MEETINGS count) . . . .

Our special guests were the highlights of theevening. Jerry Titus, Editor of "Sports Car Graphic",and Freddy Van Buren of Mexico City both in Ft Northfor the big Green Valley 300 rushed over after anews conference to join us for dinner and answerour many questions about racing. Jerry Titus alsostated his views on the proposed new Auto SafetyStandards affecting both American and imported cars.

After the meeting quite a number of the group ad-journed to the private club of the Cibola for a lit-tle liquid refreshment and more Porsche socializing.

SAN MARCOS WEEKEND. . . . . Sherry StinsonIt's almost hereill The Stinsons are busy tryingto get the Porsche running and baby packed off tograndmother' s in anticipation of a fun-packedweekend in San Marcos.

Roger Chaney and Doc Whitteberg have made asecond trip down to make final arrangements, runrally routes, etc., and I hear that the country-side is just beautiful now so I for one am lookingforward to getting away from lawn mowing, diaperchanging, etc., and getting to know our PorscheClub members better. We have a lot of new membersand this will be the perfect time to get acquainted.

At last word, we had ten reservations at theAquarena but it's not too late for YOU to come too.We have received a letter from the owner of Schwan-krug's Garden, THE place to go in New Braunfels, saying that by May 6 & 7 his outside beer gardenand dance area would be open for our enjoyment(better brush up on your polka) and we know fromexperience that the place is really jumping onSat. night. We hope to adjourn there after ourdinner at the Wursthaus Edelweiss for more beerand dancing. Plans have also been made for us toeat as a group at Carson's Restaurant in San Marcosafter the rallye on Sunday. We'll just have anorder-off-the-menu type of lunch but we'll allbe seated together and can hear how Jack missedthat sign because Mary was fussing for him to slowdown and how Bill shouldn't have had that Scotchlast night after drinking all of that beer. Suchare the many tales after a weekend like this. Whydon't you join us and be a part of this merriment)

BITS AND PIECES, . . . .Several PCAers made it over to Shreveport to theHoliday-in-Dixie Rallye--DOC OGILVIE and JIM &SHERRY STINSON. The Stinsons had car troubleand had to vamoose before the rally ended and wehaven't heard how Doc Ogilvie came out. We notedthat there were more Porsches there than any othermake. . . . . Our Quarterly Board of DirectorsMeeting was held the 11th of April at the home ofLARRY and PAT VEST. Our thanks go to them forallowing us to converge there. All directorswere present and we got a lot of planning donefor the remainder of the year. Future activitiesinclude scavenger hunts, open and closed gynkhanas, picnics, etc. . . . .It's good to see SANDI MUNCYup and about again after her long stay in thehospital.

911/912 WINDSHIELD WIPERS (Perloined from the "NortheastNews" and "Porsche Patter")Do your 911/912 Windshield Wipers leave all themuddy water right in front of your face? Does themuddy water proceed to dribble up the windshieldafter you have shut the wiper off? Right infront of your face? Right? Well, herets one wayto stop it, and a very easy one. Grab the 14mmwrench out of your tool kit. Loosen the big nutat the base of the right side wiper arm. Youdon't have to take it all the way off, but it isO.K. if you do. Flip the wiper arm away from thewindshield, and wobble the base of it so that itcomes loose from the shaft which comes throughthe cowl. The wiper arm sets on a tapered andserrated spline which allows it to be positionedin any direction on the windshield. Repositionthe arm so that on the stroke across the driversface it deposits the muddy water all the waydown to the bottom of the windshield where theairstream can't get at it and push it up acrossyour line of vision. The water now obligingly

WIPERS count) . . . . .runs down to the bottom of the glass the wayit should, and the wiper parks about an inchhigher than it used to on the right side nomore in the passenger's way than it used to be.

My wipers are now absolutely faultless, anda joy to use in cleaning the salt off thescreen with the washers, where they used tobe a last-ditch remedy because I couldn'tstand the streak in front of my face after I'dused them. Everybody should make this changein my opinion. Itts a big improvement. DickGilcreast

REDLINES & YOUR PORSCHE (Reprinted from "PorscheZeitung", San Joaquin Region)Porsche pushers normally think of "redline" asthe maximum engine speed or crankshaft revolu-tions per minute that the power plant was desig-nated to reach. The factory has made clear, how-ever, that engine speed is critical in a numberof ways. With reference to the tachometer, theobservant driver knows its needle means -manythings. The red portion of the dial is usuallya band covering a spread of RPM's 200 to 500wide. Some tachometers also have a green band. The red band area is of course an indication ofdanger, the danger being that the engine isapproaching or in the area of maximum revolu-tions that it was designed to achieve.

Such design in "redlines" is determined by anumber of factors, no one of which can be con-sidered more important than others. Generallya redline is indicative of the fact that theengine s cam has done its best to produce all ofthe power and torque it could. Turning theengine past the redline would serve only toreduce the amount of power and torque--a realwaste.

Pushing past the redline means excessive wearon an engine also. Factory tolerances andpractical production methods allow balancing ofthe reciprocal parts to a standard somewhat be-low that of racing engines (when compared to

Page 6: 67 No. 5 MAVERICK REGION James Ables, 3817 Bendale Rd., …mav.pca.org/slipstream/ss_may67.pdfsecond trip down to make final arrangements, run rally routes, etc., and I hear that the

REDLINES (CONT)0 .Q . . C .

American engines, these tolerances look great!).Since imbalance squares itself as RPM t s increase, exceeding the redline multiplies vibration (fric-tion) accordingly and subsequently reduces enginelife greatly. Additionally the parts of the engineare not designed to regularly meet the stressesinvolved at these higher RPMts and when stressedunduly, simply break. To give an example, camfollowers in a 1600 normal are the same size of

those in a S90 but are of different materials. The normal followers would soon break if subject-ed to the higher RPM's attainable by the 890.

Crankshafts (a sore point with the author) are (another example. The normal and super cranks

begin to flex (bend) in the engine just past their

redline. This causes both excessive wear of bear-

ings and metal fatigue of the crank itself. Yetanother example are the valves. Wound past the

redline, valves begin to "float," that is, theyjust don't close. Results of float include

possible contact with the piston (reach for yourwallet fellow) or at the very least a marked de-crease in power and efficiency. Anyway you con-

sider exceeding the redline, the same conclusion

must be drawn; loss of power, torque, possibleimmediate damage and a shortened engine life. There is everything to lose and nothing to gain.

The least considered aspect of engine speed isminimum engine speed. Power and torque at lowRPM's requires a large displacement engine or a

lot of cylinders. Porsche has neither. While thefabulous Porsche "boxer" engine produces excellentpower and torque over a wide range of RPM's, itMUST run at higher RPM's than a larger engine toattain them. This means that there is neitherpower or torque at very low RPM s and drivingthe Porsche at slow RPM's DAMAGES THE ENGINE!Slow engine speeds: (1) clog the cylinders andfoul the spark plugs with carbon, (2) cause theengine to run in a "jerky" motion producingundue strain on moving parts and cause excess

(3) forces the engine to work at a totallyinefficient level which defeats the entirepurpose of the engine design. If you don'tlike to run the engine in the green zone(efficient area of power and torque), con-sider yourself a dedicated Porsche destroyer.

Pick up your owner's manual. The factorymakes definite recommendations on how yourPorsche should be driven. After all, theyARE the experts. They build the car forpeople dedicated to the pleasure of finedriving.
