CONFESSION AND PARDON Loving God, Lord of life: when we stand at the edge of eternity and bid farewell to a loved one, we are especially aware of the many ways we have fallen short. Death reminds us that we have taken the gift of life for granted, both the lives of our loved ones, and our own lives. We have presumed to claim life as our own, only to misuse it in many ways. Lord, forgive us. The life you have given us we now give back to you. Take us, and use us to your glory. For we pray in the name of our risen Savior. Amen.

MEDITATION

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures;

1. Come, thou Fount of every blessing; tune my heart to sing thy grace; Streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above; Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it, mount of God’s unchanging love!

2. Here I raise my Ebenezer; hither by thy help I’m come; And I hope, by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home. Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God; He, to rescue me from danger, interposed his precious blood.

3. O to grace how great a debtor daily I’m constrained to be! Let that grace now, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee. Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love; Here’s my heart; O take and seal it; seal it for thy courts above.

1. Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father; There is no shadow of turning with thee. Thou changest not; thy compassions they fail not. As thou hast been thou forever wilt be.

Refrain: Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness! Morning by morning, new mercies I see. All I have needed thy hand hath provided. Great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me!

2. Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest, Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above Join with all nature in manifold witness To thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love. (Refrain)

3. Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth, Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide, Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow: Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside! (Refrain)

He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

PASTORAL PRAYER AND THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

BENEDICTION

POSTLUDE *Please stand.

Clergy: Musicians: Rev. Alexandra Pappas Dr. Hollice Watson, organ/piano Rev. Dr. Calvin Reynolds Sarah Saturnino, mezzo-soprano Rev. James Giddens Dylan Davis, tenor Zachary Frank, baritone

Please refrain from singing the hymns, but follow in silent meditation as the Sanctuary Trio sings them.

You are invited to join the family for a reception following the service in the dining room.

1. God of grace and God of glory, on thy people pour thy power; Crown thine ancient church’s story; bring its bud to glorious flower. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the facing of this hour, For the facing of this hour.

2. Lo! the hosts of evil round us scorn thy Christ, assail his ways! From the fears that long have bound us free our hearts to faith and praise. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the living of these days, For the living of these days.

3. Cure thy children’s warring madness; bend our pride to thy control; Shame our wanton, selfish gladness, rich in things and poor in soul. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, lest we miss thy kingdom’s goal, Lest we miss thy kingdom’s goal.

4. Save us from weak resignation to the evils we deplore. Let the gift of thy salvation be our glory evermore. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, serving thee whom we adore, Serving thee whom we adore.
