    What is a Safety Management

System? An SMS is a comprehensive and integrated system that

ensures that all work at the facility is conducted safely

It should be fully documented, accessible and

comprehensible to those that need to use it

It recognises the potential for errors and establishes robust

defences (control measures) which are fully implemented,

to ensure that errors do not result in accidents or near

    misses

It is comprises a set of work practices and procedures for

monitoring and improving the safety and health of all

    aspects of the operation

    Personal Productive Equipment.

    Definition:

Devices used to protect an employeesfrom injury or illness resulting from contact withchemical , radiological, physical, electrical, mechanical,or other workplace hazards.

Caveats... The use of PPE signals that the hazard still exists in the

workplace Unprotected individuals in the same area will be

    exposed

Failure of PPE means that the worker will be exposed

    Effectiveness Review

What can cause harm? What are you doing about it?Is it enough?

What has to be done? What resources do you need? When does the operation need reviewed?

Has the operation progressed as planned?Detail the changes needed?List the improvement actions?

    Control

Avoid working at heights, whenever possible.

    Access Equipment

Using the appropriate type of access equipment andcontrols means

Access equipment (e.g. MEWPs, ladders) and

anything attached to it and used in lifting is to be ofadequate strength and stability for each load, and

is to be designed and erected in a way thatprevents the user from being crushed, trapped, struck or falling from the carrier

    Near High Voltage Power Lines.

Electricity travels at the speed of light (186,000 miles persecond) and is three to four times hotter than aburning building. (6,000 to 8,000 degrees).Electric arc

temperatures can melt steel. When a short circuitoccurs or current flow is interrupted, an arc is oftencreated. If the current, involved is great enough, thesearcs can cause injury or can start a fire.

    Electrical injuries

Electrical injuries consist of four main types:

    Electrocution (fatal)

    Electric ShockElectrical Burns

Falls caused as a result of contact with electrical energy.

Electrical injuries may occur in various ways:

    Direct contact with electrical energy

Injuries that occur when electricity arcs to a victim.

Flash burns generated by an electrical arc.

Flame burns from the ignition of clothing or other

    combustible material
