The Memorial Day Weekend Club Racewas a magnificent success! This year’srace went even smoother than last

year’s, and everyone I spoke to attested towhat a great event it was.

This was my first time to drive Texas MotorSpeedway in a DE. I cannot begin to describewhat a thrill it was! Three days of track time

meant that I could learn at my own pace (slow) and graduallybuild up speed over the weekend. The Porsche Store, our premiersponsor, as well as the many other sponsors (see page 17 for list)gave us excellent support in every facet of the event.

But the real story of the event was the people – not just theorganizers, but the dozens of volunteers that stepped forwardand helped us out. We were overjoyed to see how many peoplepitched in, and truly appreciated all their effort. This con-tributed greatly to the overall success of the event.

Which brings me to the next topic – Parade 2004. SinceMaverick Region is hosting Parade in 2004, we are going toneed even more volunteers than we had for the TMS ClubRace! It will be a monumental effort that we have alreadystarted organizing. It will take us the full two years to get readyfor it, so please start thinking about ways you might like tohelp. We will be making more specific requests as we figureout exactly how things will work, and will inform you of ourprogress every step of the way.

Prez Saysby James Shoffit, Maverick Region President

In the mean time, come on out to an event! We have anautocross, a time trial, a happy hour at Mondo’s in Addison, and three Porsche lunches in July. In addition to our Porschelunches in Addison on the July 30th and in Plano on July 16th,we will also continue our new habit of having a lunch inBedford on July 16th. It will again be at the Good Eats on theSoutheast corner of Bedford Road and 183, starting at 11:30 orso. Please RSVP to me at [email protected] if you plan toattend the Bedford lunch. We had two new members (Brantand Byron Fry) as well as Mark Gluck and Steve Kent show upfor the last one. We had a great time, but had plenty of roomfor others!

So, come on out, and join the fun!

Because I Said Soby Wendy Shoffit, Editor

I’m speechless...Well, okay...maybe not com-pletely speechless (as hell has yet to freezeover)! I have so many wonderful articles

sitting on my desk that I cannot possibly fitthem all in to this month’s issue. I am so gratefulto have all of you thinking about writing articles(and doing so) without any prompting fromme. I wish I could double this issue to include

everything, but unfortunately that’s not in the budget. So, ifyou’ve written something for me and don’t see it in this issue, don’t despair. I solemnly promise to get them in within the nextfew months! As for the rest of you budding columnists, don’t letthis discourage you from putting your thoughts down on paper. The fall and winter months sometimes get a bit on the lean sideand I don’t want to longingly remember the “good ole days.” Keepthem coming and thanks so much!

Now for some exciting news...we’ve been talking about it allyear and it’s finally here. Late this month we will be leaving for thePorsche Parade in Boise. There are nearly 30 Maverick Regionmembers attending, most of whom will be driving. As always,Parade promises to be a spectacular event. While in Boise, we willbe officially presenting our Parade 2004 bid and proposal. We’vealready had several meetings regarding the ‘04 event and thingsare humming right along. If you want to get involved, contact meand I’ll help you get to the right person. In the meantime, forthose of us trekking to Boise, Taxi Breithaupt has come up with asuggestion on how we can do our very own salute to Idaho. She

Maverick Minutesby Andy Mears, Secretary

The meeting was called to order just after7:00 PM.

First piece of business a motion waspassed to purchase more inventory for theGoodie Store. Sales have been good and needto replace what’s been sold. Next, DennisChamberlin discussed the rotation of Happy

Hour location as well as other factors influencing Happy Hour.He also shared some membership demographics based onwhere everyone lives.

Joe McGlohen put forth a recommendation for theMaverick Region to purchase additional radios as well as compatible headsets. A motion was passed to purchase 5 radiosand 10 headsets.

After much discussion, a motion was passed to extend useof the Internet PayPal to other venues. The goal is to offer theservice to anyone that wishes to pay for events using PayPal andthe club would only charge additional fees to cover the cost ofthe service. As always, members may continue to pay for eventsby cash or check.

Jimmy Carter and Eric Erz reported on their multi-region concours meeting in Austin and plans are in the works for a Zone 5 Concours to be held October 19 in Austin and sponsored by Hill Country Region.

Teri Davis updated us on the plans for the Maverick Regionsummer retreat. The location will be “The Cliffs” on PossumKingdom Lake the weekend of August 23,24,25. For informationor room reservations contact Teri.

Meeting closed at 8:40 PM. Remember to check theMaverick website for the most current news and event schedules.

Dear Jan [Mayo],

I would like to thank you for the regular forwarding

of “Slipstream.” I still have my 1988 911, but unfortu-

nately it is not with me here in Greece. I do however have

the opportunity to derive my joy from it on my periodic

visits to Dallas, which keep me in touch with “home.”

Best regards,

Peter A. Alivizatos, M.D. (Athens, Greece)

Happy Hour At CiudadBy Stacy Waters

For me, one of the highlights ofthis month’s Happy Hourcame in the form of a single

statement made by Mark Gluck.Carrying on small talk as one doesat the beginning of Happy Hour, Iasked Mark why Ciudad was selectedfor this month’s event. Mark saidthe idea was to create a giant smiley

face pattern across the DFW Metroplex. Okay – good enough. Ilike a person with a different sense of humor and therefore Markand I get along pretty well.

This initial exchange set the tone for the evening. I metmore unique personalities on this one outing than in all of myHappy Hours combined – and it proved to be one of the mostexciting events I have attended. The crowd (about 30 large) wasa great mix of all types and the bar staff was almost too generouswith their pour. Do you think that might have had a little some-thing to do with the fun factor?

The Mexico City-style cuisine was sophisticated and deliciouswith a variety of dishes that seemed to please most.

Being a “newbie” to the club, I feel more and more welcomewith each event. My husband insisted that I attend the firstHappy Hour with him a few months ago. I really dreaded it. Imean, how in the world could I spend a night talking aboutPorsches? I just learned how to properly pronounce the vehicle’sname for goodness sake! But the most pleasant thing happenedon the first Happy Hour night. I made several new friends andthere was no pressure to name every Porsche model. Moreimportantly, I was spending time with genuinely friendly peoplewith a variety of interesting stories and Porsche advice. Fromthen on, I have not missed a Happy Hour. If you haven’t been toone, I encourage you to do so. It’s quite simply one of the bestways to become familiar and comfortable with MRPCA. You can

. . . learned how to properly pronouncethe vehicle’s name . . .

Happy Hour Crew: Dennis Chamberlain,Dee Lersch, and Mark Gluck

really learn so much from other members about the different

events such as Autocross, Club Races, Driver Education, Time

Trials, and Tours.

The July Happy Hour will be at Mondo’s, one block north of

the Galleria. I plan to be there for sure. By the way, that is the

left eye of the smiley face!

Pecan Pie, Danny, Big Bucks & Roads of East TexasBy Bob Bianconi

Once again Tourmeister Ted Glover and wife Bonnie haveserved the region well. Ted and Bonnie hosted a two-daytour through the back roads of East Texas with a short

excursion into Louisiana. The tour started bright and earlySaturday morning, May 18th. This is our third tour withMaverick and we were looking forward to seeing parts of Texaswe would most likely never have found on our own. We were notto be disappointed.

Twelve cars showed up for the tour. Leading the pack was Tedin his turbo carrera followed by a pair of 944’s driven by DougMacall and Jay Easley. There was a 928 piloted by Jim Mayzurk. The 928, I believe, was voted the best sounding car on the tour –nothing like the low growl of a V-8. There were three 911’s(excluding Ted’s): Arnold and Jessie Stout, Andy Miller, and ChrisSmith and her son Craig. Andy was driving a brand new C4 Cab;not to be out done, Leon Frenkel was also driving his new car – aspanking new 911 turbo. Rounding out the pack were three of thebest Porsches (ok, I’m severely biased, so shoot me); a silver “S”driven by Jim and Margie Chadwick, a pastel yellow Boxster driven by Brian “I have the cleanest car” Guitard and wife Terrie;and my own Boxster. Caboose on the Porsche train wasWebmaster, Mike Oakes, in his BMW M3 roadster.

Spectacular roads and scenery were complimented by spectacular weather. It was 72 degrees and sunny. We headed east

promptly at 8 AM and we were treated to lush green fields, talltrees and hardly a car in sight except for the line of Porschesstretching out in front. How does Ted find these roads, we keptasking ourselves. All too quick it was lunch time and we werepulling into Nacogdoches and the Clear Springs Restaurant. Atlunch, it some how slipped that Jo-Ann and I have been in Texasalmost 3 years and I haven’t yet had chicken-fried steak or PecanPie. This nasty slip would later come back to haunt me.

Following a group photo at the train station, we were back inour cars heading towards Louisiana. Jo-Ann wanted to know ifwe were heading towards a Shreveport casino to which we all kepttelling her no! So from that point on, every stop had to include agas station with a Lotto machine for her chance at the big bucks.

Into Louisiana we went, stopping for gas way out in theboonies. While we were stopped, Brian in the yellow Boxsterwhips out the windex and proceeds to wipe down his car (well,ok, just the front). I guess he wants to keep it REALLY clean;hmmmm, maybe a future concours chairman?

As we were taking our break, a young Louisianan stopped byin his pickup truck and was admiring our cars. He said that hehad a bunch of Porsches at home. We all thought, yeah right;remember this was way, way out in the middle of nowhere. Wellno sooner did the young fellow, Danny, leave, when he returnsdriving an arctic silver 996. Needless to say, we all had a goodlaugh. Never know where you’re gonna find them thar porches.

Next up was Natchitoches, La. a quaint little town along theCane River. Talk about picturesque. If you haven’t been there, putit on your “to do” list. Lots of shops and restaurants and a niceriverfront. And as they say, getting there is half the fun…

By late afternoon the crowd was getting hungry so it was off to the Mariner’s restaurant just outside Natchitoches (pronounced nak-a-tish). It was right on the water and seemedlike the perfect end to a great day of driving with new friends. WeWhat a motley crew.

were all full after our meal (at least I was) when a mysteriouspiece of pecan pie showed up in front of me. Well, I have to saythat, yes indeed, it was good. Thanks to all at the ‘other table’ whomade sure I tried something new. I was worried the rest of theweekend that a chicken fried steak might show up; but luckilywe’ll put that one off until the fall tour… It was an hour’s driveback to the Texas side and Nacogdoches and we were all prettymuch beat from the day’s drive.

Sunday we were back on the road for more scenic roads, twisties and rolling hills. We drove though parts of DaveyCrockett National Forrest and then finished out the tour withlunch in Palestine. From there it was back through Athens andhome. All in all, it was a great weekend. Thanks, Ted and Bonnie.

IN MEMORY OF

Hollis “Whit” WhittenbergJuly 7, 1918 - June 1, 2002

God saw you getting tiredAnd a cure was not to be.

So he put his arms around youAnd whispered, “come to me.”

With tearful eyes we watched you,And saw you pass away.

And though we loved you dearly,We could not make you stay.

A golden heart stopped beating, Hard workinghands were put to rest.

God broke our hearts to prove to usHe only takes the best.

Our prayers go out to theUssery family for strength andcomfort as they mourn the lossof Fran’s father.

What do you get when you mix 60 Club Racers, 60 Drivers’Education participants, 15 concours cars, over 60 volunteers, andgreat sponsors? Just about the best club race EVER!

Maverick Region was the host of the Memorial Weekend 2002Club Race and DE at Texas Motor Speedway (TMS). Hill CountryRegion’s David Gross says about the facility, “I'd never been to TMSand at first sight I was overwhelmed! Hey, I'm used to TWS or MSR- this place was like Enron Field er... I mean Astros Field... crossedwith the Talladega Speedway. Everything was so new and shiny! The bleachers for 250,000 of your closest friends; the SpeedwayClub restaurant with valet parking and a view of the track; the condos and luxury skyboxes; the heliport that will accommodate 50or so helicopters! The magnitude and the opulence of the placewere amazing!”

The gates opened at TMS late Friday afternoon, allowing forearly registration, a chalk talk session, and the orientation meeting.Registration and tech seemed to go smoothly and most peopleseemed to appreciate a good beginning. The drivers who attendedthe chalk talk were treated to an in-car video presentation of thetrack and were happy they were there. All 5 (yes, there were only 5)rookie drivers who were supposed to be there participated in theorientation meeting, so no one needed a hand slapping.

The driving festivities got underway a little late on Saturdaymorning, May 24th. The racers were divided into two groups, the“Smiley Faces” and the “Stars” while the DE’ers were the “Frogs”and the “Chili Peppers.” Who else but the Mavericks would think ofsuch names? The 25 minute sessions were shortened a small amounton Saturday to make up for the lost time in the morning. Therewere bound to be a few small “hiccups,” most of which were invisibleto everyone else. We were relieved!

Even the chicane, which was a sore spot from last year’s race, was improved. As John Crosby writes, “The infamous chicane fromlast year was replaced with three bundles of tires which resembleda big slalom. It was still one car at a time, but the last tire stack wasoffset about 25’, thereby opening up the exit. Pylons were stacked infront and on the sides to make the chicane more visible. It wasaligned so that cars had an escape route on either side if they came in too hot. It allowed entry speeds of about 60 mph with agradually accelerating exit. There was only one minor incidentcaused by the chicane when the tire bundle was side swiped.

Missing the chicane was an automatic black flag and a stop and gopenalty. The drivers tested the limits of the chicane during the firstcouple of practice sessions and there were numerous black flags.During the races however there were only one or two stop and gopenalties. Race starts were done on the infield straight, thus alleviat-ing the congestion into the chicane on the race starts. The flaggingcrews were very accommodating and this worked very well.”

The weather on Saturday and Sunday couldn’t have been better. The DE sessions went very smoothly as well as the Club Race practices, qualifying sessions, and races (fun and sprint). Therewere a few minor driving incidents all weekend, including oneregarding the chicane, but none were very serious. (Of course, thatis from an event organizer’s standpoint…I’m sure the driversweren’t very happy about it!)

On Sunday, not only was there racing to watch, but concourschairman Jimmy Carter held a casual concours event out at thetrack. There were 15+ cars on display. After the sprint race was

finished, 6-8 race cars even joined the show and shine event. Agroup of young boys from one of our sponsors, Enviroshine, worked diligently to make those race cars shine (for that event andall weekend)! It was quite a site to see. Maverick Member, KarenErz, created beautiful plaques for the concours winners.

Sunday evening’s dinner at the track was absolutely delicious, despite warmer than usual temperatures in the infield café. We hadbeen battling the broken air conditioner all weekend and it wasunfortunate the track staff couldn’t get it working for the awards

Worker Choice – Richard Wilkenfeld (Smiley Faces)Glen Gatlin (Stars)

The only bad weather we had was on Monday when rainloomed in the distance and finally fell at lunchtime and continuedinto the afternoon, during the scheduled enduro race. About therace, John Crosby wrote, “The enduro groups were already quitesmall and with a number of drivers indicating that they were notplanning to race in the rain, the enduro groups were combined. Thiswas discussed at the driver’s meeting and there were no objections.Even though these groups had no practice time together and were

racing in the rain on one of the fastest tracks in the country, therewas not even a single close call. Amazing.”

Corner (#7) worker, Darron Shaffer mentioned in an emailthat not only were the Club Racers clean, but also during the DErun session in the rain there were *NO* flags thrown the entire time(except for a few passing flags). Everyone seemed to be behavingthemselves nicely.

Monday finished with a short awards presentation and happyhour. The grins from the racers and DE drivers went from ear toear. Apparently racing in the rain is extremely exciting! Just asksomeone watching the race about the “puddle pass” by Jim Buckley.Better yet, ask Jim about it! I’m sure he’d love to tell you.

William Lloyd (Smiley Faces)

Crosby summed the weekend up: “Another terrific event host-ed by Maverick Region. The track operations, corner workers, andthe region volunteers were all outstanding. The hospitality pre-sented by the region was second to none. Every detail was attend-ed to in advance from the 996 turbo pace car to the pit stop timingcrew. There is nothing negative to report and there is very little thatcould be improved upon.

Noteworthy performances were presented by Event Chair GlenGatlin, Registrar Wendy Shoffit, Hospitality and Sponsorship ChairLanean Hughes, Corner Worker Coordinator Joe McGlohen, andSteward’s Assistant Tom Snodgrass. There were obviously manyothers that also contributed.”

Thanks also go to John Crosby (national club race chairman &race steward), Donna Amico & Dick Dobson (Scrutineers), DeniKnight (timing & scoring), Bryan Henderson (race consultant),Dan Ruehs & Bill Dugan (tech inspection), Bob Benson (grid),

Many thanks go to the Porsche Store for being such a fantasticpremier sponsor. Without their support and the support of the restof our sponsors, we could not have put on the event. We look for-ward to working with you all again next year!

Here are some other comments regarding the weekend:

The club racers were amazing with a GT-3 running around 170MPH and blowing through the chicane at around 70 MPH! It wasa beautiful site. Porsches everywhere, it was easy to get bitten, Ihope to club race in the future. You just can't go out and not wantto participate. All the volunteers did a superb job, no complaintsabout anything. – Doug Molny (DE #179)

I just wanted to drop you a quick note and say thanks foreverything this weekend. You guys did a great job. From the gridworkers to the corner workers to the hospitality and award cere-mony, it was first rate! I was proud to be a sponsor but even moreproud to be a racer from the Maverick Region! - Kevin Procaccino(Club Racer #419)

MANY THANKS! It was another outstanding event! Evenrunning in the rain on my very used & abused Kumhos was fun.(I was surprised how well they actually stuck) You guys did a greatjob! - Jay Walker (DE #525)

I also would like to reiterate the many thanks to all the spon-sors, organizers, volunteers and corner workers. TMS is a greatfacility and I had a blast. The corner workers did an awesome jobout there in that heat & humidity (few corner stations were withoutshade). - Noby Takahashi (DE #257)

It was one the best of the year for me... you guys are great! -John Crosby

Congrats to all of you for a great event -- the support and thehospitality are unmatched anywhere. - Donna Amico, Chief RaceScrutineer

I had a great time at Maverick's club race. It was an experienceI waited ALL my whole life for and will never forget. The peoplewere really wonderful and helpful. - Frank Hinds (Club Racer #264)

The Maverick folks were out in great numbers and were so wellorganized that the event went without disruption and I honestlydon't know how a volunteer organization can do so much with somany so well but it made for a wonderful experience in which I amdelighted to have been included. I am looking forward to the nextone. - Scott Orr (Club Racer #61)

May Tech Session at Park PlaceBy Doug Molny

The service and parts department at Park Place Porschemade this event very special. We arrived around 8:30AM Saturday May 11th to donuts, orange juice, and

coffee. Once the parts department opened they handed outGT-2 T-Shirts, Porsche hats and key chains, This was an unex-pected treat.

About 7 Maverick members show up and we immediatelyproceeded to install 2 Corbeau racing seats in my 1979 911SC.We determined that new holes had to be drilled into the seatmounts to accommodate larger bolts to hold down the seatbrackets. This worked just fine thanks to Jimmy Hayes’ sugges-tions. Upon completion I placed my helmet on my head andsat down only to find my head sticking out of the sunroof! Itwas obvious that the seat pads were too thick and had to be cutdown. We decided to wait to do that on the following Monday.

We then moved on to installing the Pagid Orange brakepads which only took a few minutes. There were several of uswho have never done this before and wanted to learn how. Wewere amazed how easy it is.

We then moved into another building for the HunterAlignment Machine which is had digital cameras and targetsfor precise alignment. This is a computerized piece of equip-ment that measures the cross camber, caster and toe-in for thefront and rear suspension, it produces measurements in a digital format down to minutes which 1 degree would equal 60

minutes. My front and rear end are displayed in the picturesshown in this article. We learned that in just 6-months my alignment had changed significantly enough that theseadjustments will be crucial to the cars ability to handle andcorner correctly.

Also available were corner weight scales which are placedunder each wheel to check the load each wheel carries. Theresult is the ability to adjust the weight each wheel carries tothe ground which effects the car diagonally as one wheel maybe lighter and would effect the corner entry, exit and braking. This adjustment is available to everyone and I would suggestthis at least twice a year. Thanks again to Park Place Porschefor hosting this tech session we look forward to the next one.

. . . only to find my head sticking outof the sunroof . .

Quite a few Mavericks (and non-Mavs) wandered out toMineral Wells again for the second Time Trial/Autocrossweekend of the season. There was a very large turnout on

Saturday for the Time Trial on Course #2. Because SCCA had theirRegional AX at TMS on Sunday, we only had 2 non-Porsches for awell-designed course by Kevin Hardison.

Saturday morning started off with a slight mist/drizzle. Atleast it wasn’t a hailstorm like we encountered at the last event! Ihad a chance to check out some of the ‘changes’ to Corner 2 whiletaking out a Honda S2000 driver to show him the course. Few smallpotholes and loads of gravel required some adjustments to the line.

Not sure what happened, but I managed to drop over 6 seconds from last year and almost beat ‘Too Damn Fast’ ChuckMachala. Chuck showed up with his brand new Kumho Victoracersand I tried to give him some ‘friendly’ advice on tire pressure(“Chuck, I think you want to start them at 38F/40R cold!”). Forsome reason, he didn’t heed my words of wisdom. At least I didn’tlet some guy in a black SC beat me!

A few of us stayed around to help Cody and Kevin set up theautocross course. At first, we were a bit mystified in the back of thetruck with the course; we all thought that Kevin had finally lost it!After driving the course a few times on Saturday night, I knew thatit was going to be a blast on Sunday! But even before we got startedon Sunday morning, there were a few problems. A huge stormrolled through on Saturday night, knocking over the Porta-Potties(Fran the Windex Lady, thank you for cleaning them), the timingtrailer off its jacks, and most of the cones on the course. Yikes! Justminor obstacles, we managed to start the event with minimal delay.

I think everyone enjoyed Kevin’s course, there was lots ofpositive feedback. I even beat the Cockroach (granted it wasn’t Ed’stimes). That guy in the black SC (with cheater tires?) sent me off tothe cleaners on this day. Wendy had some awesome times over theweekend and her screams of joy could be heard over in Cool.

Thank you James, Wendy, Cody, Kevin, Mr. Nancy Dugan, Edand all the others that helped make this another awesome weekendout in Mineral Wells.

With everything else that is going on, the next event won’t beuntil end of June. Be warned, I’m scheduled to design the autocrosscourse. I’ll be trying to come up with some remote-controlledcones to fly out in front of ‘Too Damn Fast’ Chuck (or I’ll pay offthe corner workers to pull the fishing line taped to the cones….).

...thought that Kevin had finally lost it...

Prior to May 16th, my experience of Mayo Performance hadbeen to pull up outside to drop off or pick up Cody when our914 has been in for repairs or improvements. After a recent

repair stint lasting several weeks, I figured it was about time Ichecked out our 914’s home away from home. The annual May atMayo’s dinner seemed the perfect opportunity.

The Saturday of May at Mayo’s coincided with the HillCountry Region Drivers’ Education event at Motorsport Ranch.Although many Maverick Region members spent the day negoti-ating Rattlesnake and the off-camber turn at Ricochet (See honey,I do listen when you dissect the course!), we had a great turnoutfor dinner. As guests arrived, the lot in front of Mayo’s was filledwith beautiful Porsches – the spectrum ranged from the Shoffits’911 (fresh from a day o’ spinning at MSR) to Rich Johnson’s pris-tine yellow 914.

Cody and I were a little late arriving, but in plenty of time toget two helpings of BBQ from Main Street BBQ and our choicefrom the array of ice cold beverages. After dinner, Teri Davis pre-sented a slide show explaining the effort and fun that will beinvolved in hosting Parade in 2004 – watch Slipstream to see how

you can get involved. As we digested (BBQ and Parade info), weheaded outdoors to get a last look at all the assembled cars. Prettysoon, the rumble of Richard Fisher’s Chevy V8 engine (in a 914 noless!) drew a crowd in the driveway. But before long, the mosqui-toes and Cody’s weariness from a day of driving won out, and wecalled it a night.

Many thanks to the following for a great evening: Ed Mayofor all his hard work in getting the shop ready for visitors, UsseryPrinting for co-sponsoring the event (supplying all the table dec-orations and sidewalk chalk for the kids), and Eric Erz for puttingit all together. If you haven’t had the experience of fine dining inan auto shop, make sure to mark your calendar for next year. Seeyou in May, at Mayo’s.

To fill cells in your Porsche's battery, try using a turkey baster. The model appropriated from my kitchen has a plastic tube about 10inches long, and a rubber squeeze bulb. The tube's diameter allowsplunging it into the neck of a gallon jug of distilled water.

Just plunge and squeeze. When you release, there is a enough waterto replenish one cell in a 12 volt battery. If you need two squeezes, yourbattery was really low.

Batteries need to be filled before the summer season. Electrolyte(the liquid in batteries) should cover the tops of the plates in each cell.

I like to keep mine just below the bottom of the filler tube that the caps screw into. Using the baster and a flash light, one can add precisely the amount of distilled water that each cell needs, without themessy overflow that may occur with other types of battery fillers thathave check valves in their stems.

This is especially helpful for some early 911's were access to the battery is only obtained after the spare has been pulled out of the trunk.

Once you have used a kitchen device for battery work, it becomesa garage only tool. This is because you probably pick up some sulfuricacid on the tip of the baster.
