As I sit here composing this article I amlooking at the beautiful weather. Hard to believe it is February. Of course, by the time you read this the weather could be totally different -- we are in North Texas after all. Anyway, this weather is very conducive to driving your Porsche. Soon we will have several opportunities for just that.
First gear: Our first Drivers’ Education weekend is scheduled for February 27-28 and our first Autocross on February 28. Both will have been successfully completed by the time you read this. In March there is an Autocross Novice School followed by another Autocross at Mineral Wells as well as a Sunday Drive to Mitas Hill Winery. We do not have a Drivers’ Education in March because in years past there were several conflicts, such as spring break, but there will be several club-sponsored events coming up in April and May. Just check the website or the calendar in this Slipstream.
Second gear: I want to mention a couple of events that are coming up later: All British and European Car Day, and a Club Race and Solo Drivers’ Education at Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin. The All British and European Car Day folks have invited us to attend, and will provide a separate class and parking for Porsches. It will be held on Sunday, May 1 at White Rock Lake. The Club Race and DE at COTA is a joint effort of your club, the Hill Country Region and the Lone Star Region. If you want to participate and are qualified as a Solo driver, registration will open on March 21. If you cannot enter, but would like to either be a spectator or a volunteer, it would be a great opportunity to see this very nice track. The event at COTA is May 6, 7, and 8.
Third gear: your club includes over 2,500 others that appreciate and own a Porsche in the North Texas area. We were in the top five clubs in the country for growth in 2015. That speaks volumes about your club. It means we have something that many people want. As you have heard me say many times, it is only possible because of the many volunteers. Here it comes…..
Fourth gear: YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU . . . volunteer! You will be glad you did. As I have mentioned previously, we now have a Volunteer Chairman, Jim Gallegos. Just contact him at [email protected] and he can assist you with getting the most out of your membership
by helping your club to continue to be the organization many enjoy.
Mavs of the MonthSpeaking of volunteers and Jim Gallegos, Jim and
his wife Phyllis have both gotten very involved with the Maverick Region. Phyllis is co-chairperson of social events and was instrumental in the All Member Party being the success it was. It is really nice to see a couple being involved in the same organization. So this month Jim and Phyllis Gallegos are the Mavs of the Month. I hope they both inspire other couples to get involved.

The Board meeting beganat 7:00 pm.
President Jim Falgout noted that nominations for PCA National Awards are due March 1. These are annual awards that PCA presents at the Porsche Parade for Enthusiast of the Year, Family of the Year, and Region of the Year, as well as for Public Service awards. To nominate someone, please contact a board member (page 4).
Jim announced that the West Texas Region is hosting their first ever Swap Meet on Saturday, April 23 in Lubbock. PCA members can reserve a 10 x 10-ft space free of charge. Contact Larry at lar-rycrs46@hotmailcom or 806-777-7857 for details.
The All British and European Car Day on Sunday, May 1 at Drey-fuss Club Point on White Rock Lake, will have a Porsche class this year. All participants and spectators are asked to bring a pair of new closed-toed shoes to donate. Regis-ter online for $20 or $25 at the gate.
Jim announced that Cindy Bliss has taken over as Ad Manager. She will be the main point of contact for Slipstream advertisers.
Jim reported for absentee Board members. Monthly Social Chair Stephanie Ho said that the Febru-ary 18 event at Lavendou Restaurant had already received 136 RSVPs. The initial limit was 40 RSVPs, so Stephanie will work with the owner to try to accommodate more. Rally Co-Chair Don Sebert noted that he and George Luxbacher plan an April Gimmick Rally.
The PCA Zone 5 Presidents Meeting is to be held in Austin on Saturday, February 20. Treasurer Richard Solomon suggested that the region pay Jim’s travel expenses to attend that meeting. Joe McGlo-hen so moved, Chris Tabor second-ed, and the motion passed.
Content Editor Carey Spreen (filling in for Secretary Wendy Shoffit) reported for absentee Managing Editor Jim Hirsch. Jim had asked Carey to respond to any time-sensitive email while Jim is out of the country. Jim expects to get the March issue to our proofread-ers on time.
Time Trial Chair Travis Howard plans two Time Trial events this year. The first will be in Mineral Wells on Saturday, May 21. Prior track experience is not required to enter this one. The second will be on the MotorSport Ranch 1.3-mile course on Sunday, October 2. Prior track experience is required, as no instructors will be available. Travis will also be performing routine maintenance on the Truxster.
Treasurer Richard Solomon asked if we could move the contents of our current storage facility in Colleyville to another location, as the facility is increasing their rent. The consensus was that consolidat-ing it is a possibility.
Member Bill Middleton, who was actively involved in the rebuilding of the Hope Shelter, advised us that the Shelter often has items stolen, including portable hair dryers. Bill wants to purchase hotel-style hair dryers that mount to the wall with tamper-resistant hardware, but do not require an electrician. The plan is to purchase seven of these hair dryers at a total cost of $360.93. Joe McGlohen made a motion to fund this purchase, Cindy Bliss sec-onded, and the motion passed. The Hope Shelter will have a clean-up date in April.
Sunday Drive Chair Tom Martin told us that all Drives for this year are “in the can” and ready to go. This year he wants to focus on the destinations and do recaps of the Drives afterwards.
Concours Chair Andy Kay is writ-ing an article for Slipstream that de-scribes how Concours events work. Our annual May at Mayo’s dinner and People’s Choice Concours will be Saturday, April 30 this year, due to conflicting events in early May. The annual Autos in the Park Con-cours at the Cooper Aerobics Cen-ter, will be Sunday, June 5.
Andy relayed that Lone Star Region Concours Chair Tom Roy held an event using online pre-registration, allowing them to order the exact number of T-Shirts and awards needed. Andy would like to do this for the Porsche classes at Autos in the Park, and is working on classifications. His goal is to re-
introduce timed judging to our re-gion, in which judges examine the cars under a time limit. He will ask for assistance with on-line registra-tion from Wendy Shoffit.
Lastly, he noted that there are lots of Mavericks that attend local Cars & Coffee but no other events. We’ll be working on ideas to im-prove that situation.
Safety Chair Joe McGlohen handed out safety and insurance guidelines to all Chairs who put on moving car events. He is searching for a successor by the end of 2016. Autocross Chair Mark Schnoerr noted that, since our events are actually hosted by Equipe Rapide, their insurance covers those events, and PCA insurance is not required. Joe will confirm with PCA National.
Treasurer Richard Solomon reported that the club has over $159,000. He reminded us that a Charity Committee will be formed before the March meeting. Each charitable organization that the Committee approves should update the Committee and Board on their status annually, avoiding donation of funds to any organizations that are not communicating their status.
He reminded us to use the on-line Check Request form, and to report use of club debit cards with-in 72 hours. He also forwarded a press release about region member Nick Boulle, who took second place in the Prototype Challenge race at the Rolex 24.
Drivers’ Education Chair Chris Tabor announced that the first DE of the season, on February 27-28 on the MotorSport Ranch 3.1-mile course, has 75 entries to date. He expects a sellout in green and blue groups. Coach training, which vets potential driving coaches to con-firm that they will attend a major-ity of our DEs, has filled up. Chris wants to extend discounts to new members via email to increase awareness of the program. He wants to put on one or more night-time DEs this year.
Our new Goodie Store Co-Chair, Chris Flaugh, will partner with Jim Hirsch to run our online Store. Chris joined PCA last year.

Social Chair Assistant Phyllis Gallegos reported a successful All Member Party, with 280 attendees and 150 Porsches. Tracy Robertson and Phyllis are looking for ways to streamline the event for next year and fix parking issues.
Volunteer Chair Jim Gallegos noted that Chris and Cindy are recent new volunteers. He has lots of mem-bers asking what they can do to help out. Jim wants brief descriptions of each Chair position to explain what duties the potential volunteers could assume. He wants a way for interested members to volunteer online in advance of certain events. Cindy suggested a Volunteer tab on the mav.pca.org website, and Joe sug-gested that we ask what the potential volunteers are interested in, so as to match up their interests with the club’s needs. For example, the corner worker position provides a front-row seat to on-track action.
Autocross Chair Mark Schnoerr noted that there are three schedule conflicts between autocrosses and DEs this year, but with seven more autocross events available, those conflicts should not hurt either series.
Slipstream Content Wrangler Brenda Dranow is on the lookout for potential article contributors. Unfor-tunately, some fail to give her their contact info, mak-ing them difficult to reach.
Ad Manager Cindy Bliss is excited about her new position on the Board.
Finally, President Jim announced the Mavericks of the Month as Phyllis and Jim Gallegos for both step-ping up and becoming involved in club operations.

Have you ever stopped and wondered:Why am I a PCA member? Once you rule out the obvi-ous answers like: “We’re awesome!”, “Because we love Porsches!”, and “I have a need for speed!”, what are you left with? For many of us, the reasons for our mem-bership are rooted in family, while others enjoy the feeling they get creating long lasting relationships with like-minded Porsche fanatics. Maverick Region’s own Bambina family has, and will always, graciously remind us of the existence of this cohesive Porsche family unit. “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people!” We all know this quote, and for many it has become the club motto, but for most it has become a creed we have all come to live by. I absolutely love this quote because it speaks volumes, not just of our congenial dispositions, but also to our passion for camaraderie.
However, you are probably members because of the Porsche automobile itself. The exotic styles, voluptuous curves, roaring engines, and intricate handling experi-ences have attracted many people since the 1960s. A person’s first Porsche, at least to the other PCA mem-bers, is a monumental point in his or her life. I do not
mean to use the term “monumental” to place it on the scale of getting married, having children, and or graduating from college, though for some this is true. I simply mean there is an overwhelming sense of ac-complishment, pride, and exuberance that washes over a person purchasing a Porsche. And then that person drives it!
My reason for being a member of the PCA falls into the family category, but could be argued to draw from the others. I grew up in a PCA family. My Papa, my mother’s father, lived, breathed, and bled Porsche. I was lucky to have Porsche models, R.C. cars, and post-ers as a kid, but like all children my attention span could not be held on one thing, so I ended up trying everything. The memories I have of my Papa re-volve around the Porsche crest; it

has just taken me years to fig-ure this truth out. Nearly every picture I have of him, ei-ther with me in frame or not, the Porsche brand is rep-resented. The cars, books, apparel, and stickers fill our family photo albums. Even though I was young, one of my deepest regrets in life is not walking out to the garage and ask-ing my Papa anything about what he was doing on his Porsches. After my Papa’s passing, my curiosity had built up to capacity, forcing me to set out and find the reasons why he loved Porsches so much. Once I finally got my hands on one, a rambunctious little ‘87 944, well you can probably guess the rest!
It is because of my Papa that I am a member of the PCA. What’s your reason? Contemplate, and as always . . . Wrench on Mavs!

The yearly All Members Party (AMP)on January 23 was an unqualified success judging by the turnout alone. A special thank you to the AMP Co-chairs – Tracy Robertson and Phyllis Gallegos – who did a magnificent job of putting all of these pieces to-gether for our new and current members to enjoy. In addition, thank you to all of the Board Event Chairs who shared information about our club activities with the attendees.
And, of course, thank you to all of our new and cur-rent members who joined in a fun-filled afternoon. Beyond great food and libations, the conversations heard throughout our time together were those of new and old friends sharing good times together. With 160+ Porsches in the parking lot ferrying over 250 members to the event, we certainly made the Hackberry Country Club the place to be that afternoon.
One partygoer, Bill Young, was attending his first AMP even though he has been a Maverick Region member since 2008. In addition to serving as a parking lot volunteer and getting to see all of the Porsches as they arrived, Bill shared the following comment: “What was so interesting to me was all the members had the same reason for being at the Party, and that was to have these great cars called Porsches brought into one loca-tion. In addition to being able to see friends and learn about all the upcoming events, I got to see what I had been missing all these years.”
So, the PCA motto – “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people” was evident to all who attended the 2016 AMP. Consider this to be your early invitation to attend the 2017 even next January. Enjoy these photos from the event.

Editor’s Note: At the All Member Party in Janu-ary, each event chair described their events. These are the questions that came up about the very fun, safe, and afford-able sport of autocrossing.
Q: Where can I find this year’s schedule, rules, and classes?
A: Log on to mav.pca.org, click Events, then select Autocross/Time Trial. There you’ll find the 2016 schedule, and under the ER Classification link is a de-scription of Porsche autocross classifications.
Q: How do I register on line? A: You can go to the ER website, autocross.com, and
follow the links to set up an account. They have kindly extended their member price to PCA members. You pay $35 per event, or you may preregister for all ten in advance for $245.
Q: Can I register on site? A: Yes. Plan to be on site by 8 am.Q: How long is a day at an autocross? A: Normally 8 am to about 4 pm. There are no for-
mal lunch breaks, so you may want to bring lunch with you. Water is provided, but you may want to bring your own, and in the warmer months, be sure to bring a hat and sunscreen!
Q: Are all events on Sundays? A: Yes, PCA / ER autocross events are on Sundays,
except for the Autocross School on Saturday, March 19.Q: Do I need to have my car pre-teched? A: No. Tech inspection is done on-site before timed

Rallying. The word prob-ably brings to mind buzzing down the road in a convertible, scarf flying in the wind, based on Hol-lywood concepts like “The Great Race” (1965) or “Cannonball Run” (1981). While we may be some-what biased (being the Maverick Region Rallymeisters), our rallying is a great chance to combine a love of Porsches, some great scenic driv-ing on rural roads (typically at legal speeds!) and a little bit of an intel-lectual challenge. Rallying is similar to a card, computer, or board game with roads representing the playing field in motion. Sound interesting? Read on!
Basically, while driving on public roads at legal speeds, the team (con-sisting of a Driver and a Navigator) interpret and execute instructions we provide in accordance with a set of rules (the General Instructions) that define the terms. The Naviga-tor is critical – it is impossible for a Driver to drive, read instructions and make required observations without help – and passengers are permitted, although you may find they don’t improve your score (pos-sibly related to the comfort factor of being folded in the back seat of a 911 on curvy roads for a few hours). While the traditional rally is a TSD (Time-Speed-Distance) event, where the key is to correctly execute the instructions and arrive at fixed checkpoints at the proper time, we instead have what we think is a lot more fun: gimmick rallies.
In a gimmick rally, precise timing and speed don’t matter. Instead, as long as you can follow the instruc-tions, the key is the gimmick. Gim-micks we have used include photos that have to be placed in the cor-rect order as observed along the route, and cryptic questions re-lated to signage encountered along
the route. Granted, the pictures required sharp powers of observa-tion and were of things that could easily be overlooked; the questions required some interpretation of the rallymeisters’ states of mind and the creative answers of the par-ticipants challenged the scoring . . . but the goal was fun and we had a lot of that!
While the #@*! directions might at first glance seem complicated, definitions are fairly straightfor-ward. While “Right”, “Left” and “ASAP” (As Straight as Possible) are fairly self-explanatory, terms such as “RIP” (“Reads in Part”) or “FLIR” (“Follow the Lined Road,” just like Dorothy and the yellow-brick road) take more thought and observation. While the Rallymeis-ters are not trying to trick you with the directions, they also expect you to follow the rules; do that, and the drive should be relatively painless! We always have some issues that crop up: in addition to the four or five times we pre-drive the route in preparation, one of us drives the route the morning of the rally to look for changes. Last spring, some of our rally route was flooded up until the evening before, and we had an alternate route on higher roads as a back-up. Our fall rally was redirected by a Farmers Market in Celina that didn’t set up until mid-morning as the rally participants arrived! Murphy’s Law at work.
In 2015, we held two gimmick rallies, one with photos and one with questions – the question rally was run at Halloween and we invit-ed participants to dress in costume. If you saw the photos in Slipstream, the turnout exceeded our expecta-tions, unleashing witches, vampires, the Blues Brothers, and all sorts of scary (and some cute) creatures on the roads in Collin and Denton Counties, in addition to a group of
beautiful cars; this was our Drive to the Spirits where we finished up at Witherspoon Distillery. By popular demand, we plan to have another costume rally at Halloween this year, Preliminary plans will tie that into graveyard visits, so watch Slip-steam for further details.
Our first rally this year will be on Saturday, April 16. While plans are still fluid, be prepared for Easter Eggs (meaning surprises hidden in video games – for us, some form of puzzles)! Then, in addition to our Halloween rally, we are going to try some experiments: possibly a Stick rally, in which you are provided a map that looks like a stick with crosslines representing every inter-section; a Hare & Hound, where the correct route and intersections are marked with lime dust at criti-cal points on the road; and maybe even a TSD, which, if we do that, will be an easy introductory event – we promise! If you have done other gimmick rallies, please give us your feedback as to what you would like!
Don’t worry if you have not ral-lied before! We have great fun and, while we issue first, second and third place awards, we also have the traditional and prestigious DLBF award: Dead Last But Finished! In 2015 we had a great turnout for both our rallies and, based on the feedback, everyone had a great time. If you have that competitive spirit but don’t quite want to do DE or Autocross, we have the solution for you!

When we lived in Kentucky, Dee and I tried our hand at a TSD (Time-Speed-Distance) rally sponsored by the SCCA and the Bluegrass Region of PCA. In a TSD, the key is to correctly execute the somewhat cryptic instructions and, driving at designated speeds and allocating for stops and slowdowns, arrive at fixed checkpoints at exactly the right time, neither too late nor too early. With Dee navigating and me driving, we managed to come in dead last, with our marriage in tat-ters, beaten even by a couple that included a pregnant woman, and we constantly saw them driving off course for rest room stops. After that experience, Dee drove and I did not give up; rather we reversed roles, finding that Dee was much better at driving consistently and I was better at interpreting the directions (navigating). Low and behold, not only did our marriage stay secure, we significantly improved our TSD results (although we still had a lot of anxiety on rally day!).
Since moving to Texas we discovered a different type of rallying that the Maverick Region offered – the gim-mick rallies. After running the first, we were hooked and now run the gimmick rallies at the Porsche Parade as well. Less anxiety, a great drive on fabulous roads and lots of fun – who could ask for more?

of chocolates -- you never know what you’ll get. (I think that’s a close quote.)
Being involved with the Kansas City Region for many years, I experienced many types of drives, includ-ing various Rally types, TSD, Gimmick, etc. I learned early on that in order to continue my marriage, I better never ask my wife to navigate a TSD Rally. Even trying to bribe my children into substituting for their Mother was received with laughter and their quick disappear-ance. So, I decided when moving to Dallas and joining Maverick Region, I would never do a TSD Rally. With that said, it doesn’t mean we wouldn’t do a TSD, if the demand were there and we have marriage counselors on site.
Now that I’ve become the 2000-year-old man, I’ve learned it’s a lot more fun doing what makes us happy. So, happy/fun Gimmick Rallies are on the top of the list, with enough challenges to make it interesting.

If you have ever had the pleasure of meet-ing Linda Bambina, one of the first things you might notice about her is the way she seems to sparkle. She smiles through her eyes, conveying the joy in her heart. She has an effervescent personality that matches. She has been known by several names in the club since she joined with her husband, Alan, in 1981. First Lady, Madam Secretary, Tigger, Spark Plug, Watch/Worker B*tch, and Slipstream Wrangler, but I’ll get to those.
Born and raised in West Texas, she had a fun-loving mother who encouraged her creativity. She used that upbringing and an incessant thirst for creativity to teach for 39 years in the Carrollton/Farmers Branch School District. From Special Education to Gifted and Tal-ented (a different kind of Special Ed) to Texas History and finally the library, she used her amazing creative talents to engage her students and keep them wanting to learn. She herself never quit learning, completing TWO Masters Degrees and multiple certifications dur-ing her tenure. Although she was busy with her career, she found a way to make time for the Porsche Club.
Within a year of joining, she was asked to be the Ad-vertising Chair by Region President Joan Gibbs, which she did for several years before becoming the Auto-cross Watch B*tch. While you might find that insulting, she never did! Never one to rest on her laurels, she moved on to be the Worker B*tch, helping organize the autocross events. She not only worked the events, but she was an active participant, driving the wheels off of Alan’s 911, even though many women weren’t doing that at the time. Don’t ask her HOW she got the fast times she did. She couldn’t tell you -- for her it was just a feeling. Talk about seat-of-the-pants racing! She has plenty of trophies to prove that her method worked!
Over the years, she continued to serve the local re-gion (Secretary 1985, First Lady 1986-87, and co-VP with Alan in 1991-92), she also found a love of the Porsche Parade and wanted to help out there. Her first Parade was in 1983, and just four short years later she served as Registrar for the 1987 Parade, held in D/FW. It was
the first time that computers were really used for that event. Have her tell you stories about her computer tutor, Charlie Davis sometime!
Back then local regions even had to “bid” for the chance to host a Parade. Linda again used her creative background and love of photography to help Charlie and Teri create fabulous presentations until D/FW won the bid. That was no small feat, mind you -- they were pitching a Parade headquartered at DFW Airport! Her love of Parades continued through the years when she was Art Show Chair at the 1997 San Antonio Parade (finally involving the kids at Parade) and in 2004 in Fort Worth as the “En-tertainment” Chair. Her enthusiasm and love of costuming has showed up many times, dressing like Dolly Parton, Dale Evans, Miss Piggy, and for her beloved “Cos-tume Concours.” All this to make sure everyone is having a good time. She ropes in those around her to have fun with her.
Hans-Peter Porsche can tell some tales of his Linda encounters: dressing as Roy Rogers and, believe it or not, going to Wet ‘N Wild and sliding down the infa-mous waterslide named Der Stuka. I think Linda can convince just about anyone to do just about anything. Just ask Alan!
Over the years she has helped put on many Round-Up and getaway weekends, and more for fun. While she was co-VP, she was the “Spark Plug” social chair, arranging monthly dinners complete with programs that members would be in-terested in. But that’s not all she’s been involved with! She has a heart of pure gold. Although she took a several-year hiatus from volunteer-ing for everything to focus a little more on her own studies and work, in 2010 President Mike Brodigan
implored her for help with the Hope Shelter. The re-gion was in the middle of helping build them a new facility, which needed her special talents. Not only did we finally build a new house, a few years later they needed a safe backyard playground for the kids. Enter

Linda once again, who spent count-less hours planning, preparing, and prodding others to help out. Through her organizing, the proj-ect was completed with all money
coming from individual donors. Her boundless energy earned her the name “Tigger” from Mike.
But wait . . . there’s more! A newly energized and retired Linda was ready to help again with the club. After the Hope Shelter proj-ects were completed, it was time for our Region’s 50th Anniversary! She had a huge part to play in the festivities, most substantially with the “Family Portrait.” The goal was to have each year of the Maver-ick Region’s existence represented, not just with any random car, but cars belonging to people who have con-tributed to the success of our region. After hours and hours on the phone and email arranging it all, Mission Accomplished! The last
few years, she has focused her ener-gies on helping with Slipstream as a PR chair and Content Wrangler. She has written numerous articles about garages, our people, and our advertisers to make everyone feel included. I’m sure you have en-joyed her pieces.
Through her many years of ser-vice to the club, Linda has earned our region’s highest honor, the Sel-cer Award, twice! She probably should have earned it more than that, but I don’t know of anyone who can catch up to her to give her another one! Thank you, Linda, for your continued help to make this club great. I look forward to the next time you return from a hiatus. Look out PCA!

Ah, spring. That time of year when a youngman’s fancy turns to the ladies, and a mature man’s fancy turns to . . . getting the Porsche out of hibernation and back on the road for the driving season! And with spring just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about where and when to purge the winter cobwebs from your Porsche.
Consider the inaugural event of the 2016 Sunday Drive Program: “Would You Have Any Grey Poupon?” – The Mitas Hill Vineyard Tour. The Drive will be heldlater this month on Sunday, March 20. The startingpoint is the parking lot of Fry’s Electronics, located at700 East Plano Parkway in Plano. Start time is 1:00 pm,so plan to get there a little early to sign up and attendthe Drivers’ Briefing.
The route is a breezy 62.1-mile jaunt (exactly 100 km, in keeping with the Continental theme). Once out of the confines of the urban sprawl, the route reverts to the solitude of obscure roads that lead to bucolic places like the Mitas Hill Vineyard.
Upon arrival at the Vineyard, Mavericks can elect to take a tour of the vineyard, conducted on a farm wagon
with bench seats, pulled by the grounds’ tractor. Vine-yard tours take about 1.5 hours. Another option is to indulge in a wine tasting, where a flight of four wines can be enjoyed. One could even go “full wine and cheese” with the house’s “Little Slice of Heaven,” a food and wine pairing flight. The Vineyard also houses a full restaurant for fine dining. The menu includes exotic Wagyu beef steaks, as well as gourmet Neapolitan pizzas wood fired in a brick oven.
Of course, attendees are not required to participate in any of the destination’s offerings, so if one desires, one may head straight home after the Drive, following their own route.
If you plan on attending the Drive, it is imperative that you RSVP before the Drive. Just shoot an e-mail to [email protected] with a simple “I will be attending (by myself, with my wife, with a friend, etc.)” and you’re in. When you RSVP, it gives us an accurate account to supply to the proprietor of the destination. Additionally, three days before the Drive, you will receive an e-mail with the following attachments: a Garmin .gdb file of the route, a route overview, and turn-by-turn instructions.

Nick Boulle’s debut atthe 54th Annual ROLEX 24 Hours of Daytona resulted in a second-place finish in the Prototype Chal-lenge (PC) Class. Nick Boulle, the 26-year-old son of Denis and KarenBoulle — of de Boulle, an indepen-dent jewelry salon in Dallas andnow Houston— was the first retail
jeweler which carries Rolex to com-pete in the demanding 24-hour sports car race.
The race requires four-driver teams. Rounding out the team was returning PR1 driver Tom Kimber-Smith, Robert Alon and Jose Guti-errez. The team raced in the Le Mans Prototype Challenge car. The car featured an open-cockpit and technology such as a carbon fiber chassis, carbon brakes and sequen-tial gearbox. Weighing in at 1990 pounds, the PC car reached top speeds of around 190 mph during the 24-hour event.
The race consisted of 24 hours of straight racing waged on the legendary Daytona International Speedway. It’s the first major auto race of the year, and it brings out some of sport’s biggest names. The team completed 698 laps and 25 pits around the 3.56 mile circuit. Each driver spent about six hours crammed into the car whizzing around the track.
Boulle was also the PC class lead-er during the exciting race. “Half
way through the race (12 hours) we were still first, but we had me-chanical issues and lost 12 laps so we ended up in fourth during the night,” said Boulle. The team moved back into second place. If not for a faulty $14 part, the team likely would have won.
Boulle, who had stepped away from racing for a few years to pur-sue social media business and cy-cling ventures, never missed a beat when it was time for him to take over driver duties at the Rolex 24. With his dad’s love for cars, Nick was drawn to motorsports and be-gan racing go-karts at age 12. By the time he was 20 years old studying at Southern Methodist University, Boulle had produced top results in national events and was racing as a Volkswagen Junior Driver in ad-dition to coaching drivers in karts and racecars. “I have always loved motorsports,” he says, “and racing in the Rolex 24 has turned a dream into reality.”

Concours d’Elegance: Literally, “Competition of Elegance”By Andy Kay, Region Concours Chair
A Concours d’Elegance is an assembly of automobiles in competition, based on their relative merits in coachwork, design, finish, and appointments. In other words: how good do they look?
There are several different formats. “Show and Shine” or “People’s Choice” events are judged by the spectators and other competitors. There are no formal judges, score sheets, or stopwatches involved. The spec-tators and competitors vote for their favorite entries, and whichever cars earn the most votes win.
“Top Only” or “Street” events employ judges to evalu-ate the condition of the cars, but they are not restricted to a time limit. They judge only the “top” of the cars, in other words, only the portions of the car that you can see from above, which includes mainly the condition of the bodywork, wheels and tires, and the interior.
“Touring” category is a judged and timed event in which each car begins with a perfect score of 180 points, with points being deducted for imperfections and flaws. Judged areas include storage areas in addi-tion to those judged in “Street.”
“Full” Concours competition is the highest category, and the most serious; competitors can spend months preparing their cars, and often trailer them to the event. Judging is allowed for all areas of the car, includ-ing engine compartments, undercarriages, and wheel wells, in addition to the aforementioned areas. The Porsche Parade Concours includes Street, Touring, and Full categories.
In Maverick events, cars are judged in eleven distinct classes:

Most of the competitors use their Porsches as daily drivers. We prepare our cars in a few hours and drive them to the events. Our goal is to create a fun, low- or no-stress social event for the entrants and their families.

Every month, club members get a chance to get together and enjoy each other’s company, talk about Porsches and meet new people with the same passion - Porsches. These Monthly Socials happen every third Thursday of the month with the first one this year on February 18th at the French restaurant Lavendou in Dallas to celebrate a club event around Valentine’s Day. Normally, the hours for the Monthly Social start at 6:00pm and are slated to end around 9:00pm. Most of the time, everyone is having such a good time, they stay longer and the end time is at your own discretion. You get to meet up with new friends you’ve made from the last event, and then meet newly joined members. You never find anyone not having a good time.
The next Monthly Social will be held on Thursday, March 17th at Love & War in Texas near Grapevine Mills mall. Fun was had by all last year with a live band and dancing later in the evening. At this time, the loca-tions for April and beyond are still being determined. Look in your monthly Slipstream for the upcoming month’s social event. Some months you must RSVP because of limited space while on most you can just mark your calendar and show up. The times are just
a suggestion, so if you can’t make dinner, then come at anytime and enjoy the company and a few cocktails. These Monthly Socials are informal with no seating as-signment allowing you to mix and mingle throughout the evening.
Greg and I joined the Maverick Porsche Club in October, 2014. We didn’t know what to expect at our first Monthly Social event, but the minute we arrived Stephanie made us feel welcomed and introduced us to everyone. We all know how it is to walk into a sea of people not knowing anyone and making that first introduction can be hard, but Stephanie and the other members won’t give you a chance to feel any other way but welcomed. You will definitely leave with a smile and glad you came to the event. Greg and I have made some great friends from the club, and some of them we have met at these Social Events (others at monthly drives, etc.).
As for the other perks of coming to a Monthly So-cial, you get to see a parking lot filled with every type of Porsche you can imagine. So, for many of the reasons you joined the club, you will find several of them in one evening at a Monthly Social. Hope to see you there!

The year was 1992. Recently remarried in the spring, my wife Jan and I were starting a new life together, lit-erally from scratch, in North Texas. After a day of job interviews, I stopped by the now defunct Steak & Ale restaurant in Plano for a quick 5 o’clock gin and tonic. The young bartender who served me was very enthu-siastic about an article he had just read in one of the mainstream auto enthusiast magazines.
He inched the magazine towards me, which was opened to a picture of an incredibly sensual looking two-seater sports car. It almost appeared like silvery molten metal was poured over its spartan frame. The rumor mill was rife with stories of a brand new Porsche, one that was a complete departure from the venerable 911. This was that car: the Porsche Boxster.
I gazed longingly at the artist’s sketch of the proposed Porsche Boxster concept car. It was a deliberate throw-back to the revered Porsche 550 Spyder of yore, with a targeted MSRP of $29,995. It may as well have been all the money in the world at the time; at this point in our lives there was no way we would be able to justify buy-ing it, let alone affording it. The image of the Boxster became but a fading image in the back of my mind.
The Boxster was a huge success right at the onset. Initial production allocations sold out quickly. Stuttgart couldn’t handle the demand, so Porsche farmed the project out to the Valmet Automotive facility in Uusi-kaupunki, Finland. Sharing a basic platform with the next generation 911 (996), the Boxster essentially saved Porsche from financial ruin.
In the ensuing years, I enjoyed long-term relation-ships with three Nissan 240SX sport coupes, in both S13 and S14 configuration. They were all wonderful, pure kinesthetic driving machines. And ultra-reliable, too.
Occasionally I would spot a Boxster on the road, and my mind would drift back to the artist’s sketch of the concept car. On my daily commute home, when traffic on 635 was backed up (usually on days ending in the letter “y”), I would take Northaven Road travelling east. For a short time there was a pristine Arctic Silver Boxster parked outside a semi-affluent residence with a “For Sale” sign on it. Another time, I came upon the 2008 orange Special Edi-tion model on the highway and gave the driver a huge “thumbs up”.
The fading image of the Boxster concept car catapulted to the fore-front of my mind when my retire-ment loomed on the horizon. I was
rounding third and heading for home. Being empty nesters, owning a lithe two seater was too hard to resist. At least that’s what I told my wife. In actuality, I had owned sports cars most of my life, and was now itching to get back into that lifestyle.
From previous racing experience, I knew that a mid-engine layout provided the best setup for optimum han-dling. Ultimate speed was not important. A lightweight, small-displacement, mid-engine sports car would prove to be most nimble for real world driving, especially the occasional blast on winding backroads.
There was a tiny handful of modern day cars to choose from: the Boxster, the MR2, and the exotics. The exotics were out, so it was down to the Boxster and the MR2. I drove multiple examples of each. The MR2 was light, extremely nimble, yet woefully underpowered. It reminded me of my old 914. It also had a storage compartment that would barely accommodate a ruddy English schoolboy’s lunch kit. The Boxster, while a bit heavier, was more refined, but not to the point where the kinesthetics were lost on the driver. It also had two, count ‘em two, trunks. Weekend travel bliss.
I opted for the Boxster, more so for practicality than loyalty to the marque. I allowed myself a full year to find a suitable example that my wife and I would both ap-preciate. Five months later, after kissing a lot of toads, we came upon a beautiful Arena Red example, quite by chance. I just happened to be checking Craigslist when the owner’s ad posted. I called immediately and made an appointment to view the car. The owner had basi-cally zeroed out the drivetrain, with a new water pump, AOS, serpentine belt, and coolant expansion tank. The dreaded IMS issue was addressed with a new IMS bear-ing. All fluids were recently refreshed, including the gearbox oil. Records substantiating all maintenance were provided. After a test drive with my wife Jan, she was pleading with me to buy the car. So I did, right then and there. We came back the next day with cash in hand and completed the transaction.
Shortly afterwards, we joined the PCA and were enlisted in the Maver-ick Region. It’s hard to believe that after almost 40 years of Porsche own-ership, we finally joined the PCA. The experience since then has been priceless; we have participated in and enjoyed many great events, and we especially appreciate the friendship of some truly delightful and interest-ing people.

Maverick Photos of the Month
“A Porsche is not an Everyday Sports Car. It is a Sports Car for Everyday.” This truism greeted every visitor to the “Porsche Zentrum” located above the front straight at Laguna Seca during Rennsport Re-union V. It reminds me, as it should remind you, that the true joy of owning a Porsche vehicle happens when you drive it as often as possible.
There is nothing more exciting to a Maverick mem-ber than seeing a Porsche on the road to anywhere - the grocery store, coffee shop, one of our many toll roads, or even to a club event. These engineering marvels from Germany were designed to be “driven hard and put away wet”, as the saying goes.
I certainly understand the time we all put into keep-ing our club rides clean and polished to a magnificent lustre means we don’t want to repeat the effort. Re-member that dust, dirt, the occasional piece of gravel, and even a rain drop or two, were all anticipated by the Porsche engineers as they designed and built these amazing machines. You’re actually creating the future patina of your vehicle each time you drive it!
So, the next time you decide to keep your Porsche in the garage because it’s too clean to drive, re-mind yourself that it is a sports car for everyday and needs regular exercise rain or shine. The smile on your face that you get while driving it will more than replace any additional time needed to clean your vehicle when you return.
