Our vision

anadolu agency (aa) was founded to herald “the voice of anadolu” to the world in the era of the “National struggle” ahead of the foundation of the Republic of turkey.

aa started broadcasting its news on april 6, 1920 and witnessed every moment of turkey’s developments. aa is stepping forward on the way to broadcast in 11 languages and become one of the five most influential agencies in the world.

Within this scope aa started broadcasting in english, arabic, bcs languages, Russian, Kurdish and french alongside turkish. investing on the latest technology, aa has become the center of attention as it used the social media effectively.

aa is transmitting the developments in the growing economy of turkey alongside the world to its subscribers via aa financial News terminal and trains high quality personnel in aa News academy in accordance with its new vision.

aa produces daily 1500 news stories, 1900 photos, 250 videos and meets the news demand of the media with its “Reliable, impartial, ethical, fast” journalism motto. aa will move towards its mission to become a global news agency in light of its “centennial Vision” adopted in 2012.

Editor’s Deska meeting to discuss the agenda takes place every morning at the editor’s Desk at the headquarters in Ankara and regional directors and representatives of AA’s foreign offices join the meeting via video conference where managers of all news departments are present.the agenda is assessed and discussions are carried out regarding the news to be presented to the members at editor’s Desk. from time to time the editor’s Desk hosts ministers and foreign politicians. the editors address questions to the guests and receive their opinion regarding the agenda.

International Coopearationanadolu agency cooperates with afp (france), Dpa(Germany), itaR-tass (Russia), KYODO (Japan) as well as the news agencies of more than 60 countries and thousands of news reports flow to AA. Anadolu Agency conducted the term presidency of Asia-Pacific News Agency Union (OANA) between 2010-2013. aa is also among the founders of the association of turkish speaking countries News agencies and the association of balkan News agencies (abNa) in addition to being a member of european alliance of News agencies (eaNa), the alliance of mediterranean News agencies (amaN) and the alliance of black sea New agencies (bsaNNa). aa renews its cooperation agreements with the international news agencies and cooperates with the news agencies from every corner of the world.

War Journalism Certificate ProgramThe News Academy is also privileged by being the first to start a War Journalism Certificate Program in Turkey and in the region. It aims to train operational correspondents to serve in warfare, natural disasters and emergencies and is being given in cooperation with the police academy who is well known internationally in the field of security and with trainer support from turkish armed forces.

the anadolu agency personnel is also trained in the program which is open to applications within the country or from abroad. the anadolu agency does not assign duties to correspondents who have not taken the war journalism training in war, conflict and natural disaster zones.

• acts responsibly in covering terrorism, acts of violence and natural disasters bearing in mind the public interest in full and accurate reporting, universal human rights, national security and public order.

• Refuses to publish stories or visual material that will be deemed discriminatory on the basis of class, race, language, religion, gender, and region that will generate feelings of hostility among people and further incite them to violence and terror.

• abstains from all sorts of reporting that will generate feelings of hatred, fear, chaos, hostility and panic among people.

• takes great care about the quality and style of its stories that they do not encourage violence, spread fear, traumatize, damage the principles of equality and justice, degrade human dignity and foster discrimination.

• covers stories of terrorism and acts of violence without exaggeration, based on reliable information and as far as is possible having them confirmed by authorized sources; and abides by the broadcast bans imposed by legal authorities.

• tries not to report the names of those who lost their lives in accidents, disasters or acts of terror before their next of kin are informed.

• accepts the sanctity of human life and avoids running pictures or video footage that will hurt the dignity of victims and cause further suffering to their families.

the history of anadolu agency (aa) is almost identical to that of the Republic of turkey. having been founded on april 6, 1920, 17 days before the turkish Grand National Assembly convened first time, the Anadolu Agency helped announce the first legislation by Assembly that established the Republic. anadolu agency witnessed all stages of the National struggle, the War of independence and reforms of the Republic.

after istanbul came under occupation on march 16, 1920 and the Ottoman parliament was annulled, mustafa Kemal ataturk called on all provinces to hold elections for a new parliament to be established in ankara. several intellectuals, who realized that they could not stay in istanbul any longer, tried to join the National struggle. this development paved the way for the foundation of anadolu agency.

those intellectuals left istanbul for ankara in two convoys. Journalist Yunus Nadi (abalioglu) and writer halide edip (adivar) met in Geyve on march 31. During their meeting at the train station, they decided that it was necessary to establish “an agency organization” in ankara as soon as possible. they agreed to name the agency as “anadolu agency”.

it was proposed to establish the anadolu agency at the “school of agriculture” which also housed mustafa Kemal ataturk’s headquarters. On april 6, 1920, the anadolu agency was founded.

the anadolu agency corporation was established on march 1, 1925, after ataturk assigned some of his closest friends to transform anadolu agency into the format of a Western news agency. the anadolu agency acquired an autonomous status with an unprecedented organizational chart unseen even in the Western countries back in the days.

Anadolu Agency carried out a difficult task during the War of independence. it informed the people of the country in war who did not know what was going on in the rest of the world. it also struggled against submissive attitude of some foreign and turkish newspapers in istanbul.

the newly founded agency also had to defend the National struggle in the world, inform the world public opinion on turkey’s rightful demands and act carefully against tricks of some circles.
