PRAYER REQUEST FOR OUR BELOVED SICK

United with our Holy Father Pope Francis, let us pray in solidarity for our brothers

and sisters here and around the world who are sick. Let us pray for those who have lost loved ones to this virus. May God console them and grant them peace.

We pray also for doctors, nurses, and caregivers, for public health officials and all civic leaders. May God grant them courage and prudence as they seek to respond to this emergency with compassion and in service to the common good. In this time

of need, I invite all the faithful to seek together the maternal intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and I share this prayer with you:

Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas. We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son, as you did at the wedding in Cana. Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our nation and world, and for all our families and loved ones, the protection of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this illness. For those already afflicted, we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance. Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust. In this time of trial and testing, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be patient and kind. Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our hearts. We come to you with confidence, knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother, health of the sick and cause of our joy. Shelter us under the mantle of your protection, keep us in the embrace of your arms, help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus. Amen

Dear Parish Family,

Praised be Jesus Christ!

In this Sixth Sunday in Easter we continue our reflections on Mary and the Marian month of May. Last week we crowned Our Lady at our Sunday Mass. I wrote in the bulletin about why May is dedicated to Mary and what we can do to spread devotion to Our Lady. When I was a child, I was always surrounded by images of Mary either at home or at school. As early as second grade we were taught to memorize the Memorare, which I still say during my thanksgiving after celebrat-ing Mass or at the end of my rosary. Hearing church bells ring at noon or 6pm calling the faithful to recite the Angelus.

This week our reflections turn to another aspect of Marian devotion and piety, the Pope’s devotion to the Mother of God. It is said if you want to look at what we should be doing, look to the head and shepherd. Our Holy Father like other popes before him shows and teaches the Church that if we love Mary, she will always lead us to her Son. Notice that the pope after celebrating Mass, stops to venerate an image of Mary and/or touches the image. Pope Francis’ habit of touching images of Mary is a typical Latin American gesture. For some cultures, this kind of action is reshaping spirituality into tactile experiences. Faith is not just an idea or theory; it is concrete and real!

At Mass and other formal liturgical services, Pope Francis uses incense to bless the Marian images too. In Caserta, Italy on his pastoral visit Pope Francis celebrated the feast of St. Anne, Mary’s mother. A locally loved statue of St. Anne hold-ing the hand of her little girl, Mary, was placed to the side of the altar. In his homily, the pope said, “When I was using the incense, I noticed something very beautiful: The statue of St. Anne does not have a crown, but her daughter Mary is crowned. St. Anne is the woman who prepared her daughter to become queen, to become queen of heaven and earth. This woman did a great job.”

On his visit to Naples Pope Francis told priests, nuns, and seminarians that one way to make sure Jesus is the center of their lives is to ask “his mother to take you to him. A priest, a brother, a nun who does not love Mary, who does not pray to her — I would even say one who does not recite the rosary — well, if you don’t love the mother, the mother will not give you the Son.”

In his official proclamation for the 2015-2016 Year of Mercy Pope Francis wrote, “Mary attests that the mercy of the Son of God knows no bounds and extends to everyone, without exception. Let us address her in the words of the ‘Salve Regi-na,’ (‘Hail Holy Queen’) a prayer ever ancient and new, so that she may never tire of turning her merciful eyes toward us, and make us worthy to contemplate the face of mercy, her Son, Jesus.”

Let us never tire of turning to Our Mother Mary this month. When we do not know where to go, when moments get to intense or frustrating, and during this time with so much suffering around our country and world. Let us like our Holy Fa-ther look to Mary’s gaze and pray:

† REMEMBER, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my pe-titions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen. †

Please continue to stay safe and healthy during this time. Continue to pray for all those frontlines who are sacrificing for the good of all. Lastly, continue supporting all small and local businesses who too are affected by this pandemic. Have a great week!

Querida Familia Parroquial,

¡Alabado sea Jesucristo!

Padre Marinello Saguin

WE ARE HONORED TO CELEBRATE A MASS FOR YOUR SPECIAL INTENTIONS

The practice of requesting a Mass to be offered for loved ones, living or deceased, is a beautiful and wonderful part of our Catholic tradition. Masses are offered for many reasons: for the souls in

purgatory, in remembrance of someone who is deceased, or in honor of a birthday.

If you would like to have a Mass said for someone, please call our parish office at (818) 342-4686 to request a Mass intention or email [email protected] During this time that we

experience “Stay at Home” orders due to Covid-19, Fr. Marinello continues to celebrate daily Mass in private and offers Mass for those intentions that have been requested. Below is our list of intentions from May 2020.

And heartfelt Birthday wishes to our very own Fr. Marinello, whoʹs birthday we

celebrated on May 15th! Happy Birthday Fr. Marinello!!! From your family at OLG!
