    A2ADVANCEDPORTFOLIO EVALUATION

    Inwhatwaysdoesyourproductusecodesandconventionsofrealmediaproducts?

    Televisiondocumentariesfollowacertainstyleandformatthatisrecognisedbyviewersasasignof

    quality.Fromtheonset,wewatchedandanalysedanumberofexistingtextsinorder

    togainknowledgeofthecodesandconventionswithinthedocumentarygenre.Inour

    production,we

    wanted

    to

    follow

    as

    many

    conventions

    as

    possible

    so

    that

    wecouldensureprofessionalisminourdocumentaryopening.Through

    watchingexistingtextssuchasSuperSizeMe,directedbyMorgan

    Spurlock,BBCHorizonsIsAlcoholworsethanEcstasy?,andChannel4s

    Embarrassingteenbodies wewereabletogatherbasicknowledgeof

    Forouropening,wechosetousespedupfootageof

    studentswalkingthroughcollege,withtypedstatistics

    appearingatthebottomofthescreen.Thisfootagealong

    withtheupbeatmusicgivesafastpacedbeginningtothe

    documentary,whichIfeelisappropriateforourtarget

    audience.Oftenindocumentariestheopeningcontainsa

    rapidmontageoffootage,givinganinsightintowhatwill

    beincludedintheprogramme.Wefollowedthisconven

    tionby

    using

    statistics

    related

    to

    our

    topic,

    as

    well

    as

    us

    ingfootagefromoneofourvoxpopsandoneofourformal

    interviewsbeforethetitleappeared.

    Wewentagainstsomeoftheconventionswhen

    choosinghowourtitleshouldbepresented.Thetitle

    sequenceweusedhadapowerfulvisualclipinthe

    backgroundwiththetitleofthedocumentary

    appearingonthetop.We

    used

    a

    simple,

    bold

    font

    in

    a

    contrastingcolourtothe

    backgroundsoitstoodout.

    Manydocumentaries,suchasBBCHorizonillustratedbelow,placetheirtitleagainstaplain

    background;wechosenottodothisbecausewefeltatopicrelevantbackgroundwouldbemore

    interestingforourtargetaudience.Also,asmuchofour

    backgroundfootagewasnotofalcoholandbingedrinking

    itself,includingthatshownintheopeningofthedocumen

    tary,wewantedtoensurethatoutstudentsknewstraight

    awaywhatthetopicofourdocumentarywas.Verbal

    audience

    feedback

    has

    suggested

    that

    this

    technique

    was

    effective.

    Wenoticed,indocumentariesthatwewatched,thatthenondiegeticbackgroundmusicisusually

    lyricless,repetitiveandupbeat.Tokeepourdocumentarylightheartedandengageourtarget

    audience,wefollowedthisconventionbyusingnoncopyrightmusicfromtheAppleIMac

    computers,whichwefeltworkedwell.

    Formalinterviewsareusedtoauthenticatethethoughtsandviewsportrayedinthedocumentary.

    Inalloftheproductsweanalysed,titleswereonlygiventointervieweeswithaprofessionaloccupa

    tion;weensuredthatwefollowedthisconventioninourdocumentary.Thisisusedto

    reassuretheviewerthattheprofessionalisprovidingvaluableandtrustworthyinformation.

    Asillustratedabove,theintervieweeistypicallyshowninamediumcloseupshotandplaced

    towardsanoncentralthirdofthescreen,atadeskoraprofessionalsetting.Theydonotlookinto

    thecameralens,sothatitappearsthattheyarespeakingdirectlytotheinterviewer.Thereisalso

    oftennotalargeamountofheadroomabovetheinterviewee.Thisconventionalsetupforinter

    viewsbecameapparentwhenwatchingBBCHorizonsIs AlcoholWorseThanEcstasy? aswellas

    inSpurlocksSuperSizeMe.Wechosetofollowthisconventionbecausewefeltitworkedwell

    anddidnotneedtobechallenged.Also,ourteenageaudiencewouldrecognisetheintervieweesas

    professionalstraightaway.Weusedatripodtoensurethecameraremainedstillanddidntshake

    whichisalsoaconventionalwayofensuringprofessionalism.

    Ourvoxpopinterviewswerealsotypicalofthoseinotherdocumentaries.Thesetupoftheinterviewislessimportant

    forinformalspeakersbecauseportrayalofprofessionalstatus

    isnotrequired. ThisisillustratedinSuperSizeMewherethe

    voxpopsarenotusuallyfilmedusingatripodandincludeedits

    suchaszooms.Therearelessexpectationsaroundthe

    compositionaVoxpopinterviewshouldfollow:Wechoseto

    setthemupinwhicheverwaywethoughtlookedbestatthe

    timeoffilming.

    to

    give

    arealisticrepresentationofthelifeandthoughtsofstudentsas

    wellastomakeourtargetaudiencefeelcomfortable.Inplaces

    whereweusedanumberofvoxpopsoneaftertheother,we

    ensuredthatweusedveryquickeditingandcleancutstokeepourviewersteenagersandyoung

    Weusedanoffscreennarrator,asthisisawidely

    usedconventionindocumentaries.Wechosethisas

    opposedtoproducingadocumentaryinparticipatory

    modebecausewewouldratherbeshowingtopic

    relevantfootageinsteadofshotsofthenarrator

    speaking.We

    tried

    to

    ensure

    that

    we

    illustrated

    the

    wordsofthenarratorusingbackgroundfootage.

    However,therewerelimitationsonthetypeof

    backgroundfootagewecoulduse;itwasnotpossible

    toincludeoriginalfootageofteensbingedrinkingbecauseofobvioushealthandsafetyrules.

    Instead,wheneverthenarratorwasspeakingaboutstudents,weusedbackgroundfootageof

    studentsinourcollege.Thisalsohelpedthedocumentarytorelatetoourtargetaudienceofpeople

    aged1323,soIfeelthatthisworkedwellasanalternativetoperhapsmoretopicrelevant

    backgroundfootage.

    out

    or

    facts

    on

    the

    screen.

    This

    provides

    avisualelementthatviewerscanreadinsteadoflistento,againkeepingouraudienceengaged.

    Onreviewing

    some

    existing

    documentaries

    now

    weve

    finished

    the

    editing,

    we

    realised

    that

    most

    of

    thetimethevoiceoverreadsoutthestatisticaswellasitbeingtypedoutonthescreen.Thisisa

    conventionthatwedidnotfollow,aswethoughtreaderswouldbemoreengagedifwejusthad

    thewordsonthescreen.However,bygatheringaudiencefeedbackandwatchingourfinal

    product,wehavedecidedthatitwouldhavebeenbetterifthenarratorhadreadoutthewords.Anotherwidelyusedconventionthatwechosetofollowis

    cutawayshotsduringformalinterviews.Wechosetouse

    thesetokeepouraudienceengaged:wewantedthe

    interviewswithexpertstobevisuallystimulating.Oftenin

    documentaries,directorsuserelevantbackgroundfootageor

    animationsto

    illustrate

    what

    the

    professional

    is

    speaking

    about.WefoundananimationshowingtheliveronYouTube

    andusedthecameratofilmthefootage,asthisisrelevantto

    ourtopicofbingedrinking.

    Ifeltthatthiselementworkedwellbecausetheinterviewee

    wasdiscussingtheeffectsontheliverfromregularbinge

    drinking,sotheanimationwasrelevant.Itwasalsosuitable

    forourtargetaudiencebecauseinteractivefeatureswill

    attracttheattentionofteenageviewers,soIampleasedthat

    OurchosenmagazineistheRadioTimes.Asthereisnotalistingsmagazineaimedprimarilyat

    1323yearolds,wechoseonethatregularlyfeatureschannel4programmes.

    Wechosetousealargeimageasthebackgroundforourdoublepagespread.Oftenthephoto

    graphisofoneoftheactorsstarringintheprogramme,butasitdoesnothaveactorswehadto

    thinkof

    something

    different.

    examples

    that

    followed

    this

    style

    we

    real

    isedthatinmostcasesthelargestimagewasnotascreenshottakenfromthedocumentary.We

    decidedtoconformtothis,soIusedmycameratotakeaphotographofasmashedbottle.

    ArticlesinTVMagazinescontainthe

    essentials:title,standfirst,and

    informationaboutwhentheprogrammeis

    goingtobeaired.Weensuredthatwe

    includedallofthesethings,andmadesurethatthey

    stoodoutfromtherestofthearticlebyputtingthemin

    boldfontoradifferentsizeorcolour.

    Screenshotsfromthedocumentary,with

    captions,areoftenusedtoencouragepotential

    viewerstotuneintotheprogramme.Inour

    article,weincludedscreenshotsofavoxpop,anda

    studentwearingeyedistortiongoggles,toattractour

    targetaudienceastheycouldseethatpeopleindocu

    mentarywerethesameageasthem.Thearticlealso

    Thevastmajorityoftheradiotrailersthatweanalysedincludedaudioclipsfromthedocumentary

    itself.WelistenedtosomeprofessionalradiotrailersaswellaspastA2Advancedportfoliotrailers.

    Wechoseappropriateclipsfromthevoxpops,expertinterviewsandvoiceoverfromthedocumen

    tarytofollowthisconvention,aswefeltthatusingavarietyofvoiceswouldengagelisteners.When

    recordingextravoiceoverclipstoincludethetimeandchannelourdocumentarywouldbeairedon,

    weensured

    that

    the

    voiceover

    was

    clear

    and

    the

    sound

    levels

    were

    acceptable

    by

    monitoring

    using

    theheadphones.

    WechoseCapitalFMasourradiostationbecausewefoundout

    thatadvertisementsforprogrammesonchannel4havebeen

    airedonthisstationbefore.Whenmakingourdecision,we

    firsteliminatedalloftheradiostationswecouldnotuse.

    TheseincludedalloftheBritishBroadcastingCorporation

    (BBC)radiostations,asnoadvertisingorsponsorshipdeals

    areformed;thisisduetothebroadcasterbeingfundedby

    annualdomestictelevisionlicensefees.

    feelthatwehavechosentheappropriatechannel,magazineand

    productswouldbeaimedatinourformalproposal,aswedidnot

    feelthatsocialclasswouldinfluencewhetherteensparticipatedinbinge

    drinking.

    WhathaveyoulearntfromyourAudienceFeedback?

    Togathersomeaudiencefeedback,weproducedthreesimple

    questionnairesandaskedpeoplewithinourtargetaudiencetocomplete

    them.Thisenabledustogatherreliablefeedbackthatwasrepresentative

    oftheaudienceourproductswereaimedat.Blankcopiesofthe

    withinourtargetaudience,tofilltheminashonestlyaspossible.

    Perhapsthemostimportantqualitytheproductsmustholdisbeing

    appropriatefortheirtargetaudience,soweaskedthequestionIsthe

    productappropriateforitstargetaudienceof1323?forall3texts.

    Weaimedtoensuresuitabilityinanumberofdifferentwaysandit

    appearsweweresuccessful:

    TheanswerofNoforthearticlewassupportedwithacommentthatthearticlewasslightlytoo

    textheavy.Weallagreedwiththiscommentandthatourarticlemaynotbecompletelysuitable,

    particularlyfortheyoungerendofourtargetaudience.However,commentsmadebyother

    respondentsincludedthatthelargeamountoftextiscompensatedforbythefourimages,large

    titles,colourfulpullquotesandlightheartedchattystyleofwriting.

    Itappearsthatmostoftherespondentsthoughtthatourdocumentaryandradiotrailerwere,

    however,verysuitableforourtargetaudience.Theupbeatmusicwasthefeaturethatwasmost

    commentedon

    when

    receiving

    verbal

    feedback

    for

    this

    question.

    Tomakeourdocumentaryevenmoresuitable,wecoulduselesstextonthescreenandhavethe

    narratorreadoutthestatistics,asIstatedonthethirdpageofthisevaluation.

    Miseenscene.ThesettingontheinterviewwithVictoriacouldhavebeenimprovedgreatly,asthe

    backgroundwastoobusyandthesetupwasnotveryprofessional.Themajorityofour

    respondentsfromourquestionnaireansweredthattheythoughttheMiseensceneintheformal

    interviewswereappropriate,butVerbalfeedbackinformedusthattheyweremostlyreferringto

    theinterviewswiththeStudentDevelopmentOfficerandtheBiologist.Thisenabledustoconclude

    thatifweweretoproduceasimilarproductagain,wemustputmoreplanningintotheformal

    interviewstoensuretheylookasprofessionalaspossible.

    Wearepleasedthatthiswasacommonviewtakenbyourrespondents.Thismeansthatwehave

    succeededinproducingaradiotrailerthatsuccessfullypromotesthedocumentary.

    Thevoiceoverintheradiotrailerisclear,butcouldbemoreenthusiastic Thisissomethingwewouldimproveifwehadachancetoproduceitagain,asthisisthereason

    that4(20%)ofpeoplesaidourradiotrailerwasonlysomewhatsuitableforourtargetaudience.

    TherewerenoobviousmistakesinthedocumentaryscameraworkoreditingWhilstsomeofouraudiencedidntnotice,somedidpointoutthatthemicrophonewasvisiblein

    thecorneronsomepartsoftheinterviewwithJulieMaitland.Wewereawareofthismistakebut

    decidednottocropitoutbecausewhenviewedonatelevisionthemistakeisbarelyvisible,andwe

    didnotwanttofilmtheinterviewagainastheoneincludedinourdocumentarywasalreadyour

    secondattempt,sowewerelimitedbytheamountoftimewehadleftforfilming.

    SomeofthestatisticswerenotonthescreenforlongenoughWehadnotnoticedthatthiswasproblematic,buttheabovecomment

    wasmentionedby3ofourrespondents.However,theamountoftime

    wehadtoputthestatisticsup,waslimitedbythelengthoftheclipitself,

    soitwasdifficulttoimproveonthisarea.

    has

    enabled

    us

    to

    learn

    whereourstrengthsandweaknesseslay.Overall,Ifeelthatourfeedbackreflectsouropinion

    thatwehavecreatedasuccessfulportfolio,thatissuitableforourtargetaudienceinthatit

    attractstheirattentionandkeepsthemengaged.

    ofmediatechnologiesincludingcomputersoftware,websites,

    andhardware.

    inaudienceresearch.YouTube,aswellasondemandservicesbothonthe

    internetandonourtelevisions,enabledustowatchexistingproductsalso

    aimedatyoungpeopletodiscovertheircodesandconventions.

    UseoftheBlogger.comwebsitewashelpfulinthatourgroupcouldshareallofourresearchand

    findingswitheachother.Allofourmindmaps,decision

    making,documentaryanalysis,planning,andresearchis

    postedontheblog.Theblogalsohelpedustokeeptrack

    onwhatdecisionswehadmadeandhowfareachofus

    hadgotwithourindividualresearch.

    Irecordedtheaudienceresearchthatispresentedinvideoformonourblogusing

    myownhandheldFujifilmS1800camera.Itworkedwellasaquicker

    alternativetosettingupthecamcorderandtripod.

    Thisdevicewasalsousedtotakethephotographofthesmashed

    glassforthefocalbackgroundimageonourlistingsarticle,for

    whichIfeelitworkedwelltoproduceanimageofacceptablequality.

    Tocarryoutfilming,weusedaCanonHDHG20camcorder

    alongwith

    adirectional

    external

    microphone,

    Sennheisser

    headphones,andatripod.Thiscombinationofequip

    mentwassuccessfulbecausethelevelsofback

    groundnoisewerenottoohigh(asthey

    wouldhavebeenifwewouldhaveused

    thebuiltinmicrophoneonthecamera).

    Weconsistentlymonitoredthesoundlevels

    throughtheheadphonessowecouldmakesuretheywereacceptable.Thetripod

    enabledustoensuretheangleofthecamerawasrightbyusingthespiritlevel,sowedidntget

    anyunwanted

    canted

    angle

    footage.

    The

    gathered

    was

    of

    high

    quality

    and

    we

    were

    extremelypleasedwiththeoutcomeproducedfromtheequipmentthatweused.

    AllofoureditingwascarriedoutusinganAppleMaccomputer.Althoughwehada

    fewproblemsbecomingfamiliarwithhowtousethemachines,havingnotused

    thembefore,Idofeelthattheyprovidedopportunitiesthatperhapswouldnot

    ustoproduceadocumentarydisplayingmanycodesandconventions,someof
