PRESIDENTS REPORT

To all our members and their fami-lies I hope 2010 has been a success-ful and fruitful year and that 2011 will be even better.

Well Rascal’s 40th Anniversary Cele-bration was a wonderful success. About forty people attended and ranged from our founding members to our most recent new member. The event received local newspaper coverage and will help to cement our standing as part of the local com-munity.

Special thanks go to those who or-ganized the event: Lynne Bentley (Chair), Linda Swift (catering), Judy Roberts and Julie Pettit (Club time

line), Wendy Zarb (accommodation and MC) and Marg Sharp (commercial sponsors). Thanks also to all the members who at-tended. I hope you all had a great time.

Special thanks are also extended to our guest speakers, Tony Booth, Pat Schmidt and Greg Fraser, all past presidents. They each pro-vided a valuable perspective of the early days of Rascal and how the funds to build the Lodge were ca-joled out of the health professionals inhabiting Canberra hospital in the early 1970s.

And also to the great trio of musi-cians who seemingly effortlessly en-tertained our guests that afternoon. Thanks to Alan Swift, and Moir and Gavin Holmes. Your presence really added to the flavour of the af-ternoon.

Renewals now due

Renewals for the 2011 Club Year are now due and I encourage you to by log onto the Rascal site, renew and to then make use of your mem-bership by booking some accommo-dation for the year ahead.

Significant changes to booking arrangements for 2011

In November each year the Committee reviews the operation of the Club and this year has made a number of significant changes to the By-Laws which affect bookings and refunds. The changes are de-scribed in more detail elsewhere in

this newsletter.

The objective has been to better match demand with cost, to shift usage to low demand periods and to discourage bookings from spreading out to many rooms, each with va-cant beds.

The Committee will monitor the im-pact of these changes over the com-ing year and revisit the arrange-ments in November 2011.

Post Winter Working Bee

The bee was not well attended, but those who did attend achieved a considerable amount. Thank you to those diligent and com-mitted Rascal Members and guests. Given the low turn out to working bees, and the fact that it is the same people who always volunteer, the Committee has agreed to signifi-cantly increase the voucher pay-ment for participation to $80. This will inevitably result in increased ac-commodation charges in the future to compensate for lost income due to voucher use. The best way to minimize this is to contribute to a working bee.

Welcome to our new members: Martin Hine and Shay Hine and Des Falconer .

Best wishes to you and your family for the season’s festivities and for a fruitful year ahead.

Alan Laird

President

Rascal Inc ~ Newsletter December 2010

Renewals are now due for the 2011 Club Year. I encourage you to log onto the Rascal web site and renew your membership.

• The annual subscription for the 2011 Club Year is $110 for full members and $100 for summer members. These represent about a five per cent increase over the 2010 level. The Club Year extends from 1 March to the end of February the following year.

• Renewals made prior to end February 2011 receive complimentary ac-commodation vouchers to the value of $40. These vouchers can be used for casual or (from now) block bookings.

• Summer in the Lodge is cooler now that we have installed a ducted evaporative air cooler in the top level, so why not use your vouchers and go up to Jindabyne for a break.

• Consider making a mid week block booking for the extended family in the upcoming school holidays. It is only $180 per night for the 2010 Club Year and $200 for 2011 – and you can use vouchers.

At its November meeting the Committee regularly reviews and updates our fees and charges, booking rules and any other matters that might improve

Lodge usage and address member need.

A number of significant changes were made this year to booking arrangements. These changes follow from the move about two years ago when the rates were bet-ter matched with demand.

Key changes for 2011

• Annual subscriptions have increased by approximately 5 per cent.

• Block booking charges have increased by approximately 10 per cent.

• The Committee has made a number of important changes to booking fees and arrangements.

These changes have been made to increase the opportunity for other members to use the Lodge and to reduce booking ‘churn’, which tempo-rarily ties up rooms.

♦ Refunds for changes in bookings will be provided in the form of ac-commodation vouchers that expire at the end of the next Club Year. This gives more than a full year in which to use vouchers accruing from accommodation refunds. The Club Year extends from 1 March to the end of February the following year. So if you are edit a booking today (December 2010) and are due a refund then the refund will be in the form of vouchers that expire end February 2012.

♦ Accommodation costs have been restructured to encourage people in the one booking to room-share, rather than ‘spreading out’ across many rooms and precluding other members from using those rooms. Occupied rooms containing vacant beds are expensive, both from loss of potential income to the Club and because members seeking a room cannot book those beds.

◊ A two tiered accommodation fee arrangement comprising a Room Rate component and a Per Person component has been intro-duced:

∗ The Room Rate is charged once for each night the room is occu-pied irrespective of the number of people in that room. The two bed rooms have a cheaper rate than the four bed rooms. The Manager’s room also has a different rate.

∗ The Per Person rate is charged for each person in the booking.

These changes mean it is cheaper for two people to share a single room than for two people to each occupy a room. A party of four in a four bed room pay the same in 2011 as they would in 2010.

If one or two people occupy a four person room because all the two bed rooms are already occupied, then they are charged for a four bed room. One or two people tying up a four bed room prevents a family from booking that room.

◊ The names of people in a booking are now viewable by Members af-ter logging on to the Rascal web site. The intention is that if rooms are scarce then knowing who else is booked in may provide an op-portunity for friends to room-share.

♦ Vouchers can be now used for Block bookings in addition to Casual bookings.

• Accommodation vouchers for attendance at working bees has been in-creased to $80 and expire at the end of the next Club Year. Our obser-vation is that the moral obligation of members to contribute to working bees only works on the same small group of dedicated members. The intention is that these members be appropriately rewarded.

• All weekend rates (Friday and Saturday) have been increased to at least Medium Season. This reflects the view that weekends are more in de-mand than mid week.

• Public Holidays have been increased from Medium to High Season, again reflecting the view that public holiday periods are more in demand than non public holiday periods.

While these changes are wide reaching and will change usage patterns, the intention is to better match demand with cost, shift usage to low demand periods and to compensate the Club and its members if beds are left va-cant in an otherwise occupied room.

The Committee will monitor the impact of these changes over the coming year and revisit the arrangements in November 2011.

I look forward to your continuing membership of Rascal and encourage you to renew for 2011 by logging on to the Rascal site and to then make use of your membership by booking some accommodation for the year ahead.

Cheers…Alan Laird
