Adjunct Professor Suchin Ungthavorn,a former dean of the Faculty of Medicine,Naresuan University, is a retired govern-ment officer who is currently a lecturer in the Faculty of Medicine at Burapha University disseminating medical knowl-edge to faculty members in Burapha University and other associated institu-tions. Moreover, at present, he is an invited lecturer teaching Chulalongkorn University’s medical students.

Adjunct Professor Suchin Ungthavorn, M.D.

Adjunct Professor Suchin Ungthavorngraduated with a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Medical Science, Bangkok, Thailand; received a Master of Science in Microscopic Anatomy from Queen's University, Ontario, Canada and has a medical certificate in Medical Education (Med. Ed.) from the Center for Educational Development, the University of Illinois, the United States of America. With regard to his work experience, Adjunct Professor Suchin Ungthavorn has been determinedly fulfilling his dutiesthrough teaching and researching,especially conducting research on people disabled from birth, focusing onthe sources of the mechanisms for beingdisabled. Moreover, his diligence and dedication have been tireless throughouthis career, promoting him for appointmentin different administrative positions, including at Chulalongkorn Universitypositions of head of the AudiovisualEducation Center at the Office of Academic Resources, head of the Department of Anatomy, and vice-dean for Academic Affairs at the Faculty of Medicine. After his retirement, he became dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Naresuan University.

Nationally, he had various important responsibilities in different organizations as well as receiving much prestigious recognition, for instance, president of the Anatomy Association of Thailand, certificate for being an outstanding staff of Naresuan University, and the MedicalCouncil of Thailand’s trophy for an outstanding medic in morality from Burapha University.

Dr. Supachai Panitchpakdi completed his bachelor’s degree in Economics from St. Gabriel's College, Bangkok; his master’s degree in Econometrics, Development Planning; and his Ph.D. in Economic Planning and Development from the Netherlands School of Economics(now known as Erasmus University), Rotterdam, the Netherlands under the supervision of the first Nobel Prize Laureate for Economics, Jan Tinbergen.

After finishing his studies, he started working with Prof. Dr. Puey Ungpakorn as a visiting fellow at the University of Cambridge and then moved to the Bank of Thailand as a special academic researcher. After a short period of time, the young and active employee was quickly promoted to be assistant to the head of International Business and then advanced to the head of Supervision and Analysis for Foreign Exchange situated in the International Affairs Department. Shortly afterwards, he became the director of Office of the Bank of Thailand and the director of Regulatory and Observant Institutions for Finance. Indeed, he was also appointed to be an administrator in both private and government sectors, such as Chin Sophonpanich Foundation professor at the Faculty of Commerce and Accoun-tancy, Chulalongkorn University; chair professor of the School of Development Economics, the National Institute of Development Administration; an honorary member of the University Council of Prince of Songkla University; president of the Committee of Navathanakij Finance and Securities Co., Ltd.; president of the University Council of Bansomdej-chaopraya Rajabhat University;

executive vice president of the Thai Military Bank; and a board member of the Industrial Finance Corporation of Thailand. Joining political activities, he became a member of the House of Representativesunder the Democrat Party, elected in Bangkok in 1986. During his time, he playedan important role in setting national economic policies and was entrusted to be deputy minister of finance, president of the Commissioners for the Economy in the Thai Parliament, a senator, deputyprime minister, and minister of commerce.

As a specialist and a well-known politician who has fully served the people of Thailand and worked for their economic welfare, Mister Supachai Panitchpakdi was selected to be the first Thai to work as director general of the World Trade Organization and secretary general of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. In recognition of his endless efforts to improve Thailand and the global economy, Naresuan University is honored to award Dr. Supachai Panitchpakdi an Honorary Doctorate of in Economics on December 9th, 2014.

Mister Dhanin Chearavanont completed his secondary-school levels from Sarasit Phithayalai School, Ban-Phong district, Ratchaburi province and then completed his high-school study from Shantou, Guangdong province, the People's Republic of China. For his higher education, he graduated in Business Administration, under cooperation between Hong Kong and the National Defense College, 1st group in 1989.

After his studies, he started working as a cashier at Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Limited and then moved to be a poultry manager at the Union of Cooperatives of Thailand. Mister Dhanin Chearavanont was a new generation of businesspeople, having the characteristics of dedication and determination which quickly got him promoted to sales manager of poultry at Samakkee Karsad Company Limited. Then, the young manager went back to Charoen Pokphand Foods PublicCompany Limited as general manager and further advanced to manager of the board for Charoen Pokphand’s networks, mainly taking part in investing and developing the firm to be the biggest business in Thailand and the largest animal feed provider in the world. In addition, the company expanded to real estate, the automotive industry, and telecommunications.

With his knowledge, competence, and experience in business administration, Mister Dhanin Chearavanont was invited to take various positions, for example, member of the National Legislative Assembly, senator, advisor to the prime minister, advisor to the minister of commerce, committee member advising on the King’s projects in Thailand’s northeastern region, advisor to the Agricultural Economics Society of Thailand under royal patronage, honorary advisor to the Federation of Thai Industries, advisor to the Thailand-China Business Council, and the first and now the second president of the Chinese Coastal Business People’s Union of the People's Republic of China. Furthermore, he has internationally and nationally received many honors, such as Businessperson of the Year 1990, Outstanding Business Developer 1991, Outstanding Administrator in Investing1992, Mahidol Wittayanusorn Royal Award1992, Person of the Nation for Economic Development, Corporate Leader of the Year from the Asian Finance Magazine, and Outstanding Benefactor for Educationfrom Peking University.

Mister Dhanin Chearavanont has trulybeen a professional and visionary business-person, recognized both in Thailand and internationally. For all his accom-plishments, Naresuan University is honoredto award Mister Dhanin Chearavanont an Honorary Doctorate in Business Administration for the 2014 Academic Year.

Naresuan University is pleased to announce the awarding of an Honorary Doctorate in Pharmaceutical Sciences to Prof. Dr. Hans E. Junginger. Prof. Junginger has been conducting research and teaching in pharmaceutics for over forty years. He was head of the Department of Pharmaceutics at the Leiden/Amsterdam Center for Drug Research, retiring in 2004. Since retiring,Prof. Junginger has been a visiting professor at Naresuan University in Phitsanulok, Thailand; the Faculty of Pharmacy in Ljubljana, Slovenia; the National University of Singapore; and the German University in Cairo, Egypt.

Professor Dr. Hans E. Junginger

Professor Junginger studied Pharmacyat the Maximilians University in Münich, Germany. He received his Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from the University of Saarland, Saarbrücken, Germany. His research has focused on drug delivery: mucosal barrier modulationand drug absorption control, skin barriermodulation and drug absorption, and novel synthesized polymers for delivery systems for peroral peptide drug and vaccine delivery and absorption. He has worked as a consultant to numerousinternational pharmaceutical companies,including Aruba Aloe Balm, Oranjestad,Aruba, the Netherlands Antilles; Lupin Research Laboratories, Prune and Mumbai,India; and Procter and Gamble Beauty Research, Kobe, Japan.

In addition to his prolific research, Prof. Junginger has coauthored over 300 publications in peer reviewed journals,50 book chapters, 3 books, and 8 patentsand 2 recent patent applications. He is a fellow of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists and scientific secretary and member of the executive committee of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP). ProfessorJunginger has received many honors and awards, including an honorary doctorate from the University of Ghent, Belgium; an honorary doctorate from thePotchefstroom University, South Africa; the FIP Lifetime Achievement Award in Pharmaceutical Sciences; and the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (ASPS) Dr. Ralph Shangraw Memorial Award sponsored by the IPEC Foundation in 2012.

Naresuan University is pleased to announce the awarding of an Honorary Doctorate in Public Health to Dr. David Stewart Briggs, Adjunct Associate Professor at the School of Rural Medicine and School of Health at the University of New England, Australia, in recognition of his long and extensive work in the public health sector, particularly his expertise in rural and community health as well as health care management in the Asia Pacific region.

Dr. David Briggs has spent his life studying and working to develop health care systems and the management of health services. He received his bachelor’s degree in Health Administration from the University of New South Wales, his master’s in Health Management with 1st class honors from the University of New England, and his doctorate in Philosophy from the University of New England, Australia. In addition to his role in teaching in the management and leadership of health systems, quality management, and the financial management of health systems, Dr. Briggs is Chair of the New England Medicare Local, editor of the Asia Pacific Journal of Health Management, president of the Society of Health Administration Programs in Health Education, and senior advisor to the Centre of Expertise on Hospital and Health Services Management in the Faculty of Public Health at Naresuan University in Phitsanulok, Thailand. He is a fellow, life member, and past national president of the Australian College of Health Services Management as well as founding fellow of the Hong Kong College of Health Services Executives.

Dr. David Briggs received the 2011 Australasian College of Health Service Management (ACHSM) award for best fellowship candidate from Hong Kong. In 2004, he was recipient of the Gold Medal from ACHSM for his outstanding effort and achievements in the provision of health services in Australia. Over the years, he has published numerous scholarly papers in peer reviewed journals. In addition to book chapters, in 2004 he co-authored Health Care Financial Management.

Professor Bruce A. Beutler, M.D. is a 2011 Nobel Laureate for Medicine and presently director of the Centerfor the Genetics of Host Defense at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, the U.S.A. He also holds the Raymond and Ellen Willie Distinguished Chair in Cancer Research and since 2011 is the Regental Professor of the University of Texas System.

Professor Bruce A. Beutler, M.D.

Prof. Beutler was born in Chicago and raised in Southern California. His father, Ernest Beutler, was a physician and medical geneticist. From an early age, Bruce Beutler developed an interestin biology, spending long hours in hisfather’s laboratory. Prof. Beutler received his undergraduate degree in biology from the University of California, San Diego after which he went to medical school at the University of Chicago, receiving his medical degree at the age of 23. He then did his two year residency in neurology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. In 1983, he became a postdoctoral fellow at the Rockefeller University in New York City where he was able to isolate the mouse tumor necrosis factor (TNF); he was the first torecognize the importance of TNF as a keyexecutor of the inflammatory response. In 1986, he returned to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, working as an investigator and professor of internal medicine at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He designed inhibitors of TNF that are widely used in the treatment of inflammatory diseases. Continuing his work on the immune response,

he worked at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California from the year 2000 to 2011, where he was a professor in the Department of Immunology and later chairman of the Department of Genetics. In 2011, he returned to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center where he continues his work on host defense mechanisms.

He has authored or co-authored more than 300 papers, which have been cited more than 46,000 times. Prof. Bruce A. Beutler has dedicated his professional life to the struggle against infectious disease, and his discoveries have been realized as drugsin the treatment of inflammatory diseases. For all the work he has done and for the contributions he is still making to the advancement of medical science,Naresuan University is honored that Professor Bruce A. Beutler has accepted the University’s conferment of an Honorary Doctorate in Medicine (2014).

Before he received the Nobel Prize for Medicine for his discovery of an important family of receptors that allow mammals to sense infections when they occur, triggering a powerful inflammatory response; Prof. Beutler was recognized by the Shaw Prize (2011), the Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research (2009), election to the National Academy of Sciences and Institute of Medicine (2008), the Frederik B. Bang Award (2008), the Balzan Prize (2007), the Gran Prix Charles-Leopold Mayer (2006), the William B. Coley Award (2005), the Robert Koch Prize (2004), and other honors.
