Lost and Found Articles We would ask that you encourage your child to check the lost and found articles at school if they are missing articles of clothing. The pile of lost clothing in the lost and found has been increasing. If these articles are not claimed by the end of the school year, they will be donated to charity. You may also call the school and make an appointment to come and check the lost and found articles. Let’s make this a priority!

Learning Advantage Program Get a head start on the next school year!

We recently sent home the order form for the

Learning Advantage program of support materials

for students.

All books are aligned with the Ontario curriculum expectations for each grade, and provide units on mathematics, science, health and English that are fully Canadian (with regard to money, measurement, social studies, spelling etc.). They have parent information pages, follow-up activities and family focus. The cost of each book is $20 including tax. This is a savings of $1.00-$4.00 from retail stores and online.

You can also visit www.learningadvantage.ca for

further information and a tour of the books.

ALL SAINTS FUN FAIR! The All Saints Fun Fair was held on Saturday May 31st, and to say the least, it was a HUGE success! We could not have asked for better weather, and our families enjoyed many activities such as jumping castles, slides, a petting zoo, pony rides, and games. There was also a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, hot dogs, cotton candy and popcorn. Many of our families enjoyed the Rummage Sale, and the Bake Sale, and participated in the cake decorating contest. All in all, it was a fabulous day that created many memories for the students and families of All Saints. We would like to thank our CSAC for organizing and running the entire event, especially Mrs. Capobianco. The hard work and effort that went into planning and making this day such a memorable event for our students and families of All Saints has not gone unnoticed. Thank you for putting smiles on the childrens’ faces and bringing the community together! The efforts and dedication of the CSAC and all the

volunteers raised approximately $10,700.00 – a staggering amount that will benefit all the students of All Saints.

Thank you!!!

Safe Schools

Visitors to the School

Toronto Catholic District School

Board policy states that all visitors to

the school MUST report to the office. This is foremost to ensure the safety of all students. In an effort to promote

the independence of the students and to ensure the integrity of programs by minimizing interruptions during class time, we request that students arrive prepared for the school day with all the items they require (homework, lunch, physical education clothing, musical instruments etc.). If you would like to contact your child’s teacher, you may do so through the school office. Please try to make after school arrangements before school.

Allergen Aware

Please take special note that we have children in our school who have very serious allergies to nut products. According to Sabrina’s Law, we must make every effort to maintain a nut free environment in order to help keep these children safe. We ask that you not bring in or send in any food items to be shared with other students in the class. Please note that baked goods and treats are not permitted for birthday celebrations. Please consider other options that do not involve any food. We apologize for the inconvenience; however, we are certain you will agree that these measures are necessary in order to ensure the safety and welfare of our children.

Personal Property The school does not take any responsibility for the loss or theft of personal items brought onto the school premises by students. The school will therefore, not reimburse or replace lost or stolen articles, under any circumstances. This will include all articles of clothing (label items with a marker); personal school supplies such as fancy or expensive pens, markers, binders and pencil cases, etc.; simple or electronic toys; calculators, laptops, iPod’s, CD’s, etc. Please note that collector cards of any kind are not permitted, in addition to all cell phones and any other social media devices. These items will be immediately confiscated by staff and brought to the Principal’s attention. We ask both parents and students for their full co-operation in this matter. (Please note that the Board’s insurance policy does not cover property owned by staff or students).

Safe Arrival and Departure

We continue to remind you to contact the school before 8:30 a.m. if your child is going to be absent from school. If we are unable to take your call, you can leave a message on our answering machine. Please ensure that we have a current emergency number where you can be contacted. If you are picking up your child early, please send a note to your child’s teacher. Please be sure to report to the office to sign them out. If you are returning before the end of the day, please

sign your child back in at the office. All students on

buses must ride the buses to and from school

every day.

Inclement Weather

On days when the weather is inclement, the students may be permitted to enter the building at 8:30 a.m. On such days, the recess periods may be indoors and those students who stay for lunch will be supervised in the building. Indoor recess is usually a result of severe weather conditions; cold weather alone does not warrant an early entry into the building or indoor recess periods. Those decisions will be made accordingly. We believe that children profit greatly from recess breaks as they get out into the fresh air and burn off some energy in play activities. This will make them more alert and ready to continue their studies when they come in. It is important for children, particularly the younger children in the primary grades, to come to school

dressed properly for the weather. A reminder to

everyone that students who are well enough to

be at school are well enough to go out for

recess. We do not have the personnel to supervise students who wish to stay in for recess due to illness. If they are too ill to go out for recess, then they should be home for the day. This will allow for quicker recovery and less teaching and learning time lost to illness.

Attendance, Punctuality and Preparation

The Education Act states that students must attend school regularly and punctually. Parents are to notify the school (416) 393-5290 of a child’s absence. You may call anytime and leave a message on the answering machine. Students who arrive late for school must check in at the main

Page 5: AAllll SSaaiinnttss CChhrroonniiccllee · 2014. 6. 2. · On behalf of the Administration and the entire staff at All AAllll SSaaiinnttss CChhrroonniiccllee Maayy / JJuunnee 22001144

office to ensure safe arrival and to help in keeping accurate attendance profiles. Attendance referrals will be sent to the Social Worker and persistent tardiness may result in school detentions. Students are expected to arrive prior to the bell. All students are to arrive prepared to work and learn. Preparation includes the completion of daily assignments that are done to the best of the individual student’s ability. Preparation also implies that the student devotes appropriate time to study in advance of test situations.

Families Not Returning To All Saints

September 2014

This is just a gentle reminder to all families that if there is anyone who will not be returning to All Saints Catholic School for September 2014, (excluding our Grade Eight graduates), it would be appreciated if you could confirm that information in writing as soon as possible.

Removal of Personal Belongings

Over the course of the month of June, students are asked to gradually remove personal belongings from the school. Please remind students not to leave the removal of any personal belongings to the last day of school. It is far more helpful to remove personal items at the time when they are no longer required at school. Thank you for your support in regards to this matter.

Class Placements for September 2014: To reduce the class sizes in our province, the Ministry of Education has mandated that each class from Grade 1 to Grade 3 have no more than 20 students and that there is an average of approximately 26 students in each class from Grades 4-8. The current model has been created with the projected enrolment for the 2014-2015 academic year that is within the Ministry’s

parameters. Please note that with additional

student registrations and other fluctuations in

enrolment, classes may need to be reorganized

in September 2014. Teachers have collaborated to create heterogeneous class lists for September 2014 with consideration of learning styles, social groupings, behavioural needs, English as a Second Language, female/male balance, academic abilities

and special education delivery. As a final

reminder please remember that all classroom

placements for your child are tentative until

September 30, 2014.

First Day Procedure for Tuesday, September 2, 2014

The first day of school for the 2014-2015 academic

year will be Tuesday, September 2, 2014. Students are asked to go directly to the school yard where class lists will be posted on the walls. We ask all the children to meet their teachers at their

posted grade levels at the bell time of 8:30 a.m.

Activity Fee

All Saints Catholic Elementary School has always endeavored to provide an excellent academic program within which many rich activities are woven to give our children a well-rounded educational experience. In order to provide such experiences, we require funds through fundraising. Over the last several years, our school has been quite active in organizing school fundraisers. Our Catholic School Advisory Council (CSAC) has been instrumental in coordinating these activities that support our children’s education. We are fortunate to have an enthusiastic group of parent volunteers and community at All Saints. Without you, we would not be able to provide this to our children. This upcoming school year is no different. In September, the school in collaboration with CSAC will be

continuing a Student Activity Fee. The purpose of this student activity fee is to help off-set some of the expenses that the school incurs over the course of the year. CSAC has been very supportive and generous in providing these monies each year through several fundraisers. With this annual one-time fee, we will be able to reduce the number of fundraisers the CSAC organizes. The

Student Activity Fee will cover standard yearly

costs of Transportation for Class Trips, Extra

Curricular Transportation Support, Scientists in

the School (1 per class), Divisional

Presentations, Sacrament Enhancement, SK

and Grade 8 Graduation Enhancements/Awards,

Physical Education Equipment, Excursion

Support, Circle Of Friends Support, Special

Education Program Support, Instrumental Music

Support, Teacher Classroom Funds and

Curriculum Supplements, Library Support and

School Equipment Support.

Details of the student activity fee are as follows:

Parents/Guardians with 1 child - $40 total;

Parents/Guardians with 2 children - $60 total;

Parents/Guardians with 3 children or more - $80

total

Page 6: AAllll SSaaiinnttss CChhrroonniiccllee · 2014. 6. 2. · On behalf of the Administration and the entire staff at All AAllll SSaaiinnttss CChhrroonniiccllee Maayy / JJuunnee 22001144

Please note, CSAC initiatives are separate from Student Council fundraising activities & Social Justice Initiatives and some specific class trips/activities may require a request for additional funds. In September, we will be sending another notice to our parent community with further details on payment, due date and logistics. We would like to thank you in advance for your support.

Appropriate Dress

A brief note of thanks to all the students, and parents who are fully respecting and enjoying the Appropriate Dress Code at All Saints Catholic School. The majority of our students are proud to be affiliated with All Saints and wear their appropriate colours proudly every day. We would like to send out a gentle reminder to everyone around our appropriate dress code to ensure that everyone, including all of our new students are aware of the expectations of all students attending All Saints Catholic Elementary School. For the rest of the school year and into next year, we will be focussing on ensuring compliance with the appropriate dress code.

Parking

A reminder that the school parking lot is for staff only. Please do not use it for parking as we do not have enough spots for staff. Our students have been instructed not to enter the parking lot for safety reasons. Father Glaba has graciously volunteered the use of the church parking lot for our parents. Please observe and respect the “in” and “out” flow in

the church parking lot. There is absolutely NO

PARKING in the handicapped spaces at the front of the school. The fine is substantial and we need to have those spaces clear for their appropriate use by those that need them. A reminder to all that Renault is strictly a “Drop Off Kiss and Ride”, and there is absolutely no parking permitted within the sign boundaries. Everyone is encouraged to use the PSP in the school parking lot.

Police and Parking Enforcement have assured us

that Renault will be closely monitored for proper

use.

Medication

Principals, teachers and support staff of the TCDSB are not permitted to administer any type of prescription medication during the school day, unless we have written, authorization signed by you

the parent, and the prescribing physician. The forms to dispense any medication must be updated on a regular basis and are available from the school principal. Please be advised that staff in TCDSB schools will not dispense non-prescription medications to students. Students who need “puffers” should have one at school and at home. All medications will be stored in the main office. Please notify the school if your child suffers from any type of allergy.

Curriculum

Report Cards

Report cards will be sent home on Monday, June 24th, 2014.

Library News

As we approach the end of the school year, we would like to ask for your cooperation in returning library books and book bags to the library by Wednesday, June 12th. Please also remember to return book bags, as they may be re-labelled and re-used again next year. Thank you kindly!

Volunteer Tea

On the afternoon of May 22nd, All Saints opened their doors and warmly welcomed our volunteers into the gymnasium. The afternoon tea was a small thank you from the staff and students to the volunteers who have assisted the school on numerous occasions throughout the school year. During the tea, volunteers were entertained by musical performances by the Gr. 7 strings, poetry and a dance and song compilation by the choir. All of the performances were beautiful and truly reflected the gratitude that all the staff and students wanted to convey to the volunteers of All Saints. Without all of our volunteers, All Saints would not be the special place that it is. Thank you to everyone who volunteered at the school this year, your efforts and talents are greatly appreciated.

Junior W5H Update

The Junior W5H team has wrapped up the 2014 season with an impressive and well earned record. The team started

practicing in November for the season. They willingly gave up most of their lunch recesses until the competitions in February, to practice as a team. As a result of this dedication, they had an undefeated season culminating in winning the City Finals at the Catholic Education Centre on February 26. Congratulations go out to Sophie Asselstine, Grace Bogdani, David Cho, Michael Dadaro, Barathy Iyathurai, Angelina Motta and Cristina Saverino. The coaches would like to also thank their parents for their support throughout the season and to Mrs. Manco for her spiritual guidance throughout.

Special Olympics

On May 27th, All Saints participated in the TCDSB Special Olympic Tournament at Varsity Stadium. This event is always an inspirational and fun event for all involved, athletes, coaches and spectators. The motto of the Ontario Special Olympics is “Let me win and if I do not win, let me be brave in the attempt”. The students ran in 50m sprint races and were indeed brave in their attempts and all were proud of their accomplishments. Congratulations to Dennis Bogdani, Luke Castaldo, Alberto Cuesta, Daniel Laconte, Kinga Rnadzio and Philip Vasola for showing us all what success truly is.

Eco School

The Green Team has been very busy the last couple

of months organizing our Earth Hour in March, our City of Toronto clean up day in April, and our classroom audits in April. On March 28th students and

staff participated in Earth Hour from 10:00am – 11:00am. We closed our classroom lights, corridor lights, and any electronics, and opened our blinds to let the sunshine in. Earth Hour was a great success. Our Clean Up day went well with students cleaning up our school grounds, All Saints Church’s green areas, and also our intermediate students travelled to La Rose Park and cleaned up that green area. Students participated in the clean up for 20 minutes. We also conducted our classroom audits which allowed us to see that we are recycling, composting, and turning off electronic equipment when they are not being used. We look forward to maintaining our Gold Eco-School status for 2013-2014 school year.

Jump Rope for Heart On a beautiful and sunny Friday May 9th, the entire school population took part in the annual Jump Rope for Heart Day. The students were pumped–up by the music and demonstrated their skills and tricks. Each grade skipped for 30 minutes to raise funds for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Thank you very much for your support in this important cause. Funds raised help to support research, education and place defibrillators in public buildings. Funds raised also earn All Saints points for sporting equipment and electronic items for the school. Fund raising prizes for the students will be distributed by mid-June. All Saints raised a total of over $6.000.00 in support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation – Fantastic!

All Saints Art Club We would like to congratulate all the students who were part of the Art Club at All Saints this year. Thank you for your passion and dedication. Due to the high interest, there were three sessions of the Art Club taking place at our school. The final session will conclude on Tuesday, June 3rd, 2014.

These sessions were arranged for the students who were new to the program and for the students who participated in the Art Club previously. The students explored and implemented the fundamental elements of design and its principles. They had an opportunity to develop creativity, aesthetic awareness, use of the creative process and problem-solving strategies as well as to take an innovative approach to a creative design challenge.

Depending on the level, they were challenged to create a final product such as a detailed pencils drawing, water colour composition, or a canvas painting that reflected the creative process. Final compositions were created based on several pencil sketches developed by the students in their sketchbooks.

Congratulations!

Intermediate Boys and Girls Soccer

On Thursday May 29 and Friday May 30, 2014, the Boys and Girls Intermediate Soccer teams played in the West Region Soccer Tournament. It is with great honour that we announce that both teams won their respective Divisional Tournament. The Boys tied St Jude 1-1. They beat St Gregory by 1-0. All Saints beat St Andrews and St Marcellus 4-0 and 5-0 respectively. The Girls played against St Jude in their first game and tied 0-0. Their second game was against St Gregory and also tied 0-0. In their third game against St Marcellus, our team beat them 4-0. By 2:30 p.m., three schools were tied based on their points accumulated throughout the day. In order for All Saints to win the Divisional, the Girls needed to beat St Andrew by 7 goals. With great anticipation, parents and opposing team schools watched our last game. It was certainly a nail biter but the girls played with focus and scored four goals in the first four minutes. As the minutes passed ever so quickly, the girls went on to score an additional 4 goals to beat St Andrew 8-0 and to become the West Regional Soccer Champions! On behalf of all the coaches, we want to congratulate the Girls and Boys not only for their win but for their inspirational teamwork, focus and best of all - great sportsmanship. Congratulations to the following team members for their hard work and dedication and to the following teachers who coached these respective teams. As well, a big thank you to the parents who volunteered to drive our teams to the tournament.

EQAO Testing

Our Grade 3 and 6 students are participating in

the Education Quality and Accountability

Office’s (EQAO’s) Assessment of Reading,

Writing and Mathematics from May 26th to June

5th 2014. The assessment is administered province-wide and is developed by Ontario teachers and assessment experts to reflect curriculum expectations. We thank all of our Grade three and six teachers for their efforts in supporting our students during this testing period.

CAT– 4 Testing

Our Grades 2, 5 and 7 students participated in

CAT- 4 testing from May 23rd to June 2nd 2014. The results of this testing will not be used for report card purposes. The data provides individual student, school and system indicators of academic performance which can help in the planning of a good teaching program for students by identifying areas of strength and weakness. Individual students’ and this school’s results will be available in the Fall of the year 2014. We thank all of our grade two, five and seven teachers for their efforts in supporting our students during this testing period.

First Reconciliation and First Communion

“Rejoice with me I have found my sheep who

was lost”

On Thursday, May 1st, after prayer and preparation, All Saints’ Grade 2 students gathered at the Church to celebrate God’s forgiveness

through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Their parents presented their children to a priest for him to hear their First Confession. Reconciliation is about the story of the “Good Shepherd” who welcomes with joy the lost sheep and issues the invitation to others.

“He took bread, and broke it, and gave it to

them.”

Beginning May 3rd through to June 8th, our students have received their First Holy Communion at All Saints Church during weekend masses. Celebrating the First Eucharist allowed the students entry for the first time, into the full celebration of the Eucharist. They are sent forth, filled with the Holy Spirit, to continue to share in this holy meal. In receiving their

first Eucharist children learned that Jesus will always be with them, will help strengthen them, and that He loved them very much. It was a memorable milestone for the students and their families as they grow in their faith. We thank Father Andre Glaba, Catena Manco, who delivered a Reconciliation/Communion retreat for students, and the parents for preparing students to receive these special sacraments. Congratulations to the students who received their sacraments. May you always feel Jesus’ love and presence in your lives as He guides your way and nourishes your faith!

Confirmation

“Jesus sent us the Holy Spirit to bring

us closer together in the family of the

Church.”

Our Grade eight students will receive the sacrament of Confirmation on Tuesday, June 10th. They are making an adult decision to be fully integrated into the Catholic Church Community. May the Holy Spirit guide them in their lives. We would like to thank: Father Glaba, our teachers and the volunteers from the church for preparing the students and organizing this special event. We would especially like to thank Mr. Bressan, Mr. Goles, Mme Nobre-Peres, and Mrs. Stellato for their assistance in preparing the students for this very important sacrament.

Grade Eight Graduation

On June 18th, our Grade eight students will bid their last formal farewell to All Saints School. We will bid our final farewell to the graduates in our “Clap

Out”. Our graduates will walk through the school to the respectful applause of the rest of the school lined up outside their classrooms. We look forward to this very emotional time for all! Staff and students will participate in day-long activities after this farewell. A formal graduation lunch will be held at Julius Banquet Hall followed by a dance. Later that evening we will convene at All Saints Church with the parents to celebrate Mass with Father Andrezej Glaba and members of the Parish Team. The Graduation Mass will be followed

by our Annual Awards Presentations and refreshments.

Rumba, Swing, and Waltz. The students have been engaged in creative academic dance which focuses on character development. The Dancing Classrooms has been a very rewarding experience for the students, as they have made significant improvements and have gained an appreciation for dance and the components involved in partner dancing. Butterflies in the classroom This spring, as part of the Science curriculum, the Grade 2 classes had the opportunity to witness the miraculous life cycle of a butterfly. Each class was provided with 20 caterpillars and a “home” for them to stay in. Throughout the weeks, the students were able to experience the caterpillars first hand, taking a close look through magnifying glasses and even holding them in their hands! Over time, they were able to see the process of chrysalis and the metamorphosis of their beloved caterpillars. On a bright spring day, before their very eyes, the students observed the hatching of the butterflies. It was truly a remarkable experience to witness first hand. Once all of the butterflies were hatched, a celebration was held to release the butterflies back into nature. Through prayer, song, a large circle of students, teachers and administrators, approximately 100 butterflies were released in the school yard. A feeling of elation overcame all as the butterflies made their way into the sky. Every so often, our students will see a butterfly fluttering in the school yard saying hello. As they say, you always go back to where you came from.

All Saints 2014 Track and Field

This spring, our All Saints’ Track and Field team prepared to compete at the Divisional Track and Field tournament. Practices and try-outs began in April. The enthusiasm and interest from the students who participated in the Track and Field try-outs was outstanding. We would like to thank all of the students from grades 3 to 8 who tried out for the Track and Field team this year. You should all be commended for your perseverance and hard work. A very special thank you to all of the dedicated coaches who trained our All Saints’ Track team this year! We are also very grateful to all of our parents for their continued support, by attending the Track and Field meets, supporting and cheering us on! The students who represented our school at all of the Track and Field meets did so with an eager and positive attitude. Each student competed with a tremendous amount of effort, dedication and perseverance. The Divisional Meet took place on Tuesday, May 13th, 2014 at Centennial Park. The All Saints Cross Country Team had yet another excellent performance, where 40 students advanced to the Regional Meet, which took place later on that same week on Thursday, May 15th, 2014, also at

Centennial Park. At the City Cross Country Finals, on Tuesday, May 27th, 2014, 12 students from our school participated at Varsity Stadium. We are proud of the continued progress that we have made again this year in Track and Field, and we look forward to another excellent season during the next school year!
