advised that staff in TCDSB schools will not dispense non-prescription medications to students. Students who need “puffers” should have one at school and at home. All medications will be stored in the main office. Please notify the school if your child suffers from any type of allergy.
A Matter of Safety Now that the winter season has arrived, there are a few issues that need to be addressed. 1. Please ensure that your children
are dressed appropriately for the cold weather. They should also have mittens or gloves, a hat, a winter coat, boots and possibly a scarf. Unless we have extreme wind chill factors, children will be out for recess. Label your child’s belongings to avoid any mix-ups with other children.
2. We strongly encourage you to send a pair of shoes to be kept at school so that children can wear them after removing their boots. Children will not be allowed to wear their boots
inside the classroom. If your child wears his/her running shoes to school, they will have to be removed before entering the classes. Therefore a second pair of running shoes should be used for
gym classes. No outside shoes are to be worn
in classes. 3. Snow pants are also encouraged. It is impossible
to keep young children off the snow. Snow pants will keep them dry outside.
4. Please reinforce what we are emphasizing at school; that is, that snow must remain on the ground. Once snow is picked up, it is easily made into a snowball and thrown at others. Snowball throwing can lead to serious injury.
Curriculum
Progress Reports
Progress reports were sent home on November
12, 2011. We hope all of you had a chance to meet with your child’s teacher for a Parent-Teacher Conference on the evenings of Wednesday, November 14th and Thursday, November 15th, 2012. If you have not seen your child’s teacher, please feel free to contact the teacher for an appointment. Please note that communication is very important regarding your child’s progress. Remember if you are unable to make a phone call, another effective tool of communication is your child’s agenda. Please check your child’s agenda on a nightly basis and sign it as a confirmation that you have seen your child’s agenda. This will certify that your child has completed all required homework to the best of his/her ability and is therefore ready for school the next day. Thank you for your support in setting up your children for academic success.
Library News
Mrs. Carlson would like to thank all those students and parents who supported the Book Fair held on November 12-15. The Book Fair was a big success. A percentage of the sales made from the Book Fair will go towards acquiring new resources for the library which in turn helps to support literacy development at All Saints. The Book Fair raised a total of approximately $12,000.00. The students of All Saints can once again look
forward to the return of the ever so popular Forest of Reading program. The Forest of Reading program encourages a love of reading among young people and it also helps to develop recognition for Canadian authors and Canadian books. Students in grade one through to grade three will enjoy reading the 10 nominees for the 2012-2013 school year, and they will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite book in the early spring.
Also, the All Saints Reading Club will start up again in January with students in the junior and intermediate grades enjoying the great selection of Forest of Reading nominees in their age category. Please stay tuned for more details regarding the Reading Club. We are hoping for yet another wonderful literary experience this year.

Extra-Curricular Activities
All Saints 2012 Cross Country
This September, as students were preparing to return to school and get back into routine, we were
also preparing students to take part in the Fall Cross Country Meets. Practices and early morning try-outs began the second week of school. The enthusiasm and interest from the students who participated in the Cross Country try-outs was outstanding. We would like to thank all of the students from grades 3 to 8 who tried out for the Cross Country Team. You should all be commended for your perseverance and hard work in attending the 8 am early morning practices. A very special thank you to all of the dedicated coaches who trained the students: Ms. Carlson, Ms. Fabbro, Ms. Febbraro, Mlle. Ferrarelli, Mr. Goles, Ms. Makhlouf, Ms. Mathias, Ms. Nespolo, Mme. Boys’ Softball
On Wednesday October 3rd the boys’ softball team played a tournament at Westway Park. Our first game was against Fr. Serra. It was a very exciting game and the boys battled hard but came up
short. Our second game was against St. Marcellus, just like the first game, the boys were off to a slow start but dug deep and showed a lot of heart and battled back for a victory. With one game
remaining, the boys needed a win to move into the finals. Their next opponent was Transfiguration, they were two evenly matched teams but after regulation play, Transfiguration came out on top with a narrow victory. It was a short but great season and all the boys are excited about next year. We would like to thank all the coaches, Mr. Marchesan, and Mr. Howlett for all their time and hard work. As well as all the parents who help drive the boys to and from the tournament. The members of the team are: Andrew Broome, Noah Distasi, Damil Bravo, Allen Jeremiah, Simon Sybydlo, Ryan Distasi, Brendan Sterkaj, Craig Maslan, Joshua Catalanotto, Jevon Minto, Jordan Broome, Matteo Costantini, Devin D’Gama, Lui Gaglardi and Michael Imbrogno

SCHOOL RAFFLE:
Last year the Fall Raffle fundraiser brought in $15,704.00 in profit for our school,
which is phenomenal but we could have earned more if we did not have to spend
money on the great prizes we offered. This year the fundraiser will take place on
February 8th
to the 25th
, 2013 inclusive. The draw will take place on February 27th
,
2013.
Therefore this year in preparation for our 2 largest fundraisers, our 2nd Annual
Raffle and our 4th
Annual Spring Awakening Dinner Dance, we are asking parents
who may work for a large corporation, who may be self-employed, or who know
people who can help, if they are able to make any donations/contributions to assist
with the cost of these prizes. We would really appreciate your help.
If you are able to assist in any way simply send us an email to
[email protected] and we will be in touch with you to let you know how you
can help.
2012 SPRING AWAKENING DINNER DANCE:
We will be having our 4th annual Spring Awakening Dinner Dance (celebrating
the school’s 50th
Anniversary) on Friday, April 26th

Thank You Thank you to all the students, parents, staff, alumni, former staff and community members for your participation and support of the All Saints 50th Anniversary Celebrations. Your gifts of time and presence made all of these events extremely memorable and a huge success. We thank Bishop Boissonneau, Father Andrej and all the clergy and staff of All Saints Parish for making our Liturgy of the Eucharist so meaningful. Our reception was filled with great energy that came from wonderful school memories and old friendships rooted in our Faith Story. Our Tree Planting , Commemorative Window Painting of Jesus and the Children and Plaque Sales were symbolic events that celebrate visually the first 50 years of Catholic Education at this site with hope and promise for the years that follow. We thank all members of the 50th Anniversary Committee for all the pre-planning and time dedicated to ensuring the success of this event. Committee members include: Mrs. Bottero, Mrs. Bova, Mrs. Cerullo, Mrs. De Franco, Miss DiDodo, Mrs. Di Paolo, Mrs. Fabbro, Miss Ferrarelli, Mme. Ianni-Bastone, Mrs. Jannetta, Mrs. Leonetti, Miss Makhlouf, Mme. Mastronardi- Rose, Mrs. McCutcheon, Mr. Morsillo, Mrs. Nanowska, Mrs. Nespolo, Mrs. Rush, Mrs. Schmidt, Mrs. Tenuta, Miss Torres, Mr. Van Hezewyk, and Miss Valaitis. As we move ahead in this special year, we look forward to an Anniversary Dance in the new year and continuing our Pay It Forward, 50 Acts of Kindness, Cool to Be Kind Project. We thank you for your spirit and involvement in all of these anniversary activities.
Student Leaders Update
The student leaders have been working diligently to implement the 50 Acts of Kindness initiative that began with the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of All Saints. The focus of this movement is to pass on random acts of kindness on a daily basis. Each time that someone demonstrates a kind act, they pass on a “Pay it Forward” bracelet to the person that they were kind to. The goal is for the bracelets to continue to be passed on throughout the school community, students and staff members alike. In doing so, we are creating a school community based on kindness and respect. In the future, the student leaders will be preparing assemblies that highlight the Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations, as well as continuing to promote the “Cool to be Kind” project. Connected to the C2BK project, two student leaders, Karina Dubrovskaya and Noah Distasi, attended the TCDSB Bullying Symposium last week, where they took part in a day centered around anti-bullying. One of the upcoming projects they learned about at the Symposium, and that the All Saints Community will be taking part in is “Feathers Against Bullying.” Stay tuned for future information regarding this activity.

Teen Fine Forgiveness Program at Toronto Public Library Toronto Public Library is offering teens a chance to have their library fines forgiven up to $20. If you work with, or
know of teens who might benefit from this program, please let them know they can download and print a fine
forgiveness coupon at www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/teens<http://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/teens>
Or they can just drop into any branch of Toronto Public Library and ask staff to give them a coupon. The campaign runs
to December 31, 2012.
We are hoping that teens who have stayed away from the library because of unpaid fines will return to the fold!
If you have questions about the program, please feel free to get in touch with Ken Sparling,
